  • Carrauntoohil, a majestic mountain set at the heart of the Macgillicuddy Reeks. As Irelands highest mountain and the fact it's in the beautiful County Kerry, means it boasts some of the most spectacular views throughout the island of Ireland. With Jagged cliffs, mythical cliffs and an ancient presence, this is a really is a place that holds you captivated as you explore its wonders.
    However, make no mistake this mountain is not to be taken lightly as it can be treacherous in bad conditions. The hiking is fantastic, the scenery is stunning and the challenge is tough, this mountain has so much to offer anyone looking for an adventure in the wild southwest of Ireland.
    So for this hike, we decided to mix it up a bit and do a loop going up the less popular O'shea's gully and down the main route the devil's ladder. A full hiking guide is in the video for you to follow.
    This is, of course, the final peak of the 8 peak mountain challenge, you can follow the rest of the adventure on my channel. If you like what you see hit that subscribe button and give us a like.

    Thanks for posting this great video. Very nicely made and I’m glad to find it at this time. Last time I went up via Brother Sheas was in 2019. I’ve been up Carrantouhil once every year for a long time so I’m so looking forward to getting back there this year.

    Another great video. I went up the Devil's ladder route and returned via the zig zags. I'd like to try O'Shea's Gulley; would you consider it more or less dangerous than the Devil's ladder?

    • @MountainMikesAdventures
      @MountainMikesAdventures  4 года назад +1

      I would recommend O'Shea's Gulley and, to be honest, it's not that bad at all other than those few vertical climbs. For me what makes the ladder so tricky is the number of people climbing it.
      I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for the kind comments.

      Cheers, thanks for that. That was the last video I shot with my GoPro and I've had some serious equipment upgrades since then so please feel free to check out some of my latest stuff. I use a OSI Map 1:50,000 and plotted out the route but I'll leave you a link to Mountain Views website, it's a not exactly a modern type of website but it might be what you need.

    the thing about errigal and croagh patrick is they stand alone away from the nearby mountains, which give them a striking prominence over the surrounding land, a bit like the sugar loaf in wicklow, very distinct looking mountains.

    • @MountainMikesAdventures
      @MountainMikesAdventures  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I agree with you but I just get the feeling that at some time a legend was created around the reeks but it's been lost to us.

    • @TrueBlueEG8
      @TrueBlueEG8 3 года назад +1

      @@MountainMikesAdventures I'd imagine older people in Kerry know some myths and legends about the place. Perhaps they predate Christianity? Mount Brandon, not too far away also has a religious connection with Saint Brendan, but I feel these places were just as important when Ireland was a pagan country. Great channel by the way :)

    • @MountainMikesAdventures
      @MountainMikesAdventures  3 года назад +1

      For sure and if I could find them I'd love to talk to them. I had heard about Brandon alright and most of the myths predate Christianity but they got absorbed into it. I'm going to be hiking Tóchar Phádraig in the next few weeks and I'll be talking about the myths surrounding Croagh Patrick and Saint Patrick but I'm not sure when I'll get that video up however. Thank you for the kind words.

      Carrantuohill. Well we're actually planning on doing the 4 peaks so Mweelrea next, then Slieve Donard and Lugnaquilla which I've already done. A few steep bits at Lugnaquilla to the right of the river but it was fine!

      @@davekerrigan4862 wow recovering from surgery and doing the 4 big peaks I admire the determination 👏. I'm not sure, to be honest, that was what I was told by the lovely people in Croins yard. Things can take time in Ireland though and things promised might not materialise for some time. Thanks for the compliment have a watch of my other videos also. I completed The Ireland Way(1000km) this year and am working on the videos as we speak.
