Hi Katelyn, you must try a setting for your focusing which I believe is superior and quicker. Like you I came form a 5DIV and have an R5 but the focusing system is identical to the R6. Step one, switch to servo. Use face/eye detection and tracking for your focusing setting. Select focus priory to tracking so you get a focus square appear in the viewfinder. So what’s the difference? You are going to “Track” and recompose instead. Simply pick your face or subject to track by placing the focus square over the subject and where ever they go in the frame the focus is locked on them as it is tracking all the time whether they come closer or move away. Game changer at f1.2. This is particularly helpful when there are multiple faces in the scene too and you want it to stick on one person only and not jump around. It is so much quicker than touch and drag. There is no benefit now in using One Shot anymore as tracking is so impressive. One other thing you may want to try is I shoot for some of the time at least in Auto ISO so it is essential to have quick access to the exposure compensation. So I have this set to the control ring and it is so quick to half press the shutter and turn this to over or under expose to taste. Incidentally, I have this set to 2/3 of a stop under by default to help protect the highlights and dress detail as shadow recovery is so incredible now. Hope that was useful but give it a go.
I tried face tracking servo during processional and it wasn't able to focus on the face while it was moving so I chose one point. Alao maybe because the groom is still far away it couldnt detect or perhaps all the faces of the guests are in the frame that makes it confusing. Any tips on how to tackle moving shots with face tracking?
Yes! That touch and drag option is one of the most helpful and amazing features of the camera! I will never ever worry about my EXACT point of interest being in focus again.
Mind blown!! I just cracked my EOS R5 out of the box and I was so stressed out with how to focus this baby. Just a note to the ones who are excited about the idea of the touch and drag....if you have small hands (like myself) you'll more than likely have to use your other hand to touch and drag when looking through the camera. Thanks for the video Katelyn it really helped me out!

I'm assuming you keep your finger on the shutter button whilst doing the thumb drag? I just couldn't quite achieve that, especially when aiming for the focus areas to the left. Do you have any tips? I just got the r6 and a point about the touch/drag and focus/recomposing. I would say that touch/drag is not the reason that makes focus/recomposing become obsolete (or that it was alluded to be) . i use AF on always. that way no matter what af point, subject will be focused before you even hit the shutter button. it uses more battery but with that i rarely use bbf now too.
Touch and drag is amazing. In my experience the only few times that it gets stuck it's because my nose is touching the screen. So all I have to do is remove my nose and it works again
Oh thank God it’s not just me!! I just rented the r6 before purchasing and was geeking out over Katelyn’s discussion of the touch and drag. Well, I shoot way more vertical than horizontal and as soon as I tried this, my nose had the focus point zig zagging alllll over the screen. LMAO! Which is unfortunate because it’s not possible to select a different area of the touch screen, such as upper left or lower left or even lower right. Because that would require using left hand (already holding lens and camera) or putting your right thumb down and around your face. Boooo I’m so bummed. But I do love the camera’s sharpness! I just disabled the touch screen and it seems pretty similar in feel and function as my Mark 4.
I can't believe KJ can reach the entire screen with her right thumb. I never thought my thumbs were short until watching this video. I can't reach most of the screen with right thumb while holding the camera in my right hand. Lol at myself!!

You mentioned buying the type of battery that comes with the r6 (the LP-E6NH) rather than using the Mark 4 battery LP-E6N). Just wanted to share that, after a few hours of having my mark 4 battery in the r6, (turned completely off and stored in the bag) I went to retrieve the r6 and it was hot to the touch and had made the bag very warm. It was not near any ambient heat source and there was no other reason for it to be hot. Just FYI!! It freaked me out so I’m buying the r6 batteries as back ups! I won’t use the Mark 4 battery in the r6 again!
@@KatelynJames so basically when I put my flash on the screen went black and I couldn’t focus on anything. So for the wedding I stuck with my 5d mark iv! But I need to be ready for the next one! not sure why you change your dial to kelvin when the R6 and R5 is perfectly setup for from top to bottom shutter, iso, aperture, you could set the control ring to kelvin, i also set my back button af to spot focus and the * to eye focus which is a good option if not shooting people, ive tried drag focus but too slow
what is the correct adapter to use? I want to rent the R6 to try it out, but want to be sure I get the correct adapter for my canon lenses. There are 5 different choices and now I'm lost!
I finally got my R6! I'm wondering if you're shooting RAW or C RAW? I was doing research and some are saying they don't notice much difference in quality with the C RAW and it saves so much space. I'm curious what you're doing and why? Thanks! 💗
Hi Katelyn, Have you ever used the Drop in ND filter adaptor ? if you have can you possibly give some feed back on it ? I have really enjoyed all of your Videos regarding the R6 and will be getting one for myself because of your High rating of it :
Hi Katelyn , Thank you for the video . I have tried the touch & drag but I can not get on with it , mainly because I look through the view finder with my left eye . Can I ask if you use the single small square or the small square with the smaller square inside . Thanks
I use 2 Canon 5DIII's at weddings, at the same time, one with a 35 mm, other one with a 85 mm. It's very important to sync both cameras so if you sort the pics by date taken, it is right
@@KatelynJames I don't want to switch lenses in the church and loose time or a special moment. For the outdoor shoots or the bride getting ready, it's not so important
I am also shocked you don't like the Face recognition feature and eye detection! They really are great, but getting the hang of them is a step learning curve
Hi Katelyn, great video, planning on picking one up shortly. How do I get everyone in a group shot in focus? Is there a setting that allows the camera to automatically focus on multiple people at the same time or allow manual selection of all the faces that need focusing before taking the pic?
I know that mirrorless is the future. But most people, like me, don't have the resources to buy a $3000 camera every time Canon upgrades. The R5 and R6 will be dinosaurs in a few years, much like the Canon 20D and 30D became. We thought they were awesome when they first were out. I'm not investing in mirrorless for awhile until my 5d Markiii is no longer useable. But I do like your videos.
Also a new convert from mk4 to R6. Again trying to get the camera to feel, look as close to mk4 as possible. What have you done with Exp Sim...definitely an option that wasn't on the mk4.
Hi thanks for your amazing video, I have a question my camera was second hand so when i go to the M-Fn section it has been selected to the focus option but I don't know where I can change it, I cant seem to find it in the menu. can you help me. thank you for your time.
Brilliant video, just seen your channel for the first time, very much looking forward to getting more of an insight to the R6, I think it’s going to be a reasonably priced working pro’s camera for years and years to come!
In the first video about the R6, you mentioned that the camera seemed to change the file size while shooting. Did you find out what happened there? Is that a setting I can disable? Thanks!
Can you do a fast review again on your R6 after one month of use? Maybe there are some minuses after all? Or you are the same happy as you were in the beginning?

I love the exposure simulation outdoors, but indoors with dark lighting it’s kind of a nightmare at first. What am I doing wrong?
Katelyn the only worry I have is the 20 mp sensor. Do you find it adequate enough for printing big portraits?
We have not had any issues!
Very interesting Katelyn, thank you for this insight - please keep the vlogs coming
Thank you! Will do!
I would assume you only use the Mechanical shutter mode on the R6?
Thanks for watching!
Great video, just bought the r6 !
not sure why you change your dial to kelvin when the R6 and R5 is perfectly setup for from top to bottom shutter, iso, aperture, you could set the control ring to kelvin, i also set my back button af to spot focus and the * to eye focus which is a good option if not shooting people, ive tried drag focus but too slow
Thanks for watching!
what is the correct adapter to use? I want to rent the R6 to try it out, but want to be sure I get the correct adapter for my canon lenses. There are 5 different choices and now I'm lost!
Rf to Ef mount! It’s like $99.
I finally got my R6! I'm wondering if you're shooting RAW or C RAW? I was doing research and some are saying they don't notice much difference in quality with the C RAW and it saves so much space. I'm curious what you're doing and why? Thanks! 💗
I am shooting in RAW! I have not really tried C Raw. I wish I could be more help!

Hi Katelyn, Have you ever used the Drop in ND filter adaptor ? if you have can you possibly give some feed back on it ? I have really enjoyed all of your Videos regarding the R6 and will be getting one for myself because of your High rating of it :
I have not tried it!!
Hi Katelyn , Thank you for the video . I have tried the touch & drag but I can not get on with it , mainly because I look through the view finder with my left eye . Can I ask if you use the single small square or the small square with the smaller square inside . Thanks
Plz do a video on shutter speeds etc, this video helped me out a lot!!!!
Good video! I decided to keep the top dial for ISO and use the control ring for Kelvin.
Good choice! Thanks for sharing!!
I use 2 Canon 5DIII's at weddings, at the same time, one with a 35 mm, other one with a 85 mm. It's very important to sync both cameras so if you sort the pics by date taken, it is right
True! I only ever shoot with one camera at a time so I don't need to worry about this as much but it's definitely important!
@@KatelynJames I don't want to switch lenses in the church and loose time or a special moment. For the outdoor shoots or the bride getting ready, it's not so important
I’ve been using the touch and drag focus as well but it’s using up the battery pretty fast so I’m thinking I should switch to another method
I am also shocked you don't like the Face recognition feature and eye detection! They really are great, but getting the hang of them is a step learning curve
Haha I need to be in Control. I really should try it
Hi Katelyn, great video, planning on picking one up shortly. How do I get everyone in a group shot in focus? Is there a setting that allows the camera to automatically focus on multiple people at the same time or allow manual selection of all the faces that need focusing before taking the pic?
Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a smart plan!
Also a new convert from mk4 to R6. Again trying to get the camera to feel, look as close to mk4 as possible. What have you done with Exp Sim...definitely an option that wasn't on the mk4.
I like using it!
You’re a great communicator
Thank you!
Is there a pro or con of shooting in Kalvin?
Kevlin gives you more control!
Thank you so so much for making and sharing this!!
You are so welcome!
I set my Main Dial for Aparture, Quick Control Dial 2 for my Shutter, Quick Control Dial 1 for my Iso and Control Ring for my Kelvin
Awesome, thank you!
Hi Katelyn. First I would love to say I just love your RUclips channel I look for something new all the time! Thank you!
The adapter ring Dial adjusts kelvin. ISO dial still adjusts ISO sorry if I made that sound confusing!
Katelyn,
Nice video! Are you not using eye-tracking at all? It is so amazing. Are you giving up use of the flip out screen when using touch and drag?
Michael uses it more than I do.
Love this video!! I just got an R6 and its soooo new for me. Do you ever use the live view setting and if so, when? 😀
Yes I do! I use it some through out the day!
In the first video about the R6, you mentioned that the camera seemed to change the file size while shooting. Did you find out what happened there? Is that a setting I can disable? Thanks!
We haven't had the issue since
When you shoot weddings. Who you focused on ? Bride or Groom ? And where you focusing ?
Hello Kate, i staring my hobbies with canon r6 so could you show us all your photography setting that help us for photoshoo.
Hi ,Your video is so nice and enjoyable.👋👋👋
Thanks so much!!
Katelyn - Just watched your video. Please let me know how you feel about the R6 now.
I’m confused by the “touch and drag” is your back screen on while your looking through your evf? Doesn’t that kill your battery 10x faster?
I change batteries once on a wedding day so not too bad!
Can you do a fast review again on your R6 after one month of use? Maybe there are some minuses after all? Or you are the same happy as you were in the beginning?
Yes! I made that exact video, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/gIr52WZ94n0/видео.html
@@KatelynJames thank you! 🙏🏻
