THE BEST FROMSOFT GAME Oh duuuude if you want a coop buddy for the chalices either as a part of the series or privately lemme know!! They’re completely optional
I WOULDVE NEVER SEEN THIS COMING IM SO HAPPYY edit: def play at your own pace! you’ll figure the mechanics out, just have fun and we’ll be happy to see your progress regardless
True. And it's a shame that some people just don't know how just watch videos. I get it, there are skme RUclipsrs that are pretty terrible at games and sometimes *internally* I'm like, "man they're terrible," but at the end of the day it's not that serious and we watch this stuff for entertainment and that's it.
It’s unfortunate but when you cultivate a fanbase around some of the most complex and challenging games, you’re inevitably going to get the people who take things way to seriously cause they after all invested a lot of their lives and time into mastering the craft of playing these games efficiently.
Yeah, there are defenetly those of us in the fandom who have taken it upon themselves to be gatekeepers of a sort. I doubt they view themselves as such but their constant complaining and "correcting" acts as such, for sure. :/
Yeah, how dare people voice their opinions on something that, by definition, should garner opinions. Oooohhhh... y'all only want positive thoughts. Pathetic.
@@Heazie And right on cue, you show up. You didn't actually add anything to the conversation at all. Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you have the right to voice if to people that never asked for it nor want it. Grow up.
Some non-spoiler tips for John, if he wants them. Managing stamina is important. If you use all your stamina on attacks, be sure to be in a position where you don't have to dodge. Otherwise, always keep enough stamina left so you can dodge an attack. In regards to health, always keep it topped up, if you get to half health, heal, unless you can counterattack - as counter attacks give you HP back. Insight changes things in the world, the Doll came to life because you gained 1 insight. It also can change the enemies' attacks when at a much higher amount. You generally get it from madman's knowledge and also from encountering bosses. It is also used for summoning other players as well as purchasing items from one of the baths in the hunters dream (there are 3 in total, though one of them is just for cosmetic changes to the little things in the bath, you can change their hats). Firearms are generally used for a parrying system. If you fire your weapon just before an enemy hits you, you'll hear a high pitched "ding" noise and the enemy will slump over. You can then press attack while standing in front of them for a "visceral attack" which deals lots of damage. Visceral attacks can also be accomplished by slowly walking up behind an enemy and using the charge attack, then pressing attack after they're stunned. When you're going through the world you might see these little weird bug things. They scurry away from you when they see you. If you can kill them, they drop upgrade materials. You seem to hit boxes and barrels a lot, rolling through them is more fun! And the last tip, fire is effective against beasts (as in fire paper which you'll get later on). Electricity (Bolt paper) is effective against some of the other enemies, I think they have a different coloured blood when you hit them (white or clear blood, I think?).
Good tips, but clarify that when you say "Press the attack button" or "Press attack", that he knows it's R1, or light attack to trigger the visceral. Also, my only other insight is that Bolt is effective against the Kin. The Kin are pretty much the Lovecraftian looking enemies. Most of them have white skin and look like an alien abomination but you won't meet any of them until a little further into the game. Fire is effective against beasts. But to be honest, you'll very rarely be using elements, unless you're planning a specific build. Otherwise, you're going to pick a stat (Strength, Skill, Bloodtinge, Arcane) or a mixture of two and build your character based on that. Honestly, when I think of building a character, I think of whatever weapon I want to use with that character and I build the character to the min-max based on the weapon's stats. But that's just my two cents.
@@ariusscorpius7705 It was enough of a nudge in the right direction. I didn't want to spoil anything, the more you explain something the more you're likely to spoil something.
@@deckard3755 I wasn't saying your advice wasn't up to par. I just think a bit of extra clarification on the Kin and what the "attack" button is would be helpful for someone who had never played through the game. Also, describing game mechanics doesn't really count as a spoiler unless you're describing a mechanic that you pick up along the way that changes the way the game plays. For instance, I don't think it's a spoiler for you to explain how combat works, but if you're telling me about an ability I'll be getting later in the game, then I might consider that a spoiler.
@@ariusscorpius7705 Tbf, i think my best moment playing bloodborne blind was finding out it wasn't just a werewolf game. So i think not mentioning lovecraft for a blind playthrough would be best. tho im not sure if he was already spoiled when he started this.
other tips: if you lock on before you throw, you'll throw directly at whatever you're locked onto. if someone's doing a super telegraphed attack, you can use the gun to stagger them. Really good for killing the werewolves and Cleric Beast. you get insight for doing certain actions throughout the game, like finding bosses and areas. It does varying things depending on how much you have
As someone who loves these games, I always enjoy watching new people come in and play through them. The community can be toxic as I've experienced but this is a great series and I hope you enjoy playing it
@@SnailHatan That's doubly so for the souls community unfortunately. Lot of gatekeeping, elitist behavior, talking down on people getting into these games. The online of these games has a huge amount of scummy players compared to what I've seen in others.
The most important *tip* really that the game sucks at explaining is visceral attacks: upon staggering bosses, shooting enemies in the middle of their attack, and doing charged attacks to an enemy's back, a special audio cue plays and the enemy becomes stunned. If you walk up to the enemy and press *R1* during this time, you will perform a special attack that obliterates their health.
@@JohnWolfe To add on to this, the gun's main purpose is to get Visceral attack opportunities. It's basically parrying from Dark Souls and Sekiro, but you use your gun instead. If you shoot an enemy at the last second before their attack connects(much easier on attacks with long wind-ups), then you will "parry" them and they will fall to one knee staggered. Use R1 at this time to get a Visceral and take a big chunk out of their health. This is SUPER useful on big/slow enemies and for boss fights, although it can be really tricky to time and obviously if you miss time a boss's attack it'll hurt. Also, learn to love your dodge. You can aim the quickstep you do while locked on based on what direction you point the left stick in when you press it, so you can side step and basically strafe around the boss to get behind easier. I'm pretty sure you've probably already heard about this but just in case, when you are dodging or quickstepping you are temporarily invulnerable to damage for a split second. So, if you were to say use dodge just as an attack is going to hit, then you will roll right through the attack and take no damage. I loved seeing how quickly you picked up on things and improved every time you died and had to re-clear the trash. I especially loved how you were invested in learning about the lore too, I can't wait to see what you think about things once the plot picks up later on! Take it slow, enjoy yourself. Trust me, we love seeing you being passionate about a game you're playing and most of all having fun!
John, I know you're pretty into lore, (especially when it comes to Lovecraftian things,) and the best tip I can give is that in Soulsborne games, a lot of the lore is hidden within item descriptions. If you highlight anything in the menu and press square, it will likely give you some insight, and a larger view of the item itself. The pebbles have a particularly interesting picture. I'm very excited to watch one of my favorite content creators play one of my all-time favorite games.
I'm sorry, but can we just sit and appreciate how fucking hot the soundtrack to this game is?? Like its legendary. When I played Bloodborne, it really added so much to the game and it's perfect
He’s not doing half bad, just needs to find his vibe or groove, I hope this series does well but regardless I’m in for the ride however long that may be.
So here's some overall tips and advice: General advice: - A blood vial is worth 40% of your current max health. Though in most cases it is preferable to keep yourself near maxed out, as you can quickly fall into low health after a single surprise enemy attack, or due to being hit by a heavy enemy attack. There are a lot of enemies that can tear down your health quite quickly, so keeping your health up is a good idea. - In this game your stamina bar recovers quite quickly, and nothing really costs that much stamina, so leveling up your endurance is actually not needed much at all. It is completely up to you of course, but it can help to know that this is the case. - Your attacks stun enemies a different amount depending on the attack, the weapon and the target enemy. Certain enemies can completely ignore the stun from certain attacks, so observing new enemies is recommended. Usually the rule is that big enemies stun the least, while they will stun you the most. - All humanoids, and a few other creatures can be staggered by a parry and a backstab. To perform a parry you need to time a gunshot to the enemy attack's windup and attack frames, and these windows vary a lot depending on the enemy. If timed right, the enemy will stagger and you can perform a visceral attack by pressing R1 when you're right up against their face. If you're not close enough or positioned wrong, it won't work. You can also perform a visceral attack on their back by landing a fully charged R2 on their back. This too requires a specific angle in order to count. You are completely invulnerable to everything during a visceral attack. - This game, along with other From Software games, has input buffering. The game will queue the button you press during your previous action within a certain window, so spamming buttons is punished quite heavily in these games. Worse yet if you're hit while you press a button, you will be forced to perform that action no matter what. - It is preferable to time a dodge after being hit, rather than attacking instantly back. Sometimes you can make it work, but not in most cases. About Dodging and Evasion: - Your dodge roll and quickstep both have i-frames, so you can use them to phase through attacks unharmed as long as you time them correctly. Due to the i-frames being limited, in some cases it is preferable to be completely outside of the attack's reach. In most cases the locked-on dodging is better, as that way you stay focused on your target, your dodges are faster and thus you can perform them more frequently as well, and your dodge attacks will rush you back towards the enemy for quick punishes. But your locked-on dodging causes your character to be somewhat magnetized towards your opponent, which means the locked off dodging can be better when you wish to have more freedom about where you wish to dodge to. - Most enemy attacks move the enemies forwards, which means if you get hit by an attack, the most dangerous thing to do is to spam dodge backwards. A lot of the enemy attacks have a specific amount of stun that can cause the "panic dodge" to synchronize perfectly with their following attack, resulting with the player being hit again. In this game counter-damage value is very high, which means being hit due to a poorly timed dodge is punished heavily. - When you're sprinting, you cannot dodge. Instead your character will jump if you tap the dodge button while in a sprint. And while you're locked on, you can only sprint forwards, so it is preferable to sprint unlocked in most cases. This mechanic was introduced in Dark Souls 1 and works exactly the same way. - You can move faster on a ladder by holding the circle button. This doesn't cost any stamina. Attack mechanics: - All weapons have an R1 combo, while an R2 in most cases is a singular attack that can be charged. In most cases a fully charged R2 can also be followed up by another unique R2 as long as you have stamina to perform it. - Every weapon has two dodge R1 attacks, one for a stand-still and the other for closing-in the distance, which only occurs after a quickstep. Each weapon also has a unique backstep R1 and R2 attack, along with sprinting R1 and R2 attack. And by flicking the stick forwards and pressing R2 you can perform a jumping attack. The jump attack input is identical to how it is in Dark Souls. - Every weapon has a transformation attack, which needs to be queued in order to activate. To activate it you need to perform a backstep, a dodge or any attack first before you chain the L1 after it. This means a transformation attack can also chain into itself. - If your character holds the transformed state of the weapon in two hands, this means the weapon has a unique L2 attack. These L2 attacks vary from singular attacks, to unique combos and enhancers. The L2s are quite unique between weapons, so experimentation is recommended. - There is also a handful of weapons that have mid-transformation attacks. As in pressing R1 during the normal transformation animation will allow you to attack early. But there is only a handful of weapons that have this feature.
Some other tips so that John can get them from the same comment thread: - every red lamp means there's an NPC you can talk to, like the one you see to the right of the door in the floor at 33:58, they are also at windows like the one right in front of central Yharnam's lamp and you should always try to exhaust dialogues and then talk to them again after defeating bosses as they might give you items or other stuff :D - regarding getting your blood echoes back after you die, they are where you died and look like a blood puddle, but if there are enemies nearby they kind of take them and when that happens you can identify them bc they have blue/purple glowing eyes and to get them back you have to kill them, like what happened with the werewolf at the beginning of the game or with the dude at 49:10 - while on your inventory, you can press square to show more information about an item which can give you useful information on what they do or how to use them and some of them even have a bit of lore -You can use circle while on ladders to climb them or descend quicker
Only thing I would add is some mention of insight. Insight affects the world around you (and your resistance to being frenzied, more insight, the less resistance you have, though this won't be too important early on). In essence, more insight means weird things start to happen, some helpful (like the doll being alive), and some not so much. You gain insight from finding and killing bosses, as well as certain encounters in the world.
Hi John, Here's some beginner friendly, non-spoilery advice: 1. At the start, it seems rolling is the best, but sidestepping is better. In this game, it is important to look for openings to attack, rolling creates distance and most of the time, the enemy already recovers from his missed attack before you close the gap and attack. Sidestepping gives you the opportunity to stay near the enemy and punish him for missing-- and as what you have learned from fighting the werewolves the first time, it's all about dodging at the right time. It is normal at the start to panic and just randomly side step everywhere, but once you get into it, and learn about the enemy's attack patterns, sidestepping will be your best friend. 2. You might have noticed that you unintentionally did a 'riposte' attack (ex: 40:04). What you did was backstabbed a guy, then they 'staggered'. When an enemy is staggered, an audio cue plays for a second. Once they are staggered, they kneel down and you can hit them from behind using a normal attack to do a riposte. Riposte deals a lot of damage. 3. Following up on riposte, you can also do them even if you're in the middle of battle (in the case you cannot backstab them). Your best friend, in your case, the blunderbuss (gun), is your tool. You can stagger enemies with the gun. To do this, you need to hit them with the gun at the exact moment that they are going to attack you. The perfect enemies to practice them on is the 2 brick guys at 1:17:26. That's also the /exact/ moment where you can use your gun to stagger them. 1:17:30 is also another perfect time to shoot them to stagger. Again, once they're staggered, an audio cue will be played and you can riposte them (even from the front -- i think, as far as I remember) 4. You already encountered a lot of 'NPCs' in the game by knocking through doors, but you might have not noticed that everytime there is an interactable door, there's a red lantern. Feel free to explore and talk to all possible places where there are red lanterns. They give lore and some even give side quests (ex: 1:14:29 and 1:27:03) Other than that, that's the most basic advice that I can give. You already know the strategy for this game John, try, analyze, die, repeat until win. Also, as what others mentioned, the DLC is amazing! Definitely play it once you finished the base. Hope you enjoy!
One of the best things about John's gameplay videos is that he is a good player and he learns quickly. He also has good instincts about ingame decisions (most of the time).
30:56 the coughing was coming from inside that building, but you can't speak to the man through the door, you have to do it by the window. Any house with a reddish-yellow lantern beside it means there's someone inside you can talk to :)
i have a ps4 but could never make it past the first level bc i'd never played a souls game and didn't really get how they worked. now i'll finally get to see what's beyond the starting area lmao
SOME TIPS!!! -Red lanterns next to doors in Yharnam means you can interact with NPC's. -Every item you pick up has a description. This is vital, as most of the lore/ story of the game is there! - The gun is mainly used for parrying. Shoot an enemy right before they land an attack and this will stun them. When they're stunned an audio que will sound, and you can visceral attack them with r1. The same method for a visceral attack applies when you sneak behind an enemy and strong attack them
Amen. This is the first comment I found here that covers the actually important things, my god. I was internally screaming at him to talk with the NPCs at the windows as well as the doors. Also to press square on the items in the inventory so he would read the full descriptions for that lore he wanted...
Ok John, just a couple of small mechanical tips, no spoilers at all. -If you look at your weapons, you'll see two numbers in the damage category, one in white and one in blue. The white numbers are the damage of the weapon on itself and it goes up everytime you upgrade it at the dream. The blue numbers are for scaling and upgrade bloodgems, scaling goes up as you level up whatever stat the weapon is associated with (strenght, skill, bloodtinge or arcane). -The way damage works in this game is that scaling isn't as strong as the damage of the weapon itself and the gems. So, just focus on getting the requirements for the weapon that you want and move on to health and indurance. Focusing on health is very good for a first playthorugh. -After you upgrade a stat past 40, it caps, and the benefits for each extra level beyond that are halved. So, don't focus on a levelling a stat past 40 (unless there is a reason like, there's an arcane artefact that demands a minimun of 50 arcane). -The way online works in BB is that, everytime you summon someone to help you, an enemy appears ringing a bell that attract player invaders to your world. So, you won't get potentially invaded as long as you don't ask for help, unless the enemy is already present in the world for some reason. Invaders have -25% maximun health. -The weapons are pretty well balanced, just choose whichever you enjoy the most. -Difference between the pistol and the musket. Guns in this game don't deal real damage unless you aim for a bloodtinge build. Guns are use for parrying, pistols can parry from afar potentially making it safe if you mess up the timing and it's effective against large enemies. Muskets have short range, and well work with human sized opponets, even if you miss it can potentially be safe because it shoots so many bulllets at once that it may stagger the enemy.
Don't you think some of your tips are a little advanced for the current game progress? He hasn't even skilled yet, has only the starter weapons, does not know where to upgrade weapons and no idea what a gem is..
@@LocoHinato I tried to mostly keep it to stats, I believe the biggest roadblock new soulsborne players encounter is, actually understanding what the stats are, and what the different numbers mean...
John, this is the most important information about this game you can get: Messengers can wear hats. Jokes aside, don't be afraid to be aggressive fighting enemies- the rally mechanic lets you recover some health back for a short period after taking damage so whaling on enemies can really cut down on blood vials. Visceral attacks are the explosive blood geyser stab you did a couple of times this video and take a chunk of health off enemies. The deep chime noise lets you know an enemy is staggers enough to use it. Eventually you can recover health from them which makes it a nice free heal! Enemies have attributes which make them stronger or weaker to weapons and elements. Beasts are weak to slash and fire so you might get some extra damage from the werewolves with molotovs, if you aren't saving them. The gun is your long range parry/ counter and getting a shot in before they attack leaves them open to Visceral attacks, which makes bigger HP goons less time consuming to fight. Guns are extremely useful so it's worth practicing before Gascoigne. Running through everything is a totally viable strategy. You've got places to be! Most of all, have fun!
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Checking up on the wiki, "slash" should be "serrated", which is a hidden damage modifier for certain weapons vs beasts. You'd be better off checking online sources for the actual percentage bonus as you won't find information in-game.
I've loved this game since it came out in 2015 (I've watched so many RUclipsrs do their playthroughs, walkthroughs, speedruns, share their awesome plays, and funny glitch videos), so I'm truly happy that you've also discovered this masterpiece, John. I don't have a PS4, but I get to live vicariously through those who decide to pick this series up (and many others) that I adore. You'll enjoy this. Have fun, good hunter! :)
Failing is part of the process of a gameplay, so don't berate precious John; in my opinion I'd rather appreciate the failing as a part of a process, than to expect John to be perfect and do everything right and harass him for it. I have respect for John and whatever he does because he puts a whole lot of hard work and dedication into his videos and I'm grateful for it :) ❤️
My husband, loudly, the whole video: JOHN, NO!! ah, yes, good, John, good. Wait, no, you aren’t ready!! Look out, John! Look out!!! Ah, I’m so proud of you, excellent.
im going to be honest that i know and have seen bloodborne playthroughs through out the years but has never sat down and see the entirety of it as a teenager. i guess as an adult, i find this interesting now. so excited i get to see JOHN play it too!
I'm excited! Also I'm saying this somewhat early in the video: the light attack isn't the visceral attack, the visceral attack happens when you attack a staggered enemy with a light attack. You've staggered a couple enemies (examples 32:40 and 33:47) and there is an audio cue that plays as well as the enemy like melodramatically falling. EDIT: and then you did one at 40:00 lmao
Spoiler free tips! Just stuff I noticed from this video. 1: following the walls and destroying objects will often lead to hidden passages. 2: lit red lanterns outside windows and doors usually lead to dialogue with NPC’s, some NPC’s will have you initiate obscure side quests. 3: learning to utilize your gun will save you so many headaches. Parrying with it will open enemies (even some bosses) up for visceral attacks for big damage. I’m so excited to watch this series! And love your videos! Almost forgot! You can’t really aim the Molotov’s but you can lock on to the enemy to make it much easier to land the throw.
John, here's some real advice to help: 1) Lock on often. In fact, always lock on to an enemy unless there's a very rare, specific reason not to. 2) Lock on and dash side to side often. 3) Prefer fast attacks to charge-up attacks unless you're attacking an unaware enemy.
I'm so happy you are giving this game series a shot! It can be a little punishing, the despair of loosing all your "currency" (as you so aptly put) can be enraging. But you won't lose your "experience", because, as you realized, there is a pattern to this game. And by playing it you increase your own "irl experience" with the game. I'm here for the long haul and love watching someone new to the game experience it. It's okay to be frustrated and it will feel very slow starting off, but the pattern you're already beginning to understand will start to appear before you will see how to progress in the game as a whole. My tips would be like others talk to everyone, (red lamps/light by doors mean talk-able npcs), keep talking to everyone till they repeat themselves, read item descriptions at least off screen and then talk about the ones you find interesting in the video, *use the gun*, don't be afraid to die in the game, and don't be afraid to grind for 'currency' and over lvl if you want to. It will make the game easier. The gun works as pull/interrupt mechanic. You can use it to try and pull an enemy to a place you'd rather fight it. And enemies, especially big ones, will wind up for attacks timing a gunshot during that will interrupt/stun them allowing you to run up and preform a powerful counted attack. Try and experiment around with it and you'll get the feel. :D Can't wait to see more from you, and there are probably much better tips from others in the comments I'm a rather casual SoulsBorne gamer myself.
As a grizzled, toothless Bloodborne veteran, it brings me so much joy to watch someone figure it out for the first time. Seeing it all go by again from a newcomer's perspective is just delightful! Looking forward to more!
the monster chase at the beginning with John running around being “ you guys stored weapons a round here? Are there any weapons around here?” was hilarious haha
I don't know much about this game myself so I'm glad you're going into it blind! Makes it fun for people like me who know nothing about these popular games! I'm excited to see you play this!
Every building that has someone inside to talk is marked with a red lantern so you don't have to click on every door/window. Armor sets in this game don't offer a lot of difference in therms of survivability even though you saw a huge increase in the hunter set. Threat armors in this game as vanity, it's way more fun to look cool than try to maximize stats that have minimal differences. Good luck on the playthrough!
A surprise for sure, but a welcome one. Don't worry about how the playthrough will go. Everyone's first playthrough of any Souls game tends to be an absolute disaster filled to the brim with mistakes that will make you feel embarrassed after the fact. It's normal and completely fine, as learning through mistakes is one of the main methods of improving in these games. Don't worry about how you will do, instead take things as they come and learn at your own pace. You're in no rush. You will miss things, you will make mistakes, it's expected and something that is better to just accept than to worry about avoiding. You will carry those mistakes and experiences into your next attempts and playthroughs, performing a little better every time. It's kinda like engineering really: you make a huge mess, but learn all sorts of things every time, like what caused the mess, why and how to prepare in case you create that same mess again. And if you succeed, you have no mess to worry about anymore.
Exactly. The souls community is full of elitists at times who love scrutinizing new players and making sure they know that "those two steps you took in that direction? That was wrong". Theres not a single member of the souls community that played these games perfectly their first time through, regardless of what they say. I play these games on the regular, get through with maybe less than 10 deaths overall, but the first playthrough was ALWAYS a massive mess of an experience. A first playthrough of a souls game pales in comparison to a second one, but I think most people tend to forget after so many playthroughs
@@thatgiambalvoguy I honestly think making mistakes is part of the fun in these games. Just seeing how badly you can screw up something for the dumbest of reasons, only to then do it right the next time without any issues, can be downright hilarious at times. Though I will admit, I can be a bit of an elitist myself. I find no enjoyment out of easier options, so I tend to advise against using them in general. But everyone has their own sense of fun. For me it basically boils down to this: Am I here for the fight, or am I here just to win and move on? The answer to that question tends to vary depending on the situation.
@@highvoltage7559 Oh nothing compares to even just trying to route out a boss run from a bonfire/lantern. It usually results in you running into a horde of enemies, or going the wrong way and experiencing the dread of "oh no.." and realizing you lured the entire horde of enemies. And in terms of not wanting the easier options, by all means play how you want! I tend to avoid taking the easier/cheesy routes too, but i will always recommend and offer an easier method if a new player is willing. I get it though, i refused to summon in every souls game cause i had the mindset of "i NEED to beat everything solo first"
Hey John, here's a pro tip: You don't want to use your charge attack so so often like you did in this episode. Charging the attack takes too long and by the time you charge an enemy, it will already have attacked you. So the trick is to use your normal attacks against the small enemies, because you can attack faster AND it kinda cancels their attack too, and use your heavy/charged attacks on bigger enemies, since they are slower and you will have no problem with them this way. Love your vids man, hope this gets to you! All the love all the way from Brazil 🇧🇷❤️
Nah man, charge attacks if you can land them are legit, and depends on your weapon, some weapons a player will use and grow into simply because it goes to their playstyle such as spamming heavy blows. Bores the game down to try to do it all one way when this game offers so many options. He's actually doing really good.
Damn, I wish I found this stream live. Beginners to this game are so much fun. Not because they’re inexperienced, but because I love this game and I wish I could experience for my first time again.
Since everyone here is giving gameplay advice, I figured I'd give a tip or two related to buildcrafting! So, when you inspect weapons they have a series of symbols with letters next to them at the bottom of the screen. This shows how much the weapon's attack power is boosted by a certain stat. Bloodtinge generally affects firearms, arcane affects magical weapons and items while strenght and skill both affect most melee weapons. (You can inspect the symbols by pressing options while on the menu) Another thing to note is that serrated saw-like weapons do more damage to beasts by default! For a first playthrough it's best to just focus on strenght/skill and health. Stamina gives minimal bonuses but can still be useful and arcane and bloodtinge require very specific builds and weapons to make them usable. As far as the weapons go, the saw cleaver is probably one of the best if not THE best weapon in the game. It's widely used in speedrunning in combination with beast blood pellets (a buff item you'll find later on).
really really really awesome that you started playing this game! Im lvl 329 on my 4th NG+ run through and i can easily say this is my favorite game ever. some cool little tips! -Most of the story and lore are in the item descriptions if you wanna learn more than what the game normally gives you. -STOCK and farm blood vials and bullets as much as you can possibly stand lol -Red lanterns near doors and windows mean you can talk to some important NPC's -Blood gem Fortification is REAL and you NEED to do it if you want those spicy hitting weapons. (You can find really good OP gems by doing chalice dungeons in the hunters dream) -Having people come help with bosses is really fun and helpful but remember for every person you bring in. It makes the boss more aggressive and have more health. -Explore! There's a LOT of good items, secret bosses, and goodies laying all over in hidden little spots if you take the time to find them. John choosing whether to play online or offline: “Doesn’t playing online mean people can invade your game?” Me: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA if there WERE invaders maybe. RIP Bloodborne PvP Community
@@JohnWolfe Pretty much. The PvP community has been dead for awhile and trying to match with people on the current servers is pretty aggravating so most players just don’t do it. You might get one or two towards the end of the game like Serky Jerky stayed but for the most part you’ll just get messages and whatnot. Keep in mind though that not all messages are overtly helpful as the Soulsborne community is notorious for it’s trolls that tell people to jump off cliffs but you could get a few helpful people that suggest using a certain item like fire against a boss weak to fire or telling you where to drop for a secret or loot location.
@@JohnWolfe You may get invaded every now and then but it shouldn't be too bad with how old this game is. Playing online allows you to read player messages which may contain hints or tips, and see how other players have died so you may have some warning. You could also co-op if you wanted, though it's somewhat tedious. (Being in someone else's game doesn't count for your progress, for example.) May be worth trying out for an episode or so.
Hey John, a small little bit of info for you that I see no-one else giving is that when you’re looking at item descriptions and you press *square* on the controller it gives a more detailed explanation of what the items purpose is. It shows what it does on the loading screens occasionally but it might be helpful for you since some of the brief descriptions don’t really tell what the item does all too well. Happy hunting!
John, I would just like to say. Thank you. I have extremely bad anxiety and in the last two years I have suffered immensely from it. From bouts of health anxiety to worrying about troubling thoughts that cloud my brain day and night and usually keep me awake when I’d like to sleep. Ever since I found your channel I’ve had something that I can enjoy watching that keeps my mind occupied. I rarely enjoy play throughs, but your videos are so delightful and your personality is great. You seem to have a kind heart and from one kind heart to another, I thank you graciously.
May I use your beautiful words to thank John for the same? I've been struggling with panic disorder and anxiety for years and John has helped me a lot to go through difficult times and still is. His channel is the only thing that can bring me joy sometimes so thank you so much John Wolfe and thanks to you for such a lovely, brave message and for reminding that I am not alone in this battle. I wish you the best from the bottom of my heart. Please stay safe.
John, I never leave comments on your videos but have been watching them for years. Just chiming in here to let you know that I love Bloodborne with all my heart and am so glad you're playing. I don't play videogames myself, really just enjoy the story/lore and visuals when someone else is playing (which Bloodborne is great for). I actually put on walkthroughs of Bloodborne before bed to relax. Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you to keep up the series and have fun with it. I'm so appreciative of your channel and especially your respect for viewers, developers, and yourself as a creator. Thanks dude!
This has to be my favorite playthrough from John. I love the genuine reactions to first time encounters with enemies and mechanics of the Souls/Borne series. And if feels extremely nostalgic to see someone discovering how things work for the first time with one of my top 5 all time favorite titles. Plus to top it all off, John picked up the overall game flow really quick. Proving that FromSoft games are more accessible than most people would think/expect
As a long time fan of John, I have been waiting years for him to be playing my all time favorite game. Hell, I never thought I’d see the day he’d be interested in it but I’m so fucking happy nevertheless
Love that you're finally playing this. It is a horror game. Constantly dying. Don't feel discouraged when you die. Once you get the hang of it, the game becomes really fun and fulfilling

I've been dreaming of you playing this game, because I just adore your humor and reactions but I also know about youtube algorithms and I don't want it to cause you problems with youtube promoting your videos. John's intro sounds like hes talking down an armed gunman instead of a fandom. NGL they can have pretty similar attitudes.
@@ariusscorpius7705 True true, good to be clear about things.
@@ariusscorpius7705 Tbf, i think my best moment playing bloodborne blind was finding out it wasn't just a werewolf game. So i think not mentioning lovecraft for a blind playthrough would be best. tho im not sure if he was already spoiled when he started this.
other tips:
if you lock on before you throw, you'll throw directly at whatever you're locked onto.
if someone's doing a super telegraphed attack, you can use the gun to stagger them. Really good for killing the werewolves and Cleric Beast.
you get insight for doing certain actions throughout the game, like finding bosses and areas. It does varying things depending on how much you have

As someone who loves these games, I always enjoy watching new people come in and play through them. The community can be toxic as I've experienced but this is a great series and I hope you enjoy playing it
So effing true...
Literally every community can be toxic. That’s evidenced by…every community that’s ever existed
This. So. Much. This.
More importantly, the damage of a visceral attack scales with character level. Overall defense also scales with level.
oh, I think that's what I accidentally did a couple times in the video and I didn't understand what it was or how I did it. Thanks!
Agreed, they did however do a good job explaining mechanics in Sekiro.. It was poorly explained in here.

Agreed. It's better to learn with no help.
Help is fine when he asks for it, just don’t shit all over him and be rude tbh
It’s not hard
So here's some overall tips and advice:
General advice:
- A blood vial is worth 40% of your current max health.
About Dodging and Evasion:
- Your dodge roll and quickstep both have i-frames, so you can use them to phase through attacks unharmed as long as you time them correctly.
Attack mechanics:
- All weapons have an R1 combo, while an R2 in most cases is a singular attack that can be charged.
As a dark soul player, john gameplay on Bloodborne gives me headache😂
Some other tips so that John can get them from the same comment thread:
- every red lamp means there's an NPC you can talk to, like the one you see to the right of the door in the floor at 33:58, they are also at windows like the one right in front of central Yharnam's lamp and you should always try to exhaust dialogues and then talk to them again after defeating bosses as they might give you items or other stuff :D
- regarding getting your blood echoes back after you die, they are where you died and look like a blood puddle, but if there are enemies nearby they kind of take them and when that happens you can identify them bc they have blue/purple glowing eyes and to get them back you have to kill them, like what happened with the werewolf at the beginning of the game or with the dude at 49:10
- while on your inventory, you can press square to show more information about an item which can give you useful information on what they do or how to use them and some of them even have a bit of lore
-You can use circle while on ladders to climb them or descend quicker
God comment
Only thing I would add is some mention of insight. Insight affects the world around you (and your resistance to being frenzied, more insight, the less resistance you have, though this won't be too important early on). In essence, more insight means weird things start to happen, some helpful (like the doll being alive), and some not so much. You gain insight from finding and killing bosses, as well as certain encounters in the world.
Also, if you die you can retrieve your blood echoes. But if you die again on the way to get them, they’re gone. You lose them.

I CLICKED SO FUCKING FAST JOHN YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND OH MY GOF
Hi John,
Here's some beginner friendly, non-spoilery advice:
Again, once they're staggered, an audio cue will be played and you can riposte them (even from the front -- i think, as far as I remember)
4. You already encountered a lot of 'NPCs' in the game by knocking through doors, but you might have not noticed that everytime there is an interactable door, there's a red lantern. Feel free to explore and talk to all possible places where there are red lanterns. They give lore and some even give side quests (ex: 1:14:29 and 1:27:03)
Other than that, that's the most basic advice that I can give.

What a legend.
John, this is the most important information about this game you can get:
Messengers can wear hats.
You said that beasts are weak to slash attacks, but in my weapons menu I only see numbers for overall attack damage, blunt, and thrust.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Checking up on the wiki, "slash" should be "serrated", which is a hidden damage modifier for certain weapons vs beasts. You'd be better off checking online sources for the actual percentage bonus as you won't find information in-game.

I knew about serrated, just had never seen a stat called “slash” in Bloodborne.
This game is an absolute masterpiece, the intriguing lore, and the lovecraftian gothic atmosphere its awesome
Failing is part of the process of a gameplay, so don't berate precious John; in my opinion I'd rather appreciate the failing as a part of a process, than to expect John to be perfect and do everything right and harass him for it. I have respect for John and whatever he does because he puts a whole lot of hard work and dedication into his videos and I'm grateful for it :) ❤️

im going to be honest that i know and have seen bloodborne playthroughs through out the years but has never sat down and see the entirety of it as a teenager. i guess as an adult, i find this interesting now. so excited i get to see JOHN play it too!
John, here's some real advice to help:
1) Lock on often.
Can't wait to see more from you, and there are probably much better tips from others in the comments I'm a rather casual SoulsBorne gamer myself.
Went on here to see a "Hardcore game noob" such as my self and you are a chill cool ass dude. Keep up the dope work man. Very entertaining yo.

Fashion Souls >>>>
I get it though, i refused to summon in every souls game cause i had the mindset of "i NEED to beat everything solo first"
Hey John, here's a pro tip:
You don't want to use your charge attack so so often like you did in this episode.
I used charge attacks all the fucking time. You just have to space it and time it right
I think he can see how long charge attacks take. It's nice if people want to help, but let him develop his play style.
Nah man, charge attacks if you can land them are legit, and depends on your weapon, some weapons a player will use and grow into simply because it goes to their playstyle such as spamming heavy blows. Bores the game down to try to do it all one way when this game offers so many options.
He's actually doing really good.
@@michaelelmes2135 Yeah but for new players, charged attacks will be too difficult.
YOOOOO?!?!? I was not expecting this!! Hell yes, my fave game. Hope you enjoy!!
Bloodborne has and always will be my favorite game of all time. So I’m incredibly hyped to see you play it.

really really really awesome that you started playing this game! Im lvl 329 on my 4th NG+ run through and i can easily say this is my favorite game ever.
some cool little tips!
-Most of the story and lore are in the item descriptions if you wanna learn more than what the game normally gives you.
-STOCK and farm blood vials and bullets as much as you can possibly stand lol
-Red lanterns near doors and windows mean you can talk to some important NPC's
-Blood gem Fortification is REAL and you NEED to do it if you want those spicy hitting weapons. (You can find really good OP gems by doing chalice dungeons in the hunters dream)
-Having people come help with bosses is really fun and helpful but remember for every person you bring in. It makes the boss more aggressive and have more health.
-Explore! There's a LOT of good items, secret bosses, and goodies laying all over in hidden little spots if you take the time to find them.
Hope you have a good time playing! And if you need any help, plenty of people including myself are more than willing to hop in and make it a little easier and fun!

John choosing whether to play online or offline: “Doesn’t playing online mean people can invade your game?”
Me: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA if there WERE invaders maybe. RIP Bloodborne PvP Community
Fair, but late game on a new run recently I still get sidewinded in the last area. 😭
@@serkyjerky3519 I have the opposite experience: I look for people to fight but can’t find any ;-;
So basically I can play online and get to read messages, but not have other people invade my game?
