    I drove out of work parking lot and huge exhaust leak from that same joint on my Subaru Tribeca. Perfect video for me to learn how to complete task myself. Thank you big time.

    Nice you cleaned up those bolts for the customer. Some people wont even bother with something like that.

  • @vollandt
    @vollandt 2 года назад +5

    The spring bolts should never be tightened so fully compressed like that. There should be some gap between the coils just as the video shows before being removed. The springs are there to allow that joint to absorb the stress in the system and flex. When the springs are tightened down like that, flange welds and other parts of the exhaust have to absorb the stress and will end up failing pre-maturely.

    Sure would be nice if my exhaust bolts looked like that. Hardly can tell there were ever bolts there, just spikes of rust! But that's what grinders were made for, I suppose.

      Assuming the nuts come off easily and you have your own hoist and there iss't some other rotted part that collapses as soon as you touch it...

    You can also have someone plug the exhaust and the gasses will make more noise coming out.

  • @joshuamoore24_7
    @joshuamoore24_7 4 года назад +6

    That's a stupid gasket design. I replaced one on a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 5.0 V8 and it was ceramic. Subaru needs to make ceramic exhaust gaskets (exhaust donuts). That gaskets going melt out of there being made of lead and right behind catalytic converter!😂

      Never heard of them being made out of lead. I thought they were all made out of Graphite.

    If you have a smoke generator you can use that. Engine off. Put the hose in the tailpipe and stuff rags around it to somewhat seal it. Look for smoke. Don't forget to remove hose before starting engine. You may need to plug the muffler weep hole temporarily.

    The springs are not supposed to touch like that. That joint has to move. Too tight.

    The DONUTS look like a Ceramic composition. Not LEAD. Outlawed years ago, exc. for battery posts and pesky domestic mfrs.battery cables. IMPORTS have better made batterycable connections.

    I’m no mechanic but if I we’re doing this job on my own car then I would have splurged and spent a few extra pennies for a couple of high grade nuts and bolts. But that’s just me.

    • @drivencrazy2792
      @drivencrazy2792  4 года назад +5

      The reason I cleaned up the old ones is because they have a shoulder for the springs to ride on. Dealerships would carry them- but I didn't want to wait overnight. If my memory serves me correctly.

    If all repairs were that easy, I live in southern Quebec,Canada and because of the salt used during winter cars get rust up and exhaust repairs aren’t easy at all but good video though.

    Where did the old Gasket go? 😮

  • @joshuamoore24_7
    @joshuamoore24_7 4 года назад

    Well if you have a similar vanished lead gasket again maybe it would be best to find a ceramic one of similar sizes or use ceramic exhaust wrap and get the shape of the replacement looking like the lead gasket, maybe use some fold and wrap and unfolded and wrap then silicone glue to tack the end of the exhaust wrap to hold in place. Then bolt the flanges back togather.

    I am replacing an intermediate pipe from the second cat converter on my 05 GMC Canyon 4 By 4 crew cab . It has a spherical type flange connection with the raised ball on the converter and the female groove on the Intermediate pipe flange! I just wire brushed the raised part and put some anti seize on it ! I left it slightly loose. Until I had muffler hung and supported then tightened it up good! I used good Dorman rust resistant bolts . Should I break the connection apart and put some sealer on the ball or is there a gasket I am missing ? It has small leak but not sure if it will seal up !.

    Why not lightly sand the area and add a little lube to give it a better chance for a solid long term seal? Is that not idea in this case?

    If the gasket is loose can it make a bank 1 Bank 2 too lean

    • @drivencrazy2792
      @drivencrazy2792  5 лет назад +4

      You are correct, it cannot make the motor lean. But what it can do is Trick the O2 sensor into thinking the motor is lean and then throwing a code because of it. Because now it is an irregular amount of unburnt are going through the exhaust and throwing off the air fuel ratio that the O2 sensors are reading

    • @keanureeves757

    • @keanureeves757

      One more question even though it's on the passenger side it can still fool the driver side

    • @drivencrazy2792
      @drivencrazy2792  5 лет назад +2

      @@keanureeves757 I think in some cases that it can. If both exhaust merge into a single exhaust with an O2 sensor Downstream, it could very well trick the wrong side of the motor. And you have yourself a great night as well!
