Budgies or parakeets are the most popular pet birds in the world, but also one of the most neglected. They are cheap and easily purchased by anyone, which means they’re often impulse bought. Budgies are highly intelligent, sensitive beings and they are PARROTS.

And i was able to teach them to step up on the second day!(only one of them cuz the other is *very* shy), its sad how most people get mad and abuse their budgies is because they don't talk and act like the ones on RUclips.
Those people also give up bonding with their budgies when they don't randomly start walking and cuddling with them and allowing to pet them, its so painful to watch😔

Their cage isn't huge, but it isn't tiny either. But still, I feel like I need to upgrade their cage since right now, they never come out of their cage due to not being tamed. Kiwi passed about about a year ago. Blueberry had never been alone, he's always been with another bird. I'm happy to say that I've learned from my mistakes, and thanks to this channel, am able to educate myself! I now still have Bluberry and Lemon and I'm working on taming them!

This video should be required to be watched before chain pet stores are allowed to even sell a budgie. So many kids get heart broken when theirs dies at 3-5 years of age, and cant figure out why when they did everything the store said to, with their small cages, all seed diets, free feeding millet hanging in the cage all day. Yes, buy your bird all mirrors and those cozy hide aways.... I get the feeling they do this on purpose so your birds do die faster, that way they can sell you another much sooner....
I also see this a lot on the parakeet reddit. Impulse bought budgies, what gender is it, what why is it laying on the cage floor, why wont this thing tame in 1 day?!!? Drives me up a wall, just because its a low cost creature doesn't mean you should treat it like dirt :(
I don't get how anyone can ever buy any pet without putting any time or research into keeping it alive and happy for as long as possible!
Love your videos by the way :D

    • @angsfeatheredfriends
      @angsfeatheredfriends 3 года назад +7

@@Aouf1 36 high, 24 long xx deep??? You always want a cage that is longer than higher if you can. Even if parrots enjoy climbing, they naturally fly side to side, not up / down. I personally think cage size goes with how long are they going to be in said cage during the daytime? All day? Get them a bird room. More than half of the day? Get them a giant cage, with a lot of enrichment. Rarely in the cage, but in your company? You can get away with cage minimums for species & amount of them, for a sleeping cage (just make sure they have plenty of room to stretch) You also have to remember vacations, funerals, random insanity, other real life things that may cause you to end up needing to cage the bird.
Depends on the pellet brand to be honest. High quality ones like TOPs and Harrison's are formulated for any sized parrot (depending on its needs). You are of course going to do a lot better with the smaller sized pellets over larger breeds. Then again you get a good deal on larger ones, you can always grind them down smaller as well. Some parrots prefer pellet powder on their veggies instead of pellets whole. Each parrot can be different though. Getting them started on a pellet is the best pellet to use. Afterwards convert to a better quality pellet. A fun pellet flow chart is something like this - Kaytee < Zupreem < Roudybush < Harrison's < TOPs (cheaper the pellet the less healthy it seems to be, when I researched, I myself now use a TOPs / Harrison's mix, but started on zupreem, cause its tiny, and golden colored, just like seeds, made converting crazy easy)

    Parakeets are social birds.
You do need to spend time with them everyday. weekend, week out, all month, all year year after year.
My parakeet, when I was 10 had not a large flight cage (I didn't know) but it didn't matter she was out of her cage almost all day and only ended up in her cage at night time.
Because they are smart they need stimulation and not just toys, so if you start to spend less an less time with at least get another parakeet of more for company, just remember that when your tame or semi-trained bird is put together with others birdies they tend to forget about you.

So I just got a bus give today. And I have tons of questions. I’ve been watching videos about them and I’ve been reading multiple articles, but I’m scared that the budgie won’t like me. I know that since today is the first day I got it (him/her I don’t know the gender) it will be skittish. I’m trying to stay near it just relaxing while giving it space to relax. I’m playing music for it to listen to and I talk to it every now and then. I tried giving it little bits of an apple to see if that would help, but it won’t eat it. I was mostly wondering how do I gain its trust and how often should I care for it for. I’m also wondering if I move the cage to different places in the house would that scare the bird? Should I feed it every day and night or just every day? Should I give it snacks daily like fruit and veggies? And if so how often? I want it to bond to me, but I’m not sure if it will. How long should I wait to see if it will bond to me before I should get another bird to make it comfortable. How long should I let the budgie fly for? (I sound very insensitive for calling the budgie “It,” sorry)

My African Grey parrot recently has been suspected with having a digestive-nervous condition in parrots called PDD caused by avian bornavirus. But interestingly enough, I recently read that Budgies seem to be immune to PDD. We've been building a large 3 storey aviary for my bird in our future home, and it seems budgies are definitely the way to go for our aviary, as we don't have to fear them contracting bornavirus from our African grey parrot (if she does end up having it). Great video!

I just lost my parakeet she was 10 years old and I am devastated. Is 10 years a long life for a parakeet. She always flew around the house and walked around the house like a little puppy. She really slow down over the past year and was having difficulty climbing out of the cage like she had arthritis. She was amazingly intelligent and she only took to me and no one else. My bird would land on my dogs bed and tease them. When I was home I always let her fly around the house. I always kept my heat on 75° all winter long just to keep my bird warm. I am lost without my parakeet and out of respect I am not going to get another one for a while . She was definitely one in a million.

Not many parakeets are as lucky as she was to have lived in a safe, loving, fun, and joyous environment! I’m sure she loved you just as much as you loved her. She may have passed, but the joy and memories she brought to your household are eternal. I’m sure she’s happy right now.❤️

I feel like they are under appreciated because they cost $20 bucks at any pet store. I'm very cute and my sister taught them how to make d'art ng sounds for a prank but now its there favorite sound to make... oh well! But there also potty trained! Except Skylar needs a little help I have 6 budgies and there my first pets there previous owners were cruel and never kept them a name it had always been changing so we chose permanent names they never been to the vet so we took them to the vet never took a bath in 1 and a half year! So that was the first thing we did there cage wasn't small, pretty big but they would need a little bigger one so we did that to, and another thing was they didn't know how to fly and never were let out of there cage there beaks and claws never were cut! Now Skylar, Meadow, Haily, Elliot, William and Kiwi all are. We even gave them nicknames well 2 of them only want them at least Skylar-Julia and Medow-Buncha. Now they all are happier Thanks to you in training and gaining there trust so Thank you!

I have 2 budgies, Tiki and Elliot (Tiki is my profile)(I used to have more), I had a cockatiel named Himalaya (died 😥) and then my first bird was a pineapple type green cheek conure named Ramses! He was so smart, he could speak English so well and literally he could make his own sentences. YOU HAVE AMAZING BIRDIES!

Cages are not a problem seeing that I'm a steel fabricator. Hell our outfit did lemur exhibit for the San Francisco zoo. I've looked at the cost of some of these store bought cages and I choke. Poor craftsman ship and twelve bucks max of material for a hundred and twenty bucks plus too small!!!!that's crazy ! Depending on where you live get in contact with a steel fabricator that does a lot of ADA retrofits . ( ADA. Stands for American with Disabilities Act. ) They do a lot railings and barrier work. Probably better product and less cost.

I'm always so heartbroken when I hear stories about neglected pets, regardless of the kind of animal.
Thanks for your excellent advice. I've never had a bird before. But I'm a terminal student and have been researching. Frankly, their little feet have always kind of freaked me out a bit, but once they warm up to you they really seem quite living. I know that may not be true for all birds which is why I'm doing so much research. I want to make sure that I can give all the care and attention they need to be strong, healthy and happy. Thanks Again! 🕊️💐💃

I bought them the biggest cage possible, my first budgie named mango seemed lonely so I got him (? not too sure about their gender, they're a lutino I believe so) a green budgie friend named papaya. he's been so much happier since then. they're both amazing and I don't regret getting my birds one bit 💙 I'm still working on getting them 100% tame as they usually want to go back to their cage.

I have two budgies myself, and I agree so much. I’ve looked into other people with budgies and it’s really sad how so many people treat them. They keep them as little accessories or play things for children, not as a living creature that deserves care.
I’ve seen so many instances of them being put in tiny cages, with one or two cut perches, maybe one toy and all seed diet. I don’t like judging people on how they keep care of animals but for goodness sake they aren’t just something you get to say you have experience with birds, or something to say you had a “strange pet”.

Do you have any suggestions for different types of toys for them? Just wondering as I know like you said it's easy to get some plastic toys or toys that aren't as interactive and simulating.

My lot love soft wood (balsa, agave..
make sure not coated in chemicals!), shredded paper, finger traps, straws, appropriate sized beads etc. They love things they can chew but also snog lol I buy toy parts and make up my own or I buy them from Natural Bird Product Company in UK.

You can buy some made out of safe wood, paper, crinkle paper, vine, etc. Planet Pleasures and Parrot Joy are nice.

You know how I said I was getting a cockatiel, I found this Indian ring neck but it would be a really big commitment like any other bird but the Indian ring neck needs you like 24 7 unlike a budgie. So I was thinking getting a conure since they are sometimes easy at learning tricks and that what I’m looking for. And also your conure can take it when u go to school and that so that’s what I need. I have done heaps of research on all the birds I’ve mentioned and I’m just hoping I make the right decision. Love you so much 💕

Keira L - heaps of research? Like, how many hours on each species? It sounds like you’re flitting around, erratically , not sure of anything. I spent about 50 hours or more, just on budgies in 2019. And I’m still learning more. I have four budgerigars and they share four different sized cages. I know where my closest avian vet is. I just finished making 2.5 pounds of fresh, organic chop.

And when you mean flitting I don’t rlly know what you mean but I’m not just going from one bird to the other I am trying to see what bird fits right in my life style!

Try and give them the best life you can (vegetables are inexpensive so are branches from the outdoors) depending on which country you live in different branches and flowers are great foraging toys. I am from Australia and I give mine banksias, bottlebrush branches and eucalyptus flowers/branches.
If you feel you are incapable try giving your bird away to someone you know or sell it to someone responsible
Its hard to admit such a thing but I wish you luck for you and your bird and that things get better :)

Me who has trained my budgie in free flight in our netted aviary: This is actually really good advice to tell people!! Budgies are very very intelligent and require as much attention as even a Macaw. Look after your feather babies because they are LIVING THINGS. Take care of them ❤❤❤
