In Germany it's required that everybody on the road carry a 1st Aid kit as well as a reflective hazard triangle to place behind your car to alert drivers (and ADAC German AAA) that you're broken down.
I remember pulling up next to one of these around '06 in my VR6 Jetta, I was like "All right let's see how fast these things really are aaaand where'd he go?"
Would have been hilarious if about a minute after he pressed the "S.O.S" button, a few emergency vehicles approached, sirens blaring, and then a helicopter hovered over the parking lot he is on and a few "AMG Rescue Personnel" dudes rappelled down to save Doug. All while he is trying to speak over the sirens, wind noise and all the commotion. LOL!

Everything about these cars is bullet proof except the very elegant ABC suspension system. It’s all hydraulic and most systems start to leak around 80-100k miles. They are supposed to last 300k miles but most owners ignore the maintenance required to keep the system for imploding. It is a about $8,000.00 to repair maybe a little less at a Indy garage. DIY is possible but you better know what you’re doing and still have $5k for parts. I have a 2006 SL55 that was meticulously maintained by the previous owner but just had $6k in repairs for the ABC suspension. My car was $135k new and I paid $26k. So even with that huge repair bill, I’m still enjoying the beast for many more years to come. You gotta pay to play.
I think if you approach the ABC system like you would an aviation hydraulic system with regards to maintenance intervals you will find that it is very reliable. That being said it is still expensive but the ride is amazing.
Matthew Behr Exactly. I’ve spent a stupid amount of money on ABC, but doing the theorized coil over conversion would completely spoil the character of the car.
It’s funny when people underestimate ABC. You could buy a V12/AMG W220/R230 with an excellent service history and ABC will still kick you in the teeth and run off with your wallet.
3:20 Wrong Doug! The Renault Avantime also has that hinge that slides the door to the front because it has even longer doors, and it's a car that I would love to see you review! :)
It seems like there is always another person thinking just the same thing. My dad used to own one but sold it because its interior had been damaged by the previous owner. He had probably transported long steel bars in it.
Indeed - I have an Avantime, whats interesting is that Mercedes never really advertised the double-hinge on the CL, I only found out about it when watching a used-buyers review. I think the Avantime has a larger double hinge - so the door moves forward more, and there is also a trim panel covering the hinge. The Avantime also has the pillarless doors, but the windows are larger so the open space is huge - that alongside the massive (by 2002 standards) sunroof really does give you a convertible feel (and of course theres one button to open it all up!)
Some quirks Doug missed: The Active Body Control Chassis, The right mirror button, while being pushed in, activating a parking stance in reverse (that you can program), the side AND CENTER rear view mirror is bound to the memory seat positions that you have manually adjusted it to, if you press a memory button the center rear view mirror will automagically assume the position it was in when you safed your seat position. The hidden compartment below the drivers seat actually held the optional fire extinguisher and below the passenger seat, there was a first aid kit in my S class of that time, labeled from the outside. Despite my love hate for this car, the pricy parts that like to break around the time of being sold and what not, it was decently easy to maintain, given I would never put it into a mechanics hands but rather fix it myself. That was the highest cost, bringing it to a Mercedes dealership to get fixed would make up the highest part of the repair cost, which I assume, everyone in the comments and Doug himself like to think that magically would change if you bring in a newer model. My counter argument would be that newer models are increasingly harder to maintain yourself to build dependency on said dealerships and if you factor in the value depreciation of luxury cars, you got a decent deal all things considered.
Well I accidentally hit the send button before I finished. Anyway I noticed it tilting to the left, ( I see it from the rear as the nose of it is in the garage) and thought the left front tire had gone flat. Which it actually did but not for a couple of more days and not before the car was ( is) tilting an alarming angle to the left. So as I am looking at the car from the rear the front left side almost looks as though it would be dragging on the ground, it doesn't have the air shocks, has regular coil shocks so it's not the leveling system because it doesn't have a leveling system. I have to get it towed to a shop which I am terrified to do because, since I moved to this city, well suffice it to say if it weren't for lousy as well as dishonest mechanics I would never have a mechanic at all. I know I am being terribly verbose but I am just wondering if you could possibly direct me to a site where I might get an idea or if you have heard of such a thing happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated,. Oh I've been told a few times I should just get rid of the car but I'm pretty attached to the old girl. I've always kept it well maintained but this one has me stymied. I'm certainly not asking you to diagnose my car but I can usually find a forum where I get an idea of what might be wrong or what needs to be worked on but I haven't had any luck in this case so if you can be of any assistance whatsoever it would be greatly appreciated.
I think I want to pick up one of these. My mother in-law will always be riding in that back seat. Thanks for the review, hopefully she won't like that back seat to much :o)
The last time I was in Germany visiting family, we were driving home from the Frankfurt airport on the Autobahn; my folks let me drive because we were in their old 123 chassis Benz 300 Turbodiesel, which they'd had since my childhood, and which I adored. I looked in the rearview mirror, and saw driving lights waaaay back in the distance behind me, so I moved from the left lane (the fast lane) over to the right lane, doing it properly, used my blinker, checked for other cars, etc., and in the couple seconds it took to do that, the car behind me closed the distance. When I looked behind me again to see where it was, I was shocked to see it was actually just about to pass me, and it went by SO quick, it was like I was parked on the side of the road! It was just a black blur, but being a car enthusiast I recognized what it was. My dad also recognized it, and in a very casual voice said "mm...CL65 AMG... Gotta keep one eye on the mirror..." That car is MADE for the Autobahn; just eating up endless kilometers in great comfort, at warp speed, with absolutely no fuss or drama... Damn I miss the Autobahn!
So a friend of mine wants to sell me his cl65 amg for 22k on 51 k miles which is great... but I know he sucks on maintenance since he has 6 cars,so he didn't change oil for 2 years .. the ac stopped working .. those are the things making me not so sure of buying it,so I still wonder
typical german over engineering. thats what keeps mercedes humming along, all of the $$$$$ it costs to fix all these over engineered gizmos that invariably break.
Lot of people here being sarcastic about how Doug is making a car review, but I just see a man who has deep love for cars and shares it with us. Respect man ! 🙏
I own a 2006 CL-65 bought it with 12,000 miles in 2008. I've had to spend approx $25,000 in repair bills. I've used primarily dealerships for repairs.. At $ 174.00/hr the bill accumulates quickly. Many of the repairs have been redundant ones. Ignition coil packs have been an issue (3X) Many electrical issues too. Replaced a key for $650.00 . BUYER'S BEWARE
This is why financially smart people don't buy old luxury cars, it's not worth it unless you expect it to gain in value and you just collect them. You really should only be buying the highest end cars when you earn 7 figures annually and can repair them without sweat.
I own a CL 500 and honestly you didnt mention the ABC Suspension at all. It was groundbreaking since it was the first car to have an active suspension, which lowered bodyroll significantly and was also extremely comfortable. thats the biggest issue if you have a repair bill coming up.
I agree, when the ABC works correctly, it REALLY makes a difference in ride and handling. It can be quite expensive to repair if something breaks on it, though. Mine on my SL500 works great after I had to put a new pump in it [low pressure output]. I still have a leaky accumulator on one wheel, but I'll live with it because if I fix it, next weak link will go out! Enjoy her, Markus!!!
@@Opeladams no it wasn't lol ABC (ACTIVE BODY CONTROL) is Mercedes-Benz revised version of what's been around for a long long time. Just like a Ford model T and Ford Fiesta are both cars, but one is obviously better at what it does, yet they both do exactly the same thing. Cadillac had this long ago. So did Rolls and almost everyone else. Even Toyota.
I own a 2005 SL 65 AMG. I turn my own wrenches. Preventive maintenance is key!!!!. I have had it for a year and spent well less than $1k so far. Mainly on PM. Daily driver for me. That's the other key, they like to be driven. Sitting for weeks at a time wreaks havoc on this car. Things like the ABC suspension need regular attention. Clean fluid is important. MB originally designed the suspension as a lifetime maintenance free item. Not so. I would bet if an original owner simply paid attention to taking care of this car, it would last a very long time. Most new Benz owners rely on the dealerships. The sales department relies on the owner when the car is out of warranty lol! I did do a Kleemann tune bringing the numbers to 750 hp and 840 lb/ft of torque. That was only $800. Love this car!!!!
Yeah, especially with that tune. When the time comes around, your transmission, and your overall engine will be fucked. This is a UNIVERSALLY known car amongst enthusiasts for being notoriously unreliable and parts are insanely expensive. Not only that, thus car is an absolute bitch to work and you have to actually pull the engine for certain basic maintenance.
You have the same year I own but I havent had any issues so far and I owned it for almost 2 years hopefully it stays this way. What issues did you have with it? I'm trying to know as many issues as possible
Patient in time Go on benzworld.org Tons of info there. This car is very unique and has many electronics. That forum has been a blessing. I read the R230 and W220 sections of the forum. Both platforms are very similar. The SL65 is the R230 platform. The engine in trans in this car virtually bullet proof. One of the best transmissions ever made. That is if yours in the five speed automatic. Enjoy!!
Same. I have found Doug's reviews to be much better and engaging than any other review other there. Heck i don't even care about Top Gear or Grand Tour anymore. Well, ok i still do because who doesn't love the holy trinity of morons lol. But still, doug deserves high praise.
Until this video, I was not much of a Doug DeMuro fan, but watching him have so much fun behind the wheel of that German monster, I am now hooked! I smiled as much as he did on that drive. Great information about that overly engineered Mercedes as well. Nice one, Doug! I shall subscribe.
Great idea with the door sliding forward. My sister once had 1997 Grand Prix two door. Those doors were massive. If you were near another parked car you had to carefully slide in between the door and the body making your way eventually to the front seat.
My boss owned one, that exact model with custom rims. It's a tank, but it can keep up with a normal Lambo or Porsche. 2 weeks later he got into a T bone collision with a Ford F-150. He ended up plowing through the back of it completely. The Mercedes was still running even though he literally tore the back cab of the other driver's truck. That driver was pretty seriously injured, my boss just had a small cut on his forehead. It wasn't a write off, but my boss sold it to a movie studio for stunt cars. It's easily the most powerful Mercedes I've ever been in and likely ever will be.
Yep! ... 0-60 in 3.8 seconds. (but Doug: "It's not insanely fast like a (Subaru) STI, it just zooms up kind of like a jet". This car absolutely hangs with Lambo's and Porsches.
AMG was founded as a racing engine forge in 1967 under the name AMG Motorenbau und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (AMG Engine Production and Development, Ltd.), by former Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in Burgstall an der Murr, near Stuttgart. The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach (Aufrecht's birth town).
The only thing that usually breaks on this car is the hydraulic suspension with the shock absorbers. And those are expensive to repair. Believe it or not, most other things are solid. But the fuel consumption is huge, especially in crowded European cities. It's a car from a different era that reached the top and we won't see anything like it ever again.
About time someone reviews this car. We've had ours in the family for 10 years, nothin quite like it and its gotten better looking. BUT CANNOT BE OWNED WITHOUT EXTENDED WARRANTIES
I used to work on a few of these and I think the best quirk is that the door latches, soft close assist, seat contours, rear headrests and a few other features are all PHNUEMATICALLY ACTUATED! there's a dual compressor and vacuum pump in the trunk and if you started taking trim panels out from the interior you'd see vacuum lines running to door latches, seats, and headrests. Some wild times diagnosing those cars. Truly wild

John Doe true John Doe!! They are super reliable though! I have the GLC43 AMG SUV and it’s been super reliable
FACTS, the similar suspension problems also occur frequently with the C216.
How do you maintain the ABC Suspension? Just change the fluids?

3:20 Wrong Doug! The Renault Avantime also has that hinge that slides the door to the front because it has even longer doors, and it's a car that I would love to see you review! :)
just wanted to say that, and came out between 2001-2003 so this is not new
It seems like there is always another person thinking just the same thing.
The Avantime also has the pillarless doors, but the windows are larger so the open space is huge - that alongside the massive (by 2002 standards) sunroof really does give you a convertible feel (and of course theres one button to open it all up!)

koks Doug was talking about other CARs, not a renault...
Ah Doug, I can always count on you for some good lunchtime informative entertainment. Love you channel buddy.
Some quirks Doug missed:
The Active Body Control Chassis,
The right mirror button, while being pushed in, activating a parking stance in reverse (that you can program),
the side AND CENTER rear view mirror is bound to the memory seat positions that you have manually adjusted it to, if you press a memory button the center rear view mirror will automagically assume the position it was in when you safed your seat position.
The right mirror in reverse comes in a package I’m not sure if every car gets it.

ABC (ACTIVE BODY CONTROL) is Mercedes-Benz revised version of what's been around for a long long time. Just like a Ford model T and Ford Fiesta are both cars, but one is obviously better at what it does, yet they both do exactly the same thing. Cadillac had this long ago. So did Rolls and almost everyone else. Even Toyota.
ABC was groundbreaking when it came out..... It's backbreaking now that it's aging.

That's great, man!!! Enjoy your beast
Yeah, especially with that tune. When the time comes around, your transmission, and your overall engine will be fucked. Not only that, thus car is an absolute bitch to work and you have to actually pull the engine for certain basic maintenance.
