I was a store manager and was asked to move to another store across the country. Was told if I "straighten out the problems" (there were many) at the new store within 6 months, I would be promoted to Assistant District Manager. Well, 6 months passed, I was praised for cleaning up the mess and was asked to train a new management recruit. I was happy to do so, and during a conversation with the new recruit, I found out she was hired as the new Assistant DM. AND THEY DUPED ME INTO TRAINING HER!!! I immediately started looking for a new job. Found a better management job in the tech industry, was there 28 years, retired, and am living my best life. Lived and learned.

Nice. Don't let them steamroll you folks. I work in a pharmacy and about six years ago we had a manager who was less than effective at her job. One day the District Manager was in the store and came over started asking me to do some of her duties because she wasn't. I just looked at him and said "When you start paying me $68 dollars an hour I'll start doing the Managers work for her." It took a moment or two but he finally figured out I wasn't going to do her work for free and he finally just walked off.

This just happened to a co-worker. He was "promoted" to become a people manager on top of his current workload. So far no extra compensation nor any official letter or contract stating he is in the new potion. They are just treating it as "added responsibilities" and he has to do the work. He wrote several emails to HR and his manager that until he receives an official new work contract he's not assuming the new people manager responsibilities. Not sure what will come of it but I hope he gets something out of it,

Maybe the boss just wants to get the discussion out of the way so they know exactly what the expectations are once they start so there’s no confusion, and they can hit the ground running. I see nothing wrong with that.

Kind of..... I was kind of used and it was them saying they were testing me at the time but then I never heard anything and it took a few months to get any kind of answers from them. Basically, I had agreed to cover closing shifts for a manager in case his wife went into labor or needed to suddenly go to the hospital as an emergency plan at work. I was still a crew member and still young and dumb..... Realizing that this was like 6-8 years ago and knowing my age, I feel like it was a life time ago and I hate myself for it. I never saw an "updated contract" basically. I was given the manager shirt, I was given a tiny bit of training, and expected to run all the closing shifts. This was a fast food place too, so my schedule wasn't set as in there wasn't one day we were always closed every week. we were 7 days a week.
I look back on it now and I hate myself for doing it. Even if I tell people that I've had management experience, it doesn't help anything. I don't ever want to be a manager again. Never. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry right now, especially knowing what happened with that job and other "training" attempts when i was younger. I hate that job. I hate that place. I will flip it off every time I drive by it, even though most likely most of the staff there isn't the same as when I was there, if any at all. The GM that I worked for at the time is the GM at a location that I pass by more frequently now in the last 6 years and I hate that place just as much. Not just because of the experiences I went through with that location also but having seen what my mom had to deal with there. I can't stand the company as a whole.
    Sorry for the rant.....

@@warringtonminge4167 where I work, an attitude like that would lose you the promotion and perhaps more.

@@markromney94 Good, that's a result in my book, mine and that of every person with a functioning brain.
I would not want to work for any shitty outfit that demanded I work unlimited hours on unlimited days assuming unlimited/unspecified responsibility without the authority or remuneration commensurate with said responsibility or hours.
If you think any different you are the mug.

Assuming there is a promotion, of which there is no guarantee. I would say, unless there are absolutely no other jobs available to you and you would be put in a severely difficult financial position, I would still insist on everything, including the raise, in writing. If you took on the additional responsibility, and within a reasonable time did not receive a legitimate promotion and substantial financial compensation, I would just continue the job and quietly look for work elsewhere.

What is a “contract”? Outside of contractor temp work and an offer letter, perm US jobs don’t have contracts, they just do this and string us along with zero paper trail and if you buck that? You’re a problem.
