I just now learned that the British spelling is "artefact" vs what I've known my whole life: the American "artifact" with an "i"

why is this channel disabling comments on some videos? are they afraid of real debates between real people? is this channel for professional debaters only?

Oxford Union, will you also upload one video with the entire debate? It is much easier to put in audio file and listen on the go.
    Kind regards from Portugal.

The value of artefacts goes beyond the value of money. They are part of the legacy of cultures. Money can never replace that.

Yes but money can compensate and unsure the safety and preservation of such artefacts. For example the oldest known Quran in the world is stored in a library in Birmingham England. This is a treasure to both the Muslim world and the non Muslim world and gives generations the opportunity to observe human development.
If the Quran stayed in Mosul or Raqq one can only fear what could have happened to it.

Bronze horses actually aren't originated from Venice, they were stolen from the Byzantines and sent to Venice during the Fourth Crusade (10:50-10:53).

The world's artefacts should be where they are safest, most able to be maintained and studied by the world's experts, and on a stage where a great number can learn and benefit from them. If you wanted to enjoy books, for example, would you prefer a library or would you prefer to travel to read each writers' books individually? Those museums in Iraq have been completely wrecked, that heritage destroyed. Having been repatriated, those mentioned artefacts are enjoyed by many fewer people than were doing so before. The idea of conflating cultural artefacts with property is also uncomfortable. Just like with a writer's book, the library doesn't claim to own the ideas in the books, nor takes credit for them, they still belong to the writer. In the same way, a culture hasn't lost any property, if anything, it has benefitted from people's awareness and appreciation of it. The roman artefact exhibition in New Delhi for example shouldn't be repatriated to Lyon, (Lugdunum as it was called), where the artefacts were found. Perhaps millions of people are able to visit them in New Delhi (amongst a plethora of Buddhist, Maratha and mughal art), whilst we enjoy a display of similar items here in London. I have a solution, an improvement. A horizontal merger of as many large state-level museums as possible so that the world's most influential artefacts can be circulated across the world's capitals. Fantasy, maybe, but repatriation is working in the complete opposite direction.

@@ibrahima8393 First of all "I" didn't steal anything, and there clearly *is* a debate to be had... we're both commenting on such a debate.
If you want to build a historical claim of ownership over any form of property, create a coherent argument for that. Explain why, say, the English claim to own Stonehenge, when it was built by Pagan Celts and not Christian Anglosaxons. How is it coherent? Does the ownership come with the land?
So what about conquered land? Ancient Egypt built magnificent pyramids. They were (and forgive me if I forget one) conquered by the Ptolemies, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Mamluks, The Ottomans, the British, and then gained "independence" as an Arab Republic. Yet Ancient Egyptians were not Arabs. Why do Arabs claim to own the Pyramids when, clearly, coming to own something by conquering it is absurd.
If you actually bothered to try to formulate an argument you'd realise it's not as obvious as you seem to think it is. Specify 1) what it is that confers ownership 2) Who precisely ownership is conferred to, and make those two claims consistent and non-arbitrary.

Arguments from morality fail because morals are relative. Nothing is objectively right or wrong, good and evil are defined by humans. Is it in our interest to repatriate artefacts? No, so why should we ?
