It’s not the full song. In the full song, the miner kills himself to be with her, how the narrator won’t hug her anymore because that’s going too far, both of their (Clementine and her father’s) bodies fertilize the church flowers, finally ending with the narrator getting with Clementine’s little sister (included that part in the song).

This song was actually really popular around the area I grew up in Kentucky as many of the people had grandfathers and great grandfathers that travelled to West Virginia for work in the mines and so they made sure to pass it on to their kids like their parents did
Nah, the song is about California but it's popular all over the states. I knew it growing up in New York in a town where most people where descended from Ellis Island Immigrants.

What a beautiful and sad song 😍😍😳😳 I lost my grandmother in Febuary 2022 because of Covid and when I heard the song I took a pen and my book I wrote the lyrics of the song but for her. I changed the lyrics and I did the same thing but instead of Clementine I talk about my grandmother and the feeling I had when she passed away 😳😳❤❤

Few people know all the words and the sadness of the story. Being in love with a miner's daughter during the CA gold rush in 1849 (which is why they got nicknamed 49-ers) Apparently didn't have much wealth as she wore boxes as shoes. She trips and falls in the river and drowns. Then some versions include kissing the sister which is even more creepy. I heard it sung at a summer kids camp once and the last verse was made up encouraging young people to learn to swim.
The song is actually a parody of the sad ballads of the time. If you break the lines down you see it, for example you don’t lead ducks to water because you will fall in, and also why would she be bringing the ducks to a foaming brine (rushing water) because they would drown. The last creepy lines are a joke thrown in at the end.

I have not heard this ending about a little sister. In the version I know, it’s from the mothers perspective and after the loss of clementine… her husband followed to be with clementine.

My mom had a cassette of a bunch of old Folk and mountain songs. I used to know a bunch, Ol' man tucker, 15 miles on the Erie canal, Oh Susannah, She'll be coming around the Mountain, Shenandoah. Sure wish I knew where I could get a CD with all them songs.

Who's here from "The Ballad of song birds and snakes" book? It's my first time hearing this song and while waiting the movie release, I know, I'll be haunted for ages with this another orchestra composition if they find a chance taking this in the movie. From what I read in another comment's replies, the song is basically just making fun of ballads
It's about the daughter of a miner who fell into the lake in drowned and it's deliberately made to sound suspicious. The guy singing it, her supposed lover, is acting like he's grief-stricken, but he clearly isn't. This is a parody of the tragic ballads of the time, maybe even a specific one.
