- I have been loving my time with my 2001 C5 Corvette, but there is one annoyance with the driving experience and I'm finally taking the time to figure it out and hopefully solve it.
ALSO in this video, I show you how to remove the shift knob on a C5 Corvette. This can be a bit tricky if it is your first time removing the shift knob. If the knob has been removed before then this process will be easier as I found out in the video.

That vette sounds awesome
Have Hurst ball with no daemon key. Cured the vibration by coating the threads with silicon. After it set up, no more rattle.
I just got my ABS and Traction lights come on and stay on after it coming and going in the past. Ahhh fun stuff w this thing
Yeah that’s annoying. Mine did that with the B&M shifter. Went to a C6 Z06 and haven’t looked back. Subbed to your channel.
I would LOVE to see you do the skip shift eliminator mod. That skip shift is EASILY the most ANNOYING feature on most modern cars with high horsepower V8s.
It’s probably the bushings that hold the shifter box in place they were out pretty badly and NGW makes replacement that uses brass Bushings but since you’re in there you should replace the whole shift of the various aftermarket companies that make awesome shifters however my personal suggestion is an NGW seeing as that is what I put in my Z06 my father has in his Z06 and we have them in two of the cars
first thought was the shifter knob but might want to look into the linkage and check that
Any recommendations on how to quiet road noice in my 2001 corvette coupe?
Do the anti venom mod, makes a big difference when shifting.
Sounds like it's the linkage to me, not the knob! Just a thought. When's the last time the flywheel was replaced/resurfaced? I had a 98 Cobra and it had the same problem, but it was because I got some rattle from the linkage because my flywheel was resurfaced poorly. If it's not the flywheel maybe the linkage needs some work?
The company’s that sell Corvette parts sell kits to rebuild the shifters. There is not much to rebuilding, just follow their instructions. You must make sure you lock the shifter in neutral. Their is a cylinder that the shifter is attached to. When I rebuilt mine I took some aerosol silicone and filled the cylinder about half full. The kit is just a spring and they send you 2 springs. The silicone made the car shift as smooth and easy as butter, it also made it able to shift much faster. Enjoy your Vette!
I drive a automatic but I thought I read on the forums that it's a linkage issue at the transmission. I think there was a video on it on youtube.
It’s like the janitor at Chevy designed that shift knob lol
Irregardles, that shifter knob sucks.Best bet is a simple "8",ball knob with shift pattern on it.First thing I did when I got my C5.also cut 1'2'" off the length of the shaft before you screw that puppy on!
Thank you.
Yeah Joe Dirt it and get some sleep. Nice C5 ! The C6's are getting in My price range now. I can barley waith to get one. Keep up the Videos !
I can parsley weight
man I love that vette
I need to correct my statements below. I said there was springs in the kit but as I actually recall it was “O” RINGS! sorry for the mistake
That first bent screwdriver... change the mechanical fuel pump on that Camaro before? 😉
It’s not the knob. It’s the actual shifter itself. There’s a linkage due to the rear mounted trans. Lots of little bits that wear out over the years.
Couldn't really hear yours, but I've had mine for 11 years and it's worse than yours. New clutch recently, and aftermarket shifter installed when I bought it so dont think it's the shifter.
Mine doesn't rattle but it was tightened down crooked so the shift pattern is at like a 45 degree angle towards the passenger and it drives me absolutely insane
Edit: it's an aftermarket one and the nut is already slightly rounded and I'm too chicken shit to mess with it cuz I don't wanna buy a new one
Shifter in those cars were shit in the factory getting NGW
MGW Shifter! Get some plastic removal tools and use loc-tite!
Unless something else under the boot is loose simply wrap some plumbers tape (Teflon Tape) around the threads. Problem solved
TOB
I broke that key.. well the previous owner did and I just made it worse.
Just get a c6 shifter
Did you not want a c6, I am going to buy a c6 but I also like the c5
Benjamin de Lannee for me... the c5 hits me right.. maybe it’s because they came out when I was in high school. C6s are nice, but look like most cars of that era.
How would you think you have it fixed when you did absolutely nothing to fix it ? Take off the shifter boot and look deeper
its way easier to remove the devils key with some pliers. i got the shift knob off in about in a minute when i did it. not sure why everyone seems to use the two screwdriver method
The real “fix” is to install an MGW shifter.
That was my solution as well.
Yeah $400 later lmfao
