Plastic piece goes in the hole first followed by the rod to make it lock in then you twist to attach to the other side of the rod to keep it from sliding out.
Based and 3dprinting pilled. Sometimes you gotta do a lot of sanding and drilling with small clearance pieces. Also you can try designing clips with more contact patch (maybe by hugging the part that broke off) that might help it breaking off.

Damn E36 tabs always break! They should advertise these printers solely on that use case haha.
