    Thank you so much for your insights. Yes I am late in finishing and was just going to pick up where everyone else is But something said NO finish the right way.!!! OMGosh.. Jacki Welch is a very good friend of my sister-friend and her husband. They traveled together to the Holy Land and got the real story of his findings. I am so very glad I was inspired not to cheat but to go back or I would have missed this!!! Smiles Sister Glazier

    Back in the mid 80's there was a man in my old San Diego area ward, who was a convert and held a masters degree in theology from Oxford. Prior to his conversion, he had started his own church since none others he had been introduced to seemed to hold to the gospel outlines as he had learned during his studies at Oxford. Then he was introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by a General Authority. It took some time..but he said as he studied the Book of Mormon and discovered it contained chiasmus, he realized there was 'something truly unique' about the book and gained a testimony..for which he was ultimately baptized. We used to have weekly scripture groups with this man in San Diego..and his knowledge far exceeded anyone in our ward. He informed us a man named John Welch had discovered the chiasmus in the Book of Mormon. Interestingly..these many years later, I've now been in John Welch's stake and had the opportunity to hear him speak on chiasmus. Small world ❤️

    I love how David emphasizes that it's crucial to a faith journey to have questions. It is normal, yet I know so many people who have felt shamed by others to question things as they learn and grow..so they keep it inside which can eventually cause them to feel unworthy, which is a pity. So thank you David, from many people, for speaking this out loud. I 'think' it was Elder Holland who also mentioned things akin to this last conference. No one should ever feel bad or shunned for questions, or even some doubts, as they grow along the path.

    Some thoughts about chapter 36. Learned more about Alma's experience with the angel and that he could not hear the angel's words, but the sons of Mosiah could. Alma's struggle with his own iniquity is an example of being subjected to the terms of justice. And it was not the angel's words about the Savior's atonement that Alma grabbed onto, but remembering his father's testimony! So poignant and underscores the importance of parents' teachings. ❤️❤️❤️

    I love you guys! I wrote this several years ago. I feel is applicable here:
    Have you ever wondered why you may be counseled/inspired to take a certain path to later be sent in another direction, by that same inspiration? I have!, and I questioned the Lord. He was kind and answered me through the scriptures while in the Bountiful temple.
    D&C 3:2 For God doth not walk in crooked paths, neither doth he turn to the right hand nor to the left, neither doth he vary from that which he hath said, therefore his paths are straight, and his course is one eternal round.
    I laughed-quietly-to myself but have continued to ponder and muse upon His answer over the years. I wondered and possibly rightfully so, since the scriptures are often both spiritual and temporal in nature and design, that the eternal round consisted of a time frame as does the word day, in regards to creating the earth.
    I had an extremely . . . Hummmm let's use the words of a dear friend of mine from California who called me the other day because I was on her mind. She asked, "How are you?"
    "I am doing well, but I had an interesting week, a week or so ago."
    "Interesting in your world is very interesting."
    A three hour conversation pursued. I do not have three hours but if I did I am sure we would all be laughing hysterically at my very intense learning experience as did my dear friend and I.
    Suffice it to say, that not only I but several people with stewardship over me or over certain organizations were given the same inspiration and direction that I too was given. I knew what was going to be asked of me. Now to make the three hour story extremely short. That inspiration, of which several people received did not come to fruition. So why is that? What is the purpose of the Father of the ward, a President of an organization and myself all receiving the same inspiration and it not coming to fruition?
    The answer lies in determining what is the eternal path that Father is on and what is the course of that eternal round?
    His path He tells us about in:
    Moses 1:39 For behold, this is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
    The course or one eternal round is how He goes about bringing us back home to Him. This course can often be confusing if we do not comprehend that the course is not the ultimate purpose of His work and glory: to bring us home! In my most recent course curriculum-in the difference between his path: bringing us home and the course of this eternal round: how He gets us home Father needed to have a set of variables all aligned and in place in order to teach and heal me and He used His servants to do so.
    So, I guess what I am trying to convey is that if the course work seems a little confusing or counter indicative of itself at times don't worry because that hinges upon ours and others Agency and in my case the need for certain variables to be at play with one another. In other words, the course is not clear from our perspectives.
    Although the semantics of the course are unclear at times we can have safety, security and exquisite joy in knowing that His path is to bring us home to His loving arms no matter the course that that must take!
    He will bring us home!

    I love this Chiasmus that is pointed out. My favorite thing about this is the central point is the Savior and the power of His atonement. I also loved that the matches are opposites. The first half being fear, terror and being scared to be around the presence of God, but after the central point ...THE ATONEMENT... Alma is full of joy and peace and yearns to be in the presence of the Lord. This is the power of the atonement.

    I think that the reason that deliverance was such a key theme of Alma the Younger’s ministry was because the angel specifically told him, “Go, and remember the captivity of thy fathers in the land of Helam, and in the land of Nephi; and remember how great things he has done for them; for they were in bondage, and he has delivered them.” (Mosiah 27:16) This is a commandment that Alma kept throughout the rest of his life.

    I loved thinking about the definition of Holy. We are also asked to be holy. I want to live with more holiness - more sacred purpose. How would I act differently if I’m focusing on lifting others and bringing them to Christ? I have a family reunion this week and my sacred purpose is to love and serve them. I’m excited to go with that goal.

As the hymn says, “gird to your loins.” Learn in your youth how to becomes a strippling warrior. Then put on the armor of God and use it to strengthen yourselves.

    You totally missed a part I really wonder about. In his advice to Shiblon he tells him “”bridle all your passions, that he may be filled with love.” Alma 38:12. How does bridling passions lead to love?

    • @susanhicken6998
      @susanhicken6998 4 года назад +3

      When you look up passions in the topical guide it says "see also: lust, anger, feeling, fury, and rage." Passions such as these do not lead to love other than maybe feeling...checking out feeling includes a scripture of being past feeling. Passion in a marriage is a totally different thing.

    Another explanation of kissing the scriptures is when an American Flag touches the ground, which it should not be allowed to do, if you kiss it in repentance, it makes it not defiled and ok again. Those are my own words in trying to explain what I was taught in my youth. If that is what we do with the American Flag, how much more valuable are our scriptures and what they represent, our Savior. I don't recommend doing this when others can observe you for their judgement of goodie, goodie, holier than thou,... will fall on you.

    Mormon's side bar statements found in Alma chapter 35 probably could be compared to the very same thing that Moroni alludes to when he writes about the "pleasing Bar of God."
    Failing that comparison, David could accept Emily's admonition about not comparing Mormon's musings as being as merely simple as a modern day television commercial by replacing this concept with the broadcasting concept of a "station identification" transmission.
    Abridgers, like readers, might need to take a literal breather. Imagine reading all the 116 pages of the Book of Lehi through to the beginning of Mosiah and remembering that there may have been more interstitial background material on the sons of Abinadom: Amaleki and his brother... ... what's his name? That young understudy of the retired spy named Zeniff who took all those people back to the land of Nephi? The second time? Could it be Abinadi? Yes, that could be it! Maybe?

    I am wondering how a chiasmus turned up in chapter 36 when there weren't even these chapter breaks in the first Book of Mormon published in 1830. This section did not even exist as a chapter until later, I think - did someone else know where to divide this?

    • @tylercook3831
      @tylercook3831 4 года назад +2

      Listening to John Welch on BookOfMormonCentral.com for their Come Follow Me video for Alma 36-38, he discussed his experience when he found chiasmus in the Book of Mormon while on his mission in 1967 when he and his companion went to a Bible study on a p-day and the instructor discussed chiasmus in the Bible. He then said how he learned the same style in the Book of Mormon and Mosiah 5:10-12 was the first one he came across. He said he liked to study from the earlier versions of the Book of Mormon before the current format which made it easier for him to study. Chapter 36 being a whole chiasmus is more coincidence even though the beginning and end of the chapter is a natural chapter start and stop.
