Very alarming to see the poor calibre of the Cambridge University audience, plus the apparent lack of awareness considering their privilege.
Exactly. That school is on the decline and has been for a while. Not much more than a junior college for the privileged
Universities teach regurgitation of agenda/ideology rather than critical and reasoned thinking. Most students it seems are unaware of their place in the indoctrination machine.

These students are an embarrassment to the University of Cambridge. God help us all if they represent the best we have for our future. Whether you disagree or agree with Rev. Calvin, he is eloquent, considered and consistent.

The modern university culture is completely embarrassing. Watch speeches and debates from past decades, the students didn’t behave in this manner.
They are young students, so I can understand their lack of wisdom. Hopefully they actually learned something from this.

The reason students act this way today is because they are cottled to death, they can never feel a bad feeling or be told they are wrong. As another person already said. Watch debates from the 40 50 60. Ppl had class & pride in what the clothes they wear, had accountability, let others talk and possibly learn from them and didn't disrespect each other.

wait, these are the kids at our most prestigious school? I always had higher expectations. These students are a disgrace to the school and to this country.
It's alarming how many of these young adults scoff at the idea of nationalism. The idea that there should be a Korean state for the Korean people, or an Indian state for the Indian people, ect... seems pretty common sense.
I think many of the kids understand the premise, yet when such is applied to their own nation, they view it negatively. It feels they've been taught to hate their own homeland.
Disappointing to see so many of the audience members behaving deliberately smug, intolerant and disrespectful school children.

How are they privileged, and how does being privileged affect what they're doing here?
Privileged in circumstance and opportunity. It's not like they're starving in a cobalt mine or panning up lithium for these kids iphone battieres. Not hiding in a basement in a country currently in civil war or on that battlefield dying in the mud. That kind of invisable privilege the take for granted.
Oxford union debates are much higher caliber. These students were so tragically smug. Sad really - it was written all over their faces that they weren't there to engage meaningfully with the topic and perspective in good faith or with any suspension of disbelief. They had made up their minds before they entered the room that they knew both sides of the story already, and their own was the far better. To some degree, it's understandable to be small minded and naive when one is young. However, the mark of wisdom is to realize how little one actually knows - and how complicated the world actually is. This is different than mere ignorance or naivety. When this happens, it becomes far more difficult to laugh off well-read, well-intentioned and well-reasoned people - even if one disagrees with their perspective. I hope that these children one day grow up and out of their tiny inner rings, read a bit more widely, and come to regret their time spent being so sure of themselves. For the time being, however, they are clearly far more interested in impressing one another with sidelong smirks and glances than engaging meaningfully with complex topics.
Josh - Its clear you are well versed in this subject . I wish students and all citizens had a better understanding of the rise in human , democratic rights , science and technology that occurred in Britain , from the Age of Enlightenment to the 20th Century . Its one of the greatest achievements in the history of humanity.

The irony in the call to understand our own history is that we really don't but not for the reasons they think. There's not a kid that leave school that wouldn't know about the trans atlantic slave trade or empire but how many would know about magna carta and its significance, how many know about our leading position in principles such as the rule of law, equality under the law, parliamentary democracy, how many know about the anti slavery movement and our role in not only ended the trade in our country but sailing round the world intercepting slave ships and putting pressure on other nations to end the trade, how many would know about even in empire the nuances such as Calvin said the spread of these principles which has made former colonies very very successful, the introduction of roads, hospitals and even Christianity to a degree. How many knows that the slave trade exited everywhere and existed long after the west were unique in abolishing it, how many know that empire is not exclusive to the west and will be able to be grown ups and compare them in terms of brutality and benevolence, how many can actually contextualise history and empathise with people that came before knowing we are no better just happen to be born now?
Wow, he was gracious even amidst the slandering he got. He was level headed, which probably hurt more than the truth he gave. He was direct and didn't sway into side-shows of distraction. God has blessed you Calvin. I am grateful to have listened.

Regardless of personal opinions, many of those students need to be enrolled in a course on how to conduct yourself publicly at a forum.

To watch a well informed, moral, eloquent and respectable black man get treated with such disrespect by a room full of mostly white people is just unbelievable...especially at a place like Cambridge. How in the world is the irony so lost on them? If this is our future, and it looks like it is, our future is already lost.

The British Empire is ranked about 9th or 10th in terms committing atrocities over the past 300 years .
Yet total silence about Mao , who killed more people than Hitler and Stalin combined.
From the Age of Enlightenment , Britain is ranked 1st in the development of human and democratic rights , stopping child labour , ending slavery , animal rights , development of sanitation , public health , public schools and universities , public transportation and parks, science and technology + a national railway grid
( transportation ) and national mail and telegraph system ( communication )
This is actually one of the greatest , if not the greatest , achievements in all of humanity .

It's sad to me to see the audience exude a collective "gasp" at his mention of their privilege. Truly, you are students in one of the most free countries in the world! That alone is a privilege.

@History, etc., I was thinking of that especially while being distracted by childishly disruptive behavior of the Chinese student who was sitting behind him. I hate to be presumptive but the chances are that he landed at Cambridge thanks to his family's CCP (communist party) standing and connections. A standing that in spite of its rhetoric exploits and benefits from the hard labor and miserly pay of the mass workforce which to great extent are still the state's serfs in spite of having been granted in the last 4 decades some semblance of property rights. His comment about slavery in the Roman empire not having a lasting effect just shows the limits of his knowledge (to that of what is in the popular media, controlled by corporate conglomerates). Even after undisguised slavery withered in the lands of the former Roman empire, descendants of slaves were still in a disadvantageous economic, political, and social position not to mention being held back by the psychological scar of a sense of inferiority. Soon after that the chains of serfdom came to replace slavery and, it can be argued, hit affected people harder than the segregationist sharecropper condition that continued to keep blacks in a state of inequality.

As for the privileged Chinese student, China didn't abolish slavery in law until 1910, and in practice it existed until 1949.

Unfortunately the Cambridge youth show they are not learning how to be respectful of people's opinions other than their own.
Not only are they disrespectful , but they don't want to learn , apply critical thinking and they certainly have no knowledge of history . The origins of Human and Democrats rights really began in Britain during the Age of Enlightenment , with the Glorious Revolution of 1688 , John Locke and the 1689 English Bill of Rights .
All these rights continued evolve in Britain over the next 300 years , and were eventually exported all over the world .
This is one of the greatest achievements in all of humanity .
This was the major influence on the US Constitution and the 1948 UN Declaration of Human Rights .
Even Japan's 1947 Constitution is based on Britain 's Westminster System .

You would have thought that at such a 'prestigious' university as Cambridge, the intellectual calibre of the students would have been very high. Sadly, I can see no evidence of that here.

It is not merit based but money and connections based so this is more like in breeding of the ruling caste rather than the studious minds of tomorrow, which really explains the mannerisms and lack of logical faculties. These are the very types that would have arrived at slavery as a solution and don't seem to grasp it is ongoing today in countries they don't know about or want to because it doesn't match their virtue signaling agenda.
Well I was disgusted to see one female student behind Calvin continuously wiping her nose on her sleeve throughout his speech..the boy next to her with the red jumper was arrogant, seeking attention like a five year old. The rest were just sniggering. He called homosexuality a symptom of 'degeneracy' on the same evening because of my sexual orientation, hardly a gentleman and far more rude than any of the students were to him. He pretends to know far more about theology than he in fact does, which isn't surprising for someone refused ordination.

Who are these children in the audience? They are picking their pimples, looking at their cellphones, giggling and not paying attention- and that’s just the ones behind the reverend. Very poor behavior from the student body of a prestigious institution of learning.
I have watched many of the oxford union debates and as my interest peaked in these student audience debates I have ventured over to the Cambridge union you tube channel. Well what a disappointment. Having not been fortunate enough to attend either of these universities I have always dreamt that one day my children would be able to attend. Believing that these universities were comparable to each other I wouldn't have minded which. The behaviour, attitude and closed mindedness of these students has altered my opinion drastically.
Those “students” entered the room with their limited view of the world (paid big money for that limited view) and behaved like babies in a playpen. They looked ridiculous which made Mr. Robinson shine all the more.
Love the bit where he told the lad behind him ‘how are you suffering, you study at one of the best universities in the world, you are privileged’.
I’d love to see these middle class students with no life experience and living off taxpayers and mummy and daddy go up to a regular white British builder, security officer or warehouser and tell them how privileged they are.

Rev Calvin is indeed correct -- In terms of former British colonies, I think they would largely prefer to remain part of the UK Empire or at least glad that they were part of it. For the most recent example, look at Hong Kong.
Reparations is an impossible calculus that can only make things worse. The correct way to use that money is to help whoever's at the bottom of society today regardless of why.
Would you give money to SOME people who are poor because of their own lifestyle?
@@sashakhan1262 The money needs to be spent on improving the parts of system that disproportionately negatively effect those with the least ability to care for themselves. (Otherwise known as the Original Position or Veil of Ignorance in political thought and philosophy.) Nothing should be given to individuals. What individuals deserve is a Fair system in the first place, then they're won't be any discrepancies to balance later. They can't be balanced later anyway. Nothing can compensate someone for society not caring about them or other frustration involved in navigating an obscure bureaucracy.

These students lack wisdom. I am sure Pastor Robinson understands that, and he is very gracious to them. He is bringing them truth, and they mock it now, but one day they will understand.
There some very childish and simple-minded students at that school.
I'm a high school teacher. Some of the rowdiest classes I've ever had were more respectful of guest speakers than these kids.
I expected so much more from students fortunate enough to go to an institution such as Cambridge. Their lack of humility and openness to new (or competing) ideas is anathema to everything universities stand for. These kids should be utterly humiliated their infantile behaviour has been captured and permanently put on display for all to see.
The audience’s smirks and talking to each other seem to indicate a total disrespect for the speaker or to a serious topic as such. Whereas Calvin’s speech about blessing of same sex union by CoE, given in Oxford union is treated with more respect. Should I therefore hold a different impression on these two institutions?
There is a huge difference between the audience of the Oxford union vs cambridge union.
The oxford union sit quietly, listen with an open mind, not condemning or condoning. They are dressed in formal entire and leave any questions to the end.
The cambridge union are giggling and talking throughout. They seem to be there to argue rather than to listen to an opinion different to their own. If you are going to invite a speaker to speak, you should be respectful. Otherwise, dont invite them at all.

The students represented in the video expressing their comments appear to be very immature, ignorant of the history of slavery, childish, prejudice, and overwhelmingly liberal. Many of these idols will unfortunately become leaders of our countries as adults. God help us! From California
In America half of my ancestors came into America in the 1880s from Sweden, and they settled and were farmers in Kansas and Colorado, where they had virtually no contact with Black Americans because not many of them lived in these areas. These brave and bauny Swedes build their farms with their own labor, and if they ever hired others to help them, they paid a fair wage for their day. How is it fair for that side of me to pay anything for sins they never did to descendants of people then never knew? If so, which I don't concede to, how much? These elitist thinking young people should watch the American treasure Black Historian and Economist Thomas Sowell, who knows and tells the true history of slavery.

I watched, listened; in disbelief at the surrounding crèche of Cambridge attendees, who were more interested in postulating( the Chinese youth) snickering and sniping...oblivious to the stats expounded by the Reverend Calvin Robinson. The future looks grim!

I am an American millennial - are generation Z students mostly this disrespectful in a public forum these days? That saddens me. I recall a student or two when I was young perhaps mocking or being disrespectful to a political speaker, but never on such a wide scale. Certainly would not expect that at a prestigious university.
The guy in the glasses and red snoopy sweatshirt was particularly proud and full of himself. The redhead on the left in the green-striped shirt and her friends seem very interested in their phones. Too bad their cups are already full. They know everything there is to know and only want to live in an echo chamber as fragile snowflakes who might melt at any moment. Melt or melt-down; probably both. What does it take to be admitted to Cambridge these days anyway?
