I started my photography journey with a Canon Rebel SL1 and I gifted myself with the R6 right when it was released!! I freaking love it!! I never felt there was a learning curve. It has given me a renewed excitement about photography! And with your educational videos, I'm on top of the world! I do enjoy peanut butter with vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips! Thank you so much for all that you do!! ❤

Thanks for the great review. I got the R6 and I am really enjoying it. The high speed and tracking for kids is just in another level. I was as many people concerned by the 20MP, but I am not really missing having more.

    Spot on girl!
Once again you've pointed out all the important things. Understanding what's relevant will help your viewers. For my work it was the reliability of the R5 AF you've mentioned, since the most time consuming part of my editing has always been, checking focus. On a regular shoot day, I shoot between 5000-6000 frames. After selecting, there are still 2500-3000 frames left. which I have to check for focus (keeps me up all night).
I just finished a weeks shoot for a mail order company with the R5. After checking focus for the first 4 days and not finding any out of focus frames, I felt confident enough to skip checking focus. That's a first and makes a huge difference in sleeping time!!!
Keep doing this. You're a great guide!
    Matthaeus

Thanks a million for the practical review! I rented an R6 last month to shoot a festival along side my trusty 6D. You were absolutely right - the ergonomics are spot on, and muscle memory made it entirely painless to swap back and forth between cameras. In fact, I loved the R6 so much that I picked one up last week. Also, peanut butter on fresh celery. 😊

I went from a 10 year old DSLR to the R5, and the learning curve to mirrorless was minimal. It was more learning a new camera, where all of the buttons & their functionality are. Plus learning the new menus, plus the menu system for video.

As a 1DxII owner the really difference with the 1DXIII and R6 is totally Durability and weather related. You can drop the 1DXIII and it will still work. The R6 you might break the IBIS.
The 1D series camera was designed for photographers who were going to be using the camera in rough conditions and who would be shooting a high frame rate. Not so much Frame Speed as frame rate. The first year with my 1DxII I should over 100 thousand images. I have had that camera since it came out and have never had the shutter replaced. It will be interesting to see what the life of the R series camera will be when it come to durability. All great gear from canon and all tools that can do what ever you throw at it. I can say this my R camera (that isn't sealed) has worked flawlessly in foul weather. I'm sure that these new bodies and all the new bodies to come will be great tools.

Having used the 1DX III professionally and owning the R6 the difference in IQ is non existent. Yes it’s not built like a tank but if you think it cannot take knocks then think again. The AF and IBIS are in another league to the 1DX III making getting keepers much much easier and predictable.

I shot an event today with my R6. Used the Tamron 35-150 f2.8-4 and a Westcott FJ80 on camera. I set my aperature to F4 so that as I was zooming in and out my f-stop would not change. I also shot M Auto ISO. The event was in a very dark room with a lot of dark wood so I was worried about high ISO and noise. The R6 killed it! A lot of my shots were taken at 6400 ISO and had very little noise. Definitely boosted my confidence in this camera. I normally shoot wildlife and landscapes. The R6 was my upgrade from the 7DMII. The auto focus, eye tracking, burst rate...excellent! FYI, my backup camera is a 1DX. It's in a drawer collecting dust. :)

Thanks for a comprehensive and very "real life" approach review. Totally like the way you present the camera. I came from the 5D4, naturally my perception with the megapixel driven me to choose R5 for it's higher resolution. Like you, I do missed the optical view finder when shooting with flash. Rolling shutter, banding and battery power consumption are some other areas I need to think of when shooting with R5. Oh, by the way, If I am not mistaken, at 36:18 and 39:27, "Exposure Simulation" should be the correct term rather than "Exposure Compensation. Once again, thank you so much Vanessa. Your work is amazing!

The fact that you shot a paid professional wedding with the R6 is more than enough to silence issues one may have about lesser megapixels than the original R. The difference with R5 would definitely be noticeable and More MP is always great but the benefits of the R6 having two affordable card formats over the R5 and the lower file size will greatly reduce overall cost and workflow time. Add to that the EOS R being quite inferior in features and more importantly ergonomic and buttons, the R6 does make a better case for itself. The only major issue I see as a crop shooter is the fact that adapting my crop glass even to the R5 might not yield the best resolution let alone on the R6. But that's something for you all to keep in mind

My main use for this would be for birds and wildlife; using the Canon 100-400L ii + a canon 1.4 teleconverter. I am quite sure that 20MP would be good enough, as we have all survived for so long with the 7D Mkii and even lower MP models. Looking forward to shooting with my new toy. :) Thanks Vanessa for a fantastic session.

You're absolutely right about focus, it's so easy it feels like I'm cheating!
I loved the AutoFocus improvement from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R, but the EOS R5/R6 is another very noticeable step forward.
Also using the ProGrade cards in my R5. They're great cards.
I have the "Exposure Simulation" mapped to my "Favorites" menu so I can quickly turn it off if I'm using strobes.
The only reason I didn't get the R6 was the lack of a top LCD display. I actually use that quite a bit, especially shooting with two bodies, so I had to go with two R5 bodies instead.
Stuck around to the end and I have to say that I love peanut butter and honey sandwiches, tastes almost like caramel.

@@VanessaJoy well I have studied the specs again (and some other reviews) technically there are no great differences unless you are taking videos... since I am more on photography than videography the R6 does for me pretty much the same job as the R5 - then for me the only criteria I have to get my head around is the difference on Megapixel - and as you said as long someone is not doing huge banners six-foot-high (which is not my case), my present DLSR has 20ish, and that is fine - I am actually getting more my head around the R6 and maybe invest the savings in glass :-)

You are right the focusing system is the same, they have the same amount of phase detection, but they use the normal pixel for the AI-People/Animal detecting and the eye detection. The R5 has more pixels, the R6 has more contrast in the less but larger more sensitive pixels. You have to say where the difference might be, I assume in lowlight, the bit higher contrast of the R6 may be better, but not so much that it actually is feelable. But what would you say about the lenses? They dwarfed the camera and the lenses are growing (28-70f2 or 85f1.2 are larger than before on a smaller camera). The R6 has a better contrast/line resolution than the 26 MP predecessors however the R has a bit more but not so much as the 30MP would expect you to have. I found the adapter working perfectly, but the handling is not perfect as a lens like the 24-70Lf2.8 is front heavy and the camera is small to keep up with the weight distribution here (but the pictures are great and autofocus is better than with ever STM RF lens.) I used it with a current Godox flash and the pictures are perfectly lightened (distribution, shadows smooth, color natural and on the point)

It may not be important, but the R6 photos, at 20 MP vs 45MP will require less storage and processing power on your computer when compared to the R5. If the resolution isn't that critical to a person's work, then this could be a factor in your decision criteria.

The R6 is an amazing all around camera. Due to the pixel wars, so many are convinced they need more, more, more in pixel count. Has everyone forgot how many magazine covers where shot with the Canon 5D Classic? A mere 10 mpxl camera...or what about the rave reviews of the 40D....How many wildlife publications published images from that camera. Now, if we don't have 45 Mpxl, we're toast, cause if it is cropped, then we'll only have 14 left....I have 2 prints on my walls...both are literally 3 foot x 4 foot...taken with.................a 7 megapixel camera...go figure.

Thanks for the review Vanessa! I have an R and just bought the R6 based in part on your video. Not sure which one is going to be primary and backup. Hope IBIS is silent, because the sound of lens stabilization, which seems to run almost constantly in the R, upsets the critters I photograph. Hope R6 lets me turn on silent IBIS and silent shutter while shutting off whine-y lens stabilization. My favorite feature of R is manual focus guide, and whoever at Canon created it deserves a hug. ...By the way, I like to put peanut butter on doggy treats...what dog doesn't love peanut butter frosted cookies? :).

Peanut butter on graham crackers....or a dark chocolate candy bar.
I rented an R6 for the weekend. I really enjoyed it. Mainly wanted the high frame rates for my daughter's sports. I have a 5D3 that I've had forever and really like. 23mp vs 20 didn't yield much of a difference, but dang that AF system is light years ahead on the R6.
Since I can't afford the really big glass for soccer, the only thing in the back of my head is whether the higher MP count of the R5 would be better? More cropping possible. The cost is so high though, not just the body but the CFEx cards too.

    • @brucewarren9563
      @brucewarren9563 3 года назад +1

You do not have to use the CF Express unless you want to make use of the dual card slots. An alternative to using dual cards is to use the WiFi to your mobile phone.

The 1DX III has an optical low pass filter. The R6 according to Canon has a non-optical low pass filter that is built into the sensor. I assume that means a digital filter, but they didn’t make in clear on their website.

    • @set3777
      @set3777 2 года назад

The R6 has an optical low pass filter TOO.
The R6 has the same sensor and the same DIGIC-X processor as the 1DX III.
Since it is not feasible to have IBIS in DSLRs, only R6 has IBIS and 1DX III has not.

Hi Vanessa, I have just bought the R6 without watching your review first, and after seeing your review it just gave me peace of mind that I chose the right camera for me. The R5 would be nice also but I couldn’t justify the higher price point since I’m not a professional photographer just someone that enjoys photography in general and wanted a good camera. I have always owned Canon so wasn’t going to jump ship to Sony or Nikon either. Thanks for the great review.

How do You feel dynamic range of R5? I have made some test with r5, 5d4 and A73 by underexposing by -3ev and then getting +4ev In the lightroom. All photos made on ISO200 with f4. I noticed that the best image I get with A73. The r5 had some little color issues. Some magenta on photos. On 5d4 i saw magenta and banding.

The Sony sensors are still higher. But the R5 is excellent. To miss exposure by so many stops would be considered an extreme miscalculation.

That's a very negative start to a positive post. I really enjoyed your vid. I feel like it could have been me talking. Well I'm 62 and male and ........ But seriously as a free lance photographer that shoots everything from, interiors through, portraits to events plus the odd wedding I totally get your lack of getting hung up about tec. It's what comes out that matters and you have given a very useful and honest insight into the R6. As I have always had champagne tastes and beer bottle pockets the R6 is more within my reach than the R5, especially in Covid times. After listening to you though I feel confident to make the next upgrade the R6 and know that it will meet my needs. Even if I FEEL I would like the R5 ;)
