While we were building our house we lived in a rental house that had a font load waster/dryer machine. It was very small, not a top brand and the dryer function was useless. We just stopped using the dryer and hung our laundry on a folding rack inside the house or out on the deck. How I wish that house had the powerful bathroom extractor fans that Usui shows us in every apartment!

I think the only thing I would do differently if I had your space is to get an electric kettle, a mug, a bowl, and a spoon. Then I could have tea or coffee whenever I wanted, or make instant noodles and soups. I would also have to get one more storage bin for under the bed, so that I could have some books and journals, because I can't imagine not writing things on paper ☺

Don't compromise on your bed, Usui. If the bed you have right now is comfortable, don't change it. Changing to something that folds up but comes with a worse mattress isn't going to serve you in the long term. Of course, it's your personal preference as to what kind of bed you like. But don't change to a less comfortable bed.

When I visited Japan I really loved the way the cities are built for people walking and bicycling. Small, narrow streets set up with few 'through roads' so the only cars around belonged to the people who live on that street, are visiting there, or delivering supplies to the shops. It was easy to walk anywhere and each little neighbourhood had everything people need - including food, amenities, public buildings, stores, rail transport and buses.
Very different from the Canada and the USA where you usually need a car or bus to do anything. Japanese streets were inconvenient for car traffic and meant you could walk, safely, even in the middle of the road.
Finally, people who live on these narrow streets set up little gardens of flowers, plants, trees, etc., on the roads for the pleasure of everyone. Even if there was no soil - gardens appeared in pots and containers with local shrines sometimes dotted around. Very 'human and humane' cities.
Japanese cities really supported their citizens making a minimalist lifestyle easier and pleasurable.

We can learn from you. I already thought I was a minimalist, but you taught me with this video that I am far from that. One tip: You can use sticky removable hooks. They can even hold 5 kg, so you can hang up small racks with them if you want to store some books. I have never seen staple hooks before, but they might hurt the walls. The food was surprising too because usually they love to eat miso soup on a minimalist diet but you come up with a Hotdog which they call a MOS Burger. Thanks for sharing your perspective! It is inspiring to see how a single person does things differently.

This tiny apartment is incredibly well-organized! It's amazing how all the necessities fit so perfectly. As a non-cook, I unplugged the fridge long ago, and I only use the stove to reheat some leftover. The nearby McDonald's and convenience store are great for quick meals. Thank you for this micro apartment tour and for showcasing some of the products.
I'd love to see more of this type of dwelling in the U.S. Five or more of these units would probably fit in the same floor space as an average American home. It could be a solution to our housing affordability crisis.
The only challenge I'd have is the kitchen because I like to cook at home, but otherwise, I think the space is very livable.
I love Fumio Sasaki's ideas about the entire surrounding city as your personal living space. That was a new idea for me when I read his book...I feel it is the best book on minimalism that I've read. Currently I live off grid in the countryside in a small home, and I think of surrounding nature as my personal living space.

I would replace the garbage can with a piece of furniture, and get a tiny garbage can and put it on the laundry rack. I would also put the briefcase and the mini drink fridge on the laundry rack. I would buy 5 more pairs of underwear and socks, and another set of clothing and then I would not need to do laundry every day. I would get plants and put them on the windowsill. I would replace the plastic water bottles with 1 reusable water bottle and get a small water filter.

That thing with the toilet paper in elementary school happened to me too! They stopped restocking it because some kids kept clogging the toilets with whole rolls of paper as a prank. Once they stopped stocking it in the restrooms, students then had to tell their teacher what "function" they needed to do, and you got a certain number of squares of toilet paper depending on whether it was "function 1" or "function 2." And often you were having this conversation in front of the WHOLE CLASS! It was so humiliating!

Usui-san I am once again in awe of your extremely minimalist lifestyle and apartment.
Knowing everything you own to this degree is commendable ☺️
I love watching your videos and if you ever end up publishing your book, I would love to read it.

I don't think I could ever truly be that minimalist, but I do like to balance out minimalism with my desire to own stuff. It makes purchasing items easier because I only get things that I truly want (and not shop in excess) or I buy things that offer multiple functions. I also invest in higher quality products so that there is less need to buy more. Currently, I still own too many things, but the process of purging is ongoing and I hope to get to a point where I can have only my most favorite things even if it isn't super minimalist.

It drives me nuts how inexpensive food is in Japan. And it’s fresh and great quality! You spent 1676 yen which is about USD $11.01. That MIGHT get you one meal.

  • @LisaMarli

I would definitely want something bigger, because I love my stuff. I also only go to the store once a week and cook food at home. But you do you. It makes you happy.

I wouldn't change anything about the layout of your apartment. It's suitable based on your needs and lifestyle. I would, however, add a small headboard at the head of your bed for the accidental head bumps towards the wall. 😂😅
BTW, I'd love to purchase your book when you release it. 🎉

Thank you for sharing your life with us.
    I actually like your apartment.
I rounded off the amounts for your meals.
In Canadian money it would be about $500.00 a month.
    That wouldn't work for me.
I spend about $150.00 for myself and partner a month on food and drinks like milk, tea etc.
I would have to cook, and I would need a small fridge.
(This apartment would only work if I was single)
I'm so glad you showed what was under the trap door, we were guessing, my partner was right, he said storage, I said small fridge. 😊
Your rent is so cheap to what we pay for a 1 bedroom, our rent is $931.00 and it goes up every year.
I like the way your furniture is arranged, I think it looks really nice in the small space.
The bed you choose is perfect because you add storage bins underneath.

Wow Usui!! You are a true minimalist. No wonder your apartment works so well for you. I do see your toilet paper shelf is well stocked 🙂. Very nice place and you have a very good system set up that keeps your tiny space clutter free. Can't beat that rent either.

Good luck with your book. 📕 My room is very cluttered. I wouldn’t want it to be exactly like yours, but I’d like to declutter and see more of my floor! 😀 I also love my huge shower, it’s designed to have space for a shower chair and rails, as I’m disabled, and cannot stand for long. I know that white can make a room feel bigger, but maybe a pop of colour, by using a duvet cover! My favourite colour is green, so, I would buy a plain bright green one, then buy a green washcloth or hand towel for the bathroom . 💚

The prices surprised me a lot! Here in Poland the food and coffee costs easily 3-4 times the prices you showed in Tokyo. But, as the owner of a 76sqm apartment in a great area of Poznan I pay a tad less for community fees + electricity bills than your rent 😅 Me and my husband work from home and we love hosting parties/gatherings, so we need our space ❤ it's perfect for us. It's so interesting to see how people of the world live and how our needs can differ, thanks for inviting us into your apartment!

I think your micro apartment is wonderful! If I had the same layout the only thing I would need to change is a taller bed to fit more storage under (because I am not a minimalist and have too much clothing 😆).
