    I think it's very admirable they didn't just cut and run and let it die, they're actually trying to fix their game, and I think it's in the gaming communities best interest to show some slack when a developer acknowledges they fucked up and are trying their best to fix it instead of just hating a game no matter what they do cause it wasn't what you hoped for when it first came out.
    Let developers know that just because they messed up doesn't mean they can't bounce back and honestly it should be a lesson to all who pre-order games and fall into the hype. If it was up to the developers alone, given how well they've treated this entire situation, I'd bet they wouldn't have even released it last year, publisher deadlines seem to be the real problem here, I don't feel like they lied so much as they weren't given the time to create everything they intended, look at how much content they've developed in one year alone.
    I was part of those disappointed and upset with how the game turned out when it was first released, tho I never bought it because I waited like an intelligent consumer. However I feel like they've earned a bit of forgiveness and I feel confident in buying the game at this point knowing they've been diligent in continuing to create free major updates in a fairly timely manner, and I think it's important to remember this game is developed by an entire team, so even if one or two people at the top tend to spew bull, there's still a dedicated team of people under them that seem to actually care about the product they've created and shouldn't be punished for it.

      Reading all the "but they lied, we shouldn't forgive them!" comments is saddening. As you said, they're doing a lot better than many game devs regarding fixing their mistake

    • @TheAsj97

      The only reason they're doing this is to save their reputation, or do you think anyone would ever buy another Hello Games/Sean Murray game again?

    • @BenWoods
      @BenWoods 7 лет назад +53

      Loponstorm here is the problem. They never actually came out and acknowledged it. They never said, "yes we lied, we are sorry, and we will make it right". Until they come out and admit that they lied, apologize, and promise to make it right, they don't deserve forgiveness. They made a fucking fortune on this game. Making it right is the absolute least they should do.

      You don't give absolute liars any slack. The devs of this game lied, over and over and over. They said shit they ABSOLUTELY knew was not true. Fuck these guys and everything they will ever release.

      Of course. The internet is a polarizing place.
      Everything that becomes memetic to dislike will continue to be disliked for the sake of the meme.
      It even happens to things that are universally liked; it becomes a meme to hate the people who like popular things.
      It's easier to hate something than to change your perception and understanding to judge something without bias.
      Even if they added every feature promised that was missing at launch, people have ingrained their distate and distrust for the developer; regardless if it's good or bad or right or wrong.

      I bought it on release and of course my surprise when it wasn't like the trailer, but intead of hating it and selling it, I kept it because A) I wouldn't get my 60 bucks back and B) they could still pump out updates to make it better, keep in mind that this game was created by 14 guys and sony just pushed them to release it...

      Reginald Morris. Because thats a massively non trivial thing to acomplish in such a minor piece of software as a game?
      Just creating a simulator that maps the orbits of dots around other dots on a galactic scale would be a huge project.

      No, because the distance would be so massive that the technology behind KSP (moving the world around the player, not vice versa) would have to be added on top of all the fucking procedural shit, it would require a whole revision for a useless addition that only complicates things.

      I'd say it's maybe 80-90% there to what I was expecting/hoping for at launch. That last 10-20% is compensated for by a load of stuff that was never mentioned in the original trailers so in a way it's now more than I hoped it would be. And they're still working on it. I hated them for the launch and never bothered with the last two updates cause it didn't fix the broken gameplay. Now however, they have definitely gained my forgiveness. I haven't forgotten what they did, but I think they've earned a second chance.

      It's a decent game. The reason it flopped so hard was because Sean Murray outright lied about what would be in the game. People got far too hyped for it and were obviously disappointing. Although it's still at a $60 price point. So it is in no way worth that much. I think it's probably a $20 game now. Initially it was a $10 game

    • @worsedoughnut

      To be fair, at launch it was very, like scott said, very "touristy" feeling at launch. But after playing around in 1.3 myself I'd say this has the markings of a great game again.
      So yes, if you don't care about drama from internet people, this game is still really fun.

    • @TowersofContrast
      @TowersofContrast 7 лет назад +8

      really yeah, everyone else is so butt hurt about their blatant false adverts in the beginning. Its not that bad if you like a relaxed survival game with an element of challenge. there is progression that people will claim is grindy, but honestly its not as grindy as many other games ive played. It rewards you for the time you put into it and it only punishes you when you dont maintain a small reserve of maintenance resources or arent paying attention to your surroundings.

    I loved this game at launch, got kinda pissed off, and I stopped playing it after a few days. THEN, the updates hit, and oh my, vehicles, bases, teleporters, better equipment, more differentiated stuff. Then I played for another week, almost doubling playtime. The game has been updated further, combat is a bit iffy, money making isn't an easy thing, quests play a big part, the game doesn't hold your hand anymore, it looks great and the camera mode can lead to some amazing screenshots. If this was the game at launch it would be phenomenal. I'm just glad the devs haven't forgotten and they are still working to increase player-base. And now 60% off, buy it now

      Sander Datema for now we just have a "much more will follow" and the promise of fleshing out the coop aspect of the game. But considering the fact that the game has been the top seller on steam for 12 hours straight and the sheer size of the update i'm not expecting anything but bug fixes for the following 3-5 months. What hello games gave us today is more than enough to make a solid experience. Is it worth the 60 dollars? Hm... i don't know. :/ but right now it's 20 dollars on steam and i suggest you go get it

    Hello Games had no marketing department leading to Shaun making promises that he thought could be completed before Sony pushed for an early launch, leading to the half-baked initial release.
    Hello Games continuing to update and improve their game shows that they were not lying to trick people out of money. Indeed, they didn't lie, as lying requires intent. It shows that they genuinely love their creation and wish to nurture and care for it and its community. And Waking Titan was really fun to play through.

    I think people fail to acknowledge the truths as to why the launch of No Man's Sky was so rocky. Hello Games' claims were not false advertisement but instead things that they intended to be at launch. However, with Sony breathing down their neck and even people sending death threats because they delayed it for like 10 days , they were almost forced to deliver a shit game.
    I believe that you should give No Man's Sky a second chance. They're trying to add what they promised when others wouldn't let them. Don't be mad at them for personal disillusionment.

    • @DerpfaceBroface
      @DerpfaceBroface 7 лет назад +7

      I still think you're being too hostile about this.
      For one, when he said there was multiplayer, they actually had a prototype multiplayer worked out. However, it was so buggy and disgusting they had to scrap it entirely. For some reason he didn't state this at the launch, which I push on Sean as an oopsie. But, now just as anyone, he's learned a bit better on how to manage a community based on his mistakes. I personally feel it's wrong to just simply put off a team's efforts and designate them as terrible people because of mistakes they've made.
      That's why they launched Waking Titan, to reach out to the dedicated community but still crowd control the hype, which seemed to work this time around.
      I just blame it on inexperience. It was a new arena for such a small team, so I'm a bit more understanding about their situation.

      The list of shit that was lied about is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too big to just let completely go. But I think the biggest fuckup they had is even as the game launched they still maintained the idea that multiplayer was still there, just the chances of seeing a player were near zero. Hell idk if they actually ever said themselves yet that there's zero multiplayer. Since after the game launched instead of saying anything or trying to do anything with the community they disappeared off the face of the planet for months without a word.
      And even after the mountain of BS this game has had the fact it's STILL a 60$ game is just insulting. They're still trying to sell it like it's a brandnew AAA game instead of what it actually is. A indie early access game.

    It's definitely becoming something phenomenal. I think a lot of people forget how small of a team they really are. Prior to launch I didn't expect much out of the game due to the small dev team and the amount of time they had to develop it. I'm a huge early access player on steam and love to see small developers make great games; The Long Dark for example, been with it since it first appeared on steam and it went through these same hurdles. For such a small team, the sheer scale of the game and now the new complexities to each system economically and physically is very impressive and its definitely something that I could not accomplish. No Mans Sky has always fit the game of my dreams when it comes to space exploration, no boundaries or dlc crap. Just pure exploration of a vast universe.
    What have we learned from No Mans Sky? Triple A developers and small Indie teams should not team up, it's just bad ju ju. A small indie team cannot keep up with the amount of advertising and hype that a triple A developer can pump out.
    These updates are making this game even better and better, and one of the craziest games ever made. Try to compare this game to other open world games now, No Mans Sky is getting there.
    Sean has made the effort to try and apologize through multiple updates and patches and continous development of the game, something that many triple A developers would just give the middle finger to. I hope the community will eventually find forgiveness in their hearts.

    It's always surprising how many people show up to defend the game. Hello Games isn't some tiny indie that just made mistakes, they had Triple A hype and Triple A backing (don't neglect the fact that Sony did A LOT of the advertising and budget) and launched the game as-is, in a $60 package. A $60 package that they insisted you should buy from their own site instead of say, Steam or Amazon, so they got a bigger cut - and less refunds. And when people ended up having the game before launch, they said it was an incomplete product and to ignore everything, and detailed all these things in the day one patch which, even as of this update DO NOT EXIST. Day one comes around and we find it's the exact same product, the patch just fixed *a few* crashes or slowdowns. There's also a lot of misinformation about how big the team working on the game supposedly is... we've heard conflicting numbers from all sides. A Sony executive in November 2016 had said six, and I've personally also heard sixteen, fifteen, eleven, and two dozen before.
    At some point, people need to respect the fact that post-launch goodwill doesn't make up for the fact that Hello Games KNEW that the game we were being shown wasn't remotely the final product. That they knew all those screenshots and "live demos" and bullshots and promotional videos were never real. That Sony knew this, that Hello Games knew this, and that Sean Murray knew this. Things we'd seen as being "fully functional" YEARS ago haven't even come to the live version now. They've lied, time and time again. And the fact that people are willing to see anyone involved in this as a good guy is indicative of a severe lack of factual recognition.

    • @jukahri

      But isn't that a non-issue? Surely if you like the game you should play it (and as a game it has merits), and if you don't you should not? What the people who made the game did should have no bearing on that. Nobody needs to defend HG, and arguing for the good aspects of NMS isn't defending HG either.

    • @dangerousish7837
      @dangerousish7837 7 лет назад +6

      You can't possibly know that they knew all of that. For one, it was a demo. Which means everything was planned and none of those game play videos were procedural or random in any sense. They just prepared to show off PLANNED features. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, especially when you're a small studio who needs to get publishing help from a large company like Sony. You can get over your head and you can also run out of budget before things are finished. Trust me, they'd be idiots if they knew almost none of those features would make it into the 1.0 release of the game. It's obvious it'd ruin their reputation and they wouldn't make another game again. So they tried to make it right by releasing free updates with most of the stuff actually being suggestions from fans like base building, a feature they didn't even want in the game originally. The reason they have been quiet is probably because they want to focus on listening and making the game better before they get over their head again and make more silly mistakes. This hate is really unnecessary and shows that even though they can show their customers respect by adding free content to the game, most of which was suggested by players, people are too stubborn and blind to realize that and continue to bash a company for fixing a mistake.

    • @arbiter787

    I imagine that the reason for making you go over stuff is so you cannot fly your ship into caves and mine the resources within with the ship lasers. Or it might be so that you can't fly into said caves and get stuck, if you're unable to come to a complete stop mid-air (hover).

    • @5Andysalive
      @5Andysalive 7 лет назад

      Every "content", NMS has more is grind. Mining minerals is no "content" that puts it above Elite just because NMS has it. Most game mechanics exist exclusively to extend your inventory space. How "deep" is that? And apart from that, it simply has not "more content". And the bit of base building, you might argue with, is canceled out by the Elite feature of working real multiplayer.
      So NMS has not "more content" and most features they share are done a lot better in Elite.
      In short: EVEN Elite of which i'm, despite 200hrs playtime, very critical, is a much better game. Not even to mention NMS' direct competition like Empyrion.

      Kingdom Oh i totally agree. I didn't mean to throw so much shade at Hello Games, yes the marketing was bad but Sony had a big hand in that. I respect HG for continuing and i actually enjoy the game quite a bit when i just want to chill and run around a universe. My biggest gripe is the community, they wanted something that obviously wasn't finished, they were willing to send death threats. I think the biggest reason this game was launched in the state it was is because of the community. Everyone was so hyped and excited and unfortunately the game still needed another year or 2 of development. Sony got way too impatient and pushed for HG to release the game as it was. But like i said, i wish that HG had just come out and said, hey it's not ready and if you get it now you're going to be very disapointed. Just a huge clusterfuck that could have been prevented had Sony not been apart of the whole thing. Add in the community who was ready to tear shit up and we have the launch of NMS

    The new Upgrade Ship mechanic is way faster than it was before.
    Before: You searched forever to find a crashed ship. The crashed ship had a 50% chance of having ONE additional slot - and most, if not all, the equipment needed to be fixes.
    As of 1.3: Crashed ships are a huge upgrade, with way more slots overall (but usually fewer at first, as they need to be repaired) and you still need to repair all the damaged equipment.
    Getting a much more upgraded ship, from your starting ship is actually quite a lot faster.
    I enjoyed the original game well enough, but this new iteration is way more fun. It's still "No Man's Sky" which is still all about exploration. If you like open world sandboxes / exploration games, then it's a lot of fun with 1.3. Full Disclosure, I'm hooked - again.

    How were first Mars landers designed if there was not much knowledge about the Mars atmosphere (heat shield requirements, fuel needed, etc.)?

    • @miketothe2ndpwr
      @miketothe2ndpwr 7 лет назад

      the atmosphere was known due to analyzing light levels. I don't know how they knew what the soil was like but I know at least one Russian lander made it to mars and that probably helped.

      I won't ever forgive them for how ridiculous their lies were. False advertising is one thing, but what they did somehow managed to be even worse than that. A year later, and we're still nowhere near being where we should have been.

      No. Never let yourself forget it. They lied to make more sales and more money, and forgetting about it will let them get away with it. Remember what these greedy bastards did and be more cautious in the future.

      If you promise to place a product on market with A, B and C features, and by the time you finally place it on market it lacks B and C features, you don't "redeem yourself" by working on adding - originally promised - B and C features.
      After placing your incomplete product on market you have a few options:
      1. You lower your price to adjust it to the real product - and launch ad campaigns describing the real product - in order not to commit a CRIME -> false advertising.
      2. Withdraw your product of the market, add both B and C features that the product initially lack, and then re-launch the product as you intially advertised - obviously refunding the money to the people that first bought the product or give them options.
      What you should NOT do after placing your incomplete product on market:
      1. Do absolutely nothing to fix the errors and incompletion of your product.
      2. Allow people to buy your - faulty - product knowing its faults.
      3. Play victim by sayig that your studio is small and try and fix silently your mistakes.
      Doing comparisons is absurd -> saying that HG should go away with their lies because other companies do so, is no excuse.
      Also, people shouldn't be "thankful" because HG sticked to their product: that's their responsibility for launching an incomplete product.
      The two things that annoy the gaming community the most are:
      1. Devs lying about features that don't exist (or can only be achieved via DLC or pay to win).
      2. Fans who defend the devs using lame excuses such as "small studio" or "be thankful is free".
      I don't expect to be charged for a fix that shouldn't happen in the first place. Is as simple as this: if you lie, bear the consequences, don't play victim.

      Name 1 of the other big games still getting updates for its sorry broken state 1 year after release.
      What they did was bad. But unlike the other big studios that would just take the cash they got and ran with it, these guys are actually trying to do good on their promisses post launch.
      Blame where blame is due, but credit where its due to. And these guys actually deserve it for owning up to their misstakes and at least trying to fix them. I dont see any other studio doing anything of the sort.

      If it allowed you to play with friends (which it may at some point tho that's not something I'd use), there is a Terrain Manipulator in the game that allows free-form terrain placement and deletion, you just don't have it immediately when you start.

    sorry scott but they should have said it was an early release product, instead they said "NO THIS IS THE FULL GAME PAY US FULL PRICE" and then released the game with bugs out the ass and no content. You cant forgive them for this so easily we need to make a statement to all game devs that we wont stand for such money grubbing shenanigans

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  7 лет назад +26

      +Christopher Holt I totally agree they would have done a much better release with early access. However, I don't know what dictionary would equate paying your dev staff for a whole year after release to add free content updates with 'money grubbing shenanigans'. If they had just taken the money left the game as it was and moved on to another project that would qualify.

    • @GregaMeglic
      @GregaMeglic 7 лет назад +9

      If you want to make a statement, then look a Warner Brothers. Shadow of war has microtransactions in single player and a pay to win multiplayer component.
      Their steam moderators are deleting threads and banning people for bringing it up, all the while Valve is going "This aint our problem"
      These guys have been working on actually delivering what was promissed for a year now. Practically anyone else would have split a year ago.
      The hate on them is as much fanboyish as the love for Steam. Especially considerring that Origin of all places has better consumer care than Valve does >.>
      Yes there was a statement, and a big one at that. But in continuing the hate agenda towards a dev actively trying to fix their misstakes, is also sending a statement. And that statement is the wrong one to make.
      Im not saying buy the game now, just diling down the hate and giving them props for actually going further than any dev ive seen thus far does seem like resonable. Wouldnt you agree?

      My only complaint with the game as it stands is that they've had 3 frankly minor updates in a year with just about zero if any communication. I can only believe the company is bust and they're doing this on their own time, or they're incredibly slow.

      Scott Manley one these are not free content updates. These are the features we PAID FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE. How can you consider content free simply because they are adding them a t a later date? We paid for the game they didn't give us until a year later. This is not free content, this is content we paid for but didn't get until a year later. Don't be gullible my friend

    Iron, when finally powdered, has actually been found to be a comparable fuel source to hydrocarbons. Fascinating studies on the subject are out there.
    If you want a primitive example of iron as fuel, look at a thermite reaction, which takes iron oxide and aluminum and burns at extreme temperatures.

    I have something to say on the lies that were told prior to the initial launch a year ago.
    1. Yes, lies were told and promises were broken. This game was one of the biggest let downs in recent gaming history and it was a lesson to be wary when pre-ordering games.
    2. This game is what over a dozen people rely on for a job. We gave them hate but the developers still need to make a living so it isn't right to keep holding something that happened a year ago over them.
    3. They are trying to fix their mistakes. While the lies will never have not happened, they are putting in hard work and effort to make it up to those who bought the game.
    4. They are releasing free updates which are actually improving the game a lot. For those who are hating on the updates and are calling them "Money hungry liars", wouldn't you like it if something you bought was getting improved?
    5. If you don't want to buy the game, you don't have to. It isn't worth it spoiling someone else's experience, especially if they actual enjoy this game. For those who have bought the game, like me, It is so nice that they are constantly working at improving the game. There are plenty of games where this kind of support isn't seen by their developers.
    That was just my two cents on the matter. Happy exploring fellow interlopers.

    Also, I believe a more traditional type of multiplayer is down the pipeline as the patch notes admitted that multiplayer was limited but an important step to bringing synchronous multiplayer. I think the orbs are part of a stress test and incorporating that into the lore was a nice touch.

    is the having to hold the button forever fixed yet?
    is the glitch with heat on beam weapon fixed yet?
    can you set things to autoreload from inventory yet?
    can you stack things past 500 yet?
    is crafting easy yet?
    do we still have those galaxy wide asteroid fields?
    pop-ins still bad?
    FPS still bad?
    did they fix the render scaling issues?
    combat still bad?
    costs on items still several hours to get something that will break after going through a single black hole?
    is there even a reason to go to more than one planet yet?
    can people move at a reasonable pace yet?
    did the interplanetary and interstellar and intergalactic homogeneity get fixed yet?
    i fully expect more than half of these to be fixed by now (and if thats not the case then its just sad to me), but i dont have any clue how any these things made it into the full game to begin with
