  • Installing a new dishwasher isn't as difficult as you might expect. Why call a plumber when you can do-it-yourself?
    Materials you’ll need:
    -Reciprocating saw (as needed)
    -Wood trim (as needed)
    -Circular saw (as needed)
-Finishing nails (as needed for new trim)
-Nail set (as needed for new trim)
-90-degree elbow with 3/8" N.P.T. external threads on one end (check your owner's manual); the other end must fit your water line.
-3/8" O.D. copper tubing with compression fitting
    -Plumber's tape
    -Adjustable wrench
-Drain hose and clamps(usually provided with appliance)
    -Drill
    -2" saw hole drill bit
    -Tongue and groove pliers
    -Pliers
-New drain pipes or P-trap kit (if necessary)
    -Small bucket
-Tee with compression fittings (for water line)
    -Tube cutter
-Tail piece for drain pipe (if necessary)
    -Nutdriver
-Phillips head screwdriver or similar drill bit
Basic requirements for the dishwasher location:
Easy access to water, electricity and drain
Clearance for the dishwasher door to fully open
Minimum 2" clearance between the sides of the dishwasher door and any obstructing cabinet or wall
    Correct size opening
    Cabinet front perpendicular to floor
    Before getting started:
Always read your owner's manual thoroughly and pay special attention to safety precautions before attempting any project. Just as important is reading the owner's manual of any tools, cutting device... for safety awareness.
Here are the steps you'll take in this project:
    1. Measure an existing opening or create a new one next to the sink. The opening she created was 24" wide and 34" tall. Check your owner's manual for the product dimensions you will need to consider. Just be sure the opening is the correct size for your new dishwasher. Teresa used a reciprocating saw to cut an opening.
    2. Add wood trim, as necessary, around the opening to enhance appeal. You may need to use a circular saw to cut your trim pieces to size. Use finishing nails and a nail set as you affix trim pieces to the cabinetry.
    3. Connect water, electrical and drain lines to the dishwasher before sliding it into the opening. When making the water line connection, wrap plumber's tape around elbow threads to prevent leaks. Use an adjustable wrench and a pair of pliers to tighten compression fitting nuts to connect your water line to the dishwasher at the water inlet valve. If not already connected at the factory, make your electrical line connections following the detailed instructions in your owner's manual. Be very careful to follow all national and local codes and ordinances for electrical connections. Connect the drain hose to the drain outlet on the dishwasher using a hose clam and pliers.
    4. Drill a hole in the cabinet wall to access line connection points under the sink. Use a hole saw bit to create an opening wide enough for the lines to go through.
    5. Move dishwasher close enough to the opening to feed the lines through the hole in the cabinet wall. After all three lines have been inserted into the hole, push the dishwasher part of the way into the opening, then carefully pull the lines through the hole. Repeat this process until the dishwasher fits snugly into the opening.
    6. Remove drain pipes and P-trap system under the sink by using tongue and groove pliers to loosen couplings. Check the structural integrity of all pipes and P-trap, looking for corrosion or weak spots & replace as needed.
    7. Turn off the hot water at the water heater.
    8. Turn on the kitchen sink "hot" faucet valve to drain hot water into a small bucket in the sink.
    9. Loosen and remove the hot water supply line fittings along with a section of the line under the sink.
    10. Use a tube cutter to cut the section of pipe. Add the tee where you made the cut, using compression fittings and plumber's tape as before.
    11. Reconnect the pipe with the tee under the sink, making sure the tee opening faces the dishwasher. Securely tighten all couplings.
    12. Use your tube cutter to trim off excess copper tubing, then connect the copper tubing (water line) from the dishwaher to the tee fitting on the water supply line using a compression fitting.
    13. If your sink does not have a waste disposer (which should have a knockout plug for the drain port you would connect the dishwasher drain hose to), disconnect a section of drain pipe above the trap.
    14. Cut the drain pipe section and add a tail piece.
    15. Reconnect the drain pipe section under the sink, tightening all couplings. Connect the dishwasher drain hose to the tail piece using a hose clamp.
    16. Reconnect all P-trap fittings, securing tightly.
    17. Insert three-prong power supply cord plug into AC outlet under the sink.
    18. Turn hot water back on at the hot water heater valve.
    19. Using a screwdriver or screwdriver bit on your drill, drive the screws (provided) that will secure your dishwasher to the counter top.
    20. When you first use your new dishwasher, inspect all plumbing connections under the sink to make sure there are no leaks due to loose fittings.

This was really helpful; simple straightforward and to the point without extra unnecessary information or rambling like some DIY videos have.

@ 2:46 the plumbers tape should have been done clockwise to prevent unwrapping during installation.

The drain line needs to be hung inside the cabinet before connected to garbage disposal per dishwasher instructions to prevent sewer gas and back up even if has a loop on dishwasher. My dishwasher came with a plastic tie to hang it and it also has loop on side of it.

That's the wrong direction to wrap the plumber's tape.
    Yes, it does matter.

Finding a metal p-trap that's corroded all the way through might tell ya you should upgrade to the plastic drain pipes everyone else is using :D
