My grandma only has a few days left cause cancer. I am 15 and she's been teaching me to sing since I was 8. She's the reason I even like singing. We asked her if there's anything she wants us to do, and she wants me and my cousins who sing, though they don't sing infront of people, to sing this at the front of her funeral. She knows she's dying and sang this to us. She sings this to all her grandkids and now we are going to sing it for her as she passes to heaven. I don't really like the concept because I'm a little shy and don't like crying and I know it will make me cry, but my feeling about people seeing me shed a tear aren't even recognized by me if my nana wants me to do what she taught me to love. I would've never started singing if it wasn't for her, and I have many mental disabilitys and aspergers syndrome as well and music has helped me more than anything else. I kind of understand where your coming from, and they do play a large role in our life. Thank you Nana and God bless your grandpa

This song was written by a black man who was a freed slave. It was written to commemorate the underground railway AFTER the civil war and adopted by black people as a gospel song and is sung today at funerals and churches etc.all over America. One of the great Louis Armstrong performances and believe it or not Martin Luther King who fought for blacks during the civil riots of the 60’s. No offence but I suggest you learn your history. I too love the song.

@@angelajohnson7796 Yeah my English teacher was telling us today that this song was used as a code to warn other slaves that help would be coming. She said that these songs were called spirituals to trick the slave masters into thinking that they were ‘’buying into Christianity’’. I’m not sure if that’s even true but it sounded like she was trying to bash Christianity which pissed me off

"A Short Life of Mark Twain": He went upstairs now, to the piano, and played and sang "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "My Lord He Calls Me." ... Mrs. Clemens from her room heard the music, and said to Katie Leary : "He is singing a good-night carol to me." The music ceased presently, and ... almost in that instant life slipped away without a sound.

Since I was a kid this has always been my go to tune. I sing it in my head my whole life all the time and I don't even know all of the words, I was goofily making some words up this am and decided I needed to finally know all the words after singing it wrong for 34 years. I hope they play it qt my funeral. That song us attached to my soul I feel.
If I'm sad it comes to mind while I self soothe , and when I'm super happy it comes whailing out of me. And when I'm feeling goofy like this am this song along with a bunch of extra made up lyrics comes out of me !! Something about this song I deeply attached to me.
If someone ever asked " what song does your soul sing" this would be it.

Being is senior to doing which is senior to having. The least of these requires the one for whom having exists, to commit nothing that a being finds challenging. The fulcrum favors nothing, thereby achieving a space wherein all is possible. Balance has no drama but allows for every such form to express without favor. Swing low, sweet chariot...💕

Sydney Price Many songs of that era known as "american negro spirituals" are thought of to have included secret messages (it's not proven if this was so... but we know that Harriet Tubman leader in the underground railroad did do this with one or two songs)[see references below]. At first this particular song is obviously a reference to the historical narrative in the Bible of when the Prophet Elijah was taken up to Heaven by the Lord in a whirlwind and heavenly chariots of fire driven by angelic hosts (as mentioned in 2 Kings chapter 2 and cross referenced in 2 King chapter 6). But people say that the african american slaves may have used this song to secretly sing about the underground railroad as well. The chariot for some folks could have very well of been the "train" or carriage taking them north to freedom. The band of angels in their day may possibly share a duel meaning an indirect reference also to a band of abolitionists who would sneak them away at night. And the last verse, "If you get there before I do, Tell all my friends I'm coming there too," may not only be about getting to Heaven someday, but also to tell their family and friends up north that they hope to soon join them there in freedom. This is speculation but see links below for more info.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_of_the_Underground_Railroad
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steal_Away
"Songs such as "Steal Away to Jesus", "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Wade in the Water" and the "Gospel Train" are songs with hidden codes, not only about having faith in God, but containing hidden messages for slaves to run away on their own, or with the Underground Railroad.[2][3]"
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_of_the_Underground_Railroad
Scholars who have examined these claims tend to believe that while the slave songs may certainly have expressed hope for deliverance from the sorrows of this world, these songs did not present literal help for runaway slaves.[11][12]
There is evidence, however, that Harriet Tubman used at least two songs. Sarah Bradford's authorized biography of Tubman, Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman, published in 1869, quotes Tubman as saying that she used "Go Down Moses" as one of two code songs to communicate with fugitive enslaved people escaping from Maryland.[13]
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_Low,_Sweet_Chariot"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was written by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory in what is now Choctaw County, near the County seat of Hugo, Oklahoma sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to heaven by a chariot (2 Kings 2:11). Some sources[1][2] claim that this song and "Steal Away"[3] (also composed by Willis) had lyrics that referred to the Underground Railroad, the freedom movement that helped blacks escape from Southern Slavery to the North and Canada.Alexander Reid, a minister at the Old Spencer Academy, Choctaw boarding school, heard Willis singing these two songs and transcribed the words and melodies. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe. The song enjoyed a resurgence during the 1960s Civil Rights struggle and the folk revival; it was performed by a number of artists. Perhaps the most famous performance during this period was that by Joan Baez during the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival.Oklahoma State Senator, Judy Eason McIntyre from Tulsa, Oklahoma proposed a bill nominating "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" as the Oklahoma State official gospel song in 2011. The bill was co-sponsored by the Oklahoma State Black Congressional Caucus. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin signed the bill into law on May 5, 2011, at a ceremony at the Oklahoma Cowboy Hall of Fame; making the song the official Oklahoma State Gospel Song.[citation needed]
