      I think that might have been missing the point of that doomstack though. My thought on first seeing it was that the purpose of the Syreens was to hold the enemy in place so that you were free to slaughter them with magic. That is reinforced by the presence of so many wizards in the army, getting the winds of magic up so you can use lots of spells.

    Seems like the point of having so many heroes is to kill magic users to protect the syreens? Like, I get the point of not RELYING on magic to win the battle, but if they sent a stack in with that many heroes and wizards, it probably is to compliment the doomstack....so use them. If you were using the heros up front and engaging their wizards, a lot of their magic attention would have shifted to the heroes, saving the syreens. Notice how those 2 wizards were getting a good amount of fireballs just at them?

    • @Mahfireballs
      @Mahfireballs 3 года назад +5

      True but if he would use the heroes to their full extent he would just wind of death 80% of the army, and the casters don't counter the other wizards but the enemy infantry. But indeed they do draw attention of magic and the others (the Ethereal Knight and the Mourngul Haunter) can and probably should be used to hunt down the enemy wizards and kill them. So yeah you should use them and if you use them you will save the Syreens of quite some magic attacks.
      But I agree with Legend that it is better to remove 2 of the wizards and put some other units in. (You can get some other heroes but they are hard to get as the Vampire Coast of just 2 more Syreens, or maybe even something else as Necrofex Collosus as they can shoot the wizards when they approach. They might be a bit awkward once battle commences, but with so much melee infantry you will try to engage just as much other units as you can. (Maybe in a line to use Wind of Death or....) So I guess the Necrofex Collossus would be quite save.

      I agree for an early doomstack, but for general use, I couldn't give it above a 5. The army imposes being terrified of magical damage of any kind, and doesn't really have a way around it if it comes up.
      If you roll up on, I dunno, a Slann and a unit of Sacred Kroxigors, there's just nothing the stack can do, and a stack that has to be THAT careful about matchups can't be higher than a 5. The entire point of a doomstack is to turn off your brain and push the move button.
      Secondarily, and more out of curiosity, is this army screwed by autoresolve? I could see autoresolve doing something silly and having this army take huge losses from dreadspear spam.

    This video actually inspired me to do a full Vortex campaign (on VH difficulty) with a similar Syreen Stack - just to try out if it works. So I'll go in depth with what I learned, but the short of it is: it's quite fun, viable and even works into the late campaign. That said, I tweaked the army a little bit.
    So, here's the long version of what I used and what I learned:
    For most of the campaign, I used Cylostra on her crabby crab, 2 Vampire Fleet Captains (Lore of Vampires) on their small crabs, 2 units of Handgunners (later replaced by 2 units of Deck Gunners), a Mournghoul Haunter, the ghostly Paladin, and 13 Syreens.
    The Vampires are decent fighters on their crabs and they are important as healers to prolong the grindy fight that you want. Cylostra on her mount can also endure some punishment, but more importantly, she's got her aoe debuff and the summons to clear out backlines. Syreens I think need no explanation.
    As for the Handgunners, the Paladin and the Mournghoul...they are meant to be a goon squad against this army's weaknesses: heroes, lords and monsters with magic attacks (i.e. phoenixes and dragons). The gunners performed pretty great in that role, sniping out any flyers and/or big targets - especially once I upgraded to deck gunners/their RoR variant. The Haunter and Paladin kind of sucked, tbh, because they lose most fights against the really problematic foes like Tyrion. I think at least one of these four units could be replaced by a Gunnery Wight - frankly, I'd rather go for two Gunnery wights instead of the Haunter and Paladin.
    For the actual campaign, I set my goal as conquering Ulthuan. To do this, I first migrated south, taking the Skeggi settlements, then moved to occupy Galleon's Graveyard. This is a great base of operations, since it's pretty much unassailable and no one outside of scripted armies will want to attack you. For good measure, I took Sartosa as well. At that point (around maybe turn 20) I could build the full doomstack. I razed Caledor and when Tyrion moved to resettle it, I jumped his weakened army, then immediately dove for Lothern. Using Lothern as a base of operations, I spent the rest of the campaign aggressively expanding across the inner donut of Ulthuan, eventually using a second and third army to secure the south and going for a two-pronged attack.
    The Shanty battles are a joke since they can be dealt with by the garrison at Galleon's Graveyard.
    Cylostra's army is, at least in practice, pretty invincible. With the VC tech tree ,and blue line skills from the lord and heroes, the army can replenish to nearly full health within a turn even after a pyrrhic victory. Even if you lose a syreen unit or two, they are quickly replaced. In battle, it really comes down to good threat management. Regular non-magical units are a total no-brainer - you just waltz over them with Syreens and there's nothing the enemy can do about that. The only real problems in my campaign were Tyrion, Alarielle, and a weird army with like 5 Loremasters of Hoeth + Eltharion. If left alone, these characters can easily win entire battles. Snipe them with everything you got. It will still be costly. The occasional Phoenix or Dragon was no biggie since they are so easy to snipe.
    The big horror scenario for this doomstack would be a really lategame High Elf doomstack with many phoenixes and Tyrion wearing the sword of khaine. ...But you can kind of prevent that from ever becoming a reality if you push the HE territory aggressively. By keeping the AI on the backfoot and killing any and every army, you weaken them enough for other factions (primarily DE, in my case also TKs) to start invading Ulthuan and from there on out it's just a matter of time. The High Elfs were completely gone from Ulthuan around turn 110 in my game, so some time before their dreaded doomstacks start popping up. Around a quarter of the island had been invaded by the DEs, whom I could have fought next, another couple of settlements were in Settra's hands.
    So...conclusion? This is by no means an invincible army - even with my tweaks to work around its inherent weakness to magic wielders. That said, even against a less than ideal opponent like the High Elfs, it can easily work if you play your cards right.
    I can think of a few scenarios where this would be a really bad army, but they are all either avoidable or unrealistic. A lategame Wurrzzag army where every unit has magic attack would screw you over big time, a Phoenix/Dragon/Loremaster spam could do it. High level Wood Elf armies are also bad news. But let's be real - the only one out of these that Cylostra realistically could run into is the High Elfs and as I explained, you can just prevent that from happening.

    This was my favorite warhammer 2 stack. Sailing around the map with Cylostra and kicking ass. Cylostra can also summon the ethereal knights, and Vangheist's Revenge is almost as strong as Wind of death. But yes, you had to know which factions to avoid: with lots of magic. And that's when I ran into Wurrzag and my army got obliterated. Wait what, why is this happening...ooooooh, his entire army gets magical attacks because of a skill :D

    Syreens are my favorite front line unit for VC. They last a good while, easy to heal up, and they are very fast. Perfect for holding and even running down enemy units.

  • @norfemignissius4936
    @norfemignissius4936 3 года назад +2

    I would not go full Syreen, since them seems to lack a bit of "OOMPF" on the damage side. But nothing Direfin can't deal with once she has her wind spell.
    They do lack in the speed category but it's inherent to vampire coast (unless you send the dogs).
    Send against dwarves or add some "Mage killer" to the stack and it's great. Or a hero that wound/assassinate mages on campaign.

    On one doomstack of Necrofex Colossi, you can afford between two to three full armies be they Syreens or regular Vampire Coast troops taking into account Cylostra's upkeep reduction on Syreens. The user who sent you this Rate my Doomstack battle did not field additional armies. Those Death and Deep Vampire Fleet Captains are unnecessary unless you want extra WoM, leadership and melee attack as those Lore of Vampire casters and Cylostra's magic are enough to support the Ethereal units. My score is eight-and-half/ten.

  • @SoullessCast
    @SoullessCast 3 года назад +1

    I feel like one of the points of this stack was to use the magic. One of the greatest strengths of nearly unkillable melee infantry is just pinning the enemy in massive blobs, like this fight had, then blowing them up with magic.

    • @OctagonCookies

      Exactly, just have to be real careful. In this army if you accidentally wiff your aim and slightly hit your own unit you might kill it entirely.

      Exp are hard to get for players, to get to that point either you have buffs that get extra levels at the start or essentially get a sack-city.. and even then it takes LOADS. Considering this is a 61 turn full army, it's only natural that they are not fully developed.
      Also, not all the stuff from the skill-tree is really that useful.

    This is interesting as a concept, doomstacks are great but often pretty late game. Obviously ideally a doomstack that can handle literally anything is the best, but it's an interesting concept to rate midgame and earlygame "specific" doomstacks, i.e. armies that are functionally unbeatable for a specific purpose.

      VC get a couple of those. A Handgunner mob + mortars stack plays a similar role against cavalry weak armies, and will melt anything.

      Vangheist does the same for almost half the cost, with only slightly narrower hit area. I even like it more because the projectiles move very fast and don't tend to wander off the course. It's a superior spell many people overlook because you need to aim specifically with a sizable bias in the direction opposite to fire, as it always shoots at a further away spot than the cursor placement.
