100 percent this. I only worked one place that was healthy where we really were all great friends, such great friends that in that season I believe around 10 marriages and families were spawned from this group. It was a very healthy group of people and we need a reunion. I had only planned to work there a year and ended up there nearly 10. Every other place that attempted to have this dynamic failed. The thing we did right? We didnt say 'we will treat you like family." We just acted like it and supported each other.

My current boss sometimes talks about us being a family from time to time and for the first time in my career, it doesn't bother me. Then again, he'll use it when giving congratulations or message of support to team mates (including when we are grieving), or to reiterate that his door is open to us. Or to invite us to share pics of our puppies in the Teams chat.
My first 2-3 years at that workplace, every time I'd hear this corporate BS about family, I was expexting to hear my weekends, PTO, and bonus denied to increase profits. Heck, we are pressured to use all of our PTOs and to disconnect outside working hours(yes, owners, E-levels and HQ are in Europe, and it does make a huge difference)

Going the extra mile to make sure they're properly equipped, have good housing, all the right training, updated certifications, and more. Once owned and operated a family business, a tire and car repair shop. A customer asked if he could get the family discount. I said sure, his face lit up, and I said, that will be a 300% markup. He looked super confused, and I told him that a couple of family members had stiffed us after we worked on their vehicles, so we marked up prices and got the money upfront from family members now. He gladly took the normal everyday price and became a regular, loyal customer.

My old supervisor told me he wanted me to treat the company like family. I warned him, very sternly, no he does not.
He told me to do it or I'm fired.
So I called him a couple of curses, told him to call me when dinner is ready and walked away while on my phone telling him he looks the opposite of flattering in his grandpa pants.
He got so mad. But he knew my father and called him, asking what the hell went on. (Lmao telling on me to my family? Just what my sister would do, I guess?) "No, they act like that at home. We're a pretty open, playful-mean to each other. Except the siblings. They mix like water and oil."

@@larrymitchell3502 my parents go on and on about how o should respect my elders. I mean yes respect is important but I’ve seen too much of where people older then me demand respect while not deserving it. Hell dad last night got mad at me for telling one of my coworkers who was harassing me to f*ck off, insisting that customers didn’t need to hear “my potty mouth”(dad swears in public more then I do 😑) ofc imma tell that a$$hole to f-off when he’s harping on me about being on my phone when I literally was just changing a song playing on my speaker for 5 seconds. I might be a rebellious brat but that’s cause I’ve been treated poorly at my job and I’m tired of it. I used to have a work ethic and be happy to work, but then that got drained really quickly from my current job.

I remember one of the funniest moments during my orientation at one of my former jobs. There were six of us watching the typical cheesy video, and when the actor said, "Because here, we are a family," one guy just immediately stood up, said, "Nope," and walked out of the room. The rest of us were silent laughing for a few minutes after that.

I worked at a place where they said “we’re like a family” and a job that actually treated their employees like a family. I’m talking about them telling you to stop what you’re doing and take your breaks, letting you stay home sick because you’re sick. Taking a day off and not talking about you behind your back, asking if things are okay and if you need more time. They even had us look at our clock out time and be like…skadaddle you have a house to get to. They even let us leave 30 min early to beat traffic or take transits if we have to. This is why I love the job I’m at, and why so many people stay. Because they care about the employee more than the work. When you take care of your staff, your business becomes a heck of a lot easier.

Better if corporate talks about a "work/life balance", rather than "we're family here"..... I literally ran away from HR when they tried to pull the "family" card.....the VP (who had asked me to come in to sign the contract) asked me what had happened, so I told him my family was a nightmare....that I couldn't handle another....heard that expression was dropped.

The absolute worst job experience I’ve had opened with “we’re a family” in the beginning. I was desperate to get through Uni. with full time work, some sense of security, and as long term of a plan as possible. It was hellish if I’m honest. I was pressured to stay in that environment, couldn’t find work, and was taken advantage of in just about every way you can think. If you have a terrible gut feeling about a place, and have more than enough reason to think the people aren’t a good fit- run!
