Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 - A Watch Industry Controversy | Watchfinder & Co.

- If you’re familiar with the Swiss watch industry, you’ll know that when a brand-particularly a big, old traditional one-does something small, it’s a pretty big deal. So when a brand does something big, its positively monumental. At the beginning of 2019, Audemars Piguet did something big by releasing the Code 11.59, with the intention of ending its reliance on the iconic Royal Oak. The response, however, was not quite the one they expected.

If I were to ever walk into one of their stores... I would pray that I wouldn't get the narrator of these videos as my sales person.....as I would probably drop my life savings before I left...this man could sell ice cubes to eskimos
Or sell water to a well
Main reason I don't think anybody is going to buy Code 11.59 is it doesn't look iconic. Royal oak looked so different when it came and anybody can tell its royal oak because of its distinct iconic design. This however looks super mainstream like any other watch. Also I find dial's look cheap
Aquanaut looks like shit still everyone buys it.
Vini Van Gogh because it looks a tiny bit like the Nautilus and it says Patek on the dial
@@jose7777777777777777 100%
@@vincent5 but it looks iconic. You can tell it's aquanat as it has Nautilus dial with rubber straps
@@rajanarasimhan i wouldnt call it iconic... You See its an Aquanaut because its ugly, copied by Nautilus and made by Patek
The level of finishing on this movement is insane. This hole problem has an easy fix: use the watch upside down, with the movement facing the outside
Pedro Castro well in that case i‘d rather have a A.Lange.
The 3-hand versions (like this) look fairly awkward, but the chronograph and perpetual calendar are beautiful. Some watches just need dial complexity (imagine how bare a Speedmaster would look without the sub-dials and minute track).
There even is a Speedmaster with the subdial hand, but no subdials printed on. It does look indeed very bare.
That date window at 4.30...….WHY!!!? Makes no sense to me!!
I was thinking the same thing. Isn't that a dive watch thing? I don't quite hate or love this watch, it just confuses me.
Actually I really like this when the Royal Oak, and its subsequent siblings, leave me a bit cold. The dial is beautiful in its simplicity, even when the case is complex, especially from an engineering point of view. So, yeah, I like it.
I fell in love with this watch the first time I seen it
Me too, it's gorgeous!
Let's be honest here:
- movement is top notch
- case is among the best we've seen (hi-tech, complicated shaped)
- the domed/carved glass is also a thing of beauty
The things that ruins it are:
- indices and the numbers
- the hands are so so plain and boring
- AP logo also looks cheap
These can be fixed easily, so the next versions might look a lot better.
I agree. The finishing of the movement is on par with ALS. The sapphire crystal is superb. The case is fantastic. However, the watch face is plain boring and generic. And most people mostly only see the dial.
How is the movement top notch, ap is notorious for poor reliability
Date is at 4 o'clock, for god's sake
Case is ugly. Too tall.
@@tryura One thing I'll never understand is why watch brands, especially high end brands, have the date like that. It looks like shit, either have it at 6 or 3 or just don't have it at all.
7 videos in a row with no patek and Rolex watches glory, glory, hallelujah!
Dont jinx it
Next video will now be about the best investment pieces 🤣
Jk lol but u know what I mean.
So there's hope for a video about Armitron? 😀
You are the one who is bringing them here...
Imagine hating on Patek
You do know that this watch is a big failure when you spend the half of the video talking about the royal oak..
Ekay Ekay No you don’t - this has barely been out for a year. Wait for time to pass and moderate your perspective.
I don’t care what anyone is saying. This watch is gorgeous and bad a$$ all the way. I love it.
@@billdathrill5795 but you won't spend your hard earn money to pay for it...
that makes no sense...
And again you overpass our expectations with another stunning peace of Horology!
Thank you once again @watchfinder&Co.
Never knew I'd get to see a Vincero reviewed on this channel
Abhinay Raikar LMAO 💀💀

Lame...
What do you have against Vincero?? Even David Pakman wears one and markets it during his shows with something like "I never knew you could get a Swiss quality and precision watchmaking in the form of this Vincero for just a couple of hundreds of bucks".. And I'm like.. "Stick to political commentating and continue your journey towards the center of Bernie Sanders' rectum. Save the watch comments for somebody who actually knows what the hell he's talking about"...LOL...
I think its just not something new that has never seen before like the RO and RO offshore, thats its problem
The "entry-level" into Holly Trinty was stolen by VC Fiftysix, there is no doubt about that.
Hate the Swatch shaped case on that. Its a bad blend of old and new imo, that makes it look cheap. Shame because its a very good watch.
I love this watch. The case in itself is beauty, but in brushed pink gold finish with white dial - it is impeccable. The glass with double curve effect, is like a signature for this watch. It gives it a nautical look. A hint of 19th century ship brass compasses, instrument, but distinguished.
This watch is a beauty, and I'd love to own it. With that said, had I not watched the video on the Grand Seiko Snowflake and the Lange Saxonia Thin, I would probably have thought the AP faultless. But after seeing the beautiful finishing of the Grand Seiko and the Lange, my eye started seeing fine details on the AP that didn't quite reach the same level of finish at the other two. The hands, there were some fine specks along the edges that looked like tiny gouges (which would only show up under magnification, but still). Then reversing the watch, I was seeing the same kind of tiny imperfections on a number of the parts. Part of this results from the brushed surface of many parts, the tiny groves creating a break along the edges. Then there were the gears. Look at the Lange in particular. The teeth of the gears were polished! That tiny attention to detail elevates the Lange to another level. Same with the beveled edges of the movement, no specks or other imperfections of any kind under the magnification of the video. The Audemars is an expensive luxury watch, but the Lange really is on top of its game. Still, a beautiful watch though.
You should do a video on one of those beautiful old fashioned bracelet watches. They are so beautiful, I'm surprised this channel has not yet done a video on them, especially given how important they were in the history of watchmaking
The finishing on the watch is outstanding! I also love the case. The lacquer dial is also beautiful. However, I believe the markers and indices are the shortcoming of this watch.
Under the hi-def lens, why does the finishing on this watch seem...off? Like it was made on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon?
His slow and breathy voice together with a dollop with linguistic embellishment sounds like the audiobook of "50 Shades of Grey".
8.58 in the presentation says it all.... "I'm a firm believer in your opinion being own!" We all reflect our own biases and thoughts. I find the 11.59 to be absolutely stunning. I am reminded of a very wise friend who states "It's sophistication is hidden in its simplicity". I read and respect everyone's opinions
on this channel - but should I have the money I would buy this watch to go alongside GS Spring Drive, Omega DV Centre Tourbillon, Kobold LSD. All - in my humble opinion, stunning in their own right. Another wonderful presentation Watchfinder & Co, and thought provoking. Maybe you'll change your mind too! The sophistication is hidden in the simplicity!
Love your videos. Thank you for covering this watch.
personally, i like the dial, especially the date window. if it was a reasonable size (≤38mm) i would love it. but it's enormous.
Elegant but simple, and built to an excellent standard. Do like.
Thanks for your videos, I quite enjoy them. Cheers.
I don't understand why the numbers 5-60 appear around the perimeter. Please explain.
Great video again, good job.
Please a review of Breguet 7787 BR, Accuracy, Value, real manufacture ?
Thanks !!!!!
It would have been interesting to hear a bit about the entirely new movement that AP designed for this watch.
I think it is a beautiful watch. I love the clean classy look.
Well done on finishing this review with the almost subliminal suggestion that the Code 11 is somehow layered and mysterious and will perhaps become the choice of those with subtle minds and refined tastes. I suspect you’ll have quite a few of these pieces second-hand which you’ll need to shift as best you can over the next coup,e of years, so a bit of marketing groundwork now won’t go amiss.
I like it. It's not the fabled "One Watch," but I'd find an occassion or two to wear it.
I really like it. AP’s target audience with this is a very affluent customer after a subtle dress watch with a layer of tech and touches that you can only appreciate with ownership. The quality and finishing is incredible and I would love to spend some time with one because you can only take in this level of design and quality with the piece in your hand and on your wrist. Most of the criticism is because it’s the other end of the design spectrum to the Royal Oak which is what AP wanted to achieve. My dream collection would be the newer 41mm Royal Oak and one of these 👍🏼
It is your first time to fail to sell a watch to me.
Was going to write the same thing

How about a review about the AP royal oak concept?
Is the balance staff showing lateral movement at 5:06? Nice watch though!
Nice video mate
Hello from France 😀 when I see this " model" VS the Grand Seiko...I understand why I love so much the Spring drive Grand Seiko 😍
grand seiko are the same not good design. not much differences.
Great video as usual I don't have a problem with this watch I think it's refreshing that they changed it and I think if this watch stood alone without the previous history that it would be a hit and people would like it people need to look at the watch for what it is not for who made it I think the finishing the proportions in the style or amazing and I think it's a future classic and the line will go on for quite some time
It has a beautiful sense of modern formality. The shape and finish of the sides of the case are beautiful and the skeletonized lugs are devastatingly dressy. The dial is incredible and the numerals look like jewelry. Now look what you’ve done to me.
Yes, yes it does.
Any Roger Dubuis reviews upcoming? Especially the Sympathie or Easy Diver?
I think it’s a beautiful watch. Your display of the watch brings out all of its beauty.
This video proves one thing: the creation of the RO and ROO has been a double-edged sword for the brand. Make another RO and ROO, and expect applause. Make a non-RO or ROO, and expect criticism.
IMO, the watch is attractive. It is clean, classic and sporty.
Is 4K coming to watchfinder soon?
Please, can you get your hands on a Philippe Dufour Simplicity and make a video about it?
I want to see close up shots of this beautiful watch, which is one of the most coveted watches in the world and also has a great story, would make a good video.
Wow! This is one of your best productions. The story, the mindblowing marcro shots and last but in no means least the great Code 11.59. I still think the name is ***** but the watch really seems to deliver up close. The at first glance industrial finish turns out to be an absolute stunner! Also the small design details are really great. If AP would have released such a video during their presentation the public perception would have been much better for sure!
Still looks like every Kickstarter watch
@@marcd7332 from the top down for sure, which is the angle most watches will be viewed from when worn throughout the day. I appreciate the curved crystal, the Octagonal nod to the royal oak in the middle of the case, the skeletonsized lugs, etc...however, you bring up a valid argument, that it all gets lost in the simplistic appearance of its primary viewing angle.
Perhaps this is meant for a specific audience that really just want to lose themselves in the details of what they wear as opposed to projecting a very obvious statement on their wrist?
Whatever the case may be, I believe there will be buyers here. This video definitely highlights this watch in ways AP themselves did not in their own unveiling.
It's a stunning work of art seriously, it's unfussy in as much as the design is form over function.
I hope it is violently expensive and becomes within the top ten of all time given that time.
However I've got a good looking Timex...…. job done.

Great vid thank you
The dial and hands are the main problem areas, but they are also the easiest to re-design and fix with an updated version. It would be nice if they could up the WR to 100m too.
thanks for making a vid on this
The case is amazing, the dials for the most are great with the lacquer. The movements are top notch and the sapphire is beautiful. The problem is the hands and the indicies. Fortunately that's the easiest part to change. This with some minor adjustment is a future classic. Their only watch and the perpetual calendar versions of this watch shows what's possible.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Code 11.59 is a beautiful simple looking dress watch. I think with time the Audemars Piguet fan will learn to love the watch. People were expecting a sport watch design. Dress watches are not as popular as sport watches today.
the sound is off, isn´t it?

Also needs Gruebal Foresey like complications and dial language. Same old complications just isn't going to cut it anymore for an whole new production line in this post modern future
Very nice watch. Keep up the good work.
I like it tho. Looks classic may timeless
I love a lot of things about the watch, nice to have a leather strap, and an absolutely stunning case and movement. That being said, it desperately needs to replace the dial with something better. Once AP produces a better dial, then the watch is gonna be a beast
...and a better hands!
Interesting and enjoyable as always.
I've never really liked the royal oak, too garish, to crass. The 11.59 on the other hand is handsome, subtle, but with enough design to be interesting. I think it looks great. A winner.
Royal Oak is perhaps the best looking sports watch in the world baring the PP Nautilus what planet are you from that 1159 is butt ugly
@@thomasrusso1411 yeah wow Thomas it's almost as if different people like different things or something
I definitely prefer the 11.50 over the royal oak IMHO
@@KAM128 jeah the great 11.50, the 11.59 sucks though.
I think its good that everyone is entitled to their opinion, right or wrong. But the watch is a looser, in the sense that no one buys it, and a looser in the sense that it looks like nothing special.
I would love to see a feature of the Omega DeVille Prestige Power Reserve
Let it be absolutely clear: Code 11:59 is endlessly more beautiful, more stylish, more classy, more elegant, more understated, more exquisite and more exceptional in the detail than any Royal Oak will ever be!
The sound quality is not as good as in previous videos. Cheers.
I really like it. Currently not in the market for a piece in that category, but if I was I’d definitely consider it
Please make a video on the Frédérique Constant Monolithic
It is gorgeous to see it in person. Its like a modern interpretation of the most royal design ever, the most posh car you'd ever own would pair perfectly with this watch with class and style.
"But the Royal Oak was unpopular when it came out"! I'm so sick of this justification. Fact is, most watches that start unpopular stay unpopular. The Royal Oak is an exception. But the fact remains true for most.
Brad Le An example?
Agreed.
@@centrallyintelligentagency Four come to mind: Frank Mueller Crazy Hour. Kinda started popular, but nobody wants it now. Panerai 318 "London Bridge" was hated once people saw the movement early on. Patek Phillippe Neptune. Tried to be based off the Nautilus cause it's made of steel but came out pretty ugly. Graff Hallucination. Trust me its best not to see the watch itself. You'll understand.
I kinda disagree.. these high end brands have done it before. The Royal Oak is one, but nautilus was unpopular when it launched. So was the aquanaut. Best example might be the Rolex Daytona. They were given away for free when you bought a Rolex once and look at them now. Unpopular pieces make rare once...
Brad Le Brad Le I see the point about the Neptune - sure. The moonphase version of it is very pretty, however. The Franck Muller started popular as you conceded - so that point is relatively moot. The Hallucination may not be visually appealing, but I doubt that that was the problem. It’s sitting at $55,000,000 which I would be inclined to call prohibitive. An 11.59 is not. Also, it’s the Panerai Brooklyn Bridge - and it was set to be a scandal. Priced lower than a 005 and with a terrible movement, of course it was bound to fail - not a great example. This 11.59 is disregarded for no compelling reason I have yet to hear - it is technically a marvel, and it insanely elegant in the minute repeater & perpetual calendar guise, but my favourite is the standard time-only in black and rose gold.
A final counter to any opposition - until you have genuinely handled the piece and can appropriately speak to that experience, you have no business in judging the watch as bad, trash, or bound to be a flop. You haven’t formed an evidence based argument for why the watch is bad. Personally, I thought I would despise the Nautilus, since it was steel (for that price) and I thought it was garbage prior to handling it. Completely contrary to my ignorant opinion, it felt immensely qualitative and had a beautiful shine to its components and a very pleasant heft - not to mention the movement.
Case closed.
I’m not sure anyone else has mentioned it, but this 11:59 is a copy of the Mont Blanc Timewalker line. There details that have been changed on the AP, but the basic design looks too close to not call it out. Thanks for the video, great content as usual.
The Code 11.59 is actually great in terms of case design, finishing and the dedicated new movement. All it takes is improving the dial design of some models.
if it was a 38mm and 8mm thick andd had a screw down crown , I would be shopping for one tomorrow ,,, looks like it will still be a PP5107p for me
Great video, but you missed a trick !!!

I love it. I bought one, the smoked blue 3-hander on rose gold. I already have a blue 15500, but it is not in competition with it. It's a different beast.

A lot of people say that the dial is too simple. I disagree, there's a lot going inside of it, and the proportion of the components inside the dial is the main culprit of somewhat disastrous execution. However, looking it at in flesh makes a lot of a difference.
This is a 4/5 watch.
