You know there's European art too, right? The museum wouldn't be empty. I don't agree with art being forcefully taken from places, but this happened all over the world, not just to Africa. France took the Mona Lisa from Italy. That should be repatriated to Italy.

ONTO another note. The millions in Africa that are starving are not my people's responsibility, we left the infrastructure and the schools and the STEM, and yet very little improvement. The moment we left is the moment that we were no longer responsible. That is your concern, not mine. IF you can't feed all those mouths then some will die, same as over here. Europe has poor people who live outside, mostly because of drugs and an unwillingness to work. And many kids are left abandoned starving and without guidance, such is life. Some will pick themselves up and work, some will die. IF people can't care of their kids then they either dont have them or have them adopted. I am enjoying the riches of my labour, and do you know what, your people can have the same of your labour, such is life.
Also, on a another note. having mental problems is not a privilege but it wont stop me either.

No dude... the logic was that the art was abandoned... it was found by European explorers and claimed.. if this did not happen, then the art would probably disappear because nature. We like that you admire it, but prefer it remain here so it can be seen in its native setting." It's like a lost wallet... there's no finders keepers here
Your analogy is a false equivalency. It would need to be longer to cover contextual facts to the arguments being made by the curators of these pieces of art and artifacts. You imply that there is an established precedent that makes stealing personal property ok. That is not what they are stating.

I am one of those "sleepy museum cops" XD From my point of view, it's not Africa who's not ready for taking back the art. In fact most of Europe isn't ready to let go of all colonial thoughts and heritage, because most of us don't even realize how much of our culture is still based on colonial structures.
That is an excellent point. I'm French and they teach us basically nothing about colonialism in schools (except about Algeria).
If the subject would not have made its way into the news, I doubt European people would have realized how much we stole from African culture.
When we go to museums showcasing this art, like, we know its art from Africa. We just don't think about who it belongs to. We just think "Oh wow, it's pretty." or "So that's what it meant back then."
It's about goddamn time we took the time to stop and think about giving back what's not ours.

i can relate to this so hard....as an indian so much of our stuff was stolen by brititsh empire.....even gandhi's letters to his family were owned by british and we indians weren't allowed to see that until last year when they gave it back....even the Kohinoor diamond (largest in the world) on queen's crown was stolen from mughal empire's throne (or was given as a gift by prisoner emperor when east india company took over as british would tell you)...not that it matters really...there are much more dire things to care about.....sometimes its sad to feel that people around the world are still assholes and think think they are better than others

A bit offended by the joke for Greece. It’s ironic because Greece is one of the few European countries that is in a similar situation and can understand Africa’s problem with art. A lot of ancient Greek art has been stolen by France and UK and we have been fighting to get it back for decades with no result. So, I would expect a more nuanced joke about Greece rather than saying it smells like feta cheese.
I think it may actually have been a little ironic: I read it precisely as a crack at the way Greece was also a colonised state of sorts and therefore looked down on by the large european powers who never really took it seriously.

It’s only when Greece was part of or fought against the Ottoman Empire that Europeans found a good chance to steal great pieces of Ancient Greek art in exchange for nothing.

Just like certain African tribes sold slaves to the white people, they also sold "art". There is way to say what was stolen and what was bought, but Africans did in fact willingly sell stuff to white people.
In the majority of cases, that's not true - in the same way that slavery is portrayed as Europeans hunting black people, putting them on ships and taking them to Americas. They didn't, they bought them from their own countrymen and leaders in the trading posts on the coast. Same with the majority of the art - it was actually purchased, not stolen. No one, at the time of colonialism, would go half way around the world to steel a 2 ton carved rock... when he could pack 2 tons of spice, expensive wood, silk or other things that were actually sold for profit.
They were mostly purchased - true, for next to nothing compared to its current value, but that's not Europe's problem. They sold it. Same as Manhattan was not stolen but sold. Sure, for a handful of colored stones - but hey, someone sold it - you can't bitch about the price later when the new owner increases its value.
And the question is real - to whom would they return it anyway? Those countries with those borders did not exist at all during the colonial times. And who know from where exactly were those works of art?
The whole thing is just US PC SJW guilt trip, Europe does not give a damn.

But overall, i guess i have the unpopular opinion of agreeing with your general sentiment.
Things were chaos all over the globe back in those times - mongols were raiding us, we were raiding ourselves, african tribes were raiding themselves, everyone was killing and selling and stealing and colonizing shit from everyone else. While one group of ppl eventually came out ahead, i don't think you can really look at their actions through a lense of today's values. They were a product of their time, and so was everyone else back then, not just the Europeans.
And now, they're refusing to return it under the guise of civilization.

It takes time but I am sure it will eventually. One of the heartbreaking things about the British Museum is just how little (almost nothing) that is actually from the British. It is like a catalogue of stolen or obtained by powerimbalances. A marvelous beautiful Museum sure, but a sad one as well. Mesopotamia, Greece, Africa, Asia it is all locked away in Britain at a time where we all have a need to see that our cultures did contribute to the greatness of human culture.

There are a lot of reasons why an honest discussion should be had about the capacity to ensure the safety of the art and Macron is quite sensible in establishing a timeframe for negotiation and another for returning the art. It gives countries the time to prepare the museums, to train arqueologists, restoration specialists etc. There are currently things disappearing from museums in parts of Africa because there is no proper cataloguing of the items. In spite of the inmense work done by rangers there is still masive poaching inside national parks. Many countries have tiny budgets and gigantic needs for public investment of all sorts. They can't spend the sort of money required to keep lots of valuable artworks because there are tons of other pressing issues such as vaccionation, district nurses, etc. Of course you can't say "africans can't take care of their won art" as if they are naturally incapable. But if you are African you know perfectly well the levels of corruption that exist in some countries and you know that there will be people willing to receive payment to look through fingers with a theft of art from a museum which end up in the collections of private citizens. It happens even from the most intensely guarded museums, just imagine how easy it could be from some places in Africa. Yes, the art should be returned. But it needs to be done properly in an orderly manner so that the museums responsible have time to build the capacity to handle a larger catalogue to countries that have institutional capacity to guard it. There is no point in it being returned, stolen and disappearing forever into the collection of some american or european private art colector and lost to ordinary people forever.
I suspect that statement is based on the countless examples of failed African states. During Egypt's change of government, over 50 pieces of ancient Egyptian artefacts were stolen from a museum in Cairo. Why would the Egyptian Museum in Berlin be motivated to return a priceless, irreplaceable artefact like the Nefretete bust, knowing the state can't protect it? You know the museums want to protect the artefacts, right?

Though I would like to noted that any economic restitution in this day and age would literally be a logistical nightmare, as one would literally need to explore every person's history to find proof that they came from a slave family, which will be bloody annoying as freedom was officially given over 150 years ago, meaning there is a large likelihood that several documents were burned, decayed, or otherwise unreadable. Not to mention there were several attempts to give wealth to the slaves post-Civil War by redistribution of Confederate land, though if memory serves, it didn't pass.

It's a bit dubious. Congo became the personal colony of the king, not from Belgium it self (untill 1908 before which most of these atrocities took place). All this was even done under the name of a charity, while people donating thought they were supporting a proper development of Congo, they were sponsoring these attrocities.
Of course that does not make it any better, however to say the belgians as a people are directly responsible for it is not completely right imo. I do agree that my nation should officially denounce Leopold II for this genocide and that we're not entirely void of blame either.

Here's a solution get every piece of art that was stolen appraised and for every year it stays in another country that country pay fee matching it's appraised value to exhibit. Musical art, trademarked, copyrighted works and filmography get royalties: the same should apply for Artifacts. This guy actually says the truth. If Europeans didn’t protect and labeled these artifacts as “art“ (and put them in museums) they would’ve disappeared within a decade. Also Europeans are not denying the artifacts origins, in every museum I’ve been to it’s generously explained where the artifacts came from and who made them. Also a lot of African states are extremely poor and corrupt and therefore not capable of protecting the art properly.
In general, If people feel like Africans won’t be able to take care of it, then they should build museums and other appropriate art institutions in Africa and show them how to preserve it. @I Identify as a Dragon You're right that most countries are corrupt, but a lot of these African countries are dictatorships and the artwork will end up in a rich politician's private hotel instead of a museum for the people. You could argue that doesn't matter. It would just be a waste though. But the countries that aren't dictatorships should definitely get their art back, which is what Macron said.
I’ve been saying this for years. I think a great way to make amends with the people around the world that have been torn from their homelands or cultures that have been ruined from conquests would be to give them some of their history back. What has been done to the history of South Americans, Native Americans, Africans, Indians, and so many more is wrong and a good way to start to say we’re sorry would be to give back what was taken from them. It’s too bad that some societies that we completely decimated are gone(like most the original people that lived in Australia and most the islands in the pacific)but we could honor their past by placing the art back where it belongs.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the people they interviewed in that museum specialized in african art and will have to restructure their entire lives if everything gets returned. Of course they'd be against it, even though it's right, and needs to be done.
when I was young I didn't question this. I'm from berlin, and when I was a child I saw the Nefertiti in a museum and only years later I realized that it's crazy that it's here, when it could be A) in any museum all over the world, or B) in Egypt
