Whether Hawass is a corrupt man or not, the truth here is that Egypt was plundered. The tombs in The Valley of the kings were looted by grave robbers for thousands of years, all those artifacts that were taken out of the country illegally, not to say that they were stolen.

Hawass is a megalomaniac who thinks that he owns the pyramids. One of the reasons for distributing artifacts is not just to gain wider notoriety - it is to protect them from destruction by a singular event. For example, the Buddhas of Bamiyan were destroyed by the Taliban. As long as the Middle East is populated by retrograde cretins with no respect for the common historical heritage of mankind, there will always be that risk.
His plaints also fall on deaf ears simply because it is an attempt to increase tourist revenue - not the result of some ethical complaint. Hawass has stood in the way of outside expeditions exploring the chambers beneath the left foot of the Sphinx; analyzing the rock from which the Sphinx was excavated; further explorations of the Great Pyramids - why? Because HE wants to be the focus of attention; HE wants to open them to great fanfare and personal notoriety.
He is a megalomaniac who refuses to allow scientists to even discuss the prospect of an earlier genesis for the Sphinx - because HE has gone on record opposing the theory, but also because he thinks HE is an Egyptian. He has no more relation to the ancient Egyptians than i do. The fact that these artifacts and monuments are in his country does not mean they are his - nor even his country's; they are part of the developmental history of all of mankind. And they need to be treated, as do many other sites, as the common heritage and property of the world.

Giovanni Belzoni discovered Seti 1 tomb and Ramses 2 tomb. preserving artifacts is the only way to show the world who the ancient Egyptians and how powerful they were in their own time. Rosetta Stone going to (and staying within) France makes a lot more sense. I think there are some artifacts that could be justifiably repatriated, but that shouldn't be the default. The stone was carved in several languages because of the Grecian Ptolemaic Dynasty - and was relevant because Napoleon's expedition helped translate the Heiroglyphs because there were translations from Heiroglyphs to Ancient Greek on the stone. Egypt today is not Ancient Egypt, and the Egyptians of today are not the Ancient Egyptians who built any of these structures. Modern Egypt has a custodial role of incredible importance (of which Hawass has been a beneficiary) and should be financed and supported in accordance with said role, but it should no sooner have carte blanche on any artifact more than any other state, since we should hold the Ancient Egyptians highest and front and center, and in holding them highest, front and center, it quietens the voice of Modern Egypt. If Modern Egypt had every artifact and carte blanche it could very easily attempt to purge this Ancient History and these relics - and there are those who wish to destroy this history from within Egypt.

The British, German, French nor American museums/archeologists can't help themselves, for they feel entitled to take what belongs to others without recourse. The reason has to do with the money that is made from exhibiting these Egyptian treasures. He is not even talking about the Egyptian treasures stolen and purchased by the very wealthy for their private collections. The names of some of these "elite families" would stun you - for the names of these people range from the US, Western Europe, Switzerland, Dubai, and the Vatican. Thieves are thieves irregardless of their financial standing on the world stage. I would like for some archeologist from Egypt to dig in Great Britain, and take back to Egypt the treasures they find. I wonder how the British would feel about that?? Or would they feel "what's good for the goose, is not good for the gander"?

I dont think he's making an argument for repatriation of all objects - only for those that were illegally removed and, within that, those objects which 'make sense' in their homeland. Though thats a controversial point. He also went on to talk about the bad practices of other museums, and I have to say the museums in Egypt are downright awful.
