I just heard from Sirui that they are working next on the 35MM version of this anamorphic lens! More lenses to follow still if you want to get this or any of their future lenses for the discounted price then make sure you are on the pre-order list.
Tom Antos thanks was tempted to order it. The reason I didn’t was because I was deciding if I should leave Sony for Nikon which I use for photography and love the Z feel more than Sony or Fuji for video. The Fuji has nicer color and better internal recording. Ideal camera for this is xt3 with ibis to have a small portable shooting tool.
now that sounds really interesting, Tom! thanks for the info! i am wondering if a 2x version would be possible or if a fullframe version would create even better images...anyways great stuff. cheers
Guys they won’t be bringing out an EF version anytime soon. The EF mount has a much bigger flange distance meaning the current design will not work, in order for it to work they would have to add an additional glass element that would likely mean redesigning the whole lens and raising the price up considerably. That’s the beauty of the micro four thirds, E- mount and RF mount etc as it’s much easier to design and adapt lenses to it.
So this is a budget anamorphic lens from a price perspective. But compared to other, much more expensive anamorphic lenses , is the image quality also budget? Would be interesting to see a BMPC4k with a Sirui as "referens" compared to several other anamorphic solutions going up the price scale. From SLR Magic adapters via Vazen 40mm all the way up to Cooke, Panavision and Zeiss. Especially Zeiss feels like a "modern" alternative with subtle flares and like zero distorsion. I'm dreaming, I know...Thanks Tom
The bokeh and image compression looks a bit like the Helios 44-2 lens. That swirly bokeh, during the scene with your wife in front of that Xmas tree. This is such an awesome lens, I prefer the sharpness of it too. And as you said you can always add a softening filter. While adding sharpness in post, introduces noise, etc. Awesome review Tom! Thanks, and God bless!
Tom, have you ever done a video that shows how you got to where you are today... How you learned to produce your content. I started a youtube channel and find these videos very helpful. Congrats on your success. I got to 100 subs, now setting my sites on 1000, but I am focused on delivering good content. Cheers.
Congrats on your first RUclips success. Keep on doing good videos and before you know it you'll be RUclips famous. I never did a video about how I started on RUclips because it's not very interesting. I never intended to do RUclips videos or run a youtube channel. It all started by accident and it still is a thing I do on the side of my regular work.
@@TomAntos Thank you Tom. I continue to trend up so that says I am doing something right ;) You'd be surprised at how interested people are in what you might consider mundane. For us, there are so many elements. It's daunting. What might be mundane for you, is a revelation for us.
Thanks for sharing this information. I love anamorphic...hopefully they'll come out with a 2x soon. For now I'll settle for 1.33, especially at this price!
I'm confused. When these companies launch a single anamorphic lens like this, don't they know almost all filmmakers would need at least three such lenses; one wide, one approximately normal, one or two long lenses? What do we do? Look for different brands? Is there a good anamorphic that can be combined with other lenses? PS. Your videos on filmmaking are THE best on the internet. Thanks so much.
This lens is designed for mirrorless cameras of various mounts with short flange distances. It is easy to adapt a lens designed for dSLR cameras to mirrorless cameras but the reverse can't be happens without loosing focus to infinity. I doubt if an Canon EF mount or Nikon F mount versions will appear. After all with the mirrorless revolution the EF and F mount are becoming obsolete.
This might fit the bill for my GH5 and G85 the best thing is the price is right. I see you were in my part of the woods Wash DC during the holiday season. Thanks Tom! I'm kind of glad there is no EF mount version, because I vowed to not buy any new gear in 2020! lol But I started watching the video and had my trembling finger hovering over the BACK IT button until I heard there was no EF mount. (all my cameras use either EF, EF-M, or F)
6:50 THANK YOU Tom ! If Sirui can bring an EF Mount version i'll buy it STRAIGHT AWAY to use it with my bmdpcc6k. For that particular cam we desperately are in need for an anamorphic lens, in this price segment!
Arne van der Heijden they won’t bring out an EF version because of the flange distance, they would have to redesign the whole optical part of the lens to make it work and would cost much more. They will probably bring out an RF version though. That’s why I like the M/43 system as it’s so easily adaptable
@@98JamesNixon thanks for your response! The bmdpcc6k sports an anamorphic mode but up until now it's useless, unfortunately, since there a no EF Mount anamorphic lenses for it :-( I think i need to get the M/43 4K model in combination with, for example, this Sirui lens.
Thanks Tom! Great lens! I prefer a little MORE squished ovals bokeh, the look of that "classic" anamorphic from the '70s and '80s, but this lens is incredibly sharp!
Tom, maybe you will know the deal. Can you easily incorporate anamorphic footage to ordinary timeline project? I’m considering purchasing BMCC with Suiri but not sure if this will work for my purpose. I’m considering to use just some clips shot with anamorphic, but most with ordinary look/file. Wonder if this would work. Much appreciated for all suggestions and comments. Merry Christmas 🎄
Great video Tom, I have subscribed to your channel, I recently bought the Sirui 35mm for my Sony camera what setting did you use on your 6400? If you don’t mind sharing as at the minute I’m still trying to find the ideal setting for my camera to use with this lense, is worth to mention that I’ll be shooting car content videos, speed and slow motion. Thank you and looking forward to your next video. Alex
Thanks for the video @Tom Antos ! What would you recommend for a budget film production. I had my eyes on the Rokinon Xeen 35mm and stumbled upon your video. Would this lens be a better bet to get that cinematic look or should I go with the Xeen 35mm?
Hey Tom, first of all, I love all of your work and contribution to the community. I hate that one of my first comments may seem like a criticism, but it's really not. I am just curious why the example shots you showed seemed so blurry compared to all of your other work? Is this camera difficult to find focus on? I have seen other people's examples and I noticed the same thing. But then I see some others and it is extremely sharp. Do you know why this might be? Thanks!
Awesome info. Im definitely going in this direction. Any ideas how to add ND filters to this? I need ND and this lens for a beach shoot in a lot of sun.
Tom I have a question: is the 50mm a 100mm on the BMPCC4K? (Crop factor). I’m other worlds if you frame up a SonyE version (1.6X crop) of the lens compared to the 2X crop of the BMPCC4K (M4/3 lens version) how much are you losing in FOV? Should we get a speedbooster for this when using the BMPCC4K? Thank you. Matt
He already said the optical structures are the same, so yes, it's 100mm equivalent. Also you can't use speedbooster because both versions are for mirrorless, the flange is too short for a speedbooster.
Is there an EF mount version? (For the Pocket 6k of course.) :P EDIT: OK, good, you're wanting one too. I hadn't seen much of the video yet haha. Also, here's a question for Tom or anyone else... starting out, assuming I can't go anamorphic (pocket 6k, and no mountain of gold), should I get two or three prime lenses (on the cheap), or maybe like one zoom lens? Probably foolish, but I feel like zooming is underrated... nah, I'll go prime. Thanks, me.
thank you for this comparison. What is your perception on the m4/3 vs APSC versions of this camera? Does the APSC have an advantage in terms of quality/bokeh/field of view? One thing that I don't understand is that these lenses are optically the same for m4/3 and APSC but the final image seems the same, same shape, no cropping. When using a 50mm on APSC and m4/3 the field of view does not change?
8:40 I don't think they would produce same kind of image if they have identical optical structures. The crop factor has to be tighter on m43 and field of view will be narrower. And you can see in the footage shot on the m43 has less character and the image is pretty close to normal lens with black bars.
... thx for sharing the video! 👍🏻 So is there no crop-factor to multiplie for apsc and mft like other lenses? the apsc- and mft-versions have the same angle of view - like 50 mm on FF? 🤔
Great video as usual Tom. Thank you. I just wish there would be 18, 40 and 85 mm version. Probably will be in the future, but it kinda complicates things when you shoot one lens anamorphic and than you have swap for different focal lengths which is not anamorphic anymore. Still, great effort from Sirui.
Tom Antos hahaha maybe I will. It is a “what if” investment. I was using Sony full frame, now I switched to Fuji xt3 and love it to pieces. Will I stay with apsc or not? But I am considering it. Your video is great support, because those Kickstarter promoting videos are always so...sketchy. Thanks Tom.
Hello Tom, thanks for sharing this video. Could you pls share your ideas on using the GH5s in-camera anamorphic desqueeze feature with this lens. How would the frame look in the viewfinder on GH5s with anamorphic desqueeze feature on and what all a GH5s user needs to keep in mind in order to shoot with this lens competently. Thanks
Hello Tom! Thanks for the review! Is it possible to use one of these with an ef mount? Which adaptator can be used in this case? Thank you for your help!
Yeah, an EF version where the rear elements intrude insidethe camera mount. That's not a good idea. Instead I want the mount kit to swap out E-Mount and MFT mounts
But no EF mount version? Is there an adapter you can buy to mount on a Canon? By the way, the music you used is perfect. It matched the video of the beautiful woman, who apparently is your wife (according to another comment). The lens did her justice! In any case, if there's an EF mount version, please let us know!
@Tom Antos A really great video. Will this work with my original BMPCC, since it has a 16:9 sensor, even if it is S16? What would be the effective FOV? Thanks.
It should work with the original bmpcc as long as it accepts m43 lenses. As for FOV just mulitply the 50mm. Actually since this is an anamorphic lens with 33% wider FOV horizontally then its more like putting a FOV equivalent 37.5mm lens
Not really. They made this for mirrorless APS-C or smaller crop sensor cameras. Designing it for DSLR, would've made it a bigger/heavier lens than it had to be. This is really targeted at the enthusiasts/indie filmmakers that shoot on cameras like the Panasonic GH5/BMPCC (and Fujifilm/Sony APS-C). Those who can't really afford $4k+ cinema cameras and similarly priced Atlas Lens Co./Vazen/etc lenses and don't want to mess around with vintage anamorphic glass and all the hassle with taking lenses, adapters, diopters and dual focusing, etc. Plus, they've just launched their mirrorless electronic gimbal stabilizer P1. This can work with that. Of course I do get that there's a lot of cameras with native EF mount. And that EF mount virtually adapts to anything with adapters. But that's perhaps something for another time.
any chance you might get your hands on one of the newer cine cams from Kinefinity? Mavo LF? ive bookmarked every single video i could find about them on here and vimeo. i love what they are doing but we have zero distributors that i know of in america yet so its a bit of a risk to own one here
yup that is one of the reasons why I am still hesitant on getting the Kinefinity cameras. Their distribution and return / repair policy is very sketchy. If their cameras were competing in price to the BM Pocket Cameras or the Z Cam E2 then I would be willing to take that risk, bu not when their full camera rig is over $10K.
Could you mix the videos of the lenses without having a noticable difference in the look, so for ex. if you shoot with the Sirui anamorphic lens and a normal spherical lens and you want to edit both clips into one video.
Sure, it just depends what the motivation is. But look at Scott Pilgrim. That's a 1.85 movie, but they shot with a range of lenses, including Anamorphic, they did a 1.85 pull from the 2.39 anamorphic image. You can really do anything.
It would be cool if most commercials where I live weren't filmed anamorphic. For me anamorphic is not so a "cinematic" look but an "advertisement" look
Can you try it with the bmpcc4k? Or will Sirui only let you use Zcam? It’s weird they only specifically mention zcam, Panasonic and Olympus in regards to m43 mount
I did try it with the BMPCC4K. Half of the shots I show in this video are actually done on the Pocket 4K. Check the text in the top left corner of the video where I put what camera it was shot on.
Thanks for your video, Tom! As Indiegogo backer #97 I went with the E-mount over MFT-mount (for my BMPCC4K), just to have the IBIS of the Sony cameras. On the other hand BMPCC4K has the better codec and a build-in desqueeze function, which would make it easier to focus. So I am unsure, if I should ask Sirui to change my order. Do you have any thoughts on that? Thanks!
yes in time... they are a new company just started with their first lens. BTW You can make a film with just 1 lens and even win an Oscar, take a look at this: tomantosfilms.com/4104/film-shoot-without-lights/
@@TomAntos I missed this reply before. Wow you sold me. It says two lenses, but still. I am thinking, how about using the one anamorphic, but simulate a second lens by enlarging selected shots, say 130%. Howwould that work? Would the lens flares and other artefacts look enlarged?
Agreed. To me the defining and most important optical artifact of anamorphic is the oval bokeh, and 1.33 anas are just too subtle to bother with. Lens flares can be easily and convincingly added in post, so that’s a less compelling reason to get one. I hope Siriu will consider making a 2x version.

Hi Tom, I ordered this lens from Indiegogo this week. I probably won't receive it until February. By buying the lens now, I paid 550 &. When it comes out for sale in France, where I live, it will retail for 700&. I urge anybody interested in the lens to order quickly and save some money. Cheers to you and to your lovely model and wife.
SIRUI 50mm F1.8 anamorphic lens produces a 2.4:1 widescreen video with a 33% increase of the horizontal field of view to achieve a FOV equivalent to an APS-C 37.5mm lens.
@@TomAntos thanks! I understand the math. But that's APS-C which is about 55 in FF which is how I see things as a photographer-first . A 30-35/1.8 APS-C or 1.4 will give us around 33-40mm FOV on a FF which for me is a better angle. Ultimately it be nice if they created a range of these lenses: 50/1.8 35/1.8 and 28/1.8
@@photojournalists its a 50mm vertically and 37.5mm horizontally FOV period. The APS-C is just how much of a sensor it can cover... has nothing to do with the FOV. So it can cover sensors that are APS-C and smaller. Will not work on a full frame sensor. As far as FOV... since horizontally it's 37.5mm just think of how any other 37mm lens or something like a 35mm looks on your camera and you will know how wide you can go with this lens. There is no need to convert from full frame to apsc or m43 etc. For example a 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens doesn't matter what camera it's on. The sensor might crop in more or less on the center of that lens but it still doesn't change the look of the DOF , distortions etc of that lens. All that changes is how much of the glass you can see on that camera.
Exterior images look too soft. Won't buy. I second someone else's suggestion for a 2x lens! As long as it's sharp. Also needs an L mount for Leica, Panasonic, & Sigma cameras.
Lens makes some stunning images. But the build quality is trash. Just because it's metal, doesn't mean anything. The lens literally fell apart in my hands during a normal indoor shoot. Noticed it was a little loose and then the same day the front element up to the aperture ring slid off, while the screws that apparently came loose were magnetized to the sensor on my X-H1 scratching a brand new sensor! WTF!? There customer service department is apparently non-existent. No response to my service request whatsoever. Bought this preorder too! #siruisucks #sirui #siruianamorphic #BUDGETlens
it just doesnt have enough anamorphic characteristics too it man, need more distortion need more oval bokeh? lens flares is just one characteristic cmon sirui
Hmm... some of the characteristics are cool, and maybe worth it overall, but with anamorphic... the logical side of my brain says why!? If the target screen is a home TV, isn't it just kind of annoying to not have the whole TV filled? Can't you get the same shot with a normal lens, but have the top and and bottom filled? Maybe by getting a bit farther away from the subject? I understand that you're technically cheating by getting more image than the size of your sensor would normally allow, but... since it's only wider... I don't know, I'm not sure I like the cropped ultra wide cinematic look enough. Makes a lot more sense on an ultra wide screen for sure... OK just rambling. Anyone want to convince me I'm not giving anamorphic enough credit? Its just wider right? With some weird lens flares and bokeh (which other lenses have as well). What's makes it look good to you? (I'm super tired, so no editing...) EDIT: I think I already saw Tom's video about shooting anamorphic quite awhile ago... but maybe he makes a case for it that I forgot about or something. EDIT 2: OK I'm reading some more stuff about anamorphic... I remain unconvinced but curious enough to try it. Wider field of view IS pretty enticing... (even if your whole image ultimately has to be smaller to display it... grumble grumble...)
I just heard from Sirui that they are working next on the 35MM version of this anamorphic lens! More lenses to follow still if you want to get this or any of their future lenses for the discounted price then make sure you are on the pre-order list.

@@TomAntos Yes for me i have the Z6 with atomos ninja V, insane... i need this lens on Z-mount (nikon full frame) or F-mount (nikon old mount)
Nice. And love the hat Tom 👍
You have a beautiful wife - she makes any lenses looks good. It's a cheat!
Hello Tom! Thanks for the review! Is it possible to use one of these with an ef mount? Which adaptator can be used in this case? Thank you for your help!
i'll wait for 35mm
More than happy with this lens and in X mount ! The only complain is .. that I need to wait february to shoot with it.. :p lol
Is there anyway possible to use this anamorphic lens on my mini URSA pro?
Tom, do you know if they plan to release 2x anamorphic lens art some point?
No idea. Sorry
Hey Boss, If I'm gonna buy M4/3 version for my GH5S it's gonna be 100 mm for me?
Thank you sir!
I’m considering this lens for photography, I’m just wondering how I would desqueeze my photos on the iPad Pro.
simple just scale them horizontally by 33%
Yeah, an EF version where the rear elements intrude insidethe camera mount. That's not a good idea.
Instead I want the mount kit to swap out E-Mount and MFT mounts
Please review s1h
Hi Tom. So if it’s like 37.5mm then does that mean that it’s 75 mm on the BMPCC4K?
What mm equivalent will this be for M43?
for GH5s it should be (50x1.9)/1.33 ~ 72mm FF equivalent (horizontal FOV)
No EF mount version?
nope... that's what I am hoping they can do next
Tom Antos very weird it wasnt in original lineup
@@TomAntos We are on the same page then. Thanks for taking the time to reply! I appreciate what you do here.
Christopher Schneider hmm ok cool. I cant wait to test out one of the Sirui anamorphics
Nice hat, Tom.
Thanks!
Will this give me "5.3k" on my 4k camera (a6300)? Will it be accepted as a valid 4.6k format (downsized)?
Any idea what the FOV is on the P4K?
Tom it EF Mount is available will it work with Speedbooster ?
It would but there is no canon ef mount unfortunately
It would be cool if most commercials where I live weren't filmed anamorphic. For me anamorphic is not so a "cinematic" look but an "advertisement" look
How you shoot on the BMPCC 4k?
Can you try it with the bmpcc4k? Or will Sirui only let you use Zcam? It’s weird they only specifically mention zcam, Panasonic and Olympus in regards to m43 mount
I did try it with the BMPCC4K. Half of the shots I show in this video are actually done on the Pocket 4K. Check the text in the top left corner of the video where I put what camera it was shot on.
@@TomAntos Totally missed that. Looks great thanks Tom
Too bad that I cannot utilize it with my A7SII in 4K, because there is no option for APS-C mode in 4K :(
There is a work around, while you cant go into APSC mode in 4k, you can crop into a 1.6 crop on the a7sii with Clear image Zoom.
Does anyone think an EF mount is possible for Sirui? Would love one to use on my BMPCC6k.
Thanks!
Get it in MFT mount then adapt to E Mount!
@@SoundSpeeding Exactly...
hello is it possible to remove the black barre?for have normal image with the mft mount thanks,my gear it's gh5
You can zoom in digitally if you want to avoid that aspect ratio

50mm for MFT is too much :( wish they were 25mm
This looks great, but how can we make movies with only a 50mm? Why don't theymay, say, one 26mm, one 50mm, and one 80mm, at least?
yes in time... they are a new company just started with their first lens. BTW You can make a film with just 1 lens and even win an Oscar, take a look at this: tomantosfilms.com/4104/film-shoot-without-lights/
@@TomAntos Thanks, Tom, I'll check it out.
@@TomAntos I missed this reply before. Wow you sold me. It says two lenses, but still. I am thinking, how about using the one anamorphic, but simulate a second lens by enlarging selected shots, say 130%. Howwould that work? Would the lens flares and other artefacts look enlarged?
@@TomAntos Me again. Is there any way this anamorphic could be combined with something that would make it wider?
The music is kinda sad...
JP Filmproductions the sound of my bank account in constant peril. Lol
He couldn't find one model to use except Latitia?
If it ain’t 2x.... my wallet ain’t coming out.
Agreed. To me the defining and most important optical artifact of anamorphic is the oval bokeh, and 1.33 anas are just too subtle to bother with. Lens flares can be easily and convincingly added in post, so that’s a less compelling reason to get one. I hope Siriu will consider making a 2x version.
That's what she said
@@TomAntos that's all you can come up with? lol
@@welldone8235 unfortunately yes... Im busy working on a film. When I have more time I'll try to think of a better comeback. 😉

I wish it was a bit wider, 35/1.8
SIRUI 50mm F1.8 anamorphic lens produces a 2.4:1 widescreen video with a 33% increase of the horizontal field of view to achieve a FOV equivalent to an APS-C 37.5mm lens.
@@TomAntos thanks! I understand the math. But that's APS-C which is about 55 in FF which is how I see things as a photographer-first .
A 30-35/1.8 APS-C or 1.4 will give us around 33-40mm FOV on a FF which for me is a better angle. Ultimately it be nice if they created a range of these lenses:
50/1.8 35/1.8 and 28/1.8
@@photojournalists its a 50mm vertically and 37.5mm horizontally FOV period.
Hey Tom love your videos, I have a long feature film that I’m trying to shoot, and it would be great if you can DP the project.. my pleasure.
Shame there is no EF version.
2nd here in tha comment
Lens makes some stunning images. But the build quality is trash. Just because it's metal, doesn't mean anything. The lens literally fell apart in my hands during a normal indoor shoot. Noticed it was a little loose and then the same day the front element up to the aperture ring slid off, while the screws that apparently came loose were magnetized to the sensor on my X-H1 scratching a brand new sensor! WTF!? There customer service department is apparently non-existent. No response to my service request whatsoever. Bought this preorder too! #siruisucks #sirui #siruianamorphic #BUDGETlens
I also haven't been able to get a hold of them for over a month. VERY poor customer service. Emails, voice message, and no reply. Be aware!!
it just doesnt have enough anamorphic characteristics too it man, need more distortion need more oval bokeh? lens flares is just one characteristic cmon sirui
Hmm... some of the characteristics are cool, and maybe worth it overall, but with anamorphic... the logical side of my brain says why!? (I'm super tired, so no editing...)
EDIT: I think I already saw Tom's video about shooting anamorphic quite awhile ago... but maybe he makes a case for it that I forgot about or something.
EDIT 2: OK I'm reading some more stuff about anamorphic... I remain unconvinced but curious enough to try it. Wider field of view IS pretty enticing... (even if your whole image ultimately has to be smaller to display it... grumble grumble...)
