They interfered in our politics, our social values and economic policies, on top of providing expensive loans and trade imbalanced. Although China is not the best option, it is the better option for African countries at the moment. We started being called "the rising giants" in the last decade just after China increased investments. Its call a loan not donation, you know the deal, you borrow when no one else willing to give you the loan. And China only accounts for 25% of the external debt of these African countries, only a select few has a China majority debt. China obviously doesnt do it out of kindness, they want you to be developed to side with them politically and trade with them, that is normal with all countries. Africa: the debt came from infrastructure that is crucial to our future, and China gave us the best solution with best price. Without China, our debt would be much higher!
Amurica: but you can't afford to pay and you'll lose your sovereignty!
Africa: China's loan came with much lower interest! And when we can't pay, China will restructure the loan, at time even write it off! Unlike the West, you'll force us to pay with our most prized assets the moment we couldn't pay!
Amurica: but based on our research, Chinese debt is a trap!
Africa: so far our GDP, our life expectancy, our living standard have all improved since we dealt with China, so enlighten me with the "trap" please.
Amurica: just believe me, it's bad!
Africa: the last couple of times we choose to believe you, many of our people died!

I am a bit confused to be honest... according to the video, China has provided loans to struggling countries in Africa with as low as zero interests, other countries didn't even bother considering to do the same thing because they think it will be just a waste of money. Would it be better to just not lend the money to Africa and let them be? Not to mention that these money are going to infrastructure projects which will really benefit the country in the long term... As for taking away the assets when a country can't repay the loan, I haven't seen any news reporting any actual case that occurred, but even if it really happened, isn't it a common practice to give the lender your asset in exchange of the unpaid debt? I am just really confused, hope someone with more insight can answer.

Basically, China took an advantage of the African countries’ vulnerability. They knew the countries couldn’t turn down the loans that would improve them, and they also knew the countries wouldn’t be able to repay the loans. So they gave out the loans with the intention of ultimately taking over land and natural resources, not necessarily to help africa. This is evident by the fact that they rather bring Chinese workers to work on projects than hire local Africans for the projects. It’s terrible, their taking an advantage of these African countries that have already been through sm

Is it because western nations don't care about Africa to offer improvement or that they attach too much political strings which then drove the leaders to choose Chinese investments instead? And why Africa needs so much investment to improve itself? Isn't it because western colonialism in the first place? These are the causes, China is the effect.

Ok, here's the best way I can explain it:
You go to a lender for a car loan. You can't find a decent-paying job so you default on your car loan. The lender says, "No problem. If you never shop at 'X' named grocery store again, we will forgive your car loan". Debtor says, "You got it. 'X' grocery store goes out of business, the lender brings in 'Y' grocery store (which they have a financial interest in), & the cost of the debtor's groceries skyrocket which in turn chains him/her to a financial treadmill for life.

The truth is our leaders make those deals. China comes and does shady jobs. Many in the government squander that money so in the end what we can see is the shoddy work the Chinese did!!! So there is no money to payback the debt as the money wasn't used to generate any income. In the end, you have a man surviving on less than a dollar a day, having to pay 16 to 24% in retail taxes just to buy basic stuff. Did I confuse you more? Hope not.

You cannot imagine the amount of corruption going on in the majority of these African countries. They take on all these Chinese infrastructure projects so that they can turn around and tell their fellow countrymen; hey look, we are doing things. But the common person there is unaware of the egregious terms and conditions of those loans. Meanwhile the same African leaders will send their kids to study in Europe and America, go abroad for medical treatments, and vacation overseas also. Heck, some will even fly business class to go watch Barcelona or Chealsea FC play. Meanwhile their stadiums back home are crumbling.
It is up to the African leaders to build their countries from the bottom up, and not turn to shortcuts. This idea that Africa is weak and so must be eternally aided must stop. If Africans cannot stand up for themselves, then no one will.
By the way, just a few decades ago, Chinese people were dying of starvation. But now China is one of the biggest economic powers. Why, because they decided to stand up for themselves. If they didn't, they'd still simply be the world's factory. But China has decided to unabashedly copy western technology and make some of their own. And it is working for them. The lesson here is that Africa can do things for themselves if they set out to do them. Not waiting on the next colonial power. First it was the Europeans, now the Chinese. Who will be next: The Arabs?

When China enters a partnership for a large infrastructure project, they need the skills and knowledge of engineers who have become efficient in this work. It is not likely the management team will be able to find these skills in the local labor force. Let’s be realistic. If this big infrastructure project is the first airport to be built, do you want to hire local engineers who have not done this before? There are examples where the Chinese company then trains local talent to take over the maintenance of the project. This is a win-win situation, which is a key Chinese diplomatic priority. Of course, China is building relations so it has more countries that are friends than foe. However, China’s relationship with African countries will make them stronger versus the West’s relationship with African countries made them weaker through exploitation of their people and resources. Yanis Varoufakis speaks clearly about this.

It's all about the loan agreement. The norm in our government (Trinidad W.I.) is also to go to China when under duress since they are the ones willing to do a loan/trade agreement. It is up to the government's financial advisors to be realistic about the possible repercussions. For instance, money was loaned during the pandemic, however, the deal was a certain percentage would have to be spent on Chinese products and vaccines.
With regards to the job for instance, when a container scanner was built, the agreement was to pass it over after the Chinese engineers provided training to local staff in the Engineering operations. These factory workers could learn and start their own businesses from the knowledge they've gained. But many seem to be much more comfortable and unaware of being "colonized (as you have said)" in such a gentle fashion through small quick financial gain...after experiencing brute force colonization with oppression.

As someone who's spent most of their life in Africa, I have to say this is a very shallow take on the issue. It's cool that you're covering it I guess, but you could have made much better use with 13 minutes.
Africa will be the literal and financial fuel for this "4th industrial revolution" we keep hearing about and all the major players have been doing whatever it takes to stay competitive. America has probably been the biggest player in this. Starting wars, funding rebellions, killing those influential individuals who call for financial independence and vertical integration of industry. Once the country has been ravaged beyond repair, armies of corporations come swooping in to pillage resources as they please, while taking all the large contracts for development which are themselves funded (through loans) by the large American banks. Then France takes a turn, then the U.K., then Israel, and on and on and on. The Berlin conference is when the world's most powerful western governments decided Africa would be a necessary sacrifice to achieve greatness and prosperity. Eventually, China got wise and the race was on.

Yes. The West uses the IMF and World Bank to impose loans with conditions that hurt the ordinary workers, the 99%. Conditions such as requiring they grow crops for export -- not for their own food (and only import their own food). China builds infrastructure and employs many local residents. America and NATO use democracy-bombs to get their way. Given world history in comparison to this present moment, it seems clear why Africans would rather deal with the China.

The workers are getting much higher pay and benefits than local companies. Some are promoted to production line supervisors and being sent to the HQ for training.
For a nation with mostly agrarian economy and low urbanization rate, it takes time to build up its talent pool. All developing nations, not just African nations, are experiencing or have experienced such a phase. You could imagine that a few years from now that Ethiopia would have its own local top-notch clothing factories, and the people who build those businesses may be the ones from the selected few from that factory.
