It’s so interesting how the younger generations view these games and how much the zeitgeist has changed around older fighting games as a whole. Like sure there were killers back in the day too but VHS is literally how we distributed all video in the 90s, the internet wasn’t sophisticated or commercially viable enough for people to share information on combos and infinites. We’d all get magazines and there were sections in the back of game manuals to write down notes and memos. And tbh most people didn’t have the console releases, we mostly opted to blow all our quarters at the arcades and roller rinks. MvC1 and MvC2 cabinets were EVERYWHERE though, and MvC2 on playstation and dreamcast were highly sought after when they dropped. Up until youtube popped off it was all locals and couch nights, and the best player you were aware of was the one killer in your state who showed up to everything who either played everyday cuz his dad owned the arcade or was trained by his older brother who bodied him every weekend.
For those who didn't get what max ment when he mentioned Pokemon when was talking about the flashing there's an episode of Pokemon that been banned called electric soldier porygon where kids in Japan wear suffered seizures and some were even hospitalized which resulted in the episode getting banned
And of course the freaking polygonal computer duck gets blamed for the whole thing instead of the beloved mascot rodent. Porygon and its evos are some of my faves and it’s a shame it will never be allowed to get great anime attention because it’ll forever be associated with the controversy.

But even bigger because internet streaming wasn't a thing yet to steal its thunder; we didn't even have cable TV-based Video On Demand yet.
recordable vhs tapes have a tab that is recognized by the VCR as open or closed. this helped prevent you from mistakenly recording on to your commercial tapes. of course you still could, you would just have to cover the hole on the tape. u could also snap open the tab on a recorded tape to make sure not to record on to that one. Some companies released their tapes with the tab still on so you had to be mindful to remove it or not record on it. I think Goodtimes released stuff like that. they were a popular budget release company many times they wouldnt even print a unique label, they would slap on a generic label with lines as a space to write the name of the title you purchased lol so yeah it was possible but not likely, i will probably never have to share this info ever again so i figured id share

I'm sure I've said this before, but I totally forgot how badass the arcade version of X-Men vs Street Fighter was. I've probably enjoyed playing Xmen vs SF just as much as MVC 1 and 2.
This honestly really bring back a lot of memories, both on the X-men vs Street fighters and on seeing a VHS. Back in the days, there were nothing on the internet really, I still remember using dial up either 14.4 or 28.8k. So to learn combos like is only a few ways, happened to see someone playing with combos and trying to steal learning it, reading on game magazine or lastly which very rare, happened to stumbler on it by chance. I still remember Wolverine infinite combo is most popular to do at the Arcade as his damage is not very high and easily will reach 99 combo count as that is the max even if the combo continues beyond it. And doing that is normally to show off the skill of the player.
Remember playing this as kid and not thinking sabretooth was oppressive but comic accurate, he was nice to birdy in-game tho, but only because shes his fireball 😂

And a study proved that all of the subsequent reports were, in fact, caused by the NEWS reporting the issue. Basically, the parents took their kids to the hospital after hearing the news with all sorts of symptoms BUT epilepsy. The telltale sign is that pretty much all reported cases happened at different times depending on where in Japan the kids lived because all of them happened after local media outlets reported the news. In layman's terms, it was a notable case of fake news induced mass hysteria. Still, it made so much noise that anime and games are still forced, to this day, to have dimmed lights in certain flashy scenes and not have any strobe effect. A prime example of the power of media.
Hearing about how much it takes to be good at fighting games is why I enjoy hearing about the community and the culture more than I do playing the games themselves (although I did get quite a few hours out of SF6 before I fell off)

Also to think that this was in a time, where no home console ports or emulation existed and all the training came literally from spending tens of thousands of yen in the arcade.
I wholeheartedly recommend bas on YT/Twitch. He streams dedicated fighting games direct from a Japanese arcade and XvsSF is one of the weekly games. It's so cool to see 20+ years later people still playing this at the highest level on raw ass arcade hardware.

man, it was pay to win. my brother ran our arcade in the 90s so we had free tokens and he always stocked all the newest CPS2 fighters and also every other fighting game there was. That fighting game corner kept the arcade afloat and there was a lot of regional talent filtering through there and then competing at the regional tournaments at Good Times in Somerville (RIP). These games defined what consoles we purchased (Sega, obv) and we always had the arcade sticks and top floor triple decker apartment tournaments with 8-10 people on a weekly basis and then we'd do monthly tournaments at the arcade and then the regionals. You started to see this level of skill that was unsurpassable without full commitment. The guys who were recording themselves on videocassette or bringing modded CPS-2 boards with video interrupts so they could capture at board source for this kind of VHS. Now you can just fire up a RUclipsr or a Twitch stream and watch that level on display. The grind is harsh for the dudes who just wanna mash a few hours a week :(
Youngins these days have it eeeeaassssyyyy. Back in the days it really was P2W. Wanna be good in the game? Better throw your lifesavings into the arcade machine! You basically have to grind there whole day in the arcade to be marginally good, or at least going back to the arcade consistently every day.
I still remember around 2003 i was only 7 going to the mall where mvc2 was always there the gate keepers were some of the coolest dudes i used to hang with eventually my mom let me hang with them when i was 9 and we'd just play mvc2 all day until my mom picked me up i remember around 12 entering my first tournament and getting 6th place meanwhile my friends got 2nd and third i ended up winning a 50 dollar gift card to gamestop where i saved up that year and bought a ps3

The fact Max found a VHS with stuff like this makes it worth buying, and such good quality!
Couple that with the fact its VHS and i get flashbacks to the 90's and how much i watched movies on that medium.

man, it was pay to win. my brother ran our arcade in the 90s so we had free tokens and he always stocked all the newest CPS2 fighters and also every other fighting game there was. That fighting game corner kept the arcade afloat and there was a lot of regional talent filtering through there and then competing at the regional tournaments at Good Times in Somerville (RIP). These games defined what consoles we purchased (Sega, obv) and we always had the arcade sticks and top floor triple decker apartment tournaments with 8-10 people on a weekly basis and then we'd do monthly tournaments at the arcade and then the regionals. You started to see this level of skill that was unsurpassable without full commitment. The guys who were recording themselves on videocassette or bringing modded CPS-2 boards with video interrupts so they could capture at board source for this kind of VHS. Now you can just fire up a RUclipsr or a Twitch stream and watch that level on display. The grind is harsh for the dudes who just wanna mash a few hours a week :(
Youngins these days have it eeeeaassssyyyy. Back in the days it really was P2W. Wanna be good in the game? Better throw your lifesavings into the arcade machine! You basically have to grind there whole day in the arcade to be marginally good, or at least going back to the arcade consistently every day.

I still remember around 2003 i was only 7 going to the mall where mvc2 was always there the gate keepers were some of the coolest dudes i used to hang with eventually my mom let me hang with them when i was 9 and we'd just play mvc2 all day until my mom picked me up i remember around 12 entering my first tournament and getting 6th place meanwhile my friends got 2nd and third i ended up winning a 50 dollar gift card to gamestop where i saved up that year and bought a ps3
