I had an older 5hp Honda and it was great. I didn't care for the vibration though so I went back to their small 8hp twin. A few pounds heavier but much smoother and a bit more power. Today's 8hp four strokes are much heavier than the old BF8 Classic.
Also love this engine, got one for 180€ just had to replace a seal on the gearbox Just one hour and 20€in materials so worth it. Love this little engine very fuel efficient and so solidly build. Only disadvantage is that it’s quite heavy
I have a chance at buying this dirt cheap believe its a 1998 model but looks exactly like yours hope i can get it. How would you rate this compared to a similar 5 hp mercury?
From experience, the Honda’s are much more solid than the Mercs. Sounds like the Merc will be 2 stroke around that year.. so very different engines. The Merc will probably be a bit lighter and may be a bit quicker but it all depends on what you’re doing. If you’re using in a lake you might lean towards the lighter engine but if using in the sea I’d choose the stronger engine of the 2 which in my opinion will be the Honda. If it were my choice I’d go for the best condition of the 2 engines. Happy boating !

I keep thinking of upgrade to one of those. Not seen a clean enough one yet though. lol

Heavy yep, I guess that’s the price we pay to have the solid reliability.
Nothing like a review for a 20 yr old motor.... 😉 They are great though, I love mine.
