Glad I'm not the only one! Got this lens with my R6 and I literally use it 99% of the time at weddings. It only comes off for macro shots. It makes weddings way more easier to shoot not changing lenses or carrying a bag all the time! Glad someone else finally realized this!!
I actually bought it for the increased sharpness for fashion style photos on an R5. This lens is just totally nuts on how much detail it can render… And of course the ABILITY to use wider apertures is just unthinkable!
Your allegiance to functionality versus prime lens snobbery is refreshing and welcomed. The RF 28-70 clearly demonstrates that with the right technology in the body, and the right opticals in the lens, one can do, and do well. Thanks.

This lens was so much fun to use when I borrowed it, definitely a must own for those of us who need versatility with the absolute utmost quality. It felt like using cheat codes when I had this lens, I loved it. Great video as always. Much love from Chicago ✌️
I appreciate your delivery that comes off as sincere and non-pretentious. Very refreshing. The primes are so good (EF 35mm L II/RF 50 L/RF 85L/ EF 135 L) that I'm not sure I could make the switch myself - but don't doubt the magic one bit.

I understand 100% what you are saying. I also was strictly prime user, specially 35mm 1.4 II. Then the 50 1.2 RF. Rented out the 28-70 once. Sold my 50 right away and got my the 28-70. It was sold out everywhere for awhile and managed to find one small camera store 1 hour away from me and picked it up, never looked back! Absolutely an incredible game changing lens.
I was so scared when I saw the title lol. I actually ordered it and it came today! Thanks for your great advice, I can’t wait to use it! Glad you still love it!
You give such good advice. I want this lens now. You are honest and direct and that is so valuable. We all should listen to you, you know what you are talking about. Thank you.
I just got this lens a few days ago and shot 2 events with it this weekend. It is soooooo amazing and I agree with every single point you mentioned lol. Have you ever thought of getting a battery grip for your R6 so your hand/wrist isn't sore at the end of the day? For me, the battery grip helped balance the heavy lens since it is front heavy.
I've been using a grip for years on all my cameras. I was going to ditch the grip on my new R6 because $349 for a grip is RIDICULOUS. The second I put my EF 70-200mm on my R6 yesterday I knew I was destined to put a grip on it. Yeah, it's extra weight but it's important for good balance with big lenses.

All I have to do now is convince my lovely wife....hee hee . I'll just forward your video about the 28-70m to her with a bottle of wine and fish tacos...BOOM DONE. I need this lens big time...I to love prime but shooting 50+ weddings and a ton of family shoots...I NEED THIS LENS. Thanks again guys!!!

This lens still feels like it would be a compromise for me but know I could make it work. I also teach photography and often have students with slower zooms and will show them how to isolate subjects and find more bokeh (getting closer and/or finding backdrops with distance and pleasing shapes at any f-stop) but as a working pro, don’t want to limit myself too much. I’d have a really hard time not using the new 50 RF1.2 (incredibly sharp wide open). I’d love to see a comparison between it and the 28-70 f2 at 50mm, both wide open and stopped down a bit. I have the diminishing returns argument with myself all the time but by nature am always looking for a little bit better ..even if it means a lot more work.
I’d just like to say I think kit zooms are great for new photographers as well. I can also still work with full frame kit zoom. They’re just *too* slow for me at this point on APS-C when it comes to the subject isolation options on the wide end. I like to at least have… something to work with if I need it.
Thanks for this. I shoot a lot of volleyball; very much not weddings I realize. But I currently shoot a lot with the R6 and 24-105 f4. Recently I forced myself to use a 50 and 85 at F2. Totally different images, much better looking. The R6 really struggled to nail focus that fast; volleyball is not great light and lots of subjects moving and crossing constantly. But when it does, it is CRISPY. I’m planning to upgrade to the R5 ii, for Soprts AI and Cropping, and this lense is going to be an immediate second for me I think.
@@photohiker81 For RF it could be a while, because Canon decided to not give out the RF protocol specification to 3rd party :(. So all companies have to reverse engineer it first, which will also most likely result in the first batch of lenses and firmwares be not 100% compatible and unoptimized and slow in some things like AF :(
Hi Katelyn. I got an apology email from B&H saying that my 28-70 f/2.0 was still on back order. It has been 2 months of waiting. I was going to cancel my order and switch it to the RF 50 f/1.2. But you just gave me all the reasons to wait it out a little longer to pair this lens with my R5. Thank you Katelyn! 😘
About 3 months ago I needed this lens and could not get it because everybody had it on back order. I did a search across America and bought it used. It’s paid for itself.
I finally got my 28-70 f/2.0 after waiting 3 months. The weddings I wanted shoot with the lens have gone and went. I don’t have anymore weddings booked for the rest of the year. I guess it will stay in the box till next year.
I bought a refurb of this lens through Canon about a month ago and... good gravy I love it! I was bragging on it to a fellow photographer and she just couldn’t believe that the photos I showed her were NOT taken with a prime. It’s just the best thing!!
Im here after your first warning video.. and i knew you would change your mind. You can still walk around as before, you only have so much better tool in ypur hands now. We dont need 1.4 and changing lenses, this is the holy grail walk around lens.. no primes needed with this monster.
I bought this lens for doing 4k video on my R5. Because it is an 8k sensor you can program C1 to shoot 4K in full frame with a 28-70 focal length and then program C2 to shoot in cropped sensor mode to basically double the focal length and still get 4K resolution. For run and gun situations this is great and a monopod solves the weight issue.
Just a small note, but I think you meant to say "subject isolation" instead of "compression" when referring to the benefits of primes, as compression is of course achieved by using telephoto focal lengths.
@@KatelynJames Do you keep a filter on it? I don't think I will. I generally don't do that. I think the hood offers some protection and I'm very careful.
It's not ...not whole fstop like switch f4 to f1.2 . You get more problems like vnet distort aberration maybe focus problems wider focal length wider aperture along very high prices just as focus breathing at telephoto problems. You losing at least 24 focal length unless you also have 16-35 no is f2.8 rf 15-35 or 35/24 primes.
First lens I ever bought with my R. I now have the R6 and R5 and it lives on my R5 . I have the battery grip and even though it is heavy it balances it all out so well. Highly recommend!!!
Seriously, this is the definitive review on the 28-70 F2. I 100% agree everything you mentioned! When you photograph events, travel and portraits: this lens makes your bag of primes obsolete. As opposed to the F2.8, this lens has the “look” that only primes have. I’m also around F2-F2.8 when I shot primes - because the narrow depth of field would throw couples or eyes out of focus. Have you considered the R5? Your R6 is already an amazing match but the resolution bump of the R5 is quite significant. Anyway, I’m in love with the F2 zoom as well. I think it will stay with me for many years to come, this baby is a keeper 🥰
agree.... once I got the 28-70/2, all my other Canon lenses are kind of lonely. Even 85 1.2 RF is kind of sitting on the shelf.... 28-70 just has this amazing rendering that 24-70/2.8 lenses don't.
Agree with your delight in the versatility and quality of this lens - it is permanently mounted on my main body, leaving the 10% remaining shots i shoot on my second body to my 70-200, 15-35 or specialty prime (50/85/100). depending on the assignment. This is the lens that can be counted on to be the mainstay and moneymaker in the camera bag.
To make this the ultimate wedding setup - a setting on one of the camera dials to lock the zoom into those classic prime focal lengths. *click* 35mm *click* 50mm 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Leica have these for their M mount cameras they have to click to each focal length since they work with and they need to be adjusted each time you change focal, which is done mechanically via the lens mount so the zoom lenses you find is like a 35-50-75 f4. I edited this post as the grammar just seemed terrible. I would also like to add you could use these lenses - to probably great affect on any modern day mirrorless system.
I had this lens for a few months and ended up selling it. Yes, I think it's unique and very well made. However, the bokeh/out of focus area looked messy and distracting to me (not as "creamy"). Like if the lens didn't know what it wanted to be. I'd highly suggest just going for the 24-70 instead.. and if you really want wider aperture get a prime. But obviously, if you like it you like it.
Try using a hand strap and I guarantee the cramping of your hand will go away. SO much weight is distributed to other parts of your hand and it is truly a game changer. I use the Joby hand strap that also has a quick plate for placing ona tripod, but it's awesome.
Just purchased for a gig as I’m mainly a video but do a lot of photo stuff and use manual lenses for photos but my r5c isn’t really liking these, hard to get sharp photos so I dived in and this video makes me feel confident about my purchase.
I was on the fence for a while about this camera set up, especially because so many videos showed people using it for wild life photography. Thank you so much for this video.
I am a complete amateur and mostly a travel/tourism photographer and often get left behind fiddling with 2/3 lenses while whoever I'm travelling with gets frustrated so I either have to move on or compromise with a badly framed/low res shot. I first took this lens to a late night illuminated woodland and got shots just on full auto settings out of the box that would have been impossible on any of my many other lenses. Plus I could reframe take short video clips and move on carrying one camera and one lens. Cant wait to take this to my favourite landscape locations
No doubt that the 28-70 F2 is amazing, but I think the question I have looking to get a mid tele zoom is just how much is lost or gained compared to the 24-70 2.8, Gain IS, Gain wider focal length, save money, and lose 1 stop of light? With an R5 the ISO is so good that I do not think I need it for speed, so it comes down to background separation, and in that regard a 1.2 prime still goes circles around F2.0. So I really hope to find some other comparisons where someone used both for a while to give a full neutral view of both. I think I'll ultimately end up with all 3 2.8 zooms, 100mm macro, 85mm prime, and a 100-400 for long range stuff.
I have the EF 24-70 2.8 USM II and as a 2nd shooter for weddings its by far the most versatile lens in my kit. I can’t afford the RF 28-70 f2.0 yet, but hopefully someday.
I shot with this lens at a wedding and the battery grip... a big win. No fatigue and the balance is like they were meant to be a combo from Canon. Everything about it is perfection.
Back in 1991 I bought the Canon 28-70 f2.8 to f4 lens I then upgraded in 2000 to the 28 -70 f2.8 through out, so I used this focal length for 30 years for weddings mostly on film its a great focal length and very convenient and now it's a stop faster.
Just invest this month à R5 with 70-200mm2.8, and 24-70mm2.8. I just changed my whole entire system from the Nikon F mount after having used it for years. I am sad that I didn’t know before about this lens before purchasing the 28-70mm
I shoot indoor sport so zooms are important because I have limited room to move when I'm court-side. I also need to crank my shutter to 1/1000 to freeze the motion. This lens has been a game changer for me, because my images now have half the noise of the people beside me using f2.8 zooms.
I have owned this now for 18 months and it rarely leaves my R5 for the vast majority of the wedding also. Shoot, RF15-35 on my second body and occasionally swap this out for RF70-200 f2.8. I think you need a cross body strap at least to take some of the weight while not shooting. I use a Holdfast money maker as I shoot two bodies and would thoroughly recommend this or the solo strap if you only shoot a single camera.
I absolutely love my RF 28-70mm f/2L lens. I debated between this lens and the RF 85mm f/1.2L, and the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS. So glad I got this lens! No regrets at all. Although I did just order the RF 50mm f/1.2L because it's also magical as well.
Your video made me giggle, I rented this lens and an EOS R last year and was so blown away, I have been saying THIS IS THE BEST EVENT Lens Ever Made! I have put money aside to buy one for a few months now.... I had to get the R6 first and that was a game changer!
Thank you for all your videos. I just picked up the R6. I am not a professional photographer but would call myself a prosumer. I will likely save up for the RF 28-70 but am happy with my EF lenses with the adapter. Quick question if you see this. Do you ever use battery grips? I haven't seen if you have commented on this topic but will search your past videos. I love your work, keep it up.
Amazing lens. As for weight, I have found that instead of using a battery grip to improve ergonomics with a heavy lens, it is better to get a Promedia Gear L-bracket, which has an offset "L" vertical piece that sits forward of the ports on the left side, and can be extended out a few inches so that you can completely wrap your left hand around it as a handle. The advertised purpose of this vertical piece is for portrait oriented tripod work, but I found it super ergonomic to use during a long wedding as a grip. Not only can you grip the "handle" while shooting, but you can also use it to dangle the camera at your side between shots. Rather than using your finger strength on the camera grip combined with some bicep curls as you carry it around, you can instead just wrap your fingers fully around the L plate and let your arm hang limp at your side, and let your arm bones take the weight. This makes an incredible difference in fatigue for fingers, hands, wrist etc. As a bonus it takes a Spider Pro pin on the bottom edge of that L, and the plate itself has a QD port so that you can hook it up to a Black Rapid or Holdfast.
I got that lens I love it so much!!! I still use my other lenses thanks to the adapter. That lens with the R5 I fell in love with photography all over again
This sounds like a silly question. But how do you rest your camera (with 28-70mm attached) on a table (or flat surface) when not in use? Because of the heavy weight of the lens it always tilts forward (and rests on the tip of the lens). Does this cause a strain to the Camera-to-Lens connection point?
After watching your enthusiasm now I want the Canon RF 28-70! I have the R6 paired with the 85mm 1.4, but the versatility of the 28-70mm makes me want one. Time to save up! lol
Such an amazing review, thank you! I have been eyeing this lens to replace my primes because I feel like they're slowing me down now and this looks sooo gooood.
Thanks Katelyn. It's an insanely heavy but great lens. I use a peak design strap across the shoulder and body to distribute the weight while not actually shooting which really helps with potential fatigue rather than carrying in hand most of the day. For photographers that hate straps, I get it, but in this instance I think it's a really good idea. Loved your comment about zoom lenses and what focal length to use having had your experience with primes. The way I do it is to say, okay let's do some wide angel shots and I try keep the discipline of not zooming during this phase and vice versa for tele or mid tele end of the zoom, otherwise you can lose your way a little. Treating this lens like having 4 primes is the way to go imho. Cheers
I so I am getting into the R6 soon and looking at the most popular starting lens , its seems to be the 28-70, 24-104, 15-35. If I am a video guy with my You tube channel and need something for vlogging and outdoor videos, camping , reviews etc. which lens is a good starter?
You are so amazing. I found this video while trying to understand if I need the lens and now I know that I definitely do need it since the look of a prime lens is exactly what I am going for. And I agree that years of shooting with prime lenses made me a much better photographer, I thought about it but never heard anyone else saying this. I also never leave comments on RUclips but you are just so amazing! :)
Hello! I just purchased the Canon R camera. Can I use this lens, (RF 28-70 f/2.0), with this camera? Thanks. Love your informative videos, by the way. Bill.
I got my first ever camera R5 and I coupled it with RF 28-70 F2 L lens. I use this lens for landscapes, portrait, group shots of friends and family and I love this lens so much. This lens leaves my camera only when I’m shooting wildlife with RF 100-500 F4.5-7.1 L lens.
This was really enjoyable seeing you talking about this lens with so much passion. I shoot Micro Four Thirds, but if I had a Canon Mirrorless I would really be tempted to buy this lens. Thanks for sharing!
Been shooting fashion and fine art for a couple of years. Rented this lens to use with my R. Loved it. Got a cover shot with it. I ended up buying the RF24-70 2.8 because it has IS and the R does not. Once I step up to the R5 I will sell my 24-70 and get this lens. Love the emotion in your reviews.

There is the 1.6x crop mode which makes this a 112 f2. Why not use that instead of the 135?

I agree!
I bought a refurb of this lens through Canon about a month ago and... good gravy I love it! I was bragging on it to a fellow photographer and she just couldn’t believe that the photos I showed her were NOT taken with a prime. It’s just the best thing!!
That's a great idea for getting one! It's so crazy how much the images look like they were shot with a prime! CRAZY!
Im here after your first warning video.. and i knew you would change your mind. You can still walk around as before, you only have so much better tool in ypur hands now. We dont need 1.4 and changing lenses, this is the holy grail walk around lens.. no primes needed with this monster.
Your personality is just like Venessa joy. You guys have so much in common right from the soft and politeness to the equipment to the experience.
Thanks for watching!
I have been using primes for years too but oh wow this is a unreal lens for weddings, its like a few primes in one lens shooting at that f2
should I get the RF 135mm or 85mm (for general photography) since I now have the 28-70? I also have the 70-200 2.8 L
Rented an R5 and this lens to shoot my brother’s wedding. It was amazing. Wish I had the need to own one. AMAZING!!!
It really is amazing!
I’d love to see a side by side with the RF 24-70 to see if f2.0 is worth losing wider frame, less size/weight and IS
I think it is totally worth it, but that is a good video idea!
Thanks for sharing!
Nice advice 👍
Just a small note, but I think you meant to say "subject isolation" instead of "compression" when referring to the benefits of primes, as compression is of course achieved by using telephoto focal lengths.
Thanks for watching!
My copy arrived today. CHUNKY! Do you still own/use yours? And you still travel with it? I don't see what not, right?
We love it!
@@KatelynJames Do you keep a filter on it? I don't think I will. I generally don't do that. I think the hood offers some protection and I'm very careful.
Is it a huge difference to shoot F2.0 vs F2.8? Would be nice to see comparison shots between RF 24-70 and your favorite lens
I’d love this as well. Deciding between the two
It's not ...not whole fstop like switch f4 to f1.2 . You get more problems like vnet distort aberration maybe focus problems wider focal length wider aperture along very high prices just as focus breathing at telephoto problems. You losing at least 24 focal length unless you also have 16-35 no is f2.8 rf 15-35 or 35/24 primes.
We love it so much more!
I love it too ! I switched from Nikon for this lens and it’s my favorit lens for my R6
Totally worth switching for!!
First lens I ever bought with my R. I now have the R6 and R5 and it lives on my R5 . I have the battery grip and even though it is heavy it balances it all out so well. Highly recommend!!!
Thanks for sharing
I am tempted by the r5... maybe one day!
Before everyone runs out and orderes one, I ordered mine in FEBRUARY from Adorama and it's still backordered.
It is worth the wait!
agree.... once I got the 28-70/2, all my other Canon lenses are kind of lonely. Even 85 1.2 RF is kind of sitting on the shelf.... 28-70 just has this amazing rendering that 24-70/2.8 lenses don't.
TRUTH!
Definitely! I'm so surprised how little I use anything else!
Thanks for watching!
I think that's the one of unbelievably PERFECT RF mount lenses ... other one is RF 85mm F/1.2 .. you should try that one too !
We have it and I do love it!
Thanks for sharing!
Messy? Nahhh
Did the 24-70 RF gave you the "creamy" clean bokeh you were looking for?
Messy ?.. I thought it had a beautiful bokeh for a prime lens .. compared to rf 24-70
2.0 can’t look like 1.2
Not sure what y’all looking for lol
Try using a hand strap and I guarantee the cramping of your hand will go away. SO much weight is distributed to other parts of your hand and it is truly a game changer. I use the Joby hand strap that also has a quick plate for placing ona tripod, but it's awesome.
I am shooting with the R6 and the ef 24-70 f2.8L with the adapter I CANNOT wait to get this one!!!!
Yes!! You're going to love it if you like the 24-70!
There will be those who disagree, not me. If it helps the workflow, and the client is happy, 'nuff said. You go girl.
Thanks!
Highly recommend a battery grip. Net your fingers won’t hurt anymore. Helps balance the weight immensely.
THanks for sharing!
You are such a positive person.
Thanks for watching!
Re: Heaviness - I got the SmallRig 3813 Mini NATO Side Handle -and the cage - and I can just go on and on - even though the lens is heavy :D
How many time do you actually use 2.0 do you really think it's that much better than the 2.8 ????
We use 2.2 ALOT! 2.0 every now and then.
I have the EF 24-70 2.8 USM II and as a 2nd shooter for weddings its by far the most versatile lens in my kit. I can’t afford the RF 28-70 f2.0 yet, but hopefully someday.
I actually bought it for Astrophotography with the R6. It’s amazing for that too
Thanks for sharing!
I suggest getting that battery grip, balance out the weight and also help with aggro.
I shot with this lens at a wedding and the battery grip... a big win. No fatigue and the balance is like they were meant to be a combo from Canon. Everything about it is perfection.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks thomas!
I am loving your reviews.
One question: Do you wish it had an IS(Image Stabilisation) capability?
It has not been an issue
Thank you for your videos. You're like an adorable friend in the Canon RUclips community. :)
You're the best!
I’m looking at switching from my whole Nikon setup to R6 + this lens for the af and this lens! Great video - thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Good to see you really love your bridge camera.
Thanks for watching!
Back in 1991 I bought the Canon 28-70 f2.8 to f4 lens I then upgraded in 2000 to the 28 -70 f2.8 through out, so I used this focal length for 30 years for weddings mostly on film its a great focal length and very convenient and now it's a stop faster.
Thanks for watching!
Just invest this month à R5 with 70-200mm2.8, and 24-70mm2.8. I just changed my whole entire system from the Nikon F mount after having used it for years. I am sad that I didn’t know before about this lens before purchasing the 28-70mm
Welcome to the canon family!
I got this day one with my R5. I love it. And the weight is fine for me.
Thanks for watching!
I shoot indoor sport so zooms are important because I have limited room to move when I'm court-side. I also need to crank my shutter to 1/1000 to freeze the motion. This lens has been a game changer for me, because my images now have half the noise of the people beside me using f2.8 zooms.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing!
We rarely use the 50mm now. It blows my mind haha
@@KatelynJames - Now I'm wondering if I should have bought the RF 85mm f/1.2L instead of the RF 50mm f/1.2L....
Your video made me giggle, I rented this lens and an EOS R last year and was so blown away, I have been saying THIS IS THE BEST EVENT Lens Ever Made! I have put money aside to buy one for a few months now.... I had to get the R6 first and that was a game changer!
It is so true!
We do not, we had them for the mark 4, but never used them
Amazing lens.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
This is such an underrated comment. I've also moved to using an extensible L-bracket (SmallRig). It's a game changer.
I got that lens I love it so much!!! I still use my other lenses thanks to the adapter. That lens with the R5 I fell in love with photography all over again
Yes! I feel like this is almost the only RF lens you need, especially if you have good EF glass!
@@KatelynJames I agree if anything I just need the 100mm macro to complete my set
I have not had an issue with this.
Indeed - this lens is game changer! Get a side strap such as the peak design clutch and you will never get tired using this combo!
Thanks for sharing!
After watching your enthusiasm now I want the Canon RF 28-70! I have the R6 paired with the 85mm 1.4, but the versatility of the 28-70mm makes me want one. Time to save up! lol
I think it is worth it!
Are you continuing to use the R6..?
Oh yes! We love it!
I have the 28-70 paired up with the r5. Absolutely love this combo
I have heard great things!!
Such an amazing review, thank you! I have been eyeing this lens to replace my primes because I feel like they're slowing me down now and this looks sooo gooood.
Glad it was helpful!
Cheers
Thanks for watching!
I so I am getting into the R6 soon and looking at the most popular starting lens , its seems to be the 28-70, 24-104, 15-35. If I am a video guy with my You tube channel and need something for vlogging and outdoor videos, camping , reviews etc. which lens is a good starter?
I would ask Tyler he would be a better resource for that!
Whyyy is everyone posting this when it’s backordered 🤣 I WANT, but can’t get it
I was desperate to get it and did a search across America to buy it used. It took about 30 min to find one. Perhaps I was lucky.
haha my bad!
Love your video reviews. Do you think it would work well for video and photo of indoor college volleyball games?
Oh I am not sure
Great channel. Crisp delivery. Juicy gear.
Glad you think so!
And Canon should give you a percentage. Where is your referral link to B&H and Amazon?
Love it!! Thanks for watching!
haha i know right!!
Hello! I just purchased the Canon R camera. Can I use this lens, (RF 28-70 f/2.0), with this camera? Thanks. Love your informative videos, by the way. Bill.
Thanks for watching!
Do you plan to purchase the R1 or R3 to manage the weigth easily on this 28-70 f/2?
Thanks for watching!
The 28-70 and the 70-200 RF are gold.
Sure the 50/85 prime is nice too but they are not absolutely necessary.
Thanks for sharing!
my fav lens too, sold my 50 1.2 but kept the 85 1.2
I am thinking about the same thing!
What lens are you using for this video?
Thanks for watching!
i cant wait to have this and pair with my 16-35mm f2.8 and 70-200
It is amazing!
Amazing!
This was really enjoyable seeing you talking about this lens with so much passion. I shoot Micro Four Thirds, but if I had a Canon Mirrorless I would really be tempted to buy this lens. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I love the way you talk about this lens🥰 thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks so much!
Thanks so much!
Just found your account after buying a Canon R6. Thanks so much for all the info. I really appreciate your down to earth personality and useful tips from the field! Do you have any tips for getting started with off-camera flash or flash in general?
There is a video in my channel... ill try to find it!
