I can’t believe GM let them get away with it. They generally didn’t let anything in their line up outperform the Corvette. Or at least Pontiac was never allowed to.🤔
Turbocharged Darth Vader is TERRIFYINGLY accurate. 😂 EDIT: For anyone who didn't get the joke, Darth Vader always has his ventilator on, and a turbocharger is also basically a car's inhaler.
Very few people realize how bad ass and innovative Buick was back in the day. The GN and GNX are true bad asses in every regard, and the '70 GSX is an absolute monster and holds the title of "hemi killer" for a reason.
My dream car since I got my license. One of my neighbors always had one and I fell in love when he finally finished refurbishing it. The thing looked like it belonged at the bottom of a lake and when he finished, it looked brand new.
What's funny is the n/a version of that motor was put into absolutely everything in the 90s and early 2000s often with a factory supercharger, it's just the 3800. And the camaro from 1995 and on came with the rwd fuel injected one and those things love boost, get parts for em at zzp

@JayCee-zs6pp it's a certified classic sports car with interesting lore and that specific car has only 30 miles on it, why in the hell would you expect something like that to be "affordable" to the average person. I don't understand people like you.

Like when oldsmobile took the Chevy small block and reworked it, like reverse flow cooling, etc and smoked anything Chevy could do with it. There was a lot of that at GM back then, leads to Innovation and lot's of fun
Honestly the better iteration of this idea would be the 1989 pontiac trans am turbo. The TAT had the same turbo 3.8L of the gnx but even better with like sodium filled exaust valves larger intercooler and duel knock boxes for more accurate ignition timing. Combine that with the 3rd gen transam being the most aerodynamic car gm has produced ever and it was a force tk be reckoned with.
This video didn't have anything to do with the aerodynamics though... It's about the speed and engineering that went into this Buick and it tops any Pontiac, I am an absolute huge fan of Pontiac, but the firebird had nothing on the GNX
You have never driven a GM G-Body, I take it :p . I have an 80 Cutlass Cruiser I used to daily. That thing was like a ballerina in the snow! I learned car control with that old dog, and now I drive what is essentially a Miata. The 50/50 weight ratio actually throws me off when I try to slide, but is easier to control when I do it accidentally, lol.
Sweet Ride. Even some of the 1990s Regals were absolute sleepers with more boost and tune. Driven em and they were quick for a front wheel drive Buick. lol
My neighbor Hector had a grand national in the 80s. He would drive me in it and it was a instant 30 miles an hour superfast. May you rest in peace Hector .
way back in 1984, my neighbor, who was an engineer with General Motors had one of these and took me for a ride. You can't believe the power this turbo V6 could produce. His own brother had a '67 427 cid Corvette that couldn't keep up. Legend!
The 84 was a non intercooled engine and was noticeably slower then the 86-87 models. These early models were referred to as hot air cars lol. Definitely not a fast car. Lol. They were only 200 hp.
Had an 87 Grand National. Bought it off a guy at Ft Bragg who was headed for a hardship tour in Korea. The car was set up. It would definitely bring a smile to your face.
That turboed motor was first started back in the late 70's, turned out well. Wish the turbo 301 would have been continued, pontiac needed something different from typical GM motors.
Definitely 1 of the most slept on 2nd gen muscle cars of all time💯!!! My godfather had 1 when I was a kid & I swear this man spent a ridiculous amount of money back in the day to hook his National up after he bought it.. I still remember how scary that car was when he opened it up on a straight away🤯.... I definitely wouldn't mind buying 1 myself & hookin it up 1day...
I worked in GM Dealerships as a Technician when they first came out. They were very well designed and they made a lot of horse power for being a v6.I will give them a lot of credit for what they did with the Ttype and Grandnational.
I have always loved their look! My dad used to tell me stories of when he was a teen they were the fastest car you could buy. But his 74 nova was faster with a 350 built for racing long hours on tracks. I absolutely love those two cars novas and grand nationals
There was a guy around the streets in my area back in the late 90's with a Grand National. His licence plate was "1SLOWV6". It ran mid-low 10s, which isn't overly impressive today, but that was ridiculously fast for a street car in the 90s..... I really wish I would have bought a couple of these cars back then when they were still reasonably cheap to acquire.
I owned one. A fact that was left out, was that some geographical locations had limiter chips in the electronics, preventing the car from going faster than 125Mph. there were alternative chips that removed that restriction. In car buff circles, this was referred to as the "The American Sport Chip" which let you go up to and including the point where your sphincter puckered. I had one. 169Mph on the highway. Second fun fact - a variant of the one shown had a t-roof. Idiots would show up at the drag strips and take the T roof elements out, thinking the less weight = faster car. The issue was they forgot about wind. Taking the roof elements out, allowed air to travel into the car, getting caught in the rear window area which acted like a parachute. Final fun fact - there were a variety of molding and accent variants. I know this because i escaped going to jail, because everyone knew my car had none of these. The arresting officer even testified to that effect :)
Grew up in those times 87-95 had a notch mustang with all the bolt ons there was a big rivalry on the streets between GN and fox bodies back then on the streets of telegraph near Detroit early on the GN boys Didn’t really know how to get the most out of there turbos the foxes really ruled the streets in that era too cheap and too many of them a couple of Gm engineers use to come out on the weekends with a modified syclone and kick all our asses. The premier of the Pontiac Tempest GTO in 1964 was represented by the #50 Pontiac Tempest with a 421 cubic inch super duty Pontiac V8 producing 405 horsepower, which in 1964 was an insane amount. This car was dubbed the first Pontiac GTO ever produced and had its first major race in the 100 lap American Challenge Cup hosted at Daytona Speedway just 2 weeks before the Daytona 500. It went up against 2 E type Jaguars, 5 Ferraris, and 4 Corvettes, 2 of those being Z06s. The #50 car was photographed leading the other racers at the starting line in one of the most famous photos of a race hosted at Daytona. It held that spot and never gave it up. It finished the race with almost a quarter of the track between it and 2nd place which was one of the Corvette Z06s. I still remember the day my Uncle traded his ‘70 Cuda for one of these brand new. Everyone told him he was nuts but he didn’t care. He still has it in his garage to this day. With 1,700 miles…
There's a few timeless cars that stand above all and should always be produced to some extent. Shelby Cobra, 63 Corvette, Jag E Type... and this Buick is right there in that class. Pure unmatched icon.
Mike Doble was GM GURU that orchestrated build of GNX WITH McLaren and ASC. International Design Group led by Mark Trostle Senior. Believe 557 GNX were produced .
547 for the GNX (officially) 😉 Over 20,000 1987 GNs were built, plus an undetermined amount of Turbo-Ts. What I liked about them so much was that Buick did NOT swap the LC2 power plant with Pontiac, Olds, and Chevy G-bodies. The 3.8 turbo was specific to the Buick nameplate.
My dad had one. He was talking to my grandfather at breakfast. Mad that he had gotten a ticket towing his bass boat for failure to signal lane change “I should go get that grand national and find that SOB(state trooper) and back it up in front of his patrol car then spit rocks all over the front of it when I pull off. I’ll ask him when I finally pull over if he saw all my lane change signals that time?”
When my brother died, I inherited an 87’ Grand National. I had no clue that the front ends of these cars literally lift off the ground at the stop light…imagine my surprise. 😂
That "I brake for Corvettes" bumper sticker is awesome.
And that's probably why gm put buick in solitary confinement pretty much 😂

one of the best production cars ever put together in released out for the public I'm thankful and appreciative of the mechanics and the builders they really made a modern Marvel of a vehicle when they develop that Grand National Buick Regal thank you when everything goes electric bro we're going to miss this stuff so much because it's nothing like having a gas-powered vehicle bro with a turbo
One of my favorite cars of all time.
I still remember the day my Uncle traded his ‘70 Cuda for one of these brand new. Everyone told him he was nuts but he didn’t care. He still has it in his garage to this day. With 1,700 miles…
My dad has one and honestly it’s my dream car. Whole family is into cars, and have big car collections. I’d love to just have one special car to me.
Literally been my favorite since I was a kid
There's a few timeless cars that stand above all and should always be produced to some extent. Shelby Cobra, 63 Corvette, Jag E Type... and this Buick is right there in that class. Pure unmatched icon.
My FAVORITE CAR! When this car came out , it had more bodies than JOHN WICK 😂
Mike Doble was GM GURU that orchestrated build of GNX WITH
McLaren and ASC. International Design Group led by Mark Trostle Senior. Believe 557 GNX were produced
.
547 for the GNX (officially) 😉
Over 20,000 1987 GNs were built, plus an undetermined amount of Turbo-Ts.
What I liked about them so much was that Buick did NOT swap the LC2 power plant with Pontiac, Olds, and Chevy G-bodies. The 3.8 turbo was specific to the Buick nameplate.
My dad had one. He was talking to my grandfather at breakfast. Mad that he had gotten a ticket towing his bass boat for failure to signal lane change
“I should go get that grand national and find that SOB(state trooper) and back it up in front of his patrol car then spit rocks all over the front of it when I pull off. I’ll ask him when I finally pull over if he saw all my lane change signals that time?”
My brother has one of these, all stock and low mileage. The GN is a badass!
That car is badass one of my favorites so awesome
This car is not forgotten!
The bumper sticker to throw mad shade at a whole other company is just wild😂😂😂
Actually was the same company, just a different division.
Gotta respect a machine that can smoke a vette
When my brother died, I inherited an 87’ Grand National. I had no clue that the front ends of these cars literally lift off the ground at the stop light…imagine my surprise. 😂
Don Baker baked up something way too good to be true
That car is my dream car. It's exactly what I think of when I think of a car
