Jinx was so good in this! And Ncuti and Millie were great choices for the Doctor and Ruby. I’m so impressed so far. Makes me want to go back and watch from Christopher Eccleston’s series.
It feels so fresh and brand new, but at the same time, RTD really made it feel like I’m back watching the Eccleston/Tennant episodes. It’s such a great mixture of feelings.
Maestro mentioned the old one which isn’t a reference to Susan or any of that, it seems like ruby might be connected with a potential leader of the pantheon. The old one would insinuate he’s the oldest of everything so I think ruby is the child of a deity related to the pantheon which is why maestro seemed so spooked 24:53
Susan (played by actress Carole Ann Ford) first appeared in the story An Unearthly Child (1963). The first episode was set in 1963. Susan’s last regular appearance aired in 1964, but was set in post-2164. Susan (again played by Carole Ann Ford) did make an appearance in the show’s 20th anniversary special in 1983.
Meastro is absolutely terrifying for being so fabulous. I also think Ruby isnt related to the Doctor but instead related to the toymaker maybe the youngest kid or a child of one of his kids.
The Doctor suggesting a Star Trek cross over in an episode was so cool and him mentioning his relatives, he had a granddaughter and he has a daughter that we’ve met but they have never addressed her again, he’s been married twice that we know of, where are these people now?
"There's got to be a shirt with all the doctors on the crosswalk". There is! At least, there is one with doctors 9-12. My dad brought it home from the US for me back in about 2015 - I think it was from Hot Topic...
So glad more people are going to see how talented jinkx monsoon is. We have seen her live in one of her touring shows and she is so charismatic and just an overall powerhouse preformer.
😊❤ 21:40 Maestro circle back to the beginning of the episode the piano teacher is the one that discovered the melody to bring them to reality. So someone of the same unique talent can send her back. That’s why she’s eating up all the music.
It's not about self-protection, but "music......is MIIIIINE" Plus their plan to block more and more music, to get stronger, to then stop the entire universe from moving and making music.
Maestro was fabulous addition to who villains, loved this episode 💙💙 also love that the first time travel ep they go to 1963 the year who started !!! Big love to Greg and John ❤
You guys should check out the challenge from Drag Race All Stars where Jinkx impersonates Judy Garland. It will give you a good idea of their range when it comes to both acting as well as vocals.
I loved this episode, and I love the chemistry between Ncuti and Millie. But I will say, it takes some cajones to have an entire episode where the Beatles play a major role, and not have any payoff with a real Beatles song at the end. (Yes, I know that would likely cost a fortune, but I mean, it's Disney.)
I think mentioning Susan all of the sudden was intentional. I think she's related to the mystery surrounding Ruby (maybe even being her mother). And i would imagine that Susan is coming back into the show in one way or another sooner rather than later
Since you guys did the double bill, I don’t know if you’re aware but there’s an actor who’s already popped up more than once very subtly if you’re not watching them, but it’s good to keep an eye on those type of characters since in RTD fashion they have a huge impact in the grand scheme.
John and Paul coming together at the piano did give me the emotions for a moment there. A lovely little celebration of them without making the whole episode about them.
19:42 The Doctor did do something at the beginning of the last episode after he stepped on a butterfly. He initiated something like a Butterfly Effect Protocol or something. Maybe thats the answer for why Ruby diddnt disappear. Engagint it may have kept Ruby from being affected by timeline changes.
So they are definitely setting up the Doctor to be one of the pantheon Gods from beyond the universe. , timeless child shows that galifrey found the doctor and the Time lOrds were based on what the Doctor already was , they've drawn parallels with how the Time lords Named themselves and how the pantheon is . But what will be the Twist?

The year the episode Susan left in was _released_ in 1964. However, in-universe, the time the Doctor left her in was at least 2164. The Doctor finds a calendar with that date, but as he says the room hasn't been used in years, it's likely much later than that.
the Sogn ruby humms is the tricksters theme which was first heard in Sarah jane adventures in season 1 and in wich it first appeared but was mentioned prior
I really liked the callback to the Saxon theme and the Master's first return to Doctor Who in the new era via only being able to go between two time periods due to the Maestro's interferance, an inversion of what The Doctor did to the Master. The moment I heard those keys I had to pause and go back to make sure I wasn't mistaken in what I heard.
@@The-Busy-Beeeee right when the Maestro plays the piano in the future and the Tardis starts responding to their music. When I turned on captions on Disney+, it even specifically said "[Playing Saxon theme off-key]". Four rapid notes, then a change in pitch and four more. At first I had thought it was an allusion, but it is directly called out for the motif that it is.
@@The-Busy-Beeeee, you're welcome! Much as I loved Missy as well, the Harold Saxon version of the Master I felt just felt like an incredible foil in a way that Missy was a bit less, especially with her character arc. Stll incredible as a character, and I like them both more than the last incarnation we've seen, but John Simm is 'my Master', for his contribution to the post-hiatus show.
I thought The Maestro was a bit overhyped but still great. Space Babies was clearly not entirely for those of us RTD pulled in as children and created a new generation of Whovians. So, I think it was wise to air both episodes in the same weekend. I really enjoyed this episode. I liked The god of play's daughter being the god of music. I just wish I knew the exact reason why these episodes were initially meant to air in a different order "The one who waits is almost here!" The Doctor and Ruby have barely just started travelling yet he hears the Giggle, runs away and she says he never does that. As if they've travelling for quite a bit longer. The awesome moment when he overlooks where he and Susan lived. The reference to Susan and everything else felt like The Devil's Chord was originally gonna be Episode 6. Regardless, Space Babies was in my opinion the series opener for Disney and children worldwide who are potential Whovians. Devil's Chord felt like the series opener for long term viewers and new viewers who were interested in more after Space Babies. Loved the use of the bigger budget with things like the floating musical notes. Only recently started watching you guys. You're fantastic and cover so much of what I watch. Keep it up 👍
I love the fourth wall breaks, and the meta jokes, in this episode. Also I think the general theory is that Ruby is Susan's daughter, but I think she might be somehow related to the pantheons.
😊❤ 13:35. I thought I recognized the melody that Ruby is playing. Greg, when a Milli told you in the interview that Rubys theme she liked for her as the companion that’s the song she’s playing right now in this scene that’s Ruby’s song.

Longtime fans are probably posting that Susan appeared in “The Five Doctors” anniversary special back in ‘83. William Hartnell had died years before but she’s paired with the actor they cast as the First Doctor for the occasion and interacts with other companions and stuff. It’s fun! Susan’s been casually name dropped many times over the years and it always fuels speculation that they’re going to bring her back. When Capaldi’s a college professor you see a picture of River and a picture of Susan on his desk but if you didn’t know who she was it probably went by. For what it’s worth, Carole Ann Ford who played Susan back in ‘63-64 has said that she’d be down for coming back. Stephen Moffat directly addressed the possibility in an interview during his time running the show saying you’d have to come up with a truly awesome story to bring her back with, the implication being that he never did. As much fun as “Power of the Doctor” was and as nice as it was to see Tegan and Ace back, it didn’t necessarily feel ‘earned’ as the saying goes, so I see Moff’s point. 🤔
The 80th anniversary would feel more defined like Donna can come back once more but it's a surprise on top of Billie Piper's eager to come back because it'll be a live action adaptation of the audios. So we get Donna and Rose like "Donna" "Rose?" "It's great to see you". I think that's the type of crossover moffat thinks if we don't see her this season.
This being a secret metaphor for certain patents/copyrights while fowarding the plot would actually make total sense for the episode going off the season so far
I have been waiting for this one with bated breath from the moment I saw the promos with Jinx Monsoon. They are one of my favorite performers, and was just perfect for this role. Jinx is a powerhouse. I hope they have them back in the future. Awesome episode❤
It’s funny you said about the show’s composer breaking the fourth wall. He was actually in the episode. During the musical number at the end, he’s the bald guy playing the piano. He’s also played a musician during a similar musical number in the Tenth Doctor story, “Voyage of the Damned”.
By the way so you guys mentioned it would be neat throwing the actual composer for the show in there, and they actually did. The composer, Murray Gold, was the one playing the piano during the musical number at the end, and he's credited as playing himself
I didn't notice an answer in the comments (but there are so many!) so the term about the non-human sounds was "Aeolean tones" - Aeolus was the Greek god of wind...
Oh one thing i think is an interesting ides is that because Maestro comes from outside the Doctor Who universe, having them break the 4th wall is kind of in character for that concept.
I love how the comments section is both the discovery of the talent that is Jinkxx Monsoon as well as a celebration of how they are made for this. To be seen. To perform.
Maybe his running away and feeling scared is because he has resolved his trauma and he actually wants to live now, he is happy and not just surface-level happy. Just a thought
It's always so much fun to see new people being introduced to Jinkx Monsoon. I hope Doctor Who launches them into the lives of a whole new army of fans. 😁👍
There's a picture of Susan The Doctor's grandaughter at the beginning of the episode where Bill is introduced. There have been small mentions here and there.
😊❤ going all the way back to the beginning of the episode when the piano teacher asked who they were and maestro said them we are them and the piano teacher was confused and didn’t understand what they were talking about. Made perfect sense because it was 1925 and had no idea what they were talking about and I did not feel like they were trying to offend anybody with it. It just made sense.
One of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever. The stunning cinematography(the lighting!), the performances, music and that character! Really just amazing. I hope whoever shot this episode shoots all of the episodes.
😊❤ OK I gotta make this statement. So I went on RUclips to find a varied array of other reviews for these episodes just to see what everyone else is kinda feeling about the show and I am surprised at how many negative reactions there are to it. I am enjoying the positive vibe that Ncuti is giving for the doctor and what Russell T Davies is wanting to do with this particular series. I know we’re used to the doctor being doom and gloom and and always trying to save the universe cause it’s so dark but I find this very refreshing that wanting to bring happiness back to the universe and to have a good time. I have had plenty of other incarnations that were either really Science Fiction based or really tech and a lot of drama. But I’ve never West, that it would be the same doctor doing the same things every single time that’s boring. I like variety I like every doctor being different and approaching it which is why I am enjoying this new and I really wish people can see that.
NPH plays one of the most charismatic and unhinged villain since ages And then, Jinkx Monsoon enters the room... Little fun fact, she told in an interview that Michelle Gomez's Missy was one of her main inspiration for the manerism of Maestro
Fun Easter eggs. Murray gold makes a cameo appearance during the final twist number playing the piano, the music teacher at the beginning of the episode is played by Jeremy limb who is the son of Roger limb who composed for many of classic who’s most famous episodes. The older women who plays clair de lune is played by June Hudson who was the costume designer on season 18 of classic who. Although she has appeared in Wild Blue Yonder, Church on Ruby Road, Space babies and this episode, this is the first episode where Susan (Twist) is credited at the end thus there is a literal twist at the end of the episode. Also last episode Ruby made mention of Star Trek and then the staff of the ship are dressed like Star Trek characters in red yellow and blue uniforms and in this ep she mentions strictly (come dancing) and during the number at the end Shirley and Johannes from strictly make an appearance, it will be interesting to see if this ends up being a through line of the series a bit like Susan Twists character appears to be
I’m an Olde Schoole Fan, & I bloody loved it! Though I also tend to be absurdly fond of anything that expands/shakes up the canon. (While at the same time being thrilled that they brought up Susan!*) Plus the Toymaker’s Pantheon is brilliant. Reminds me of an absurdist/creativity-based version of The Endless from The Sandman. And Ncuti is definitely playing the Doctor as a genuine soul: human, Time Lord, or a foundling from another universe - just a person who meets you at a relatable emotional place. And the ‘twist’ at the end makes me happy on multiple levels! [*Susan, in the television canon, was dropped off in 2167 without having a Tardis of her own. Now she did have adventures in other media… and in ‘Dimensions in Time’, though many take that episode to be a cheese-induced nightmare of the Doctor. (Not me - I was just thrilled to get to see the Seventh Doctor again!) But there is no reason why someone close to the Doctor (say Leela or Romana) couldn’t have dropped her off a Tardis of her own or rescued her after David’s death.] Great reaction, guys 💜💜➕🟦
I absolutely LOVED this episode. Jinx as the Maestro(Iconic!), the dynamic between Ruby and the Doctor. It was great. But I feel like this episode would've benifitted better as a Mid season episode. It gave off that energy to me.
The warning of more to come of a bigger entity, isn't with the Toy Maker but back to The Meep in The Star Beast episode. Cannot wait to see who/what this is. If it's The Master I will be not happy as that is too predictable. I want some thing different.
I hope we get a version of the Master again. Because remember when the toymakers gold tooth was picked up by someone. He did say the master was sealed in his gold tooth. I think my favourite version of the Master was the Missy and tenth doctor version. And the 13th doctor Master was so unhinged and so giddy that he was so fun to watch. Who can forget the Rasputin

We know we won’t see the Master in this series, confirmed by Moffat but they have already said that he isn’t dead. The toymaker has trapped him somewhere after they had a confrontation. The toymaker is an old character but I don’t think we have ever met his family so what is coming or how many members of his family there are, we don’t know. The one who waits is something new as far as I know and I’ve been watching Who since Tom Baker.
A mention of Susan Foreman his granddaughter and how this whole thing started along with the pantheon that the toymaker said would be coming, very clever 4th wall break at the beginning of which did give me chills and i could kinda see coming. Murray Gold actually made a Cameo as Maestro on the Piano at the end in the musical number i love how the doctor has some awareness of the 4th wall because he says I thought that was non diegetic. Who is the oldest one? and how was he at Ruby’s Birth. Who is the one who waits? It feels so fresh and brand new, but at the same time, RTD really made it feel like I’m back watching the Eccleston/Tennant episodes. It’s such a great mixture of feelings.
Maestro mentioned the old one which isn’t a reference to Susan or any of that, it seems like ruby might be connected with a potential leader of the pantheon. The old one would insinuate he’s the oldest of everything so I think ruby is the child of a deity related to the pantheon which is why maestro seemed so spooked 24:53
Could be both. The old one stole susans baby and brought her to the past to mess with the doctor
So great to have Murray Gold back on the soundtrack, really makes a difference, especially on musical themes episodes.
For real bring so much life to the series
I'll definitely miss Akinola's lovely style, but I do love Gold's music
Meastro is absolutely terrifying for being so fabulous. I also think Ruby isnt related to the Doctor but instead related to the toymaker maybe the youngest kid or a child of one of his kids.
I dunno about fabulous. All the excess make up makes her look more like a Clown. than anything.
Yea she definitely reflects maestros outfit as well liek a more fluid version of them just more human
Why did the Abbey Road pedestrian crossing look the same in 1963 as it did in 1969?
Jealous
I did see a photo of Capaldi's Doctor, a barefoot Clara, and a Dalek recreating the iconic Beatles image.
It's not about self-protection, but
"music......is MIIIIINE"
Plus their plan to block more and more music, to get stronger, to then stop the entire universe from moving and making music.
The way im giggling at you guys being introduced to Jinkx! 😊
I'm SO GLAD people are enjoying Jinx Monsoon as the maestro they're fantastic and theatrical and so well fitted to a campy doctor who villain ❤
the 4th wall break into the intro was the most beautiful thing ive seen in the new season so far... it was 🤌
Love the doctor who reactions loving this doctor he has slipped into the role so well
Best episode of Doctor Who I’ve seen in years. I really hope we get to see Maestro again!
I think mentioning Susan all of the sudden was intentional. I think she's related to the mystery surrounding Ruby (maybe even being her mother). And i would imagine that Susan is coming back into the show in one way or another sooner rather than later
Maybe she is Susan and her body regressed perhaps some way? I doubt it but that would be freaking cool
I’m just here for Jinkx Monsoon, I’ve never watched Dr who. Maybe this will make me a fan!
She is probably one of the best villains in 60years of the show. For real
Same.
@@VictorSilva-ko2vkJinkx is a freaking icon and stellar actress. I love the way she delivers lines and you know every take was something different.
Me too and she was fantastic!
This scene when she was playing the piano and people hearing it got emotional was so beautiful
Fun fact my granddad was actually there at the first studio recording of the beatles as a sound technician ❤
Perhaps he'll be the embodiment of curiosity?
The twist thing was a joke. A poorly done one that led to a nonsensical musical number.
@@jonathangoodwin5609 RTD is dropping triples like Em , yeah it's a joke but it's also a Susan and there is still at least one left. 😉
@@TheCagedCorvidor adventure or maybe even stories to tell
The Harbinger was the twist at the end.
At the end in the corridor the two dancer they are dancing with are from the British tv show Strictly Come dancing and the woman is Shirley Ballas the head judge on the show and the man is Johannes Radebe a professional dancer. Ps Shirley's son is mark ballas a professional on dancing with the stars also derek and julianne hough consider her their second mother.
I love that the actual composer Murray Gold appears at the end in the musical number with playing the piano.
They went back to the same year doctor who was created. I LOVE IT.
Wait when in the episode was that heard?
@@The-Busy-Beeeee right when the Maestro plays the piano in the future and the Tardis starts responding to their music. When I turned on captions on Disney+, it even specifically said "[Playing Saxon theme off-key]". Four rapid notes, then a change in pitch and four more. At first I had thought it was an allusion, but it is directly called out for the motif that it is.
@@mixofreak OMG I LOVE THAT SO MUCH THANK YOU
@@The-Busy-Beeeee, you're welcome!
Keep it up 👍
This episode is absolutely FANTASTIC !!
I love the fourth wall breaks, and the meta jokes, in this episode.
Also I think the general theory is that Ruby is Susan's daughter, but I think she might be somehow related to the pantheons.
Oh snap i missed that tidbit about the giggle. wow cool
I love how this episode explores how the arts are just as important to humanity's survival as any tech or invention we build.
Jinkx!!!!! I love her. I saw her play Audrey in NYC's “Little Shop Of Horror”! She’s amazing! Fan from the start.
😊❤ 13:35. I thought I recognized the melody that Ruby is playing. Greg, when a Milli told you in the interview that Rubys theme she liked for her as the companion that’s the song she’s playing right now in this scene that’s Ruby’s song.
What's your Favorite creative use of Music in a Movie or Show??
Across the Universe. Surreal and outstanding movie that had The Beatles music as it’s soundtrack. Excellent movie and music.
once more with feeling, buffy.
Soundtrack to Gladiator is amazing, 2 other older movies with great soundtracks are 1492 and the German film Das Boot
I loved this episode so much! Some of my favorites where music was integral to telling the story, part of the plot or weaponized: Six String Samurai, Kung Fu Hustle, Mars Attacks, Multiverse Of Madness, Scott Pilgrim (Film & Series), Westworld, Cloud Atlas, BTVS/Once More With Feeling, The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings/Futurama, Schmigadoon, Inception, Cowboy Bebop, Star Wars, The Fifth Element, Breakfast At Tiffany's & too numerous to list here noteworthy themes, musicals, operas, soundtracks & scores.
You guys really need to monitor your comment section, so many rude people who can't take opinions
So instead of the doctor finding out what origin the alien is he runs for the first half the show now
I liked that battle but of course if you, we don't see that just after this one. Like writers don't do that because kingboy doesn't like it. It was okay here but won't be if we don't see new tools and ways the sonic does.

I love that Greg saw the doctor break the glass and was like “um???”
Maestro had locked him in the room, you must’ve missed it lol
If the Doctor was that scared of Maestro and the Toymaker, imagine how scared he’s gonna be of the one who waits.
I've met Jinkx and they're absolutely lovely. Incredibly talented.
I rewatched the toy maker episode after this, and I'm fully convinced the toy makers "spice world" moment was foreshadowing his child being the next to shown up
Longtime fans are probably posting that Susan appeared in “The Five Doctors” anniversary special back in ‘83.
I loved the 4 notes together like the Master’s heartbeat. Boom the TARDIS is under control
This being a secret metaphor for certain patents/copyrights while fowarding the plot would actually make total sense for the episode going off the season so far
I also will totally be playing the ending song when something does not go according to plan in my life now 😂
I have been waiting for this one with bated breath from the moment I saw the promos with Jinx Monsoon. They are one of my favorite performers, and was just perfect for this role. Jinx is a powerhouse. I hope they have them back in the future. Awesome episode❤
Funny you guys mentioned Ursula vibe for Jinkx, she has been the #1 fan casting for a long time!
Susan was left in 2164.
She was an adult, so it was time to set out on her own, I guess.
Her name is Jinkx and she is my new favorite villain
Great Reaction Greg and John! 👍
Jinkx she was fantastic in this. She needs to come back again. Congrats to her she was a fantastic Villain
It just made sense.
bro why do you comment like 50 comments a video?
One of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever. The stunning cinematography(the lighting!), the performances, music and that character! Really just amazing. I hope whoever shot this episode shoots all of the episodes.
This episode was so chaotic. This Maestro character was so unhinged and crazy.
Fun fact the show composer Murray gold is actually in the musical number scene at the ends playing the piano. Doctor Who Legend
NPH plays one of the most charismatic and unhinged villain since ages
And then, Jinkx Monsoon enters the room...
Little fun fact, she told in an interview that Michelle Gomez's Missy was one of her main inspiration for the manerism of Maestro
12:34 Susan could return the actress is still alive and is 83
ive never watched dr who but watching ppl see jinx and love her performance is heartwarming
The biggest change I've noticed is travel in the TARDIS is a lot faster now.
Doctor looking like Undercover Brother and Maestro looks like Winnifred Sanderson.
yes this is episode 2 even though the Christmas special is the actual 1st episode. think of the Christmas episode as episode 0.
(While at the same time being thrilled that they brought up Susan!*)
Plus the Toymaker’s Pantheon is brilliant.
(Not me - I was just thrilled to get to see the Seventh Doctor again!) But there is no reason why someone close to the Doctor (say Leela or Romana) couldn’t have dropped her off a Tardis of her own or rescued her after David’s death.]
Great reaction, guys 💜💜➕🟦
I think it is Susan. She is the one who is waiting!

Jinkx Monsoon plays the villain who is the Toymakers Daughter incredibly well, there was a The Saxon Theme when Maestro was playing the piano and I absolutely loved that
