The cost of the parts they used totaled approximately $6,5000. I have a 2004 ZO6 and spent $6,000 for the A and A supercharger kit. Running only 7 lbs of boot and a conservative tune it put down 525 RWHP. Beside NOS, the supercharger gives you the biggest bang for the buck. I have had this supercharger on the car since 2006 and put over 30,000 mile on it with no issues.
This is the comment I was looking for. Thanks.
Definitely don’t need brand new forged heads for An LS unless you want to make some serious power, these cars for fun daily’s only need a bolt on supercharger, intake, throttle body, injectors, and exhaust upgrades, and probably want a better clutch while you’re at it. if I were taking it to the drag strip and raced it then I would put forged pistons, cylinder heads, etc. and if I’m going through the headache of doing all that I’m Turboing this thing instead since it can handle all that extra pressure power and heat
@ALLDAYSLAUGHTER if you haven’t purchased a vehicle yet, the c5 is an amazing machine. I was lucky to find a zo6 for my budget, but have been slightly unlucky with how much I’ve had to spend maintaining it. But I beat the ever living crap out of it, so it’s not the cars fault. It’s by no means easy to work on, but I love that with enough determination almost all of it is doable. I’ve even done the dreaded clutch job on my own with some help and zero official schooling/experience outside of my RUclips phd haha. Did I mention it’s the most thrilling car for the money without a single competitor? The sound, the speed in a straight line, the absolute terror throwing it around a canyon, it’s just a raw sports/muscle car.
They don't know the platform. The engine is stout enough already, a supercharger is the way to go.
They were just going for a N/a build, boost is always an easy setup for the LS platform.
Everyone does cam, springs, and turbo on LS builds now.
C5 Z06. Don't get any better. Underrated LS6, no valve guide issues (C6) no overheating issues (C7). We want more of this Tommy!
Hell yeah, just make sure to change them stock valve springs as you get up in the 60K - 70k range as the yellow springs have been shown to break.
What a bunch of shit. Just put new heads, cam, intake, and exhaust like nearly everyone does on the c6z and you are golden. Hell, you can get away with just fixing the heads. If you absolutely need a bone stock car for whatever reason, don't get a c6zo6
Why not have all three? ;)
Ls3??
C5 is definitely my favorite Vette. LSx base , they've become a bargain to buy, and I think the C5 body looks so much better than the C4/C6/C7
Pat's pen collection is second to none! That pocket is being pushed to its limits!
It's insane how light C5 wheels are, even at that size. These have to be my favorite Corvette. You can tell a team worked very hard to develop it for that era. They hold up incredibly well even today imo.
They listened to the consumers, and they provided. Thats why the interior wasn't the best. They went with the lightest materials, and the best in suspension and power training. To give you the most out of your c5 z06.
So weird to look at this and think it’s the old school cool now. I remember when this car was first released at how amazing a 385hp factory car was. Or a couple years later when the 405hp version came out and I met a guy with a cammed one talking about supercharging his and my thoughts were “what are you going to do with THAT much power?!?” Nowadays that’s nothing.
Cory Holbrook ahh yes the good years when a mildly modified turbo civic could beat a factory Vette, not anymore 🤣
Yeah, but the current (non-Corvette) cars are almost 1000 pounds heavier......
I ask today, what are you going to do with all that power? 500, 600, 700+ hp, how do you even use that on the road? You jump on here cars after the first gear and you’re already at ludicrous speed.
@@rickhunter6513 these days its more about racing dyno numbers. Ppl wanna make big power just so they can say hey look my car makes 800 wheel.....ok? Lol. You cant punch it below 60 with 315 mickeys on the back what kinda fun is that? I love power as much as anyone but also realize useable power is more important and you can go fast and have fun without having an insane amount of power plenty of people have proven that over the years.
Michael Harris you got hat right. I drove my buddy’s 2015 Mustang Roush apthwt puts out 747 hp awhile ago. I got on it in 1st to 2nd and I was already at 110 mph!? It truly is an amazing car but totally not drivable. It was not happy just tooling around town. I actually had more fun messing around in my other friend’s Honda S2000
I’m in my garage turning wrenches on my C5 Z, while people are freakin out about the virus!! Yea😄
Nice. My garage gym is a nice place to be as well.
Wild Bill Nice
The very best kind of social distancing I think.
W Hoggdoc u damnn bet ur right!

I miss my C5; I was one the first to have a C5R-427 installed. Thanks to Corvette Fever Magazine for doing that!

I can't believe you didn't replace the harmonic balancer while you were in there.
For real 😂
They probably used the same bolt too I already know they had to go replace that after the first pull 😂
These guys clearly know what they are doing but it's like they didn't care to learn about the car idk
Mid 330’s stock and runs 12.6, and a 0-60 in flat 4. C5Z06=still a contender.
🇺🇸👍💪
crodrc51able put radials on and a very good drag racer and this will do damage on the streets on fully stock power.
@@TheBb6prelude Their real beauty lies on the track. Any car can be made to go fast in a straight line, but the C5 is a monster platform for racing.
There were some guys that ran high 11’s bone stock with them back in the day. Their times are on forums.corvetteforums. Impressive.
if youre at this point to install these upgrades, you might as well do an aftermarket harmonic balancer (they can go bad on c5's), $400, intake manifold $1000, and dewitt's radiator $600. I know its a lot, but these will literally make your LS1/6 and absolute boss to rag on and keep it cool and reliable
Absolutely love my Dewitt’s radiator. Vette basically never gets near hot temps now even under a lot of redlining
You can also just tune it so the fans turn on sooner
yep. i always wanted a C5 as my old man car. this sealed it. something to work on, and have fun with.
Do it. I finally caved and bought a 2004 Z06. The price was right and it was nearby and I haven't looked back since. First thing you will need is MGW sift kit and shocks and sway bars. The car feels like a legit race car and still rides very well. Ohh and if you want power you can bolt on heads and make 450 whp.
Rode in a bone stone one of these years ago. Impressive cars. Don't think there is a better bang for the buck out there.
These guys finally look like they come from 2020 instead 2003
2003 was a good year. The golden era of Trance music.
and my m275(v12 5.5 twin turbo) engine is from 2003.
My 04 Z06 came with 405 hp stock...I wished they covered All the little assembly details...and replacing the oil pressure sending unit and the harmonic balancer and front seal and water pump, and put in a 2 row core All aluminium radiator.
the 2000s were great I wish it would such a thing to joke on yjay Era jt was truly epic
If it wasn't for the C5, the C6, C7 and C8 wouldn't be here today. Respect to the C5 and there owners.
It's unfair to blame the c5, c6, and c7 for the c8.
You mean if the Ferrari wasn’t here there wouldn’t be a c8. C8 isn’t a corvette
They didn't show the part of removing the steering rack out. Lol
A big pain in the ass when I did mine
literally the worst part when it comes to doing anything in the engine bay.
Oh, the power of editing. I also noticed the absence of any steering rack issues. 8-)
I had a 2002 and it was awesome loved that car. Went to arizona to pick it up and on the way back 29mpg's. The thing handled excellent and the 405hp versions 2002-2004 put there power down good.
What happened to 'er?
Terry Hesticles a girl couldn't wait more then two seconds makes a left into her driveway as im coming straight opposite road, i swerve to avoid her clip her front bumper anyway and go crashing into a parked car, it was totaled. I made good money from the insurance i was positive on the car by alot but would have rather kept the car. Only had it for 2 weeks, lol. The car was owned and maintained by audi mechanic of all things. Lesson learned from that was never follow your instinct to swerve although accident was not my fault for the girl making a left I was at fault for hitting the parked car which ended up with more damage then the front bumper on the civic who made a left turn.
@@karpetcm of course it was a woman
10:16 our C5's are known for harmonic balancers going bad. Wonder why they chose to go back in with the old one. That and a ATI Super Damper just looks great under the hood.
they made up for it by using a new radiator cap
Back in 2004, I bought a black C5 FRC, second owner. Awesome car. My wife didn't enjoy having the heater on fullblast while in crawling CA traffic. I stupidly sold it in 2013... I'm getting another though.
If I remember right the Z06 in 01 was listed as 171mph top speed. It was lower than the 175 of the base car, gearing and aero were different and lowered it accordingly.
Exactly
They misquoted a bunch. 0-60mph in 4.0s flat is way off as is the 1/4 mile time. It’s closer to 4.5s and 12.0s.
LOL@ creative editing. Where was the part that you had to remove the steering rack to gain access to the timing chain cover, balancer, and the cam out? Or even the re-install of it? Hmmmmm…...interesting. You can clearly see it sitting in the parts pile @ 9:24. Nothing like making it easier than it seems!! @ 8:56 you can see the anti-lock module just dangling there with out a steering rack attached.
7:12 i agree. i thought i was gonna see a full exhaust header back, and an intake. you guys went hard from the start with the mods. good shit
If I was holding the old oil pump in my hands, a new one would be installed no question about it.
I'd also like to point out, the almost easiest thing to replace, a coil, these they replace, but an oil pump with 80K on it, reuse it. Even IF you can do it yourself why would you roll the dice? BTW I have a C6 Z in my garage.
how many LS oil pump failures you know about?
they did put a new oil pump on it
@@choppaj247 the newer 2007-2013 is not unheard of in 5.3s, we had one at school, the dealer thought it was just the gauge so they told them to drive it there and blew the motor

My 04 made 356/349 bone stock. It ran 12.2@116 on Hoosiers.
Yeah dunno where they got 12.7, unless because its an 01, ive got a bone stock 04, 9k miles, ive done a 12.3 @111mph with track tyres

8:09 "Gaskets don't really go bad on LS engines..." Say what!?!?!?!?!?!?! I love the show... But please, hold the LIES! I work on these engines every single day. Show me an oil pan gasket that is "not leaking" after about 150K miles. Also, valve cover gaskets, rear engine cover plates, and oil cooler block off plate are pretty much lawn sprinklers at that mileage as well.. I LOVE the LS engine... However, there are some truths that are known... 1. Fel Pro oil pan gaskets are necessary and should have been added at the factory. 2. The after-market Dorman rear engine cover plate (thicker with longer bolts) should have been added at the factory. 3. The oil cooler block off plate with embossed sealing rings, should have been added at the factory.
C5 z06 is the best sports car for the money today in 2025. Low miles z06 can be had for sub 32000 now which is wild. I sold mine in 2009 for 19000 with 35k miles to pay for college. They spiked in price for over a decade and are finally settling down again a little bit
The 2001 were rated at 385, 2002-2004 was 405hp.
My stone stock 01 made 352whp SAE on a dynojet though. Sometimes 02-04 makes more than that, sometimes they make less. It's pretty much a crap shoot for all 4 years.
gtdrummerdude in my shop I have never seen a 2001 making more power stock than 02-04.
gtdrummerdude a very optimistic dyno.🧐
my 02 had 405hp badge everywhere. Typically they dumb down the horsepower for lawsuit purposes. At the time they had 420-425hp
gdp005 405 was crank horse power not wheel!
Always replace the OEM crank pully with aftermarket. They are famous of wobble and walk off. also the 1 7/8" headers are incorrect application for stock 346ci LS motors. 1 3/4" is correct size for this application

I would have gone in a little bit of a different direction. I would have gotten a FAST 102 intake manifold and throttle body (which would have covered the cost of one of those cylinder heads). I would have sent the heads and intake in for a 5 angle valve grind and a port match match and not have used the TrickFlow heads. The rest is pretty spot on though. I think I would have beaten their dyno number by about 30 more horsepower and maybe about 40 more ft. lbs. of torque, with Cats still on it. Very nicely done.

I'm a fan of the light weight titanium exhaust, I would have liked to have seen how it did with just the headers. Then you could decide if spending money on a louder and heavier exhaust is worth it.
You don't gain any power from an aftermarket axle back, just noise. What I did was a TSP Header and X Pipe Kit, then welded a small section of Titanium pipe that slightly by passes the muffler for a little more noise. The perfect setup IMO. More power and noise while retaining the lightweight Titanium Axle Back.

Another awesome Powernation video. BUT, it seems like a LOT of work, parts, and expense for what, 40+ hp and torque? I just bought a 2003 Anniversary with AT. A previous owner put a cat-back Corsa exhaust and RAM air intake on it. I love the acceleration already. AND I don't have the expertise (or tools) to pull this off. Short version, I'm happy with what I got. I just want to maintain it's power and handling. And keep it clean, really clean. Honestly, it's a great looking, fast, grand tourer. And an American icon. Now, if I could only (pay someone to) add push button start.
the flutter around 5k on the dyno was probably valve float
Wow that's amazing. For so little work you gained so much. Congratulations gentleman. (:
I love the cars racing intro!
I have been looking for a c5 for about 3 or 4 months here in north Alabama and I cant find one like I'm looking for, all the c5's iv found are either super low mile never drove in the rain cars or straight up junk with a 10k price tag. All I'm looking for is a straight body and paint and decent interior, I really dont care about miles as long as it was halfway took care of. A solid roller is all I want, iv been wanting to see what I can do with a IRS setup and love vettes in 2004 I got a poster of a black Zo6 on my 14th birthday I got a soft spot for C5's. I already have a 03 ls6 block factory ci thats half filled with Texas speed forged crank and rods diamond pistons with arp hardware and a cheap summit brand aluminum fabricated 102mm intake and TB,LJMS turbo cam with PRC CNC'ed 799's and they flow they surprised me big time I had this combo in my old 3300 pound 99 Z28 with a garret gt55 88mm turbo with a th400 and 4.10 gear on e90 it went a best of 5.44 @ 126mph eight mile. I'm gonna have to have turbo kit fabbed up for the vette but a c5 with one of RPM's powerglides and good axles with a couple of bolt on suspension parts and a slick or radial I guarantee I could foot brake it and run 6.1xxx in the eight easy. I'm gonna keep looking maybe I will find one soon! lol
You mean eighth (1/8) mile not eight (8) mile dummy!!!
@@rhulse8904 No Dummy it was a typo phone it left H off smart ass! But thats ok if that makes me a dummy I'm a pretty successful dummy, Im sitting my shed looking at a single cab 03 Sierra and my 76 delta 88 donk build thats nearly done and there both tagged and insured and both have 400+ci turbo lsx setup's so yea im a happy country ass dummy!
