  • No Man's Sky devs have continued to work on the game, presumably still trying to deliver all the features that Sean Murray promised when dazzled by interviewers. The latest Pathfinder release adds ground vehicles, ship and tool specialization and a very attractive photo mode to let players appreciate the newly upgraded graphics.

    Apparently I have the least popular opinion in the entire world, I like No Man's Sky. I play it after a day at work when all I want to do is chill and look at fantastic scenery. I love it.

      I know right!?! There have been other games in the past that promised things they didn't quite deliver. But wow, would you look at the visuals, in my opinion, they make up for it. It seems like people want to hate this game, they want it to fail, but there are so many good things to immerse yourself in. I don't think it's my favorite game ever but it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

      Honestly! I really enjoy the game too. I can understand why the game gets hate but I also think it became _way_ too fashionable to hate on it. To the point where lots of critics don't really know what they're talking about, imo. Some people are still beating the dead horse today, too. NMS, while getting deserved criticism, still manages to be misunderstood.

      Good for you. You can like it. I never found the scenery very exciting, and the gameplay pretty much non-existent, but at least someone can enjoy the game they put so much work into overhyping.

    You can only drive these things on your base's planet? You mean the planet you're likely to have explored quite extensively already since you deemed it worthy to place your base on?

      Casper Dar i can drive them on any Planet i want. you have to destroy the vehicle Plattform and rebuild it on any Planet you want, dont forget to destroy it right after you build it.

    You know... as much as I am disappointed by this trainwreck of a game, I am honestly surprised and impressed by the fact that the developers are still working on this.

      Yup. I am not really interested in the game anymore, and doubt I will ever be, but it does look like the developers managed to recover (took a while though...) and are actually working on the game out of passion for it. Which is nice to see.

      Passion for the game was no problem... Maybe they (devs) were too attached to it, so they couldn't stop bragging about features that wouldn't even make it to the deadline. Specially sean...

      It's a really good foundation that they can, and are, adding a lot to. In a year or two's time, it'll be a very good game. Anyway, even at launch you could get a solid 20-30 hours out of it, as in a solid 20-30 hours of doing the story, learning new things, and discovering new things you haven't seen before. It being on PC too, the mods make the game much better too.

      I'm not sure they have a choice. Either they get it to a decent state before moving on to the next project or their next project is described as the follow-up to _that_ game. They need NMS to be good before moving on or their next game is automatically a flop.

      I don't believe you're Rommel. The real rommel would understand that the FOV is a luxury compared to the FOV the driver of a Panzer tank had.

      Rommel drove his tank with the hatch open because he didn't fear the allies and their weak pitiful tanks so he had a great FOV

      SlyBlueCat remember, this whole game is made by only six people. And it was a decent game at launch, just didn't have everything they said, but within half a year, it has everything except multiplayer

      SlyBlueCat From Sony? Ha.. all they got from Sony was advertising so they didn't have to spend any money on doing so.. and no indie games made by two people haven't done the impossible, ever. This game is larger than every other game, combined. NMS is 2^64 planets.. or 18,000,000,000,000,000,000. Or 18 quintillion planets. One minecraft world is 60million x60million meters, or 921 quadrillion. For every block in a minecraft world, there's 20 planets in NMS.

      Corey McGuire well it was in the making 2yrs before release, and I say this a lot, was only made with 6 people.. for just six people making this game, I would except much more from everyone.. fucking minecraft, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny, has nothing on this game.

      Two years is not enough time for a game, period. I don't care how many people you have. If you're going to try to make a game in two years, you better give your customers realistic expectations. This, Hello Games, did not do.
      Meanwhile, Minecraft gave their customers very realistic expectations. It's BY FAR the most successful game is recent history.

      There have been a lot of gems worthy of full price from small houses.
      The trouble with this title is the degree of the difference between what was promised and what was delivered.
      And this latest patch seems so far off from a remedy, it really seems like they are just not in touch with their audience.

    You can instantly warp back to your base from space stations, then go back to where you left off. Planetary bases can be used as farms to farm resources easily, as well as being a great way to have a planet with important resources that you can instantly warp back to.

      For me and many other "explorer"-type players, the planets themselves are what there is to explore on the planets.
      I never built anything in minecraft outside of temporary shacks as I roamed the world for hours at a time seeing what interesting terrain would spawn in, and this was before the updates that added things like temples and villages and whatnot.
      'Many years ago the great British explorer George Mallory, who was to die on Mount Everest, was asked why did he want to climb it. He said "Because it is there." Well, space is there, and we're going to climb it, and the moon and the planets are there'

      But what's the point of vehicles then? Planets are the same all over, so all you need to do is land, walk around a little bit, and then take off again, no driving around needed.

      It isn't even a bad game, really. People are just mad that it was overhyped and pushed out too soon by Sony. If it had come out and hadn't been hyped at all, loads of people would've called it a hidden gem. It's just that the hype overgrew the actual game, and the devs were forced to release it before they could catch up.

      There are some of them now , i just met a giant "triceratops" , my rover was as tall as his head and no more , it should mesure 10-15 m and when i scanned it , it says mass :923 kg.
      I only found one of them in 20 h since the new patch , i wish it wasn't a bug.

      Scott Manley yeah, some of the stuff in the trailers were amazing, but exploring in the real game kindof just feels like looking at different combinations of creature parts you've already seen a hundred times

    By the way, as of when this video went up, Hello games announced that they are working on putting exocrafts on multiple planets in the experimental version of the game and once it is stable, this feature will be brought into the full game.

    As long as they keep making some improvements, I'm pretty confident in buying it on a good sale sometime. I never expected much from it, but I'm very glad to see them putting in post launch effort to make up for all the broken promises and mixed signals, instead of abandoning it and running with the profits.

      No, he didn't. He has always said that the game is about exploration, not an FPS. The community just gets on this circlejerk assuming the devs are money-grabbing liars, when in reality, the community just has no idea what the game is actually supposed to be, and the devs were pushed by Sony to meet a deadline they weren't prepared to meet, resulting in an unfinished game that, even if it was finished, wouldn't meet the expectations of the community because, again, no one can comprehend what they've been saying all along, that it is first-and-foremost an exploration game.

      Sective Apologize for them all you want. It wasn't the community who repeatedly answered yes when asked if there would be multiplayer. It wasn't the community who said there would be a faction system that you could buddy up and choose sides. It wasn't the community who said the ship's would be and play different depending on the class of ship. It wasn't the community who said there would be desert planets water planets, etc.
      It doesn't matter if they meant to be money grubbing or not. They took your money promising a complete game slunk off while everyone found out how incomplete the game was and then started bringing you the rest of the unfinished game back piecemeal.
      The rage wouldn't have been anywhere near the level it was if at any point they were honest to their customers and said "look we aren't ready to launch but because everyone wants it so bad we're gonna release it on early access and continue to work on it, if you pre-ordered and you don't want to buy the game on Early Access cancel your pre-order and come back when the game is more complete."
      But they stayed silent on the matter and watched as the train came off the rails and crashed with all their customers in it.

    Technically, CGA allowed you to specify any colour (not just black) for the background colour in either of its four colour modes, and it also offered a green/red/yellow palette as well as the magenta/cyan/white one. People hardly ever used the other palette, though, not sure why.

    I'm waiting for the "Gamechanger" update... with multiplayer, portals, satisfying game progression, interesting non-repetitive planets, and something actually worth going to the center of the galaxy for...

    Such a good and underrated game... With each update it's becoming a more and more solid experience. One day this game will be viewed by all as something fantastic that grew from a shaky launch.

    If you look at the "experimental branch " on steam , rovers are no longer limited to your home planet . You can create a summon point on ANY planet so you can explore them (and this is highly addictive ).
    I wish this feature will arrive soon ingame.

    Thank you for keeping an eye on this one. I got bored of it quite fast and I just don't seem to find the willingness to turn it on again unless there is a major update in which I could dive for at least a few hours.
    Oh well, thankfully no dust can accumulate upon a digital library.

    One thing I've learned about the classes of vehicles and multi-tools is that the A class is best. For example, I found a multi-tool, within a few hours with a new character, on the wall in an Operations Centre that was a class A Experimental with bonuses of Damage +29%, Mining +66%, and Scanning +86%.

    It's nice to see this game still receiving support, it's really improving from the mess it was a release. Definitely time to reinstall it for my PS4 and do some exploring.

    The cga pallete actually worked really well when put over composite cables, artefacts created by groups of colours could make greens, reds, purples, blues. the 8bitguy had an interesting video on it

    It sounds like soon we'll be able to build the ground vehicles on any planet, and not just the bases. The Steam experimental version lists that in the patch notes (according to the subreddit).

    It saddens me that the over hype and over marketing of NMS has maybe ruined the space sim genre for the masses. Since the financial successes of ED and SC there have been a lot more production companies willing to throw some money into space sim games which is great! I don't expect space sims to ever be on the same popularity level as FPS games or anything (the average complexity of a good space sim is typically a rough barrier to entry for most) but has been nice to see space sims trending on steam. I'm sure you've taken a look at it but if you haven't you should check out Everspace scott its a freelancer feeling rouge-like that is really enjoyable and pretty!

      I think the success of Elite Dangerous has a lot of people still happy. NMS is more a cautionary tale about overselling your product and managing expectations from indie developers.

      I think NMS probably never really struck people as a space sim type game, not even before release, so I don't think it impacted that genre much at all. Games like ED, even though the playerbase is not huge, seem to have the same kind of success as EVE Online - smaller player/fanbase than their genre-giants, but the people who actually play it, oh boy do they love it. And it has a really fantastic development team as well, so, I think the space sim genre is quite healthy.
      It remains to be seen what Star Citizen ends up doing, if it ever actually comes out, before this decade is out...

      Elite: Dangerous sales went way up the week that NMS flopped. A lot of people got the bug to play a space sim, and NMS didn't satisfy that itch.

      true enough i suppose it was kinda marketed more as a survival sandbox type game. And Boy Howdy does it not satisfy that space sim itch, I'll play it every once and awhile but more for planet exploration than space exploration, for that I'll always go and chill and fly my ship around ED

    Just in case people didn't know, you can use the Exocraft on any planet, you just need to plonk a spawn pad. You can only have one pad in the universe at any one time though.

    I looked at Steam this weekend, and I saw NMS at 40% off, and I thought "Oh, cool, NMS is on sale, I'll buy Astroneer".
    You think I was gonna buy No Man's Sky? Maybe knock it to under £15/$20 and slap a massive Early Access banner on it and I'll consider it.
    Astroneer is awesome, by the way. It is more No Man's Sky than No Man's Sky is.

    I feel like the photo abilities this game has is a perfect metaphor for it... something which is essentially pointless, looks pretty, and is fun for about half an hour.
    Another year of hard work, and this game will perhaps be what it was supposed to be... or someone can sort out how to make the universe not be a bunch of locked spheres and actually exist as an entire thing (so you can fly into the sun if you want to), and then perhaps it'll be worth playing for a while.

    CGA had lots of colors if used through composite cable - color mixing. Nobody did though as text was unreadable in that mode, so only white, black cyan and magenta is what people remember CGA for.

    Honestly I think if they just tried to get a good modding system out there and just worked on performance and graphics and stuff, the community would probably take care of all of the content that they don't have for them. If they made stuff like the procedural generation systems and the physics engine and stuff easier for the community to access they'd probably pretty easily be able to make this a great game. It's not like this type of system hasn't been done before, either, so.

    Not sure if you're still playing NMS or not Scott but if you want to build vehicles on other planets the experimental build on steam allows you to do just that, also I love NMS at about 135 hours so far and many more to come also to get into the experimental branch the code is 3xperimental

    Scott did you ever play an old freeware DOS game called Noctis? You played as an alien with a ship and all you did was warp around and explore weird alien planets, no combat or resource gathering aside from fuel for your ship.
    I tried No Mans Sky, and while it can't compare to real space sims like Elite, I enjoy wasting a couple hours at a time in NMS because it's like an updated version if Noctis.

    CGA had two different graphic modes; RGBI and composite. RGBI was the one with the super basic and really odd color schemes, but it was for businesses, who were primarily working with text and numbers in spreadsheets and stuff. The composite blended those basic colors and intensities to create loads more colors for pretty good graphics for games and stuff, but it made text a bit crap.

    Its cool that they're releasing these for free. My main issue with the game isn't the lack of content, its the fact that it runs like garbage on PC. I mean, who wouldn't want Space Engine but with walking?

    I still REALLY want a travel trail on the map for all the places I have been. My travel feels like it has no context since I never know where I really came from. (Waypoint Routes reset to shortest distance, so over long journeys you still lose track of where you came from)

    Yes, in an exploration game, you want gotta plant a one-time base on a planet so you can use the exploration ground vehicles. BRILLIANT!
    This game is like pushing a boulder up a mountain. Progress is grueling and probably not worth it when there are other better games doing the same thing.

      Looks pretty good in 4K. And graphics quality isn't everything, often the terrain and just ambience of the generation makes it beautiful in a way that even hyperrealistic graphics can't.

    the "depth of field" did not "work" for you because DOF really only applies when you have a closeup on something in the foreground and something distant.. not a wide angle shot of everything.

    The problem is that they released it as "full game" when it should've been considered alpha stage. It's slowly becoming a beta. It has a huge potential but needs a story line with missions and things to do along with the functions you have in other multiplayer games.

    i dont doubt that someone hasnt already made a mod to where you can hail your buggy from anywhere, seeing as it has a range limit on it. Also wouldn't doubt that there wouldn't also bee some other tweaks you could do.

    Scott you can use on any planet you delete the pad there on, then go to any planet build the pad, then hit x and deploy done :)

    I have over 200 hours in i and still playing. But it,s funny, I player last week, before they update, and I don,t follow the news so I didn' t know. I fire up the game, one week later (last week en), and OH! NEW STUFF!! so it was a nice surprise. The only draw back as the vehicle you cannot spawn on other planet, but they already fixed that. New store, new upgrades, new resources, new freighter ( although I still have the 13 slot on, the first I rented because never really need one), there's a HUGE i think 30 slot one. Huge like a star destroyer, pretty impressive when you fight pirates around it.
    I liked it a lauch and I still like this game, now I don't care about the haters. People ( and the devs, yes) over-hyped it, and now the "bad reputation" is also overhyped and overdone, just play and enjoy. Relaxing and fun.
    I don't care about multiplayer in this game. That's one of he reaons the reason I play NMS, to NOT have anybody around. sometime, you just feel like not interacting with other players, gamers can be such a drag sometimes LOL ( I include myself in that by the way ;-)).
    Anyway great overview.

      Fran Couz No, it really isn't at all. Pathfinder is a term that's been around for ages, meaning someone or something that finds paths. The update (to an exploration game) adds more vehicles. There's a very obvious correlation there that has nothing to do with Mass Effect.

      Sective just happens to release a week before Andromeda of which a Pathfinder is the main character and No Man's Sky also happens to add a land cruising vehicle not too dissimilar to the Nomad. Okay there bud.

    Don't know if its the FOV or the motion blur I can't watch this for more than 5 minutes without feeling sick. The 3rd person view on the vehicles helps a bit. Notice it still has loading issues as you drive about.

    people are bound to exploit the ability to change the lighting in photo mode. Imagine you're in the dark and can see nothing, then you can just change fee lighting lol

    So you can only use vehicles on your bases. Wouldn't it be better to have the vehicles be an orbital drop from your freighter, or have a special class of ship that can carry a vehicle. Then you can use it on any planet if you have the money to get those things.

    i don't know about other people but i'll get NMS soon. maybe april or may. march is for ME Andromeda and other stuff ^^
    it was pretty clear that there's "nothing" to do, before release they always talked about the same things that would be boring after a few hours. that's why i didn't pre-order/buy it. now that i've seen that the devs care for their game and keep adding stuff, i don't see why i shouldn't get the game, seems great :)

    I need to buy this game, looks like one ill actually enjoy playing, i can handle tedious grinding games well i feel like I can handle anything now after playing wurm unlimited for the past 2 days. Cool video man. I dont look at this game as dirt like the haters do if anything this game only pushes people to be more ambitious with their games. Maybe its the kick up the butt gaming needed
