  • ATTN: Small birdies!!! I've got a yummy recipe just for you!
Many small bird owners struggle like crazy getting their birds to eat anything BUT a 100% seed diet. If your bird is going to consume seed, make it one worth consuming. Ensure it's organic, and that you are using human grade grains.
    Here's my recipe:
    1/2 lb millet
    1/2 lb quinoa
    1 cup oat groats
    1 cup hemp seed
1/2 cup whole brown flax seed
    1 cup chia seed
    1/2 cup rape seed
    1 cup rolled oats
Watch the video for more tips and ideas on how to use seed as a diet conversion tool to get your bird to try healthier foods. For more parrot nutrition info, check out: birdtricksstore.com/collectio...

@XmenMagnetoAcolytes I think the real problem is not the size but because they are good breeders they are plentiful. That means they are the least expensive and people don't always put the same thought and planning. I get 😤 frustrated when people treat them like they are disposable. They have the most wonderful personalities, each one unique

I was able to convert my bird to pelets, with the help of a mirror on the floor of the cage ;) I saw it on YT somewhere and I put a mirror on the floor and the pelets on the mirror. He is very keen on reflections on ANYTHING and it tempted him right in. Its like when he sees other 'birds' eating it the competative lets eat what they eat and it worked.

We have 1 budgie we bought from a breeder and he loves fresh mix. We ended up getting 2 other budgies as rescue budgies a few months back because the owners were going to just "let them out in the backyard and they can fend for themselves " 😡. We took them in and poor buddies had a rough start and we are trying to get them to a fresh seed mix. They are quite nervous and timid, but this recipe is awesome. Thank you for sharing.

A trick I've used with my cockatiel to get her into veggies is to give her the inside of a bell pepper when I'm cooking. She gets to go to town on the seeds (which is engaging her forging behavior) and she loves spicy so it's a win win 😊 I'll put it in a bowl on top of the fridge so she can be with me in the kitchen and not be dusting all over the food lol

Video request/idea: Please can you show a safe way to open your birds wing? I have a canary and he had a feather growing out sideways, I was worried it was feather cist, and he kept pecking at the wonky feather, in the end he removed the feather himself and one end was thick, so I wanted to check his wing for any cist but afraid of damaging his wing. Bought all the ingredients Friday at my local Bulk Barn, expected a month trying to get him to eat it. Nope, mixed some with egg and his regular seed and he went to town on it. Now his bowl has just your seed mix in it and he's eating it just fine. Went much easier than I expected it to.

Were you able to get whole canola seed there? I am assuming you are in Canada, because I don't think the US has Bulk Barn. I'm in Ontario and have a Bulk Barn nearby. I am finding it hard to find canola seed (rapeseed) in small quantities. There is an agricultural feed store near me that sells it in 50 lb bags, but that is WAY too much.

    • @shellygiles3362

Hi, I went to Bulk Barn a couple of weeks ago. Only one ingredient was organic. I bought them all and 2 budgies I got won't touch it. Think I'll go to a Health Store now to see if I can truly get all organic ingredients. Canola seed is highly concentrated with toxins in Canada.@@joannebutlerster

Feathers showed poor colors.. they didn't seem happy and now... they climb the cage for the fresh food in the morning.. they are singing and talking while eating.. they love the fresh food and the chop gets their beaks covered in the food.. it also makes the spray millet so much more valuable when training and playing with them. I started using this mix as part of my birds diet. They primarily get pellets and veges when i can convince them it's food. Their diet is about 25% seed. I got tired of. Buying the crappy seeds (i.e. Kaytee) so i decided to do your mix. Omg they love it!! It did not take any convincing even with my budgies! One of my tiels came from an abusive home (tail feathers cut off, wings all trimmed including secondaries, kept in cage all day, only attention she got was being yelled at. You know, all of the best stuff to make a terrified bird. Even with the new home, new flock (she was quarantined), new mommy, new cage, new toys (she had like 1 or 2), new perches (again she had like 2..and they were dowels) and she just dove into that food right away! Only took maybe an hour or so for her to acclimate to it. Also told my vet and she loves your mix!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart ♥ and feathers 🦜!

For those of you that live near stores that offer grains in bulk bins, that might also be an option for purchasing small and larger quantities. i live near a health market coop (PCC) so I can get most of those organic ingredients in any quantity. Also I think some Kroger stores have bulk bins in their natural / organic section as well. Just a thought. Maybe you have a local health food store near you. Amazon can be expensive because the "free shipping" isn't really free. They just build it into their price.

He said so many phrases and words, played with every toy possible with me and others, and was cuddly and sweet. We now have 2 GCCs. I have found that our female is finicky. However, if I mix blueberry into anything, she eats it right away.

Happy birthday, Jamie! Thank you so much for the small bird seed mix. And I want to share with you that Keegan, my Bebe parrot, is finally eating your pellets regularly. The reason I'm sharing this is because it has taken 2 years before he decided he really liked them. He's very slow to change in the diet, but he did. I'm so grateful that I was able to buy your food system right as soon as I got him because he was used to the commercial seeds so it took awhile because he was 2 or 2 ½ I think when I got him. But just like you can teach any dog new tricks so can you with birds if you don't give up! I was giving him these different ingredients, but not in your format so I will try it as well. So nostalgic!
The budgie I had as a kid wasn't on a seed diet by sheer luck. It was available to him all day but he happened to only want one type of seed in that entire blend. He ate the vegetables we would eat that day supplemented by the one tolerable seed in the blend, lol. Iceberg lettuce was his most favourite food in the entire world, especially the crunchier white parts. The little guy even preferred it to millet... Weirdo.

    • @mimthyss
      @mimthyss 3 года назад

personally I think harnesses can be great if they're used correctly and not forced on the bird etc. Slowly and kindly introduced so it's not scary, desensitising the bird to the outdoors safely and slowly as well just like you would if you intend to free fly them, etc. Since birds can still be scared and fly away obviously on a harness, but they won't get far.. still, I wonder if they could hurt themselves if they get spooked and yank the harness against themselves because they try to fly . So I think it's best to make sure they're desensitised and such and comfortable with a harness before doing that. Can always take them out in bird carriers instead as well? :3c

    • @boilingsoda
