Most youtube reviewers say the R6 using the 1dx sensor is better than the 5dIv 30mp output with a good lens because the AF and IBIS gives you very sharp in focus and stabilized exposures. Ken Rockwell observed vs. the R5 45mp there is only a 30% linear difference in visible Megapixels, and Mr. Rockwell says you can't see the difference vs. 24 and 30 mp.
I only got mine this week, but so far the first two shoots I have done have felt like a bit of a struggle. The eye focus worked some times, but often it would randomly focus on other parts of the frame and have trouble finding focus again. Either that or it just didn’t seem to be able to find the faces. I decided after this second shoot that the touch and drag focus may be a part of the problem as I’m left eye dominant so it seems possible that my nose was hitting the lcd and making the camera think I wanted it to focus elsewhere. The first session was the same day that I got the camera, so I don’t doubt that I just may not have dialed in settings too well, and my second session had a lot of back lighting from the sun and a teenager who had transitions lenses that may have made the eye focus an extra challenge. Have you had any trouble with the camera just not finding eyes/faces in certain situations?
@Connor Hibbs Make sure AF operation is set to servo. AF method must be face+tracking, zone af, or large zone Af. Subject to detect set to people or animals as appropriate. Eye detection set to enable. I configure the joystick to control moving AF points but touch and drag also works. In either case set initial AF POINT for tracking on purple screen 5 to use manually selected point in tracking mode. I press the joystick in to centre the start point. You can use touch and drag to achieve the same. If you find your cheek is enabling moving focus points try using a different part of the screen for touch and drag and experiment with absolute and relative. I find that unless the subject is close and large in the frame eye detection can be hit and miss. Download the advanced manual from the Canon support site. It explains most of the many factors that influence effective eye detection. The R6 is my first mirrorless camera and it took me a few days to adjust, just persevere and you'll get there. Good luck.
No - I haven't had the issues you've experienced. Sounds like if it isn't the touch and drag interference it could either be a lens or a dud body that you might need to return :(
Hey Mitch, i have been following you since you appeared in one of the Hayden's photo battles and i love the color grading and unique style of editing you do with your videos and photos. i am a user of canon camera too the canon 77d. but i am really confused in between R6 and Sony a7iv right now.. as my most of the work is making content for my clients in food industry. i am a bit in dilemma whether i should go out of ECO system as i love the canon and their color science... or should i just leave the ECO system and try the new sony a7Iv as the tech is new and all say that sony is better in the video.
Hey, Mitch! Thanks on this review. I am looking to upgrade 2-camera hybrid setup to use with my EF lenses. I shoot professionally 70% video 30% photo, and need a solid hybrid cameras to last me next 3-5 years. Narrowed it down to 3 cameras: R5, R6 and X-T4 (with Fringer adapter). My main question is would you recommend R6 to use as a main video camera if I am not shooting long 4k clips over X-T4? Ive heard many negatives on R6, like too warm white balance, bad video AF, etc, in Potato Jet video. For me it is important to be reliable enough for run and videography and that it's easy to cut between other Canon cameras on shoots without having to adjust colors later. What do you think could you recommend it for that?
No hate on Potato Jet but I just couldn't understand his evaluation of the camera.. I actually experience quite the opposite to him. This 'warm white balance' thing is a non-issue.. I have no idea why people are saying this... Theres nothing else I can recommend other than if you need multiple bodies just fork out the cash to buy the same model - you're otherwise never going to be able to 'colour match' them all - trust me I've tried many times in my career to do this - at one point I owned three 5D mark III's and it was heaven! haha. I wouldn't trust the af tracking with the fringer adapter so my recommendation is to go for 2x R6 bodies. If you're worried about what these other youtubers are saying just go rent the R6 for a few days and see how you feel about it.
In video mode with the Canon R6, what happens when the focus is on a moving subject, and then a second subject enters the frame in front of the first subject? On which of the two subjects will the camera focus? For such situations, is it possible to tell the camera to keep focus on the original subject or to automatically transfer focus to the second subject ?
Great review Mitch! Just subscribed! How do you feel about programs like gigapixel with this camera to infuse more resolution when needed for cropping or large prints? Thanks again for the content and take care! Rick in Phoenix Az 😀
Don't forget that the EOS R can also shoot 4.2.2. 10-bit, albeit externally to a Ninja V... but I know it's extra gear/expense and if the camera can do it in-body, why the heck not! Lol. But just wanted to point that out.
I'm glad you came to that positive conclusion.. really interested in purchasing this camera soon! Thanks again!! Very informative with back up proof.. 🙌🏽💜
@@kikezurek34 what brand 35mm do you have? Heard him mention in a previous video the Tamron wasn't supported. Not sure if I misheard and he just meant for video. 🤔
You nailed it, Mitch! The R6 truly does "get out of your way." The IBIS and Dual-Pixel AF ii are superb. Losing 10 MP from the R is not as much of a concern as I feared. Shooting portraits is that much more enjoyable. My "miss rate" has decreased significantly. I am stoked to see you feature the R6 with lenses that are NOT in the RF lineup. I am getting fantastic AF performance and image quality from my Canon EF-L, Sigma-Art, and Tamron SP/G2 lenses. What are your thoughts about the Sigma 24 f/1.4 on the R6?
Thanks Allen, the 24mm works like magic on the R6. I am excited for third party companies to work on RF mount lenses but for now happy to adapt what I already have.
Loved the video and actually it helped me decision to buy the R6. I am having issues with the colors when imported into lightroom. Do you have any advice to bring the dead colors back to life? Is there a color profile you use or do you have custom settings on your camera you can share? Thanks again!
@@megan-bo you're talking about RAW right? If you want colorful pictures straight out of camera use one of the jpg modes + RAW if you're interested in editing later.
Mitch, what is the biggest win with the R6 vs. your 5d III with magic lantern? I am trying to make the choice between the 5d, r6 and x-t3/4, raw sounds amazing (I mostly shoot 1080p), but image stabilization is awesome to have as well. They are all amazing photo cameras I am sure.
Very good review. I‘m new to use professional camera. I'm using R6 as well. But I met some issues on this new camera. 1. When I shooting during the night, it seems that use low shutter speed and low iso will create more noise when use higher iso and higher shutter speed. Especially when I check RAW images in lightroom. But when I output jpg file the noise will be reduced automatically. So does shutter speed increase noise and transfer raw to jpg will reduce? 2. It seems that too sensitive autofocus sometimes makes my video focus not stable as it always try to focus on new objectives when . I don't know if it is due to my focus setting or a common issue. My lens is RF 24-70 f/2.8. Thanks!
Ef, rf doesn’t matter - its more down to each individual lens itself - some are better than others for example my tamron 35mm 1.4 SP (adapted) is super fast and reliable.
Not yet - I have done this in the past though with clients who are okay with the work going on youtube - if you check out some of the wedding films I’ve done with the xt3 as an example. R6 job bts might be coming soon!
It will continually focus while you compose your shot - rather than focusing once (one shot). If your camera or model moves between focus acquisition and shutter actuation you can have an out of focus shot (sometimes happens for moving subjects especially).
Hello big fan, I have a question, I shoot with me eos r with 35rf lens and find that when after editing the hair on my subjects looks very fine almost grainy, but only when uploading to social media. What can I do?
My suggestion would be to downsize your photo to native resolution for instagram which is 1080x1350 for 4:5 photos. If you upload a file larger than that instagram does its own downsizing to fit. Try this and see if it works!
hello mitch. I follow you on both RUclips and Instagram. your photos are amazing. let me ask you something. Even the photos that are not edited in camera are beautifully toned. How did you determine that tone? Can you tell us or can you make a video about it? I'm looking forward to your answer about your machine settings and editing skills.
Hi Mitch, could you please tell me about R6 video stabilisation problems in Corners (trembling or image )? Are there any way to deal with that? Does it relevant only to specific let’s or to specific setup or you will get this effect anyway with R6?
What's your opinion on using the Atomos Ninja V with R6? It gets rid of the recordlimit and the overheating and also gives you the options of better codecs. This should make the R6 way more usable as a video camera. People told me to get the Sony A7S III but I really hate Sony's usability. Btw. what camera and lens did you use for this video? It looks so smooth and relaxed.
If you’re adding a massive monitor to it why not just get a blackmagic pocket 6k? At some point its still going to be a stills camera vs a dedicated video camera and the video camera is always going to win.
@@MitchLally Since I love photography and videography I want to use the camera for both. Being an enthusiast, I can't afford two seperate cameras. Since I record myself, I need autofocus, which the BlackMagic doesn't have, although I love their video quality. I am in a weird space of wanting better video quality (shooting with a Canon M50 atm) but also not being professional enough for a pure video camera...
@@ElBoyoElectronico I would argue that the h265 codec is actually a great codec to aquire in. It’s not a quick editing solution like pro-res in the ninja V but it looks fucking fantastic. I honestly don’t touch external recorders - I think they’re way overhyped. You probably think you need 10 bit 4:2:2 but in reality you definitely don’t. My guess is you probably show your videos on the internet mainly - which doesn’t even display 10 bit or 4:2:2. The idea that these codecs have ‘higher quality’ is only in a technical sense not a practical sense - put the two videos side by side and I doubt anyone (even a professional) will tell the difference. I would go with the R6 - best in class autofocus and great colours sooc.
Been seeing very mixed opinions on the r6 colors being flatter than traditional canon colors which is the only thing keeping me from purchasing the r6. Would you say the colors are just as rich as other canon bodies?
What are ‘traditional canon colours’? I’ve never heard of this before. Every sensor is different and has a slightly different colour profile - having said that I can see absolutely no difference between the R, R6, R5, 5D4 etc practically. Maybe if you put them side by side and studied them carefully you would see a difference but if that’s your issue with the camera I would argue you’re probably looking at photography from too much of a clinical standpoint. You can do a lot with raw data too unless you’re shooting jpg.
@@MitchLally maybe I didn’t phrase that right but the photos that come from canon definitely seem to have a certain look which I’ve always liked. Look forward to getting my hands on an r6!
One thing I’ve really missed since the 5DIV were the sRaw and mRaw modes. Those were excellent options to have for many situations. I wish the R5 had those instead of cRaw. The 5DIV had great shadow recovery IMHO! Much better than the EOS R which had bad shadow pattern noise. In your experience is the R6 better than the R for pattern noise?
cRAW is awesome! But yeah would be cool to have medium and small raw too. I dunno if I agree about the shadow recovery - I owned both and the 5DIV and R have the same sensor!? In my opinion the R6 beats the R in shadow recovery - will do a test soon to confirm / eat my hat.
@@MitchLally yeah I always shook my head when people just lazily said “the R and 5D IV have the same sensor therefore have the same IQ”. That was not the case at all in my experience. Tony and Chelsea Northrup did a comparison that mimicked the results I got: the R had more noise and colour shifts at high ISOs and pattern noise and colour shifts in the shadows when exposures were pulled up; the 5D never had any of that. Sensors may have been similar but the electronics used were very different (much cheaper on the R). I shot thousands of images with both and had to sell the R because the images were too fragile for my uses. The R5 seems to have fixed all that.
Going to get the R6 as an upgrade for my 5Dmk3. My 135mm 2.0 is waiting to get an ibis upgrade :D Thanks for the video, helped me a lot thinking over my decision.

Good luck.
The first thing I turned off when i got my R6 was the LCD touchscreen, I have a big nose. My AF eye detect has been faultless so far.
No - I haven't had the issues you've experienced. Sounds like if it isn't the touch and drag interference it could either be a lens or a dud body that you might need to return :(
@ david lee Thanks for helping out bro
Hey Mitch, i have been following you since you appeared in one of the Hayden's photo battles and i love the color grading and unique style of editing you do with your videos and photos. i am a user of canon camera too the canon 77d. but i am really confused in between R6 and Sony a7iv right now.. as my most of the work is making content for my clients in food industry. i am a bit in dilemma whether i should go out of ECO system as i love the canon and their color science... or should i just leave the ECO system and try the new sony a7Iv as the tech is new and all say that sony is better in the video.
Another awesome video! I really liked this one and the videos you do with the x-t4. Keep this content coming....I love it.
Ps catmeldrum is super ! 🤩
Yes it is watch my r6 video settings video for more info!
Hi, love the video thanks for a great review, as regard to the battery's, is the LP-E6 compatible in the R6, thanks Lenny.
Great review Mitch! Just subscribed! How do you feel about programs like gigapixel with this camera to infuse more resolution when needed for cropping or large prints? Thanks again for the content and take care! Rick in Phoenix Az 😀
What is the lens used at 14:29? Looks like a Canon RF-L
Don't forget that the EOS R can also shoot 4.2.2. 10-bit, albeit externally to a Ninja V... but I know it's extra gear/expense and if the camera can do it in-body, why the heck not! Lol. But just wanted to point that out.
Incredible video man! We love shooting on our R6 😍
anyone else notice how cool his eyes are??? fr dude your eyes are so nice
Bro did u use sigma and tamron lenses for the r6 picture u took?
Great review mate! Glad you’ve found your ideal body and nice to see the XT4 guest appearing in this review 😃
Thanks Chad!
So what does Mitch primarily shoot on? Is he on Canon or Fuji? R6 or something else?
R6 is currently my primary camera
What are your thoughts on the R6 vs the A7iii? I’ve been torn for a while on which to get. I don’t do video. Only photography for social media.
I feel like either is a good choice - personally I like the Canon.
I'm glad you came to that positive conclusion.. really interested in purchasing this camera soon! Thanks again!! Very informative with back up proof.. 🙌🏽💜
Omg highly recommend it. Even thought I only have the rf 35 mm lens, but the pictures come out amazing
@@kikezurek34 what brand 35mm do you have? Heard him mention in a previous video the Tamron wasn't supported. Not sure if I misheard and he just meant for video. 🤔
@@JessikaJay16 the canon rf 35mm 1.8
Hope you enjoy it!
@@kikezurek34 the R6 + the 35mm F/1.8 is my go to set up for portraits!
Hey mate, two years on, can you share what some of your thoughts are now?
great content, man! keep going!
Great video thanks I am now going to buy one to add to my kit.
its nice tone,
what cc you are kept inthis photoshoot, can you show us
You nailed it, Mitch!
What other sigma-art lens have u adapted on your R6?
@@JackyLi I love the Sigma 50 f/1.4 Art on the R6.
@@Allen-Trav Is the AF working well, along with shooting 12/20fps with that?
Do you think the megapixels matter when it comes to being able to print sports banners of players for gyms or player posters?
Hi Mitch, how would the R6 work for landscape & wildlife? I wouldn't be shooting speedy animals.
I love my R6 too! :) Great video.
Loved the video and actually it helped me decision to buy the R6. I am having issues with the colors when imported into lightroom. Do you have any advice to bring the dead colors back to life? Is there a color profile you use or do you have custom settings on your camera you can share? Thanks again!
Nope. The colours look fine to me. Having you calibrated your computer monitor?
@@MitchLally I have! So the colors you see when youre shooting are true to when you open up the cr3 in lightroom?
@@megan-bo you're talking about RAW right? If you want colorful pictures straight out of camera use one of the jpg modes + RAW if you're interested in editing later.
Mitch this review is amazing thank you. can you please share r6 + 35 1.4 at 1.4 10bit 4K unedited footage with us?
The R6 in my opinion is the Holy Grail!!!! Thanks for this video !!
Hmm.. 5D III raw is a convoluted workflow - if you want raw just go for a BMPCC! If you shoot video only then go for a video camera.
@@MitchLally Video is secondary, but a 5d is still expensive, so might just get an R6 or x-t3/4 instead. Thanks for your reply
Incredible professional and well-made video! Thank you for the information!
Thanks!
Check your menu if you have high iso noise reduction turned on. This will affect the jpg but not the raw.
I was wondering if any lenses are better for video? I have a few EF lenses and hope they will work with the adapter to dabble making short videos.
Ef, rf doesn’t matter - its more down to each individual lens itself - some are better than others for example my tamron 35mm 1.4 SP (adapted) is super fast and reliable.
@@MitchLally but what about crop? R6 with EF lenses = 1,6 crop mode, isnt it?
A7c 5d mark iv r6 R which is better to go for long-term use
How does the focus on the EF lenses compare to the RF lenses? All of my gear right now are EF.
Do you have a Video actually showing you work at a Wedding Shoot, or any other Official Shoot, other than just taking Pictures of Friends?
Not yet - I have done this in the past though with clients who are okay with the work going on youtube - if you check out some of the wedding films I’ve done with the xt3 as an example. R6 job bts might be coming soon!
Great video your work is nice bro 👍🏾💯
Would you swap for the Panasonic S1 for those extra 4 megapixels and cheaper price?
What about the S5? :)
When eye tracking is on in one shot mode whats the advantage with AI servo mode?
It will continually focus while you compose your shot - rather than focusing once (one shot). If your camera or model moves between focus acquisition and shutter actuation you can have an out of focus shot (sometimes happens for moving subjects especially).
Man, it's so many great cameras to choose but this video helps.
How is the delay? I shoot fast sports but I’m scared there’s a delay on the view finder
It's actually super quick. I would but it up there with having as quick of a blackout time as any dslr camera.
Gonna buy this For sure
Hello big fan,
I have a question, I shoot with me eos r with 35rf lens and find that when after editing the hair on my subjects looks very fine almost grainy, but only when uploading to social media. What can I do?
My suggestion would be to downsize your photo to native resolution for instagram which is 1080x1350 for 4:5 photos. If you upload a file larger than that instagram does its own downsizing to fit. Try this and see if it works!
@@MitchLally thank you Mitch most people don’t reply I appreciate the love for your fans !
Really good vid Mitch! Might buy the eos R6 as an upgrade so I can use my eos R as a b-cam. Very informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
hello mitch.
@@MitchLally Interesting... I will think about that
Still waiting for mine in store. Pre-ordered 3 weeks ago! 😐
Hope you love it!
Hit the nail on the head Mitch.
Do you find switching from video to photo and back reasonably fast.
Plus do you have to adjust the files much in post colour wise.
I love my R6, RF 15-35
I'm also thinking of the 15 35 rf for an every day package but man that lens is $$$
@@RWAquariumPages it’s a bit pricey, but worth every penny.
@@FPavcovich good thing no vacation for a while. Let me save up for it
Great wrap up mate! Glad you're loving it. Overheating is a shame as the image is really nice for video :( C70 looking very enticing now haha
C70 looks like a goer!!
Which lens are you using for portrait @mitch lally? 35 or 85mm? RF versions?
can you still use the tamron 35 1.4 on R6 still? Or should I get the sigma 35 1.4 for now till they fix the issue? Thoughts?
Dam the pics look fire. I just can’t wait to get my rf 28-70 lens
Oooof 28-70 - you will enjoy that!!
Still have doubts between the 5 our 6. 45MP looks awesome, but a 1700 a 1800 euro price difference is a lot 🙈
Hi the raw R6 link is not working! Is it still avaialble somewhere? thanks
Does it have the AA FIlter? In some websites they say it does and in many others they say it doesn't.
when you were shooting video, did you notice any freezing up?
Nope!
How does this compare vs the XT4 ? Im not sure witch camera to get the R6 or the XT4
Going to get the R6 as an upgrade for my 5Dmk3.

EOS R6 looks like a winner.
such a great video!
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed.
Would 20 megapixels be bad for instagram posts? Since we crop to 4:5 ?
I dunno, i feel my EOS R feels more professionally built than my r6. Mayeb thats just me, but when i sit them side by side the EOS R looks and feels more premium than that R6.
