Beautifully explained! You helped me override a lot of confusions created by, the so called, manual shift drivers. Once i started driving manual shift, I never wanted another automatic. It is a pure joy of being fully involved with driving your car. Thank you!
Seriously though - Don't powershift into OD! Your over-driving the driveshaft faster than the engine. This consumes gobs of torque to accomplish that and under full power will really shock the gear train. Ease into the upshift to OD then get back on it.
this is the best shifting explanation i've ever seen here on yt. i call it "brake by downshifting" because i like to downshift instead of using my brakes. i'm impressed this video only has 2700 views, everybody must watch this!
Excellent tutorial.. As a side note a third camera showing where the gearshift was would be useful for the double clutch technique as many people may overlook that fact that you're doing two maneuvers during that operation (From gear to neutral, then to the lower gear)
I watched this video 3 years ago when I got my driving licence. Didn't understand much due to my low experience/knowledge about the way a manual transmission worked. 3 years later (now), everything makes so much sense! 👍🏻
6:52 I love the fact that he pauses for a moment to remind you of “heel-toe” it’s just like my nerdy science teacher pausing and waiting for the students to remember the theme which he mentioned in the previous class lol.
Heel-toe shifting only finally made sense to me when I took my car to the Tail of the Dragon with friends who were faster/better/braver drivers than I. There were many times when I had to brake before a very tight corner AND downshift to exit the corner at the proper speed/RPMs. I felt myself hesitating as balanced the brake vs shift decision. Sometimes I needed to do both at once (but that wasn't possible) Then it dawned on me: if I knew how to heel/toe, I would be doing them both at the same time.
Easier said than done haha. You can't get that foot to pivot so nicely with the walls in the way. Most of the time end up hitting all 3 pedals at once.
Lanky Ninja size 47( europe) here. If I do a heel toe I turn it around. I brake with my heel and tap the gas with my toe. This is very clumsy in the beginning tho. What I win is that my feet don't get tangled up and I can keep the throttle pushed in after the corner.
Lanky Ninja same bro, I wear size 15 extra wide and it's hard af to try to drive with a smaller footwell. But like anything, you adapt. Skis for feet sometimes get annoying
When you wear a size 18 it is easy as hell to heel toe. My foot is so big that I learned to heel toe in my first month of driving stick without anyone's help. The problem is that I'm 6'8 so I don't fit in a lot of cars.
Good video, well explained.Seeing all bad comments, looks like a lot of people have tried but are not able to succeed in this easy and natural technique... envy is bad...a manual has to be driven like this. No more discussion . If not , automatic gearboxes wouldn’t have rev matching in cars and bikes.
Heel and toe is a racing technique to keep a car stable while braking and downshifting when driving as fast as possible (on a track for example). In RWD cars, if a lower gear is put in very quickly without a rev match or heel and toe, then the rear wheels will lock temporary, causing clutch/gearbox/drive shaft wear and bringing the car out of balance. It's like when you would pull the handbrake while entering a corner, resulting in snap oversteering. In FWD/AWD cars it's less dangerous in terms of car stability but it produces an excessive amount of clutch, gearbox, drive shaft and engine wear. A race car driver wants to be in the right gear with slightly applied throttle before corner apex or even earlier, so he has to find a way to finish everything he needs to (slowing down, putting the gear in he needs, coupling the engine with the wheels) as fast AND as smooth as possible. Heel and toe is the solution! Rev matching is a good technique to reduce clutch/gearbox wear (if done correctly) while driving in normal traffic every day :) Greets from Germany
V8Roehrldrifter I just got a 5.0Mustang gt for my first manual and sometimes I'd down shift and the wheels would lock a split second this explains alot what you said
@@jebasun02 Exactly, now imagine this happens when you are on the limit and about to enter a corner at 100+mph, not funny. The reason for the wheel lock: The rear wheels are connected to the engine (and the tarmac) while in gear with released clutch pedal. You drive 50mph in 4th gear for example, the rear wheels are turning suitable to this speed and the engine runs at 2500rpm. Now you press the clutch pedal. The car is still moving 50mph, the rear wheels too (they are not connected to the engine now but still to the tarmac) but the engine is still at 2500rpm (even lower because the rpm drops when pressing the clutch pedal). You put 3rd gear in and release the clutch pedal quickly. There is a problem now, 2500rpm in 3rd gear isn't enough to spin the tires the suitable speed for 50mph, it needs way more engine rpm in 3rd gear to drive 50mph. The rear wheels are spinning too fast for the engine, the engine is spinning too slow for the rear wheels. But you connected those together by releasing the clutch pedal. Now the rear wheels tries to accelerate (because spinned by the tarmac) the engine to the right rpm for 50mph in 3rd gear but can't do it fast enough because of mass inertia of the engine. At the same time the engine slows down the rear wheels because its not spinning fast enough for those. The connection can't be hold anymore because of the different speeds, so it breaks at the weakest point. Fortunately the weakest point is the connection of the rear wheels to the tarmac, the wheels turns too slow for the tarmac which moves with 50mph under those wheels, thats why they loose grip and lock (they don't really stop turning but turns way slower than needed). This weakest point of connection in FWD and specially in AWD cars is often a different one. The clutch, drive shafts or even worse. You bypass this problem by rev matching or heel & toe. Sry for the text wall, i tried to explain it as good as i can in english.
Good way to eat the life out of your clutch if you don't know what your doing. Here's the basics learn to crawl before you walk. Walk and walk well before you run. Run and run fast before you race. Racing is fun, a lot of adrenaline, but dangerous to you and those around you. Make wise choices. Live a long and happy life.
And they teach me that heel toe only is used on big corners with high speed. Hairpin we dont use heel too so we have extra brake force and can brake later before the corner. And is rev matching not only really needed on turbo engine cars? To keep turbo spooled
Since posting above, I have discovered a reason, however it is a bit of a stupid reason. Basically, all modern consumer cars (read cars made after dinosaurs went extinct) with manual transmissions have some things called "synchronizers" inside. Literally, the job of the synchronizer is to make it so that you do not have to double clutch as explained in this video. However, as with anything, through use comes wear. Thus, double clutching is effectively like saying "I don't use my blinkers because I don't want my blinker bulbs to go out".
Double-clutching is used more often on work trucks and specialty transmissions. It's also helpful for when the synchros in a transmission are messed up. It also helps reduce wear by making your shifts smoother. It's also fun to do, which is as good of a reason as any. Maybe you should do some research before you say dumb things on the internet.
1) A professional driver of a work truck will not only never double clutch, but he will also not use the clutch at all, unless he his stopped/stopping. Of course, you would not know that because you're talking out of your ass. 2) In no way does double clutching make your shifts smoother, obviously you could improve at downshifting if that is your impression. 3) Certain people find a lot of stupid things to be fun, I find efficiency (removal of useless actions) to be fun 4) Nothing I said above was incorrect 5) Maybe you should do research before you say dumb things on the internet
Honestly, this guy explained it very well! I recently purchased a Subaru BRZ and am a beginner at manual driving. I understood his explanation of what rev matching and double clutching are. I just figured out that I am somewhat already doing rev matching!
The "select 3rd" part is easier when you do a full double clutch downshift. This is why double clutching is ever done to begin with; to help with the gearbox. Depending on your vehicle this is or is not important. 6th to 5th, doesn't matter. 6th to 3rd on the other hand is sometimes pretty harsh and/or takes a lifetime. That's all there is to it. No flat earth theories.
but why is it easier tho? if i clutch in neutral, it's the same as if I just kept the clutch pressed, isnt it? so why do i need to double clutch? i could just press the clutch down and keep it pressed, rev, put it in 3rd and release? that's my confusion, i don't see the need to release it in between...
@@eNC0REx3 maybe he meant that it's easier for the car, when you double clutch your transmission has the same rpm as your engine because it's connected while reving up, so you save the transmission which doesn't have to rev up using the synchro rings
It depends what you wanna do. If I want to reduce my speed I brake a little and shift down ( first gear more braking is necessarily since engine braking is strong) and release the clutch slowly and brake even more. If you want to accelerate like overtaking faster, I shift down but push the gas and slowly let go of the clutch, exactly like how you normally take off at first gear. It works fine but I don't know if that causes any unnecessary wear.
just started driving manual back in the past 1 year and due to Covid, i think i barely clocked even 1500 miles... after spending almost 8 mins watching your video, I still feel like before watching your video, i was like...wtf did i just watch! :) thanks for the video, imma definitely gonna watch a few times again...
Actually I find this vid so good, he does explain pretty good these techniques, maybe not everyone are gonna use it, but it does work. I do use double clutch on my gearbox, firstly cause it's an old truck engine, so if you don't want to switch gears and hear a noise, you double clutch, and afterwards, when we wanna down-shift, mostly on Diesel engines, we gotta have the right rpm in order to make a good compression, if you don't have the rpm, you won't be able to down-shift, you'll stay on neutral, and that's risky if you're going down the road. Greetings
I’m 16 I’ve been driving since I was 13 with my grandpa and I never realized that all that long I was rev matching my grandpa always told me to shift like that
Nicely done. I used to do this on my 1968 Etype where the brake was real close to the accelerator mainly for heel and toe while racing. I would sometime get in trouble after I downshifted and then tried a spirited acceleration out of the turn. The car would swing out of control from oversteer and the "open" differential and was a bear to get back on the road safely. It was a racing monster and I miss it.
Me: Can you take me to the store, Bro? Friend: Cool! Hop in! (UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, START) Alright, we're here! Me: WTF?!
@@rodriguezdelbydr double clutching is for up/down shifting an unsynchronized gearbox, and downshifting when skipping gears. If you don't double clutch when skipping gears you put a lot of stress on the synchros.
I started driving stick when I was 17. There was a serious learning curve to downshifting, but once you get it down it is a game changer. It also helps a lot with your awareness.
Please can someone explain this.. I learned Stick shift from the beginning but I dont get why i would try those techniques instead of just letting out the clutch slowly while shifting down? So the engine breaks and after a while or when I break manually I can shift down again and again until I stop (when I reach a traffic Light for example). I dont get it tbh :D

m8 because the idiot in the video thinks hes joining the fast and furious crew LOL!!!! you can obviuosly drive a manual without having to do all this stupidity
The boy thinks that public roads are a race track.... the stuff you have learned in driving school are enough. If you are a "car guy/girl/something" you are searching for a ways to "drive better", make it more fun and hone your skills. (Its the same in other areas, not just a cars. ie.: football fans will hone the skill of kicking the ball repeatedly without touching a ground... for me? pointless, for them it seemed like fun^^) 1) Rev matching its actually a thing. Its not just downshifting, its about getting the same speed of clutch and engine before you connect them together. Letting your clutch off slowly makes it rub against the flywheel on the engine, that creates friction and slowly matches the speeds and that wears down your clutch. Engine breaking is also a thing and it saves fuel and your breaks... Gearbox works both ways, if its easy to turn from one side, it will be super hard from the other side and vise versa. So if you downshift into high revs to engine break, it will break faster than the higher gear. Thats where rev matching comes in handy. If you need to accelerate (hill or overetaking or something like that) you get more power in lower gear. 2) Double clutch - it saves a synchro rings in your transmission, but fuck them, its their job, its why they are here, not using them is stupid 3) Heel-toe shit - he is just showing off, the point of that is not to engine break, but to be always in gear. You are breaking with breaks and rev matching your downshift at the same time so you can quickly slow down to a turn and blast off right after the turn -> racing. You might impress car guy wannabe friends with that skill but thats about it. tl;dr - fuck dobule clutch and heel-toe - learn to rev match or sell your car early - lower gear = more effective engine break
Awesome 👍 us truck and tractor trailer drivers use double clutch method, or clutchless using RPM and use fuel to blip to in and out gears which is very useful going uphill, or down, but also to cut fatigue driving for 14hrs a day, but also save clutch life.
Legit question - how is it different revving the engine when it's in neutral versus revving when the clutch is in? Don't both effectively disengage the engine from the drive train?
@@thehero2598 it is useless, you can revmatch with the clutch in and achieve the same thing, his way just takes longer. It isn't even double clutching. Double clutching is for ooolder cars that have transmissions without synchros, you would have to double clutch to shift up or down. The Fast and the furious movies put out some misinformation in their first movie and it is a running joke among people who actually know cars and where the term comes from and where it is used. Modern cars, double clutching is useless, unless you have a gear or two with no synchonizers left lol. You ever have a gear that grinds or is crunchy engaging? double clutch, it will go in better. Further further more, all double clutching is, is clutch in neutral clutch in next gear up, no reving involved. This guys is just misinformed is all.

Excellent tutorial.. As a side note a third camera showing where the gearshift was would be useful for the double clutch technique as many people may overlook that fact that you're doing two maneuvers during that operation (From gear to neutral, then to the lower gear)

auRORa BOReAlis.
Sometimes I needed to do both at once (but that wasn't possible) Then it dawned on me: if I knew how to heel/toe, I would be doing them both at the same time.
i have to be honest, ive never realy needed heel-toe, rev matching and just braking in between gears is also fine, ofcourse im not racing anyone tho
Heel-toeing is really a racing technique and not at all necessary for the street.
I just took my 02 Honda Civic and learned how to rev match around the neighborhood. Never knew you could do this in a manual.
3:45 is what I came for 👍 ill probably watch it 10 more times over the next week as I get better, much appreciated you're an awesome instructor
It’s a learning curve with a size 15 shoe lmao
Easier said than done haha. You can't get that foot to pivot so nicely with the walls in the way. Most of the time end up hitting all 3 pedals at once.
Lanky Ninja size 47( europe) here. If I do a heel toe I turn it around. I brake with my heel and tap the gas with my toe. This is very clumsy in the beginning tho. What I win is that my feet don't get tangled up and I can keep the throttle pushed in after the corner.
Yeah, I have size 13 and I have to use the left side of my foot on the break and the right side on the gas. It works lol
Listing to that double clutch is the most satisfying thing ever
Good video, well explained.Seeing all bad comments, looks like a lot of people have tried but are not able to succeed in this easy and natural technique... envy is bad...a manual has to be driven like this. No more discussion . If not , automatic gearboxes wouldn’t have rev matching in cars and bikes.
Straight to the point. No 10 minute bullshit in the beginning. You didn't over complicate anything. Much appreciated! 👌👌
Rev matching is a good technique to reduce clutch/gearbox wear (if done correctly) while driving in normal traffic every day :)
Greets from Germany
V8Roehrldrifter I just got a 5.0Mustang gt for my first manual and sometimes I'd down shift and the wheels would lock a split second this explains alot what you said
@@jebasun02 Exactly, now imagine this happens when you are on the limit and about to enter a corner at 100+mph, not funny.
The reason for the wheel lock:
The rear wheels are connected to the engine (and the tarmac) while in gear with released clutch pedal.
Thank you.. man I can see Soo many people trying to do this shit and wrecking
Great vid. Thank you. I drove a big rig for 7 years, so about 500,000 miles, and double-clutching got me a very strong left leg!

Double clutching is totally unnecesary unless you're driving an old unsyncronised gearbox. Period!

@@DavyDave1313 don't think so... I'm driving a 20 yo BMW and it's synced
@@ilutrazvan7793 same with my 35 yo Camaro. Double clutching is basically useless now a days
Agreed
If you e-brake a 180 turn into reverse gear it can be useful.
Why double clutch? Why not just hold the clutch in, rev, and put it in the gear you want (skipping neutral)?
3) Certain people find a lot of stupid things to be fun, I find efficiency (removal of useless actions) to be fun
4) Nothing I said above was incorrect
5) Maybe you should do research before you say dumb things on the internet
PS, you're not worth another reply from me, feel free to piss out any more bullshit you have
Or sound like theyre really "cool and informed" by over complicating the mundane...
Honestly, this guy explained it very well! I recently purchased a Subaru BRZ and am a beginner at manual driving. I understood his explanation of what rev matching and double clutching are. I just figured out that I am somewhat already doing rev matching!
why double cluth from 6th to 3rd? why not just press the clutch, rev higher than usual rev matching and then select 3rd?
Let me know when you find an answer, doubt you will. Seems like an "earth is flat" theory to me.
with rev match you only safe the clutch, doucle clutching is also saves the synchro rings in your car

One of the most informative videos I've seen on the different types of shifting. Very well described
Greetings

Nicely done. I used to do this on my 1968 Etype where the brake was real close to the accelerator mainly for heel and toe while racing. I would sometime get in trouble after I downshifted and then tried a spirited acceleration out of the turn. The car would swing out of control from oversteer and the "open" differential and was a bear to get back on the road safely. It was a racing monster and I miss it.

If ur coming to a stop always put it in neutral, all these things u do like downshifting into first or slowly releasing ur clutch just ruins ur clutch
@ why would you ever let a 10 year old drive a car?
The boy thinks that public roads are a race track.... the stuff you have learned in driving school are enough.
If you are a "car guy/girl/something" you are searching for a ways to "drive better", make it more fun and hone your skills. (Its the same in other areas, not just a cars. ie.: football fans will hone the skill of kicking the ball repeatedly without touching a ground... for me? pointless, for them it seemed like fun^^)
1) Rev matching its actually a thing.
2) Double clutch - it saves a synchro rings in your transmission, but fuck them, its their job, its why they are here, not using them is stupid
3) Heel-toe shit - he is just showing off, the point of that is not to engine break, but to be always in gear. You are breaking with breaks and rev matching your downshift at the same time so you can quickly slow down to a turn and blast off right after the turn -> racing. You might impress car guy wannabe friends with that skill but thats about it.
tl;dr
- fuck dobule clutch and heel-toe
- learn to rev match or sell your car early
- lower gear = more effective engine break
One reason is to put less wear and tear on your synchromeshes to keep the shifting action of your transmission smooth and effortless as it should be
Awesome 👍 us truck and tractor trailer drivers use double clutch method, or clutchless using RPM and use fuel to blip to in and out gears which is very useful going uphill, or down, but also to cut fatigue driving for 14hrs a day, but also save clutch life.
Legit question - how is it different revving the engine when it's in neutral versus revving when the clutch is in? Don't both effectively disengage the engine from the drive train?
2:58 he said why
He turns the downshift to an upshift so he can dump the clutch faster and hit the gas faster
