    I work at a pet store and this is soooo helpful for me to know! I help our animals find forever homes and I try to tell every person considering taking an animal home the extent of care that’s required for them to be happy and healthy and I do everything I can to make sure they are willing to make that commitment to give these little guys the best life possible and that they knows it’s totally their responsibility.
    I think too many people go to a pet store and say, “oh I’ve been wanting a bird for a while.” While they’re browsing around or say one day, “it would be cool to have a lizard.” Etc, and bring an animal into their life having no clue what they’re signing up for.
    I think budgies experience this scenario very often unfortunately. I’m really grateful for all the info you share and everything you do to help our feathered friends and their human flocks 💕 thank you!
    P.S. after fostering our green cheek for 2 weeks we have decided that she is in her forever home :) our life is changed in such a beautiful way and we love our birdie to bits. After watching your videos, reading your guides, and learning everything I can, I say with full confidence that you have been a major part in our learning and decision process to bring this little sweetie into our home. Thank you!!!

      You are awesome cause 95% of pet stores don’t even have workers who like animals 💯

    • @xradelox
      @xradelox 2 года назад +3

      This is a great comment but also kind of upsetting because it just goes to show that pet stores in general do not require their employees to learn what’s best for each species they sell and also how to relay that info to customers. Yet another reason why I wish it was illegal for stores to sell live animals. I mean, what if someone is a car salesman? It would be pretty ridiculous for them to not know a thing about the cars they sell. And yet living beings can be sold to and from complete morons. So thank you for being different and doing your due diligence for these little guys. I’d sneak in comments about adoption to customers if I were you 😜

    • @ziggy5246
      @ziggy5246 2 года назад +2

      @@xradelox yeah I mean, it’s the unfortunate reality. I no longer work at that store because they wouldn’t let me give proper care to the animals. Corporate didn’t give us enough time/payroll to do any proper care and the store (as good as their hearts may be) just couldn’t fight back. I decided I couldn’t live with contributing to their suffering, especially not for capitalism. Believe me, adoption was in nearly every convo I had from fish to small mammals to birds to reptiles and beyond. Also so. Many. People. Who just PICK UP TURTLES AND BRING THEM HOME. wtf?? I was fully transparent with them about how much of a mistake that was and how involved they now have to be. I find that lots of times, the employees do care a lot and eventually get burnt out and soul-sucked into either not caring enough or quitting 😣

    • @xradelox
      @xradelox 2 года назад +2

      I actually work for a shelter but my job is to care for the adoptable cats that are housed at a local pet store and do the adoptions. Most of the staff are very friendly and try their best to care for the animals so I totally understand what you mean. I definitely sneak in adoption and also proper care and supplies any chance I get. I’ll even stop people who are wanting to buy those horrible hamster cages and show them pictures of bin cages and show them RUclipsrs that have great info. Most people go and put the items back 😂 So I do have to be careful but I know each conversation I have can help save lives and make the animals’ lives better! The more people speak up, the more lives are affected 🙌🏻

    I absolutely vouch for all the content I have bought so far from your store! I got your cook book bundle, and it has done miracles. I am a new bird owner, and I realized that one of my lovebirds had a rather... porous beak. I noticed this because I fed them bell peppers, and it made her pale beak discolored. I right away incorporated boiled egg and egg shells into the diet, and it's amazing to see that her beak is looking much more opaque and not semi-translucent. And the discoloration is almost gone too!
    Pro tip:
    If you have a coffee bean grinder, put the shells of your boiled eggs into it and give it a go. You'll get this fine powder, almost like flour, and you can just sprinkle it on top of any food :)

    I’m glad you are showcasing the Omlet geo cage. Owners of this cage are being bullied by the online bird community bc of the myth that owning any cage that’s not square is abuse. (This comes from as you know, those tall circular cages birds have been sold in at fairs etc, where the bars narrow at the top, the birds are put in are too big and can’t turn around… these are always narrow and too small for any bird)
    My friend was bullied and had to make her channel private, even though she only uses those cages for sleep and travel, and also has flight cages.
    People should of course know that the Omlet cage is not meant to be used to permanently cage the bird 24/7 and that they need toys, enrichment, out of cage time, not just to be in that cage 24/7 with no toys and just two swings, which is how the cage is shown in advertisements.
    But when tweaked to the individual birds, the cage is amazing and small birds love it, we like to put a thin colorful jungle ‘red bubble’ tapestry draped over the back and put a lamp on, backlight it, so it glows like a little habitat dome, and they love to go in and preen “in the jungle”
    They also have an aviary style 60” wide cage.
    So I hope you using this cage brings awareness that it’s not a neglectful or abusive thing.

    You say not to put a new budgie from a pet store into his cage right away, but you did not elaborate on when or how this step can be done. I’m enjoying your budgie course!! Thank you.

    Great videos. I saw you have paper rolls under your avairies. I put wire between cage and paper, so birds canty get to the paper and rip it up. Also put plastic under the paper stops the saturation going through to cement floor. Only put plastic if birds can't get to it. X x

    If you guys haven’t bought the tiny toys from BirdTricks yet you really need to check them out. The box of eight in price comparison to a store bought toy is the box for one of decent quality maybe two if they’re crappy. Plus I have three cockatiels and three budgies and before this box only two out of the six played with toys now all six love them so no bs these toys rock.

    Hi Jamie, I recently brought home a sun conure. She has a really bad habit of trying to steal table scraps. She will literally fly into your plate if you're not careful and will fly to you if you do as little as walk into the kitchen. How do I discourage this behavior?
    Edit: she is on a healthy diet of chop every morning and pellets in the evening. She almost always has access to food, as she usually only eats 1/3 of her pellets and eats the rest before breakfast. She's given sun flower seeds throughout the day, so I doubt it's just because she's just hungry.

      Did you already change her diet to a healthier palate? if not you should use this to get her eating healthier. Maybe you should try giving her more food since she seems hungry. to discourage this behavior, I would try showing her that she gets her food in the place you feed her and nowhere else. Try not to avoid letting her have any food that isn't hers and CONSTANTLY show her where she gets food. ( Sorry, I know I'm not an expert but I have my own birds and I wanted to help)

      I don't know if this would work but my immediate guess was what if you kept doing this purposefully with an empty plate and she realized that even if you have a plate you don't have food. Or maybe put something on the plate she doesn't like.
      As for the kitchen thing, maybe put her away/distract her with target training if she knows that? Or maybe set yourself up for success and try putting her in her cage to prevent her from trying to get to you. Or putting a toy in there to occupy herself. Or putting treats (bird ones) in her cage so she likes it there better.

      Don't have her out when you're eating. Put her in her cage with a foraging toy so she never has the chance to steal anything (because once she has, she's been rewarded).

      I suggest putting her away when u eat as well. I know they can be loud (I have a conure too), but you have to break the behavior, it has to be done.
      I went through similar thing with our bird. We used to treat him whenever we eat cuz he does a cute thing begging. So he got into the habit of begging during meal time. But we want to feed him healthier diet so ended up stop giving him treats whenever we eat. The first few days were brutal cuz u know how loud they can get. LOL But u just have to anchor down and push through it to break the behavior. Now he doesn't beg anymore.
      When u try and if ur bird screams, don't treat, don't respond, don't even look at her to give any sorts of reward. Eventually she will get that this behavior does not get me food and eventually stops doing it.
      I'm not an expert, just speaking from my own experience.

Im a little overwhelmed with all the preparation, but she has successfully convinced me to get one for the family. On the topic of blood draws, I worked a a small animal hospital and we would get the little vials meant for birds for kittens so we could get a usable sample off a smaller amount of blood. The vials they have for birds are much smaller than what you would draw for people or dogs. They are 1ml I want to say but I might be remembering wrong it has been years.

    i’ve been researching budgies for 3 years, and everything i learned was honestly so repetitive, but this video went into depth and really explained things very well. is $400-500 enough to start with budgies? i want to rescue two of them from this one lady who is selling them, she says her kids are neglecting them and i think i’m ready.

    Hello Jamie. I love your channel so much. Thank you for the great contents. Do you clip nails of budgies? I noticed two of my budgies (2year old) nails get quite long and I am worried they got stuck on textiles (drapes, my sweater..etc). I do use various perching trees in the cage but still they get long. I had clipped them before but I am unwilling as I do not want them to have bad experience..any experience on this?

    So I’ve been working through the budgie bundle (and watching RUclips budgie vids)….but I’m struggling. My Lilman was found outside. Someone found him and put him on a seed diet for a couple weeks and then rehomed him with me. My problem is that he is uninterested in targeting AND not interested in millet. He likes it but not enough to do anything or move towards it even. I have been trying to convert to your pellets and veggies, but it’s tough. You guys make it look so easy.

    This vid is all too cute....thank you !!!! Did NOT think of the hormonal flux/hampers of mirrors or reflective coating omg..
    My mother is joyspending on prepping to build toys for our birds (we've not yet received them... just planning.) Cage and everything is set. The cage is more of a "bedtime/safe space/"kennel"-in dog idea. Free roamers are what we're hoping to train up to-- key word train, where I come in.
    I work every day (minus Sundays and Mondays) 1pm-1am. So I'm .... The behaviorist and enrichment coach of the humans to carry out what I train hands on to our birds. I'll be present when they're asleep or when they're midday-cycle ... Training humans is my anxiety, not the birds... bonding and training is the best part, most of which I will "get"/introduce to my mother and brother, but I already know these little guys are gonna see me as the human with confidence...and I need to teach that into the humans I have to train...😢
    Hoping to enrich the birds and give them ample spaces (in cage or out) to recluse to if they want it.. I have veterinary training but I know how fragile birds can be- I'm so excited!?
    Our current housepet family member is a RES turtle... Chad.
    Used to have Tai/Titan, the Chinese water dragon - but he passed last year.. our dog we recently let go, due to age/arthritis. (He was also deaf so we communicated in sign and hand gestures/facial expressions)
    I'm ready to talk to a critter and get a verbal back. Angry or not, a verbal response is going to be nice to recognize and learn

      If I can come up with ideas, I'd love to share... I love enrichment in animals... Birds especially!!

    Hi,
    It was a very clever idea to attach a bird perch to a scale. It would resolve that puzzle for us too - how to have bird to go on a scale.
    What brand / type of scale are you using?
    How did you attach a perch to it?
    Interesting, I built a screened porch myself eight years ago - to protect plants from deer and birds. This past summer I was opening our window into a porch and let our budgies to fly there.

    I bought the nutrition system cookbooks- and already have my 4 budgies on a fresh food diet or chop. And have been using it with a bit of their store bought seed to transition them (I will be making them your seed recipe though) my question is 1) can they eat cooked pasta and beans just like bigger birds? 2) is the fresh food for Breakfast, pellets later in the day still the status quo? Just wanna make sure I’m giving them the best chance at the healthiest diet possible!
