Songs - Oh My Darlin' Clementine

- 1. In a cavern in a canyon, Excavating for a mine, Lived a miner forty-niner, And his daughter Clementine. (CHORUS) Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine.
2. Light she was and like a fairy, And her shoes were number nine: Herring boxes without topses, Sandals were for Clementine. Repeat Chorus: Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine.
3. Drove she ducklings to the water, Every morning at nine. Stubbed her toe against a splinter; Fell into the foaming brine. Repeat Chorus: Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine.
4. Ruby lips above the water Blowin' bubbles soft and fine. But, alas, I was no swimmer, SO U lost my Clementine. Repeat Chorus: Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine.
5. How I missed her, how I missed her, How I missed my Clementine, Until I kissed her little sister, And forgot my Clementine! Repeat Chorus: Oh, my darlin', Oh my darlin', Oh my darlin' Clementine. You are lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorry Clementine.

The fact that this is about his daughter dying and it's a "kids song"
"ring around the rosie" is about the black plague
But why did he kiss her sister and forget about clementine. I've gotten second hand trauma
@@anubhutigupta9624 And this video is the dad singing the song but I've always felt it was like her fiancé. And at the end when he kisses her little sister and forgot about her it's because he decided to have a new wife now
@@anubhutigupta9624 he had another daughter, once he kissed the head of his 2nd baby he could move on from losing clementine.
It was one of my favorite songs, so yeah children can handle it.

IKR? I always imagined when they got married (yes i chose to romance Louis over Violet as I didnt like her character at all) this was the song he sang at their wedding.
The miner was a forty-niner, which means he was a part of the 1849 Gold Rush to California. Over 300,000 people moved to California after the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill was widely publicized. Inevitably, most of these people were not proper miners, and many were not even well equipped to make the journey west to start an expensive venture.
In the song the miner has a daughter named Clementine. He can’t afford to buy her shoes, so she is wearing small wooden boxes on her feet, referred to as “herring boxes without topses. “ The boxes are also referred to as her sandals.
Because she is wearing rough wooden boxes on her feet, she gets a splinter which causes her to stumble and fall into the water as she was driving the ducklings into the water. She drowned because her father, the miner, could not swim and therefore could not save her. “Dreadful sorry, Clementine,” he sings.
Aaand he kissed her little sister and forgot her 😂
I did *not* know these lyrics.
@@kukaliemikalie8157 I think that part is supposed to explain why he didn't at least TRY to save her. Most fathers would jump in, knowing they would drown, just to attempt a rescue. Just at a chance to save their daughter.
Except this father has a SECOND daughter for which he is responsible and therefore couldn't die trying to save one daughter and possibly leaving the second daughter and orphan.
Afterwards, he returns home and kisses the little sister, taking comfort in knowing that he made the best decision for at least one of his children, and trying to make his peace with the loss of his other daughter. Life was much, much harder in the 1800's than it is today. Losing children was not uncommon. You needed to accept the tragedy of it, move on with life, and be grateful for what you have.
POV: You didn’t know this song is in the perspective of her lover
I don't understand it, because it is supposed to be from the perspective of Clementine's lover, this means that the lover could not save her, not the father, that is, the "dreadful sorry" part refers to the lover and not the father
❤thanks all you for explaining the story behind this amazing classic song

@@byak6687 Translating roughly, it tells about a fisherman and his daughter living together, until the last part where they say "you have left your old father alone and gone far away". The last verse is up for interpretation tbh
Me. I just sang to my little son in Korean version and he felt asleep. I was the same i heard the korean verion in my childhood and now i sing for my little one.
There was a Korean version? Welp, I am just a tad less uneducated. Also, Cindy, I'm 60 and I'm just now getting the reference of how big Clementine's feet were, and the kind of humor some men have when they don't have much to entertain themselves with. But I still don't know where 'drove the ducklings' came from. I remember 'drove the horses'. I hope you cheered up by now.

Back in the 70s, I wanted to join a vocal quintet in my high school. In order to get in, I (along with a whole bunch of other kids) had to do a couple of minutes A cappella (my choice). All the other kids did something either upbeat and/or contemporary or Amazing Grace. When I started singing this there were lots of jaw drops and snickers, but I got Mrs. Simonson's attention and made the group. So I have a soft spot for this song.

I find it both hilarious and saddening how everyone is misinterpreting this song, though it's understandable because only about half the verses are included in this rendition. It's a man mourning the loss of his girlfriend and then moving on to her sister(which was common in that day and area, as people were few and far between), not an incestuous father mourning his daughter and then getting with his other daughter. This song is meant to be darkly humorous.

First time I heard this was Louis singing it to Clementine. Such a great introduction.
Over my years I would go through spurts of parts of this song singing in my head from when I was a little kid. Dont remember where or rly when I first heard it, but after all these years typing the part I knew into google and found it! It makes me feel weird now knowing what its all about, but even as a kid I remember it making me sad. It still does.
Y'know, I see a lot of people misinterpreting this song in the comments, the meaning should be obvious, is about a father, the miner, who lost his daughter Clementine because he couldn't swim to save her and missed her deeply, but he had other daughter and was able to move on with his life.
Sweet home Alabama
Misinterpreting? The lyrics are quite clear that the narrator is not the father. It's someone who was in love with a miner's daughter, but couldn't save her when she drowned. Then (in the last verse) he kissed her younger sister and fell in love with her, so everything ended up fine. Like many folk songs, it's morphed and become genericized.

Charlotte Rhodes “Oh My Darling, Clementine” is a traditional American folk song, commonly credited to Percy Montrose (1884).
The lyrics have changed over time, and what started as a sincere lament became a parody. Clementine is the daughter of a 49er, a miner in the 1849 California Gold Rush. But she drowned. As the song progresses, the changes become evident, with the tone turning tongue-in-cheek. The second verse, for example, mentions the size of Clementine’s feet: so big she wears boxes instead of shoes.”

Guys just to let you know its her boyfriend singing the song not her father because the song starts off with "In a cavern, in a canyon Excavating for a mine Dwelt a miner, forty-niner And his daughter, Clementine" if it was the father singing why didn't he say "my daughter" also why would the father be singing in third person? Also what father would kiss one of his daughter and forget about the other who just died
As a kid I would sing the first verse "oh my darling clemintine" then would rhyme words using the melody like "oh her breath smelled like lime" but this..... why are some childhood songs so dark. Now I wish I never wanted to know the full song.

The guy is a miner, his daughter drowns, but his pain is eased when he kisses her sister (his daughter), meaning he had another child whom to love.

I known this song from a short JP comic, which about the time during Vietnam War, an American deserter was rescued by a local lass, they fell in love each other, but sadly the lass was send to the war before she left she ask the man to look after her home until she return, then 7 years later war were end only a little girl came back, and the last view is that man turns older and singing this song, 'clementine' is lost and gone forever, the lass dead in the war and that little girl is their child😢
Awesome song
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind brings me here!
When I was young my dad used to sing this for me to make me go to sleep and I swear it scarred me for life.
Quick summary: father that can’t swim stares as his drowning daughter dies and then kisses younger daughter
I thought it was her boyfriend and after Clementine died he took her younger sister as a lover.
Sweet home Alabama
This is a tragic Love story 😢 poor Clementine she drowned in water and what's worst is it's near the minings Drowning there is Terrible 😔 search why I don't like to add it on my comment and her lover Fell in love with her younger sister Rest in peace Clementine
Wtf it literally says in the song,
" lived a miner, 49er, and his DAUGHTER, Clementine"
Also this isn't in Alabama since the dad is a 49er, so it's in California.
the one who sung this song is Clementine lover not the Father, Her Father was 3rd person here. *hint : His Daughter not my daughter and *my darling Clementine not His darling Clementine.
I listened to this song and then watched anohana a few days later and when I watched it. I kept thinking of this song. And another thing I know how people are focused of the irresponsible father who failed to save his daughter and then forgets about her after kissing his younger daughter. The person singing this has a very beautiful voice
Here because of "It's okay to not be okay" 🤷♀
me too..... but it feels that i already knew this song
I sang this song (in my mother tongue) with grandma as a kid. I didn't come here from a stupid video •,___•
stfu
Cool
What's that.
Notice the lyrics on the description.
" But, alas, I was no swimmer, *SO U* lost my Clementine. "
