Take another sports car of the era that is pretty equivalent as far as condition and performance, but has a quality interior. How much would that cost today (plus ongoing maintenance costs) compared to this Z06? Different car, but one I'm more familiar with- 2.5 years ago I bought a 1993 base Corvette for $8000; 67000 miles and very good condition inside and out. Another car from the era that I really like is the Porsche 928 GTS; the 1993 version did 0-60 in 5.4s -- the base Corvette was a couple of tenths slower, but in the same ballpark. So, can I get a 928 GTS in similar condition to my Corvette for similar money? Not even close. Looking at like $20k+ easily and god forbid anything goes wrong with it! Is the interior nicer? Without a doubt, but it isn't $12k+ nicer and it wasn't $40-50k nicer in 1993.

Honestly, C5 interiors are really comfortable and not bad. Every Chevy squeak's and rattles but that's ok. The 405hp makes me forget about those things
Yeah, the C5 isn’t really horrible considering the time and the price, and I didn’t buy my vettes for that (even though they could be better). I bought them for how they drive, the style, and the experience. It is amazing however that GM was able to totally redesign the whole car on the C8’s to mid-engine AND have the interior totally upgraded for the price they are. Incredible how the 2020’s were only $2,000 (approximately) higher on the base price than an based price automatic from 2019 AND have a dual clutch transmission.
Also, on anyone complaining about problems on them, you can go spend half a million on a Lamborghini and still have issues. If Lambos, Ferraris, and Mclarens didn’t have issues, they wouldn’t hire mechanics at their dealerships. There’s a reason why Corvette has such a great fan base.

Most N/A American V8 performance cars can get around 20 mpg or better in mixed driving easily. I could get low-mid 20s easy in my LS1 in a solid 50/50 driving mix. Complaining about hard suspension in a track focused car is like complaining the seats are too soft and the aircon works too well in a luxury car. But they still do it lol
I just did a cross country road trip in a 2001 C5. With my father, we started in Oregon, went north along the Canadian border, and ended in North Carolina. We absolutely loved the experience and had zero issues with the car after 3,500 miles. We never lacked for power even when going "a few mph" over the 80mph speed limits in Montana. The driving experience was phenomenal for a $12k car and we both agreed that the C5 earned our respect.
Jeff Uclyptis I guess only people who annoy the shit out of their neighbours with their loud, yet terrible sounding Hyundai Accent, and take a video of it, would find something like that cool 🙃
No mention of the only 3,100lbs that it weighs, or the near 50/50 weight distribution? Or that it had one of the fastest Nurburgring lap times for any production car of its era?
Even the regular C5 is a bargain. My dad bought a 99 C5 for around $20k in 2008 with 40-50K miles. He passed away in 2019 so I take care of the car now. It has 75k miles and it's a great car to drive around. I'm pretty sure the top speed is around 175 for the regular C5.
I own a 2002 C5 Z06 as well. Great car and tremendous bang for the buck in terms of performance. One interesting note: To save weight, it also had a thinner windshield compared to the other C5 Corvette models.
@@bluesky-ud9wg All of the C5 (and C6) models have an aluminum-balsa sandwich floor. It's great until your helper puts the floor jack in the wrong spot.
Yes...I believe GM cut corners there to put money where it really matters and deliver a high performance car that a lot of people can afford. I got so mad at Clarkston when he bagged on the C6's rear bumper cover on Top Gear. LOL
@@Buck9Customs Clarkston's opinions should not affect anybody in the slightest. Corvette is 3 times as reliable as anything England's thriving auto industry has put out in decades. I never knew the C5 Corvette had a HUD! Doug, my man, I thought I knew just about everything about the Corvette and it’s history. But a HUD from a car in this era? It blows my mind! 👍👍
I like the interior. There's no ridiculous plastichrome like there is on virtually every other car (inside and out). This thing is all business; no distractions.
cat well depends what you mean by built quality. All of my 2002 z06’s interior is functioning the same way it left the factory. Also those cheap plastics mean that the interior is stupid light. The door covers you can lift them with one hand, the dashboard is also very light, which translates that you don’t need to strip the interior down to make it a sort of a racecar. Well you do but you understand what I mean.
Absolutely. I like the cohesive appearance of the interior with its consistency in color and texture. The controls are intuitive and ergonomic. Plus it's very easy to wipe clean. BTW, the cupholder is for when you're parked, not pulling a G in corners. It actually has an ashtray with a cigarette lighter along with a passenger side airbag you can shut off. And unlike Ferraris, I didn't need a specialist to repair / replace sticky switchgear along with the rubber bands driving the cam. I LOVE my Rubbermaid interior.
I could honestly see him reading that to his kid to sleep if he had any. Reading it, the kid falling asleep, then him leaning over to kiss them and turning off the night light.
My c5 convertible was actually a super practical daily driver, so I have to absolutely disagree with his practically score. I loved every day of owning it until it was hit. By then prices started to creep back up, so it was impossible to replace economically. If I had the option I would’ve replace it with the exact same vehicle
@@EmilyRose900 Yeah, but I don't know why he says the handling is fantastic then. Good perhaps, maybe even great, but saying it's fantastic and only giving it 7/10 makes no sense.
When will you people learn that the standards for the Doug score is set by modern cars. The handling is amazing for a 2002 car, compare it to a high performance Porsche and it's shit.
DOUG - These pop up headlights gives this car a cleaner look. Meanwhile the Donut viewers - POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIGHTS!!!!!!! POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIGHTS UH.
I actually bought a C5 because of this video alone. And I race the shit out of it everywhere. Fabulously fun machine! Especially if you add headers, pipes, Koni shocks and good tires.
When I bought my 2004 Vette I was not buying it for the interior. P.S. I owned a 1973 previously, a plain Jane - no electric windows, cruise control, or electric seats. The 2004 wowed me .
That's right! I don't see why the softies are always complaining about the interior quality, as if I'm constantly touching the leather on my dashboard every single second. No way, when I buy a Corvette C5 it's all about performance and driving. I could care less about interior in a car like this. Plus, I actually really like the interior. It's simple and straight to the point, a throwback to the days long past. Why I love 90s and 00s cars over today's.
Ikr, it's obviously not great interior wise but it's comfy as hell ! It creaks and rattles but you don't mind when you hit the gas and numb the stereo !
you guys remember when you were running from the cops and the cops would say "We're in pursuit of a Z-ZERO-SIX Corvette." Man the memories. It was my favorite car to use in that game aside from the McLaren.
I enjoyed the review, brought back memories...I went from a C4 '96 to a '04 Z06 with the Z16 package with the CF hood, and I was amazed at the time at the fit and finish and overall quality improvement between the C4 to C5, it was dramatic. That said... In the late '90s there was a strong pressure on GM by enthusiasts for GM to build a simple, affordable, stripped-down Corvette for the masses to enjoy. The FRC was the result, and like the Z06, it was all about simplicity, affordability, handling performance and of course lightness. Heck, I recall pundits were even demanding that this "Billy Bob" version should have no comfort options, and be totally option-deleted down to manual door locks and crank windows. The Z06 was sort of the end-result, it had no option for remote CD changer, no power seats, no spare, even the glass was thinner for lightness, and the seats felt like they weighed nothing. It was supposed to be affordable, light, and simple, and perform very well, because that is what the market demanded at the time. It is ironic that Doug, like many contemporary reviewers, are now pointing out the deficiencies about the cheapness of the interior, etc, when in fact this was a genuine response by GM to give the people what they demanded at the time, using typical GM parts that were available in the late 90's. Back then I did not think that the C5 was any worse than many of the other late-90's era cars for fit and finish and interior quality, in fact it was probably much better than it's contemporaries.
I have zero issues with the interior. Honestly, I’ll take this interior over more modern cars with all that tech and screens and such. Cars have gotten super complicated now. I think this car is perfect for what it is and has nothing to apologize for
I own a 2002 Z06 that’s built 403 cubic inch LS3 that makes 600 plus HP. The car is lowered, built 6 speed trans, rear end and racing suspension with bigger brakes. 4 point roll bar with harnesses. The car performance is phenomenal. Best bang for your racing buck in the world.
Some notes for the Z06 C5: -The non-Z06 hardtop you reference several times in the video was actually the precursor to the Z06 and is known to many as the FRC (Fixed-Roof Coupe). It was sold for the 1999 and 2000 MY, and was replaced by the Z06 in 2001. -When you are looking under the hood, only the Z06's LS6 engine had the red plastic "valve cover, covers." All other C5 Corvettes had black covers with red lettering on the LS1. -The C5 was the one of the first cars with run flats, and the first with a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) to prevent driving on a flat and allow elimination of a spare. The Z06 swapped this for grippier non-runflats, and a can of fix-a-flat and an inflator. -The head-up (not headS-up, although I say it this way too sometimes) display in the C5 Corvette was definitely one of the most advanced for its time in any vehicle. The first one ever, was used in the 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and then the Pontiac Grad Prix. I had one on my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville. Although they are very handy for keeping your eyes on the road, they were mostly panned as being gimmicks at the time--until BMW and other luxury brands started to offer them a decade and a half later. -I have the same stereo in my 2002 S10 pickup truck. It also has a crack through all 4 of the small levels dials. And just like this one, it has "SCV" or Speed-Controlled Volume around the volume knob. You can control how aggressively the volume ramps up with speed (to compensate for ambient engine, road, and wind noise) by moving the outer ring through "off" and 3 levels of boost. -This definitely was one of the low points of GM interior design. It is interesting how GM got here. They actually had some classier designs in the '70s and '80s. They weren't luxurious or high-tech by modern standards, but were generally competitive. They were very linear, and modular HVAC and stereo units had rectangular holes which they slid into--but they fit flush. In the '90s, as everything went organic, GM got very self conscious about these rectangles, and tried to hide them behind plastic trim which sat ON TOP of the rectangular faces, making the borders more rounded. Unfortunately, since this trim sat on top, nothing could sit flush this way. If it did, it would surely rattle. IMO, the ugliest part is the melty looking vent at the top of the center stack. One facet that is easy to miss by looking at pictures, is that the dashboards of this era were cast from self-skinning foam, or foam wrapped in a vinyl covering. While the shapes are generally not pleasing, they are a kind of soft touch before the 2000's, when everything went to hard plastic. The plastic has crisper edges and tighter gaps, but feels even cheaper than cars like the C5.
@@andlat91 Okay, first PRODUCTION car. The 959 was a hand-built homologation supercar with hollow spoke wheels that shared its pressurized tire air inside the spokes to reach the pressure sensors. I think they did this to monitor not just flat tires, but in case of wheel cracking while racing, a leak would show up before disaster struck. The 959 also had run flat tires, but they were proprietary for that car only, and regular tires cannot be mounted in their place. The Corvette's system is closer to modern run-flats, except that the TPMS sensor is strapped around the drop center of the wheel, 100% inside the tire. Modern systems (even non-runflat) are all behind the valve stem. The modern system is better, as the Corvette one was more vulnerable when dismounting tires, if you didn't see it inside there.
@@eb110americana oh, absolutely. The Corvette system was a first in its own way and definitely innovative. The craziest thing is that usually innovative tech like that comes out in low production, high cost models (like the 959, Mercedes S Class, etc). Seeing it come out in an affordable vehicle like the Vette is crazy!
Nissan also had a HUD on the 1989 240SX. Not sure if other cars in Japan in the 80's had that feature, but my US model did. Was quite the revelation to discover that, and think, "wait... this car predates the C5 by quite a few years!" I had no idea Olds / Pontiac were doing that too, that's cool.
I've always liked the Early 2000s gm interiors honestly. I'm on my third one from that era now and I don't plan on getting different. Just nice, simple, basic. The seats are fantastic (Cadillac Escalade got em down pat) and just feels nice
OhNoes, a separate Airbag cover! Yeah, it's better that you have to replace the ENTIRE dashboard if you have a shunt / non-"totalled" crash with airbags deploying... Instead just a cover. Too many things on cars nowadays sacrifice function for form. And serve manufacturers perfectly by causing "one million dollars!" service bills.
C'mon Doug, god damn it. Thanks for driving the price up on C5Z's. I got to remodel my kitchen before I can get one. Now I never will. Thanks for nothing, Doug.

I owned a C5 for about 3 years, it's cheap, its plastic, you can ride in it for about 200 miles until your back hurts and the rear axles are weak. The seat motor's will go out and its $900 a seat to fix. So replace them with a whole seat instead. However you have plenty of legroom, it gets 30 mpg on the highway and a little modding and it's a Supercar. Don't pay more than $13,000 for any C5!

All the world's smugness about how their engines create more HP/L, as if that means anything, and all the crying about how enormous American engines are, but, in reality, Americans V8s generally very efficient, under stressed engines yet still make tremendous amounts of usable power.

cat well depends what you mean by built quality.

The c5 is my last favorite corvette simply because it has pop up headlights. Never really cared for the look of the newer versions.
Why do I somehow get convinced to that I want ALL the cars dougie reviews?
Simple, your a car person. I want Jay Lenno's garages.
Some notes for the Z06 C5:
-The non-Z06 hardtop you reference several times in the video was actually the precursor to the Z06 and is known to many as the FRC (Fixed-Roof Coupe).
WOW.
First AMERICAN car with TPMS.
The first car to have TPMS was the Porsche 959, all the way back in 1986.

Alexander Briggs equally? Let’s be fair. The Terminator was a whole three levels of crap under the Z06.
he should review all cars from NFS HP2!
Best looking Corvette.
Smooth in the front, and Brawny in the back.
Doesn't look boring like C6 and excessive like C7 and C8.
Plus, Pop-ups few
Nailed it. My fav too.
Have you seen the square LED headlight replacements? Perfect amount of modern edge with the classic curves.
Excellent review Doug! Need to get you in a C4 ZR-1!
He won't fit. Lol
Excellent review suggestion!
@@brokenmedic9133 Lol! But he would! Targa comes off. Not to mention Michael Jordan daily drove one back in the 90s for a few years.
I bought one 4 years ago. Makes 600hp on nitrous and it's prob been one of the most reliable cars ive ever had.

My pop had an 04 Z06, last year with the pop up headlights (they were rounded in 05). Such a gorgeous machine.
"when you're drivin hard, you're not lookin at the interior" Truth.
I graduated from a college of art and design in Detroit. One of my friends as a student, in fact, did illustrations for GM owners manuals. That was a little before this particular Z06, but...well now you know.
Douglas Cole How much did they pay you?
@@angelgjr1999 I didn't do the illustrations, a friend did. I didn't ask how much she was paid. Sorry!
Douglas Cole It’s alright. Cool story either way.
Sweet. Now c5 prices get to skyrocket. Thanks papa doug. Not like I was trying to get one or anything.
Lol..no they won't. People with taste and who don't like Fisher price interiors will not put up with GM products. I think you're safe man.
Sky Surv Aviation well you might want to check again.... they HAVE shot up
They’re still relatively normal in Canada.
@@theantsaretakingover based on this review? I don't think so. Rwd manual cars with any performance ilk have gone up. It's all relative.

Best review on a Corvette I've seen. Very informative. As someone who is considering getting a C5, I appreciate it.

Doug’s the type of guy to balance the stuff in his trunks in a tesla for better weight distribution
Daily drove mine for +100k miles. Unless you need to haul kids, it is very practical. I found it to be fun and reliable transportation. 400hp and 30mpg hwy, yes please. IIRC the trunk had more room than many mid size sedans.
Add it up and the Doug Score is: _I can't math_
Is it 57 or 56 Doug? hahaha

You know it's a great car when Hoovie bought one and sold it relatively quickly. If it was junk he'd still have it...
😂😂😂😂
You know its a great car when Rob Dahm buys a wrecked one and ROTARY SWAPS IT.
🔴 ZO6 is an awesome car.
Most sports car drivers buy cars for the speed/power and not the interior
Thanks, Doug. About a year ago, I watched this video and bought my C5 the next morning. Fortunately, last year in Philly we had ZERO inches of snow. Thinking of All Season Radials, and driving it all year long. Probably one of the only cars you've reviewed that I can actually afford...
Hi, I will be in Philly this year, do you know the value of a good c5z on market right now? And is the insurance expensive? I’m worried since I’m only 26.
Doug, a really cool quirk/feature you didn't touch on is that you can read the check engine light straight from the DIC (Driver information center)

Please start doing exhaust note clips :-)
He often does. I was a bit disappointed he didn't for the C5 ZO6...they sound nice.
Why would you want to hear the exhaust "note" through a camera microphone through your speakers?
@@xenonram why would you want to look at the car on a small phone?
He needs to do them for more cars
I've been commenting on doing this multiple times 😤
It has a manual gearbox so, obviously it's worth the money. Also, it's pretty much a perfect car for an automotive enthusiast, it's RWD, has pop up headlights, but most importantly, has a manual gearbox.
