I've always felt the closest game you can compare NMS to is Minecraft which might seem wild but bare with me.
NMS is a sandbox game where the ways to play feels endless. The goals are set by yourself and the options you have are vast and constantly evolving. There is no right way to play NMS like there's no right way to play Minecraft.
Add in the fact there's regular updates dropped all for free for everyone. The game is forever growing and changing.

Just a few answers to some of your questions. It's a "tell your own story" kindof thing, you do eventually find out stuff about your character, but it's never anything super specific. The oxygen thing is important, you do have to refuel everything, so inventory management is kindof a key thing about the game. Base building can be fun if that's your thing, and has its own quest line, and it's also how you get vehicles besides your ship. Yes you can customize your character, but currently it's only cosmetic. Almost everything is procedural, the solar systems, planets, space stations, multi-tools, creatures, etc. The only things that aren't procedural are base items, the starter ship, rewards from expeditions, twitch drops, and other stuff you can get from the anomaly. Finally, there are no "expansions", they are all free updates that automatically apply, one of the very few companies that is actually consumer friendly.

The Lore is so scattered it can be hard to piece together but the Lore of your character and all travelers is that basically you’re all the same person. Atlas was designed to algorithmically plot out the universe using known science of the far future making it basically omniscient. The purpose was to find a suitable planet for humanity to move to. However they couldn’t take Atlas with them so the creator decided to allow it to stay on and create its own universes so it wouldn’t be alone. The creator asked if it needed anything else and it asked to copy their brain so they could always be with them and they agreed. Thus creating The Traveller a Digital copy of the creator translated into the myriad of universes. However during the time of the game the Sun has turned into a Black Hole and The Atlas has only 16 minutes left before it dies. Within it’s own computing the Time Dilation is so great that those 16 minutes probably millions of years. Atlas I’m it’s grief has stopped maintaining its simulations which to everyone else makes it seem like some sort of cruel God.

The "expansions" are updates with a lot of new content or changes that go beyond what a patch would. These are therefore all integrated to the main game, free of charge. In fact, this is probably one of the few multiplayer AAA games that don't have in-game purchases: you cannot pay-to-win, everything is earned by gameplay.

On the ship handling, from what I remember, it depends on what type of ship (freighter vs fighter or others) and the rank of that ship (everyone starts with a C class, he did a quest for the B class). higher ranks have higher stats. Plus, you can install upgrades and mods to further improve ships. If you're attached to a ship for some reason but it's falling behind in stats, you can upgrade it over time to stay relevant.

Dude!! You're in for a Fantastic Space Adventure! I have over 1000 hours into No Man's Sky, and even I haven't seen absolutely everything that there is to see! My only complaint with the game is that it is way too easy, as they just sort of hand you the key's to the kingdom without much effort... but where you CAN sink a lot of time is by setting huge goals for yourself, or by seeking out extremely unique or powerful guns, ships, and Freighters. Also there is a cosmetic's store in game that takes a ton of effort to acquire the quicksilver (in game currency) in order to unlock bad ass or silly suit, base, and ship cosmetics and decorations. so how far you take your game play is up to you. This game is a Min-maxer's wet dream! you can become almost God-like in your power and lethality with enough focused and persistent efforts, however your power is always technologically based... (no jedi-like powers sadly) the combat is a bit lack-luster and all too easy to just avoid if you're not in the mood (that's a good and bad thing). It strongly helps to have a strong imagination when playing this game if you want to squeeze out the maximum enjoyment possible from No Man's Sky. Get lost in this space fantasy, and get immersed into living the life of an individual who possesses a hyper-advanced, nanite-based, self healing and all environment survival suit, and an interstellar space ship able to take you literally anywhere. Enjoy the beautiful desolate cosmic loneliness feeling that this game provides. take the time to stop and smell the Grawberries and don't rush to finish this masterpiece! Also, pro tip: Turn off "ship tethering" in the options in order to enable tight mouse steering of your ship. Tethering turned on means you need to move your mouse to the side of the screen center in order to finally move the ship... this default setting is quite annoying imo.

Some of my favorite memories were that I'd be exploring a planet and then find a wrecked ship. Could be a fighter or freighter or another class, but you could repair it where it was damaged to get it to minimum flight requirements or repair entirely. If you wanted to just scrap it later, there were vendors you could sell ships to. And if you were on a station, you could choose what ship you wanted to fly based on the ships you had.

In successive playthrus this gets significantly faster as you learn how to get more early materials much, much faster in much larger quantities. But, those basic concepts are key to figuring out everything else.

The story behind No Man's Sky and why it was a disaster at launch is pretty amazing. So the developers are indy devs from england and there was a flood that happened days before launch destroying their laptops. So the version they had to release was an old version because all the work they had put in was gone due to the flood. That's when they decided to do free dlc, updates, and expansions for everyone who purchases the game. They have lived up to that to this day, once you buy the game you get every update, expansion dlc, patch, etc... for free!

Those 18 quintillion planets are distributed over 256 galaxies in-game. However, not all planets and systems are enabled by default - it's the theoretical maximum. About 60% of that number is directly accessible, the rest you can enable through mods if you are so inclined. The Stargates on every planet I always found to be a nice touch, even with something like the DHD to enter the address.

this is a huge compensation that nms has glitch bilding ..if I load up my nms it almost looks like cyber punk ..so that is also nice ..that the learning curve is specific to how deep you want to go..
if elite dangerous is dusty and leaning curve is huge..it bores a lot...but that if thats done good..its like metal gear solid snake..the bodring stuf tat takes time is addicting if its the right way done...if elite dangous had erotica ..and atmospheres...

I'm a huge space game fan too. I have 1,000 hours in NMS and about that many in Knights of the Old Republic. But what game do I have 8k hours in? Empyrion Galactic Survival. Did you play with Legos as a kid, I loved building spaceships but you can't just get in them and fly away. In Empyrion, you can. I play on a multiplayer server that runs the RE mod, 20k actual star systems, each one with planets and moons and asteroid belts. over 9 alien races to be friends or enemies with. And here is the kicker... So many Star Wars fans who fly Star Wars ships, all created by players. You can play single-player or multi-player. There are hundreds of servers to play on and things you make can be saved as a blueprint on the Steam workshop. You can download the creations of others to bring into your game. Great video btw I like your enthusiasm.

Ya I'd like to see you make a video on it. The game is AMAZING, and bro you will see things you never even thought of because the random generator builds _everything_ . There are so many times I was like "WTF is THAT !?! "
The hardest part of the game is the beginning, because you start with almost nothing, and the tutorial teaches you the ultra basics of the game. Yes, oxygen and protection are something you need to maintain; its easy though. If you steal the Gravitino ball its worth a lot of money but local sentinals will attack you. No, all the expansions are part of/enhance the base game. The plot/storyline isn't like D&D, and in fact the storyline is not what makes this game good, it's everything else:
Warp, Fly, Land, Walk, Drive, Creature Ride, Swim on any planet, throughout countless solar systems... explore everywhere in 3rd or 1st person
    - Find scorching planets with volcanos, toxic infestations & rain, freezing tornado blizzards, and tropical paradises with stunning night sky or with lightning. Even has meteor strikes!
    - Dive in caves and find mysterious objects or dig your own den to avoid the dangers outside.
    - Meet aliens, discover their culture, learn their history & language, help them with missions. Discuss opportunities or places to discover.
    - Discover strange monsters including sandworms & dinosaurs, black market traders and crashed derelicts as you travel across an infinite space. Capture the monsters and use them as pets to help you on your journey.
    - Build bases anywhere with multiple floors for anything you want. Teleport to them with ease and store resources as you explore the galaxy
    - Setup the electronics in each base with lights, switches and proximity sensors. Party it up with your new light and DJ show or setup electronics to open things automatically
    - Cook meals for you and your guests with crafted meal recipes from animals you herded yourself on your farm. Enjoy the bonus from eating various ingredient combinations
    - Trade throughout the universe; buy stock items and warp between Space stations, Airports and minor settlements to make money
    - Or become a fighter and hunt traders, other pirates, or the law. Use an emergency jump and get the hell outta there
    - Get an Aircraft Carrier (Freighter) to store your Fighters, Haulers and Exploration vessels. Customize the floating base with your own personal rooms and equipment. Trade with aliens that land in your new Mother Ship, invite them as Wingmen, or buy their ships out completely
    - Build up your fleet of Cruisers to protect you and the Carrier. Send them out to various missions and reap the rewards or suffer the damage from mistakes
    - Land directly on the Cruisers of your fleet and gather their profits or explore their engine room to repair the damage
    - Upgrade your Carrier, ships, vehicles, guns & backpack with better shields, weapons, and storage space.
    - Join multiplayer in all of the above and blow your mind.

Originally, my PC couldn't play NMS so I got it on PS4 (Disk Version- which I still use) I really liked the options available when I first started for exploration, building etc. After playing for about 3 months I had a game-breaking bug. I was digging a huge ore vein (like a mid sized skyscraper tall, but mostly buried in the ground. When I had nearly got it all & dug too deep, I fell through the texture underneath me & into the core of the planet- I respawned under the ground & fell towards the core. I was so freaked out I forgot the PC rule- Kill the process. By the time I remembered & I reloaded; I fell instantly. My autosave saved with me clipped under the ground texture.< "Core Cage" bug > And PS4 only allowed 1 save (unlike the PC version). I was so mad the game, it sat in it's box until late last year.
I knew it had a lot of updates & bugfixes & gave it another shot. This time around I played in VR Around the first hour was slow, then I built a small base & started automating the refining of elements while I did other things- The planet was mildly hostile & enviornmental conditions felt like california during fire season. But despite this I kept coming back because it was so rich with resources.
When I finally left a few hours later, (this was in 4-5 sessions over a couple of days, not all at once) I looked around & had genuinely Jaw-Dropping WOW or Oh Sh|t moments- I had no Idea it would look that good in VR. It gave me feelings of nostalga from Digital Anvil's Freelancer game + X3 + Eve Online all wrapped into one.
From Space whales to living ships, "mountable pokemon" you can upgrade & add storage, tools & even weapons too.
ExoSuit Mech's you pilot & like 6 other vehicles not including personal ships, freighters etc. This game has it all- Most importantly; I haven't had a bug that didn't get resolved by reloading the game, & none were game breaking / past the point of no return. If I play something else, It will be because I want a change of pace or genre, not because I'm bored or got tired of the game. It just hits different now.
If I want a different pace: Astroneer, Subnautiica or S-Below Zero, If I wanna play out of genre, I'll play Dyson Sphere Program, Factorio, Autonauts, TerraTech, Trailmakers, Homeworld 3, or one of the Creeper World series.

I have over 200 hours into this game. You can do so much and I've never seen the "same" planet twice. Sure, they can be similar but no two planets are exactly the same. No two solar systems are the same either. Once you pan out from your current system, you'll see thousands of nearby solar systems. You'll also see the galaxy core in the distance and can map your way to it. Its a journey tho....you usually spawn over 700,000 light years from the core. There are also ten universes / galaxies. The only way to move to another galaxy is to reach the core and enter it. You'll teleport to the next galaxy with your gear partially damaged. there are shortcuts to the core, but you'll have to find that one out for yourself :)
You cannot walk around in your ship but you can get a freighter that you can run around in. The freighter can become your space home and can also hold all of your ships.
The craziest part to me is that you can play the same save file in VR. I'm not sure about console, but I can play in VR on steam OR play with the controlller / keyboard on my PC.
Expansions / updates change the entire game...basically. They just add stuff periodically.

No man's sky has turned into my favourite game of all time. Especially after the last few updates. The multiplayer community is 👌 too. My best journey in the game was my journey to Eisentam Galaxy (the paradise galaxy).
My journey spanned 10 galaxies and millions of lightyears and took more hours than I'd care to think 😂. Along the way players had left bases, supplies and messages for me who have been on their own adventures.
When I reached about the 8th galaxy I came to realise all the players who came before me were heading to the same place by reading the messages left behind. Once I reached the final galactic core there were messages congratulating on my monumental journey to the promised land and welcoming me to the Eisentam before I took the final warp to bring me to the paradise galaxy.
I'd honestly say this is probably the best moment/achievement I've made in gaming and it was totally 1000000000% worth it.
I have since built a base and settlement in Eisentam so I can return there whenever I want via the portal

You can be a smuggler, you can rescue stranded lifeforms, you can trench-run a destroyer just like the Death Star, you can manage your own settlement, you can build your own city-sized bases, you can choose to follow the story line or not. Truly open world space exploration rpg. And it just keeps getting better FOR FREE. Updates do not cost extra. Bought this game on sale 6 years ago and haven't had to spend a dime on it since then.

Agreed. In case you play it, as long time player, I'm gonna give you some non spoiler tips, please read, it'll really improve your game :
    - sometimes on planets you will find crates and stuff with "Rusted metal" in them. You usually think you should throw it away coz it's just scrap but actually keep it because when you refine it (refine is basically the furnace from minecraft for this game) it becomes a good load of ferrite dust which is important for alot of building.
    - Sell Salvaged data modules. At first you'll need them to unlock a load of basebuilding parts but after you unlocked all or as many basepartd as you want, still loot and collect them because they're worth ALOT of money when you sell them.
    - Weird one but hold down S (or whatever the alternative is on console) when in spaceship combat to automatically lock on to enemy ships. I use to not know this and trying to follow an ai ship can be a nightmare without this because they fly around very fast so it's tricky to get a good shot without.
    - do the "artemis" story when it comes to you. It unlocks all the "glyphs" and glyphs are important to the game in allowing you a VERY useful function you'll find out when you play
    - don't spam fire in space. Sometimes you could accidentally shoot a ship or space station and they'll turn against you.
I could provide more but there's literally too many. So yeah there you go. Please play, you'll love it. And enjoy.

Hey, if you ever run into a player with the name Marz, however stylized, say hey! I can maybe hook you up with a sick sentinel ship (name your favorite color) and help you claim it or go on a quest or two. So many things you can do, it's crazy. I play in VR too (its got full VR support), so I can do amusing gestures and grab the flight stick in my ship. Lotta people got into NMS since Starfield released. I'm hella happy about that, cause I got into it pretty hardcore. I just need them to make the chat system a little better. Thankfully, they stay really in-tune with the community and are always fixing things and adding new content. On the latest update, they added a whole new race to the game that you can play as, do missions for, etc, as well as staves.
Edit: Oh, and you can def satisfy your Han Solo. They got Outlaw stations and missions you can go on that are off-the-grid, including smuggling. Makes you feel like a real space pirate. You can also do bounty hunting.

I‘d love to see a NMS let’s play from you!
The ship maneuverability can be improved by installing tech upgrades and upgrading the ship‘s class (classes range from C to S). Solar ships especially have huge maneuverability when fully upgraded. You can also set the ship to move directly with the cursor or to follow it with a slight delay in the settings.
Also, when walking around on a planet you may find that even sprinting is a bit slow. To get forward faster you can activate your jetpack and press the melee attack button at the same time to give you an extra speed boost.

I didn't buy it because im not into space exploration... but when my friend bought it, I was actually curious if it is actually good, I bought the game and yes it is really really GREAT. If you really into space exploration this is the game that you would want to play or to have. We only scratched like 0.1% of the game and we are still discovering things. I played for almost 90 hours in the game but I am still learning and discovering things. The possibility of this game is endless, you can just spend hours in space exploration or planet exploration like you can explore the entire planet, ENTIRE planet. I just don't see other open world games let you do all of those things. Im excited to see the status of this game for the next 5 years, I hope the devs can add new things to the game because it has potential. I hope you bought this game because you will enjoy it.

From what I know right now, I'd bet you'll love this game.
I've been playing for about a month or so and it didn't let me go at all. Every day is a new experience, I figure out new stuff, I see new planets, I understand the kosmos of the game a little bit better. First I started on my laptop which doesn't have a real gpu, so I had to play with very low settings. Still the game hooked me from the beginning.
Then I just started a new savegame on my PS5 and it's amazing. The two experiences are so different already, it's a whole different story.
I love this game and I love that there is still so much to discover.
I think this is ist. It's the game I was looking for the whole time. I wanted a game with long progress, where I can come back over and over and keep playing it whenever I want to take a break from other, maybe more story driven games.
I first tried different MMOs, but I'm not the online kind of player.
No Man's Sky offers pretty much all I want from a game, I even have the oportunity to play with other people, but the game doesn't force me to.
It feels so good, I love this game.
    Cheers.

NMS is sort of "space lite". It doesn't quite follow the rules of real space in that systems have planets in configurations that aren't really orbits, and their terrain isn't as varied as you would think (I don't believe they have tectonic plates, which means no clear continents separated by oceans and the terrain remains similar all across the surface)... things like that. But there are definitely a lot of things to do, and you can make your own goals and decide how you want to play. Cross-platform play is wonderful! All platforms can team up with each other. And when you start getting tired of some things, the devs come out with brand new content. It's quite amazing.

Other than that it's pretty good at some mechanics in space but I prefer Starfield's expanse world that somehow feels bigger than even NMS just with the people in there and the choices you make making a difference even withing a much more confined universe.

Not true, if you do not delete your base in the first galaxy, you can travel back to it at any time, from either the Anomaly or a new base in the new galaxy. Many people, about 90% of players do travel back to the first galaxy, as that is where most of the player base embark on the community weekend missions. In older versions of the game, you could not travel back to the first galaxy, but now you can freely travel between different galaxies that you have visited and built a base in.

I bought NMS a few years ago on sale. For me it's not my forever game, but I find it entertaining enough that I'll lose a few weeks to it two or three times a year. If there's anything that looks interesting but you're not sure, pick it up at the next sale. NMS is typically 50% off during major Steam sales.
One of the settings I love in Creative Mode is the ability to turn off base power. So you still need full resources to build your base, but you don't need to worry about balancing power in and out. You also, and this is the reason I use it, don't need to worry about hooking up wires between everything.

dude, I feel the same 'bout Space. I bought this game 2 weeks ago. It is cool, stoped few days ago because I died and lost all my stuff. But I know now that you can pick it up on location of death. A Star Wars mod would be cool as well.

If you're obsessed with space - check out Space Engine (not Space Engineers, although that one is pretty cool too). I wouldn't necessarily call it a game, but more like... Interactive 3D space exhibit? I'm not even sure, BUT - there are tons of real stars, planets and moons you can fly to and on to, and even more generated stars, planets and moons. And it's BEAUTIFUL. You can catch some truly magnificent frames in that thing, and if you have a powerful machine with a bunch of RAM - crank up render distances for even better results. There's not much to do there, except fly around as a floating camera and look at stuff, but I'd be lying if I didn't spend hours doing just that :v

I got so lucky with this game. I avoided the hype and bought it when the price crashed for 15 euro. I almost feel bad because the fun I have had with this game was worth so much more. My son brought over his VR and I even got to play it that way.

So about the ships and flight... there are several types of ship that have different bonuses attatched to them, and all models can be found in C class up to S class. Obviously the S class has better base stats. Its all on what RNJesus blesses you with. But if you see a model you like, just wait and it will come in at a better class for you. And there are 1000s of models. Its all procedural.
But you can upgrade everything and make it insanely powerful and fast.
And you can own 8 other ships and keep them in your frieghter.
There is barrel rolls, quick turns, reverse thrusters... the sentinel interceptors can go full hover, even in atmosphere. Theres like 6 types of weapons, all upgradeable. Better shields, super long range hyperdrive... its nuts.

5:15 for example I just played normal rules but changed it so that reputation is faster gathered and enemy dmg is lower. The custom difficulty is the best

I play both games. If Starfield is "Space Skyrim": RPG, focus on story; No Man Sky is "Space Minecraft": mining, crafting and survival,.

I have been playing since Day 1, And I really loved it back then. First Person and so much grinding, single player, And with all the updates for free it has progressed well. I disagree with the video saying the beginning is boring, I restarted my games so many times and I love the start you have to work at it hard to get to enjoy the later stuff.

If there was a game out there that had the exploration/visuals of No Man's Sky but the ship mechanics and space physics of Elite: Dangerous... we'd have a perfect space game.

I held off on buying no mans sky after the bad launch but on xbox, i mainly played Elite Dangerous which is a much more realistic space game but after the developers for Elite cancelled all further development for Elite, I had no choice but to turn to No Man's Sky and wow what an experience it was. The sights i've seen were incredible and sometimes, genuinely breathtaking to the point where i would actually just look out to the horizon for a few minutes and walking around. I now have a PC and picked up Elite Dangerous again but I actually miss playing No Man's Sky. I'm actually going to get it again on my PC to scratch that deep explorers itch. Hello Games redemption should set as an example to the rest of the industry.

There is over 99+ galaxies in the game and each one has a nearly endless open world selection of solar systems to travel to and between. With as many different planets as play styles…

You cannot explore inside your starship but you can in your freighter which are the giant dreadnought like ships. You can even build inside them. I built a city on one

If you love space you should play Outer Wilds. It has a take on space that's not as focused on the tech but on the immensity of space itself and some of it's most impressive and terrifying aspects. Don't want to spoil the experience since it's so precious, but totally worth it.

You can customize your character. Just not when you first create them. Once you get to like the "Player Hub Ship" you can change your characters look and species to your liking them.

I saw a comment that you've got some hours in NMS already, have you tried the pirate dreadnought battles yet to save a civilian fleet? Most people say that is one of the most star wars-esque parts of the game
