The issue of camera anxiety on a trip is something a lot of people will relate to, and also the issue of not letting the camera, or taking photos, dominate things. That was very interesting.

Would you recommend the 28-70 for dark indoors or something like a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 EF with the width and aperture?

I appreciate that you bring issues of mindfulness and a wider perspective (no pun) to photography. I struggle with gear choices and this video highlights that the real choice is always about "who am I" and not "what gear is there to buy." Thank you!

that's whole new perspective on travel cam+lens combo but your statement is super convincing and actually makes sense.. everyone agrees RF28-70 is bulky and very heavy but if I can leave all other prime lenses home since you know you aren't really missing out much by only bringing 28-70 F2, then it suddenly starts to makes sense.

This came at the perfect time as we’re planning to spend a week at a large lake in a VRBO a few hours away, in a couple of weeks. Camera anxiety and fears of spending too much time obsessing over photos and the camera itself are both so close to home for me and your post was really helpful! Thanks for sharing your thoughts;)

The one thing you have that is truly a great talent is noticing your own stress... and even knowing what will stress you and getting ahead of it. Just amazing to see that. It's rare and give yourself a big pat on the back for it. And, I thank you for reminding me to to do the same. I can relate to every part of this video. I have 2 grade school boys with some issues and traveling is immediately stressful. I have done photography my entire life, professionally and now as an 'enthusiast'... and I am trying to hone my skills for a side business doing art. We frequently travel to the coast and there are so many cool things to shoot there.
The thing I have to do is plan time to take photos alone. My family is not always ok with that.. and the weather or opportunities don't care about my planned time. I don't have a way to get models (yet) so I shoot wildlife and landscapes.. Taking bird photos shares some aspects of portraiture.. but for me to shoot at all, I have to find something that can be planned and squeezed into my life.
I also need to practice to remember how to shoot, use my camera, see light, etc. So, there is some stress to push myself to enjoy my passion. So, I balance that the best I can.
For travel... I've decided to upgrade and use the nicest smart phone camera I can get (Pixel 8pro or a Samsung S23) as my travel camera when I don't want my big camera. I've used Pixel's for years and the photos are better than the iphone's I've used. I currently have the Pixel 5 and an iphone 12. (2 phones for work, yay) The Pixel is way better in low light, wide angles, and portraits for me. The iphone is a little better for video. Just a thought; consider your needs for your smart phone and choose wisely. Some people are in the eco system of Apple or google, or Samsung, and the decision is already made.. but I don't care about that.
For me, throwing my camera in my laptop bag would be a guaranteed failure. It would get squeezed into the laptop in a long car ride, dropped by the kids 'helping' me, falling out of the over packed car, etc. Plus, it wouldn't make sense for me to carry that way to the beach, going for a hike to remote locations to shoot, etc. I still need a camera bag. But I like the idea of combining it with my laptop. So I'm getting the Mindshift Photocross 15 for my purposes. I have the 13 but I don't like a sling bag and it's a little too small.
Just some other points to consider for those in a similar dilemma.. and also wanted to thank you for being you. You're awesome!
    -Carl

I own this lens + canon r5, as my first proper camera in a very long time and also thought the 28-70 F2 L would be a really good travel camera. One thing you forgot to mention is the attention that the size of the lens gets from others. In a pro setting, this is fine, but when travelling to certain riskier places, that could be a big downside.

Love this video! Amen to that, if we choose to buy a pro camera it means that we want that extra quality that we can't get with smartphones. One thing though, I highly recommend the 24-105mm for travel. It's got amazing range, it's not too heavy, it's very sharp across the entire range and this lens actually renders bokeh beautifully for an F4! You just have to be a bit more strategic about how you conpose your images, but once you do, you can get an impressive amount of background separation since compression is high at 105mm. You should give it a try if you have the chance!

I have the RF 28-70 f2 as well and absolutely love it. However it is so heavy and only use it for work.
I also own a variety of primes, but for travel, my go to is the RF 50 1.8 with my R6 (on a spider holster). It's small, light, and capable of taking beautiful photos. The Spider holster also keeps it comfortable for me and is always on my waist so I don't have to reach for it in my bag. I also bring my GoPro and my cellphone.

I’m a shooter and never regret bringing the gear, especially for the family stuff. I find the R5+28-70 works any situation, but if i need to be light and nimble I roll with the RP+24-105L for landscapes or a set of 16-35-50 RF primes for portraits. The 28-70 is not bulky or heavy, especially if you workout like Jared Polin and me 😂

I'm using the 28-70 with the R5 and i LOVE it (2nd camera is R5+85RF). The 28-70 is perfect lens for wedding photography: Insanely versatile, fast, super sharp and wide aperture. But honestly the 28-70 is way to big and heavy for tranvel photography. And also, as you said, I have too high demands on myself for travel photography, so it's difficult to find a good balance between "enjoying your vacation" and "spending time and affort to take great photos". So mostly i'm just using my iPhone and i'm often impressed by it's picture quality.

This is why the X100V is truly the best travel camera. Sure it only has a 23mm lens (35mm FF equivalent) but honestly it forces you to take photos at one focal length and you can throw it in a sling bag or a small pocket of your everyday bag. Plus, Fuji colors and film simulations are amazing.

  • @stuartriley4976
    @stuartriley4976 2 года назад +4

Being a Fuji user, I find the X100V to be the best travel camera. Even when I take the TCL and WCL converters, and a small flash, it's light, compact, and takes great photos.
But if I take my XT-4, I'll take the 16-55mm f2.8, which is "equivalent" to the Canon 28-70mm.

Thanks for this! I’m still trying to decide if I invest in the 28-70 f2, or just get the 24-70 f2.8 at about $1000 less (Canadian dollars). A lot of people comment about the weight of this lens, but seeing another woman using it (and loving it!) is reassuring 😁

F2 is a full stop of light more than f2.8 so that means twice as much light reaches the sensor which is key if you have to shoot in low light like food or people in a dark restaurant.

Yes! I took the 28-70 to Yosemite and loved it! I shot everything handled. I also brought along the 70-200 and rarely used it. But, I disagree with the smaller travel camera is not needed idea. I took an European trip with my wife this June and I did not want to bring the R5. I took my M10 and 35 and 50 prime which fit in a small shoulder non camera bag. The R5 plus 28-70 will take up half a bistro table in Paris. I was able to print my wife a 16x16 photo book, and iphone would not be up to the task.

The 24-240 is the bomb. That's my normal walking around lens. I will also travel with a Sigma 60-600 (with an adaptor) if I'm going somewhere where I might spend a morning shooting birds. I just spent four months in Italy, and the 24-240 was great for almost any shot, sunsets, cityscapes, inside churches, paintings inside museums, ect.

  • @onlysublime
    @onlysublime Год назад +1

Thank you! People are often picking the travel based on how small and compact it is. But I pick based on versatility and convenience. So there's one question I would ask someone: when you're walking around on a trip, do you have a backpack or messenger bag or do you walk with nothing? I noticed that as people get older they carry less. If I was at the point where I carried nothing I would not take this camera. I always brought prime lenses because on travel trips you have little control over lighting and are often in very dark situations. So I often brought my 16, 24, 35, and 85 lenses. If it was up to me, I would just bring the 35/85 combo and be done. But there would be times when they want the entire table of 10+ people in the shot. Or they want the entire building facade in the frame. So I was constantly switching lens even on the go. I ended up leaving uncapped lens (both from and rear) to speed up the swap which is another point of terror that I had to adapt to. But with the 28-70 I left all those lenses at home. Individually the 28-70 is a massive lens but it's much easier to pack than a 16+24+35+85. So now I bring the 16 and 28-70 and I'm done. The 28-70 will produce better images than any other travel lens. A lot of people don't realize that f2 is a full stop of light greater than f2.8 which is the reason I would never use the 24-70 f2.8 lenses that other cameras use. And for a lot of places I'll never be there ever again so I would rather preserve the images from my canon r5 than my smartphone. Even if it's a travel photoshoot, I feel comfortable taking only the 28-70 where previously I would have anxiety not having all my primes.

just went through the exact same though process in deciding my next lens set-up. on my last trip to tokyo, I brought my 5DIV with 35/L and 85L, as i like my travel portraits and like composing pictures through isolating details in a subject. but the combined weight of this three just wore me down. Also in street, having to change lenses will cause you to miss the shot, like how i missed a shot of a geisha walking down the street.
after the trip i was bent on resetting my setup, and i came across the 28-70. The idea of a fast zoom that can replace two primes seduced me big time. plus the total weight of a single 28-70 with an R5 is far manageable than multiple primes. got the 28-70 enroute and can't wait!

I love how your videos cover everything we think about! Thanks! I’ve thought about this a lot and have a little travel experience. On a recent trip, I took my older Canon G11 and dSLR. While the compact G11 was okay for some shots (similar to having an iPhone), I lost a few shots due to slow reset and was quickly glad I took the dSLR I was so familiar with. Keeping it in a compact Lowepro Toploader with no vertical grip, I was relieved of any anxiety and so happy I took it. Since our vacation presented nice views much like your Jackson Hole trip, I wanted to keep the background in clear view (did not want to blur it), so a slow lens was perfect and I was less worried about the lens. I find fast lenses ideal when I’m shooting in locations with distracting backgrounds so I can blur them. So I’m curious, did you take a lot of shots with your 28-70 at wide open aperture with that beautiful background? I agree on the iPhone at Disney. So my thought is take the nice camera body, but take a less expensive lens suitable for the area (or take a cheap prime and Kit zoom like the 24-105 f4). Like you, I try to keep myself in check about spending more time with my wife enjoying the vaca and moderate my time behind the lens.

I bring this lens with a r3 everywhere. The problem is that some places won't allow it like how you mentioned. Like sports stadiums, concert or other indoor events. I also waste a lot of time doing these search since it's hard to find the policy for each event. Unfortunately, indoor events are extremely dark to use cellphones for photos. Like a monster trucks event. I ended up shooting a video on a cellphone instead, to lower the iso due to the lower shutter of 1/50. Haha.

Hi Katelyn, I got over the anxiety after going on a European trip in 2000 where I started solo, and my wife joined me for a group tour in the Swiss Alps. Carried 2 film bodies and 4 lenses but on 56-year-old legs. Later on, I carried Canon EOS APSC sensor camera and one or two lenses. More recently I reverted to an approximation of my HS Newspaper rig, with an EOS 77D, and a 24mm f2.8 pancake. Zoom with my feet and 26MP's allow some room to crop. Since I never had the orgasmic result (Outside of workshops when I borrowed a 200mm f2.0) of a seriously wide-open quality lens, I settle for what I can do with what I have--and learned to use 65+ years ago. I am still trying to cope on 78-year-old legs.
Conclusion, using my iPhone is such an insulting photo experience, similar to the disposal cameras of old, that unless it is an emergency incident to document, I refuse to use the lame pre-school sliders to take anything more than a snap, snap, snap----er, yeah shot. And I even have 3 camera apps.
Love your content, your work and consistent positive, insightful attitude!
    C
Maybe I'll take a photo walk with my grandson and learn to use the iPhone. Looking back, I've proven I can do quality work with "seriously wanting" equipment. I bet there is a way to conquer the iPhone, too.

Some great points here. I take my “big” camera everywhere every time because that’s just who I am. Most of the time for me I wouldn’t enjoy a vacation without my camera. The reason I take the 24-105 instead of the 28-70 has nothing to do with weight and more to do with the extra 4mm at the wide end. I just find 28 isn’t wide enough for “everything” where 24 almost is. I also like the extra reach on the long end.

I went to Paris in April to fulfill my 33-year longtime dream trip and took my R6 and rented both a RF 24-70 f2.8 and a RF 15-35 f2.8. I never took the 24-70 off the camera. I wish I had taken the 15-35mm to the Louvre and Versailles because indoor shots aren’t as great with the longer focal length lens, even at 24mm. I have distortion on the artwork shots of the grand format paintings and also had to step further back to get the shots which made it so I had people in the photos a lot of the time. If I had the 15-35 on the R6 in those instances, I would have fared much better. I think it’s important to know what you are really wanting to photograph. If I had been outdoors I would have been fine with the 24-70 focal length range. The 28-70 would have been a tad too tight for my indoor museum shots, but would have worked okay. Thanks for the video and thoughts, Katelyn. I used both my R6 AND my iPhone 12 Pro. The R6 took MUCH better photos, especially in the darker rooms and outdoors at night. I will always be taking my pro camera on my trips where I want to capture artwork-worthy photos. It’s worth it to me.

When I hold my Canon cameras it just feels like "work", but my Fuji cameras are for me; specifically weekends with the family, day trips or any other kind of trips. It just seems too much to bring my R5 with a 28-70.

great video. I must say with my Samsung phone, the ai processing of landscape photos is much better than my landscape photos with hours of editing in lightroom and photoshop . It's probably a me thing but my frined went to some canyon recently and his wife's straight out of iphone photos were much better than his wide angle full frame camera photos. With that said, with portraits, definently a mirrorless or ff sensor makes a huge difference. I'd say a good middle ground is the new 24/1,8 lens and then using the 1 button crop shortcut so it acts as 2 lens. that's a nice and light combo for travel and it has the background separation of about f1.8. so many things to consider when travelling. i wish i could take my r6+85/1.2 everywhere, but it's pretty big package, even a 50/1.8 with crop mode combo might be a great idea too. 24/1.8 and a 50/1.8 + r6 and using the crop modes to double up the lens (kinda) would be my thing for my next trip, oh that's next week

I △⃒⃘lwayϟ take my camera to our camping trips in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. I used to only have a 50mm so that’s what I took and as I was learning photography more and more it was just great to practice in a different location than I’m used to shooting in.
So for the portraits of just you and Michael, did you have friends handle your camera? How did you manage taking those? I know you said for group shots you had strangers but you can’t always count on strangers getting awesome shots and the Jenny Lake portraits are definitely curious! Hi Katelyn, I watch your videos just because I simply think you are honest with the information you share. This being said, I want to ask you: I own an R6 and I love it, even though I've been very tempted to get the R5 just because I'm into bird photography also and higher res images are crucial for cropping. But aside from that, I want your opinion so I can make a decision in regard of the RF 28-70 lens. I don't have the steadiest hand when it comes to hand held shots and just want to know if the IBIS of the R6 is good enough to rely on given that this lens has no IS (all my lenses have IS, so). Your answer will help me decide if I get the RF 28-70 or the RF 24-70, which, as you know, does have the IS feature, but the sharpness of the RF 28-70, according to the reviews I've seen, is unmatchable....prime like.
    Thank you in advance, Katelyn
