    The Meep appeared in a Doctor Who comic book arc in 1980 and was a story involving the Fourth Doctor in a story called The Star Beast. That is why in the opening credits it states that the episode was written by Davies but is also gave credit to the author and illustrator of the comic with the same name.
    Also Bernard Cribbins passed away after the filming of the three specials and there were some set photos released of Bernard in character in a wheelchair being pushed by The Doctor outside of the TARDIS, so hopefully he will be appearing at some point and the Doctor Who fam can say a proper goodbye to a much loved character and actor.

    I had absolutely nothing against Jody Whittaker, in fact I thought she did an absolutely amazing job playing the doctor, I just HATED that she wasn’t given good material to work with, because the prospect of a female doctor is just awesome. It makes me sad, but alas, given that we have now had a female doctor, it stands to reason we probably will again, and hopefully the writing for them will be better than it was for Jody. They really did her dirty.
    Edit: I wrote this comment in the early area of the review part, so I hadn’t gotten to the bit where you basically said the same thing.

      Jodi Whittaker is right up there alongside Paul McGann as the greatest squandered potential in DR Who history. Episode 1, she did the thing. The one thing. She made me believe she was the doctor. But the writing was so clunky, and she wasn't even the main character in most episodes, it felt like.

    They announced Bernard Cribbins was coming back for the specials around the same time after David and Catherine were. There is exactly ONE photo of him shooting a scene, and he's in a wheelchair. While I think the solution to the metacrisis was a bit too simple, I also think this was similar to how River Song gave up the rest of her regenerations to heal the 11th Doctor, in that they released all of the energy due to being in a kind of post regeneration phase.

    edit: I do agree that the "let it go" thing is a little simplistic, but honestly I don't mind too much because that's so Doctor Who to me---sometimes there's solutions to things that really work mostly because the audience wants it to work, not because it would hold up under any real-world logic, and that's part of what gives the show its fun, childlike sense that I think draws a lot of people to it

I mean if you want to go down that route and assume people's gender, you're literally going to have to ask every person you meet what they identify as! Well, why the hell would I waste my time talking to people then? I just keep it moving! Maybe if someone's drowning I'll stop to ask them what's their preferred pronoun, before I save their life. If I don't get feedback I'll just keep it moving I guess. Lol is so stupid! Oh by the way I still think Asians are the superior race! Well I'm off to watch anime hope you have a wonderful day!

    as a fan of Jodie Whitaker since long before doctor who having first seen her in Attack the Block and Broadchurch along side Tennant I was excited with the casting and hopeful for some great stories and a new Era of Who with a female lead. However I feel the problem fully where Jodie was concerned was purely the Material she was being given to work with on screen, old Who flowed so well blending a mix of fun , seriousness , world issues, stereotypes sci fi and silliness etc so well into a singular episode where as Chibnall's writing just didn't find that formula in my opinion and came off trying to hard in every aspect to be something of the past while failing at it horribly, i personally feel this is the best who since Capaldi and welcome Ncuti in to the Tardis with open arms next !! hope things keep getting better from here !

    I loved this ep! Tennant and Tate slipped right back into their roles while still showing that their characters have matured.
    RTD has never been shy or subtle when it comes to depicting gender norms or fluid sexuality, so I thought the trans representation and spotlighting of the non-binary aspect of Time Lords/DoctorDonna/Rose was fitting.
    I took the "let it go" line to be a joke about men holding onto things but it didn't quite land. It would have been better to aim it specifically at Ten not being able to let things go because that's such an integral part of his character.

    Heyo it’s me your fellow Whovian fact finder. Here’s the facts for this episode, unlike the others on your journey so far there’s only been 2 days to collect/find facts unlike the others which have had at minimum a year at maximum 18 years to gather.
    The star beast facts
    🔷 The Doctor's Theme is briefly heard when the Doctor uses his screwdriver. Likewise, a variation of the Eleventh Doctor theme song "I Am The Doctor" is heard in this episode specifically the scene where the Doctor Donna is activated.
    🔷 The Star Beast marks the first appearance of the Fourteenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver on television. The Circumstanes surrendering why he has a new Sonic are not revealed in episode but instead in the Fourteenth Doctor Comic Story Liberation of The Daleks.
    🔷 The title card includes a credit for Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons as the writers of the comic story it was based on.
    🔷 The Star Beast aired one year, one month, and two days after The Power of the Doctor, marking the longest gap between two consecutive stories since the show's return to TV in 2005.
    🔷 An in-vision commentary was released on BBC iPlayer immediately after the episode, which featured David Tennant, Phil Collinson, and Vicki Delow. It was recorded on 19th April 2023, according to Georgia Tennant's Instagram post, in which Tennant talks about Russell T Davies possibly not being able to do it the next day.
    🔷 Though The Star Beast is not the first TV story to be adapted from other media, most other adaptations were written by the the same person as the original source material, such as Dalek (adapted from Jubilee) l, Human Nature, and The Lodger.
    🔷 In his opening monologue the Fourteenth Doctor starts off by saying "Once Upon a Time Lord". Prior to this episode, there has been a graphic novel and a comic story had this as their title.
    🔷 The Whoniverse ident is shown at the beginning of the BBC version, whereas the BBC ident is shown at the beginning of the Disney+ version.
    🔷 Although not explicit at the time of release, the Redacted audio drama Redemption leads directly into The Star Beast, as the characters Cleo Proctor and Apex Costa watch the Meep's star cruiser fly through the skies of Camden Town
    🔷 Doctor Who The Official Annual 2024 contained several works of fiction which teased some of the characters in The Star Beast: The short story We Are Family hinted towards the reunion of the Nobles and the Doctor, and Rose meeting the Meep
    🔷 Bingham briefly mistakes the Fourteenth Doctor for the Tenth, referencing his involvement with UNIT in The Sontaran Stratagem , etc. The Doctor likewise recalls that he was UNIT's first scientific advisor, as seen in Spearhead from Space. (3rd Doctor)
    🔷 The Doctor carries a Barrister's Wig and conducts a trial like his fourth incarnation in The Stones of Blood.
    🔷 The Doctor mentions the Sonic Screwdriver is good at resonating concrete. He mentioned this before in the episode The Doctor Dances. (9th Doctor)

    This was such an interesting return. Obviously the production getting that huge budget increase with the Disney co-financing helps distinguish this new era. Then there's also the story of this special which I think felt a bit rushed to resolution for the whole Donna dies plot. I think it's a fine resolution just didn't have an impact.

    • @robbo_96
      @robbo_96 8 месяцев назад +2

      Disney co-financing isn't necessarily a good thing, everything they've been churning out lately has just been lazy, watered down, commercial, nostalgia bait. It may well distinguish it but not in a good way. I always think less is more, which is why Eccleston's series is one of the best ever. It's very far removed from what it used to be, and has forgone story for preachyness

    • @dylanburton4955
      @dylanburton4955 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@robbo_96The higher budget is definitely a benefit for a show like Doctor Who, considering how popular the show is it deserves a bigger budget so they aren’t so limited and they’re not involved creatively
      The series hasn’t forgone story for “preachiness” at all, it’s always done stuff like that even in the first era with representation. It was done well and felt natural, some stuff was a tiny bit of the nose but it doesn’t matter. If anything it’s a good way to weed out the homophobic/transphobic fans who deserve to feel offended over their problematic views. It’s a part of life now and something that needs to be accepted and normalised
      The character of Rose highly resonated with my partner and brother who are both trans so clearly it meant alot of them which was good. Everyone deserves to have a character that resonates with them
      It was way better done then when Chibnall would do it cuz RTD is just a better doctor who writer

    • @robbo_96
      @robbo_96 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@dylanburton4955 the thing is when you force a message or an agenda on the audience then they're more likely to reject it. You said it best when the revival series first came out the use of representation did feel natural and was well-written i.e. with the inclusion of Jack Harkness. We accepted him as a loveable rogue who was treated as a normal human like anyone else. His sexuality wasn't laboured on nor was there a need by the producers to remind us of modern-day social justice issues, which actually dates it more (giving it's a show that spans all of space and time) and in the long run makes it more irrelevant. He was who he was, and in other TV shows (Star Trek TOS and TNG come to mind) there's countless episodes where the moral of the story is people overcoming prejudices, but they were told subtly through analogies and metaphors, not through a very obvious message that takes more priority than entertaining the viewer, or more priority than plot and character development.
      I have no issue with representation, and in recent history the Bill and Frank episode in The Last of Us is a great example of how messages of inclusivity can be worked in really well; it was a well-written love story between two people who happened to be gay, and there was no shoehorned line about how they were treated worse than straight guys, as that would've been irrelevant to, and distracted from, the overall theme/plot of the show. Likewise with the new DW, I don't mind there's a trans character but does there have to be obligatory lines about pronouns or how the Doctor was better when a female? It takes us the audience out of it.
      Also higher budget doesn't guarantee higher quality, as it can force the producers to take the easy "bigger is better" approach, but you can risk it becoming an incoherent, overblown mess that takes away from what the show special in the first place. Sometimes a smaller budget forces greater creativity to overcome the limited resources.

      "Marxism in action or a West End musical" right? I'd forgotten about that line 😂
      It's funny to me how people have retconned the show's history in their mind. They always blame Chibnall for making it woke (personally I have 1000 other problems with his writing and woke doesn't factor into it lol) but we had Bill in s10, Clara mentioned kissing women, River talked about having ex wives, Vastra and Jenny in Smith's era, very obvious allegories to racism, even timelords switching gender was introduced back in s6 with the Corsair.
      If Jack was introduced in 2023 they would lose their minds 😂
      The man was unstoppable, flirting with everyone! His arrival established that humans are basically all bisexual the 51st century too. Also the Doctor's first kiss in new Who which they seem to have completely forgotten.

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 8 месяцев назад

      @@hanonhold The main issue is that Chibnall's era is suffering from a huge disconnect between what the show wants to say is right or wrong and what the "good guys" and the "bad guys" do.
      For example in that infamous spider episode the Doctor is adamant about using guns but then advocates to let the spiders starve to death or die painfully when they grow too big.
      Or the Amazon... I mean Kablam episode that was either about working conditions or the repercussions of automation or both but in the end the Doctor decided to just blow the terrorist up and all was well, I guess?
      Or remember that fun time when the Doctor defeated the Master by exposing and handing him, a person of color(!), to the Nazis?
      And that is basically what brought this era from the old woke to the new woke: from being aware of injustice in society etc. to being pretentious about it.

The pacing was a bit weird and some of the writing felt a fair bit forced (the whole male presenting timelord "let it go" moment was super contrived) which was a shame. The resolution to the metacrisis felt like a cop out and donna and rose aquiring impossible knowledge about the doctors life aince they last saw them meant we missed out on a dramatic big reunion.
