Regarding the resolution. Perhaps I've missed something but 4k video is about 8.3 megapixels and the R6 clearly has higher resolution than that (20). After a quick check on google the R6 has a max. image resolution of 5472 x 3648. With that you could print 46x30cm (18x12 inches) in 300dpi, high resolution. Plenty in almost any situation.
20MP is more than enough if you need to crop like 70 or 80 percent a high megapixel won't look that much better (like many people think) and you can now upscale with no noticeable loss in quality in photoshop if you upscale it by converting it to a smart object. I can comfortably print 24x36 with the R6 and get a great print even when compared with the GFX 100 using this method.
Nice photoshoot and review. About the pixel count - 20 compared with 24 MP is only 8.7% reduction in linear resolution. Probably won't be easily visible in a cropped print.
Thanks! Like I said, it’s just personal preference for my kind of work outside RUclips - even if I was only a RUclips photographer, I also don’t like that the 100% crop doesn’t completely fill in my 4K video file =\
Honestly I’ve had the R and The R6, compared both and to my surprise, the R6 seemed sharper. Both on tripod, same lens, same settings. This shpuldn’t be a deal breaker for anyone. From 20-30mp, you don’t see a difference. 20mp is more than enough, if cropping is an issue, learn to crop while shooting. And honestly not many portrait photographers do extreme cropping. Maybe in printing there’s an issue. But who prints huge? If you’re career Requires huge prints then of course get the R5.
I’ve tried both with the 28-70 f2 and the R and R6 are both sharp, I haven’t compared the files side by side but I didn’t have any sharpness issues while I was using the R. Like I said with the MP it’s just personal preference - if it’s enough for you then great, but everyone has their own wants/needs in a camera. There’s no one size fits all :)
Thats based on the new sensor which is sharper and captures more details then the older ones. Canon did a comparison of the 26mp RP vs the 20mp R6 and the R6, even with having 6mp less, is producing a more detailed and sharper images. At the same time the R5 with it’s 45mp sensor may be comparable to a 55-60mp sensor when it comes to resolution and details.
Love this video, Gorgeous shots!! You just create magic with every photoshoot you do, hope one day I can be half as talented as you are... PLEASE keep making Canon R6 & R5 videos :D Am enjoying them to the fullest.
That's exactly right. To give an example, I printed a 13x19 image from both the R6 and the Sony a7rII (42mp) and there was 0 difference between the two up close, let alone hanging on a wall. I think consumers have forgotten how large a 20mp image actually is. Even a 16mp image printed at 13x19 looks really really good.

Resolution is absolutely fine I think. Other professional camera have even less. And the new sensor is actually as sharp as a 25-26 mp camera or even sharper. The benefit of having 20mp instead of more is a better low light noise behavior!

I just got an R6 and coming from a 5d Mark III for weddings with a 6D also, the 20mp seems find to me. Those printed 24x30 fine. That's the largest I usually print with most being 16x20 or less. I don't crop as much as I used to. I work on getting it right in camera and not lazy shooting with crop.
read somewhere that the 28-70mm lens still gets up to 8 stops of IS even though the lens itself doesn't have OIS...did you find that to be the case when Dan was filming with it?
The difference between 24 and 20 MP in a print is quite small.... A printed image would only be 9.5% wider and 9.5% higher with 24 instead of 20MP. 24/20= 1.2 and sqrt(1.2) = 1.09544... The same goes for cropping: a tiny 1.095x- crop of a 24 MP image has 20MP

I was in the camera sales business from 2001 to about 2012 when this whole Dslr game started. and every manufacture rep I ever spoke to flat out said MPs are used more as a marketing tool for consumers. That's not to say MPs are not important, but they only tell part of the story. you can have a 100mp sensor and it doesn't mean jack if the processor is not getting the most out of the pixels. That'd why we dont see a huge difference between the 30mp R which has a 5 year old processor and a 20mp R6 with a new processor.

No idea how she did it, but most got it from colorfidelity. That’s a site/guy who creates profiles that are very very close to the native raw development canon has. I was going to throw away Lightroom as many images where crap with „way off“ colors that couldn’t be saved by edits compared to canons native development. hey Julia. how is the battery life of the canon R6? I hope to buy canon r6 over sony a7iv. but I'm struggling because many said that the r6 battery life is lower than sony. I shoot weddings. so can I rely on canon r6 battery life?
I love the photos from this shoot! They turned out amazing from the R6. I recently picked up an R5 after contemplating whether to get it or the R6. I spoke to the experts on Canon's Live Chat service and they ran through all the specs of each and helped me decide which one was best for my needs. Would recommend it to any looking for good advice!
suprisingly they adviced you the expensive one :) I'm in the same dilema now. I would love to think that 20MP is enough... and it actually is but mmmm... 20, I mean I would really like 26
great review.. can you review the sony a7siii+24-70 gm / 85gm for photos? I know it is made for video but I just want to see if it is enough for social media posts only ??
Thank you! And yess I’m currently working on an A7siii review which includes photos as well. Still need to film some more before I can finish the video but I will share it soon!
3:45 Wrong. Where did you get that from? 20MP photos totally fit and surpass the size of 4k video. The pictures from the R6 have a resolution of 5472 x 3648 pixels. 9 megapixels are enough to fit 4k resolution
Great work! I own the r5 and the r6. I do suggest getting a battery grip to balance the weight for the 28-70 due to the lens is so front heavy!. Your LUTs look incredible. I am going to purchase them!
would you rec. the r5 or r6 for portrait photography b/c of the MP difference? I have an R6 but I wonder if I need to change to the R5 b/c of the MP difference
@@tammyford2037 I would say if you’re not going to print enlargements I would stick with the r6 and save your money. I have done many macro beauty headshots with the r6 and have not loss quality. This is when the glass comes into play :)
Do your images go on billboards? I learned that it's all about the resolution not how big the file is to print. You can print decent size images with 1MB. I could be wrong..but yeah
You’re not wrong. I’m a graphic designer / photographer and I have done quite a few billboards. The picture quality isn’t really that important when viewed From a distance. I’ve gotten away with some questionable resolution which looked great from the road. It’s probably more important for large scale advertising where viewers can be near or far from the image. But in that case the imagery is secondary, the most important part is the message and the text being legible.
Julia, I've bought several presets from different photographers, but yours are the only ones I can use cuz they look the same as you showed in the examples. The presets from others are like : "wtf how do I get the same effect like in their examples??" I love you and your presets and your videos! Merry Xmas!
Ahh thank you!! That makes me so happy to hear 😄 I try to share before and after examples with NO tweaking on my website so it’s easier to see what the presets do!
The low pass filter on the sensor makes it just about as sharp as any 24 mb camera. So I don't think it's a disadvantage but an advantage due to smaller size files.
I’m using the 28-70 on the R5 :) really loving the lens, and the files SOOC, (and editing them as well! ) I didn’t like the colours on my 5d4 (compared to my 5d3) however, much prefer both the resolution and colours from the R5! :) the dynamic range is much friendlier than the 5D4 or R, and I am really loving the Eye AF too - even working reliably at 1.2 - you can focus on interacting with your subject, letting the camera do the work - perfect for kids, or people who aren’t as comfortable in front of the camera, as if it is pointing in the right direction it should be in focus, and you should be able to capture ‘the shot’ or moment consistently!
So you retired the 5D for the a7iii? Whaaaat? Well, i seriously can't blame you. My favorite images of yours have all been captured on the a7iii, especially the one you use for your youtube banner. I LOVE that picture so much!!! It's a masterpiece! ❤️
These photos are beautiful! So happy to see more Asian models on your channel! Tash’s hair is so soft and silky! And she had really cool movement! I use the crop tool all the time and sometimes, I’ll think a portrait doesn’t look quite right and then I’ll crop in real close and I’ll think, oh THERE IT IS! So I understand the issue with the megapixel count. Would you be able to compare the eos R vs R6?
Thank you so much! And yess Tashiana was amazing, could you believe this was one of her first few shoots ever? She was so good! And yeah I’ll see if I can borrow both of them, that would be a fun comparison :D
@@christionbarnes4673 Using live-view is impractical when taking photos. Having your arms close to your body and the camera resting on your head offers much more stability.
I like it for a few reasons, the main one is that I feel more open to dialogue with my subject when I can see them and they see me, this is more handy when I’m shooting weddings and have a couple who isn’t super comfortable in front of the camera. I find that they relax more when they can see my face and I can talk/give directions more openly rather than having my face buried in a camera. Like Christion said, it’s also really handy for getting weird angles without having to contort my body. I also feel like it’s a little unsanitary to have my face constantly touching the camera and from a vanity point of view, I also don’t like constantly squinting when using the viewfinder - the Australian sun is harsh enough I don’t need to add to my future wrinkles by always squinting while shooting lol
The issue with focusing on MP is that it really depends on the sensor and other factors. MP is a terrible way to decide on a camera. For example - my cellphone boasts a 108mp image - does anyone think it’s a better image than the R6?
Both lenses are really sharp, good AF, etc. But I just love this 28-70, the image renders so nicely, I love the bokeh and it just has a really nice “feel” to the images. I would love to make a comparison video one day to explain it, it’s kinda hard in a comment haha but hopefully that helps!
I think it’s a great focal range for travelling and beautiful image quality as well, the only downside I would see with it is it’s size and weight! It might be a bit big for me personally to carry around especially if I’m hiking, etc, but if you don’t mind that then yeah it would be great :)
How do you get around uploading your vertical photos on Instagram? Sorry I’m quite new and am looking for answers. I’ve had Instagram crop ruin some of my vertical shots, can anyone help?
Use the button that Instagram provides to zoom out of you image to get a portrait/vertical image. For the rest: make sure when shooting that you step back a little so that you are able to crop to Instagram form factor later. Also keep in mind that Instagram tends to zoom/show the center of the image when it’s displayed in a smaller form factor so stepping back when shooting will help you getting more cropping space around your subject
It may be an issue for prints that are larger than 16" x 20," but there are a lot of other variables that can impact image quality, as I'm sure you know.
I tend to get crop happy when editing so having a whole bunch of extra megapixels can be very helpful. Depending on the situation I go by the rule of you can always crop in but you can't crop out lol 👍
I am amazed how far better I liked your photos with the 1.2 35mm. Even if I prefer the looks of your current model by far to the blond in the older posts - a misleading factor always to consider with male audience. Neither of the lenses make sense for me, budget- and looks-like. Am actually just getting additions to my old Leica R f2 35mm. I've ordered the Tamron f2.8 in this focal length. Your excellent use of the 35mm focal length through various videos and its use in the review of the luminous Sigma for closeups encouraged me to go for a macro option. Getting closer for subject separation rather then using low aperture figures! I'll also most likely getting the 7 artisans - these manual focus lenses tend to be a cool compromise between true vintage and the to me somehow too perfect looks of the tech monsters - as an amateur I can take photos at my pace. I also don't need to care about corner sharpness - which I don't need as I nearly always shoot 3dimensional motives
Honestly unless you either print extremely big or crop very very heavily ( at that stage you should be investing in a longer focal length) Most pro photographers either shoot for online, small print size and even vogue etc don't need that many MP. I get it's a preference but for that price difference it's just not needed! The only competitor really is the a7 iv but then if you're a wedding shooter i can't even imagine how much sd card and hard drive space you need for 10k+ 33mp photos lmaoo
@@juliatrotti : thank you for your response :) if you were a canon shooter would you say you’d stick with the 28-70 for your portraits or still use primes on it ? I’m really stuck on which route to take😭
@@MrDonuts10 good question. I recently moved from primes to getting the RF28-70 and I love it. It really is a prime quality lense in a zoom. But: the new Rf primes are even better than usually primes. To canon upped the game with the RF system ^^. Still you get a lot of flexibility with the Ed 28-70 and I was actually very surprised after shooting mainly with a 50mm prime and looking into a 85mm portrait lense, that I started to love wider shots (35mm and below) more for portraits than 85mm! Anyway: the Ed 28-70 basically is a portrait beast that’s gives full flexibility. I really like the 70mm as I found out that more zoom often looked boringly flat to me. Currently the rf28-70 is my only lense I have on the r5 :)
@@Seitenwerk : yeah man I rented the 28-70 and really loved it, used it for a wedding. I come from shooting all my portraits with the 35mm 1.4 II. But having the 35mm stops me as it’s almost close to the 50. Maybe I’d benefit more form the 85. Plus the 28-70 is pretty hard to get right now including the 50!

hey Julia. how is the battery life of the canon R6? I hope to buy canon r6 over sony a7iv. but I'm struggling because many said that the r6 battery life is lower than sony. I shoot weddings. so can I rely on canon r6 battery life?
Was the lens up to date with firmware for the test ? I had a 24-105 F4 with old firmware, didnt work with LS on the R6 before updating the lens :)
I love the photos from this shoot! They turned out amazing from the R6. I recently picked up an R5 after contemplating whether to get it or the R6. I spoke to the experts on Canon's Live Chat service and they ran through all the specs of each and helped me decide which one was best for my needs. Would recommend it to any looking for good advice!
suprisingly they adviced you the expensive one :)
I'm in the same dilema now. I would love to think that 20MP is enough... and it actually is but mmmm... 20, I mean I would really like 26
Another amazing BTS SHOOT! I would love to see you use the R6 with a prime lens, and see how it fairs with a lower megapixel count ☺️
great review.. can you review the sony a7siii+24-70 gm / 85gm for photos? I know it is made for video but I just want to see if it is enough for social media posts only ??
Thank you! And yess I’m currently working on an A7siii review which includes photos as well. Still need to film some more before I can finish the video but I will share it soon!
3:45
Wrong.
The picture quality isn’t really that important when viewed
From a distance. I’ve gotten away with some questionable resolution which looked great from the road. It’s probably more important for large scale advertising where viewers can be near or far from the image. But in that case the imagery is secondary, the most important part is the message and the text being legible.
i wish i could find on your blog this images and share them...just because of this video i will buy this lens
This was such a relaxing video😍♥
Julia, I've bought several presets from different photographers, but yours are the only ones I can use cuz they look the same as you showed in the examples. The presets from others are like : "wtf how do I get the same effect like in their examples??"
I love you and your presets and your videos! Merry Xmas!
Ahh thank you!! That makes me so happy to hear 😄 I try to share before and after examples with NO tweaking on my website so it’s easier to see what the presets do!
@@juliatrotti 😘😘
glad canon is finally moving into the modern photography ;-O
The low pass filter on the sensor makes it just about as sharp as any 24 mb camera. So I don't think it's a disadvantage but an advantage due to smaller size files.
Better low light performance also because of those larger pixels
Low pass filter makes photos softer and less detailed
@@jaakkotahtela123 makes for an easier edit, especially on skin. ☺️
Excellent, Julia!
I really like ur work
are you planning on doing another live stream soon?!? i’ve been watching your older ones while i do HW!
Omg yess, I’ve been meaning to do a live stream for the longest time, I just need to set a date and do it!
I completely agree with everything!
Always love your work and your models...😁
What's the name preset for thumbnail?🤔
Why do you use live-view when taking photos, as opposed to the viewfinder?
Not hating, just curious...
Great review Julia! Would love to try this lens sometime, still yet to try it!
Thanks TK ooh you have to try it out, I reckon you’d love it!
Beautiful photo
The issue with focusing on MP is that it really depends on the sensor and other factors. MP is a terrible way to decide on a camera. For example - my cellphone boasts a 108mp image - does anyone think it’s a better image than the R6?
hey everyone..
this gives goosebumps ❤️
how do you think about rf 28-70mm compared to rf 24-70mm in terms of sharpness, rendering and bokeh quality?
Both lenses are really sharp, good AF, etc. But I just love this 28-70, the image renders so nicely, I love the bokeh and it just has a really nice “feel” to the images. I would love to make a comparison video one day to explain it, it’s kinda hard in a comment haha but hopefully that helps!
@@juliatrotti do you think 28-70mm suitable for traveling?
I think it’s a great focal range for travelling and beautiful image quality as well, the only downside I would see with it is it’s size and weight! It might be a bit big for me personally to carry around especially if I’m hiking, etc, but if you don’t mind that then yeah it would be great :)
@@juliatrotti thanks for your reply. Love your works 😁
Killing the game Julia!
Thanks so much!
Still don’t understand why 20 megapixel is an issue. What size print does it become problematic?
It may be an issue for prints that are larger than 16" x 20," but there are a lot of other variables that can impact image quality, as I'm sure you know.
@@patrickfitzgerald2861 thank you, I’ve never printed any bigger than that and thought the images look great, good to know.
EXACTLY 😂😂 i don’t understand why there’s such a need for more unless you’re doing commercial prints.
@@Yesthankyou8 You're welcome!
I tend to get crop happy when editing so having a whole bunch of extra megapixels can be very helpful.
Depending on the situation I go by the rule of you can always crop in but you can't crop out lol 👍
can you make a vidoe about whitebalance
Beautiful! ❤️
That's a heavy RF 28-70, but Julia holds it as if it were a feather 😳
Great work, beautiful model and good lense
Thank you :)
Beautiful video Julia
she is so beautiful
Very chill video I enjoyed watching it to the end cheers.
can you do more R6 videos?!
I have another one I uploaded recently in case you missed it but yes, I still want to shoot more on the R6!
Awesome!
Asian faces shine as well! I am Chinese and feel so glad to watch your videos..
Who is asian? She's just a beautiful model.
@@j.kimmer1509 I thought her origin is Asia judging from what her face looks like and the surname "Chan". Correct me if not
Yess Tashiana is so beautiful! I loved working with her :)
@@j.kimmer1509 The way you said this implies that asians are not beautiful.. a typical white dude answer
Asian, blacks, arabs everyone is beautiful !
@@jinyuli6524 She is
Honestly unless you either print extremely big or crop very very heavily ( at that stage you should be investing in a longer focal length) Most pro photographers either shoot for online, small print size and even vogue etc don't need that many MP. I get it's a preference but for that price difference it's just not needed!
The only competitor really is the a7 iv but then if you're a wedding shooter i can't even imagine how much sd card and hard drive space you need for 10k+ 33mp photos lmaoo
HEY EVERYONE!
I want more ❤️❤️😊😊
How's difference between R5 and R6? It's really nice but i think R5 is still better than R6.
I’m sure she won’t answer this so does anyone know if she replaced her prime lenses for this 28-70 ?
Hey I actually shoot on the Sony A7III for my work and I still only use prime lenses for that :)
Even though it’s not an RF it’s still a beast and superb quality. But I did enjoy using the 28-70 2.0 and I’m wondering if to try out the 50mm 1.2 with my R5 for my wedding needs. But having the 35mm stops me as it’s almost close to the 50. Maybe I’d benefit more form the 85. Plus the 28-70 is pretty hard to get right now including the 50!
pls take portrait and all kind photos from Iphone12promax or pro plsss❤️❤️❤️
I’m going to be doing a photoshoot with the pro max this week - video will be up soon after :D
