    In our farmhouse we simply took steel wool to the pine floors and coated with tung oil. They came out beautiful

      We did that on the pine floors that we exposed in the pantry and at the top of the basement stairs. I just wish the rest of the pine could have been restored too.

    We have Nigerian Dwarf goats, they are very docile and people oriented plus adorable. I have found that they aren’t your typical escape artist goats and are quite content when given enough room. I milk them and love the milk, they have the highest cream content of any goat milk so it’s creamy and sweet, not at all “goaty”. We like that they don’t produce a ton of milk (about a quart a day each) since it’s just my husband and I. With just one in milk there was enough to make butter, cheese and I drink it in my coffee daily plus plenty for baking and buttermilk too. We don’t drink much dairy so our barn cats and dogs get daily servings too. It is really good for them. I was hesitant at first so we just got 2 to try them out but we’re up to 8 now and they are lots of fun and easy keepers!

    Hello to you two! In my humble opinion, a sheep dog and some sheep would be great fun :) I had a australian sheppard and the hair issue is a lot less than a golden. My dog Jack was fascinated by the cows, he could watch them for hours, it was incredibly funny! Anyways, it's always a joy to see what you guys are up too :)

    Thank you for letting us in on your plans. This is going to be an exciting year. There are mixed opinions regarding goats. Chelsea from Little Mountain Ranch sold her goats again and now has sheep. Goats have a reputation for not being easy to care for. Maybe sheep are a better alternative? Dogs are basically mandatory on a farm. We have a female Goldendoodle. She only sheds a little and she has all the great qualities of a Golden Retriever. I believe Ruth Ann Zimmermann also breeds Goldendoodles. Have a good start into the new gardening year. Warm greetings from Germany. Madi

    You should do the meat birds. Goats need serious fencing. We are a year 2 farm and we already did 450 meat birds and 2 pigs. Highly recommend!

      @megb683 4 месяца назад

      @@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764i recommend Joel Salatin’s tractor design. It’s not perfect, but it is moveable. We only put 50 birds per tractor but Joel recommends 75. I think 50 is better. Good luck! Can’t wait to see videos on what you decide. We are working on a dairy cow next!

  • @lisanowakow3688
    @lisanowakow3688 6 месяцев назад

    I hope you have a couple extra hives! You could make them.
    I’d like to get a Frenchie. I love their quirky personalities, you can get fluffy ones or short haired ones. Poodles don’t shed. Greyhounds are retired young and need homes. Or an outdoor guardian dog?
    Look at 1870’s Homestead they also had floor issues.
    I know all the care that goes into dairy goats, I hear meat herds are a little stand Office and I wouldn’t want to keep a male of either breeds.
    Meat chickens would be my desire because they are bound for freezer camp in 8-12 days.
    How about piggies, they are cute? You could use the root cellar to make prosciutto. How about mushrooms

    I have katahdin hair sheep and they are so fun. They are like big dogs that love following us around. We also have a golden retriever and a golden doodle. We definitely have an issue with them always being dirty on the farm but I couldn’t imagine life without them. Doodles hair can be so thick that it’s hard to brush her and keep her clean. Maybe a lab? But they shed a lot too. But I’m real partial to a golden retriever! I probably would get another 😅

    Supposedly golden doodles don’t shed as much. A slightly older dog might be better than getting a brand new puppy if it saves you the potty training and crate training work. AKC has a quiz you can take to find breeds of dogs that might work for your lifestyle.
    Hales Jumbo cantaloupe trellised up cattle panels for me OK. I’m going to try a bunch of different melon varieties this year.

    I say leave the oak floor unless the floor underneath is salveagable which alot of times are totally salveagable. Otherwise don't sand---It has a wonderful story that sanding will take off. We sanded our 1890 floors and the guy put so much shine on them it's a huge regret. So slippery when even a drop of water gets on them. As far as dogs.... golden retrievers or other labs are the best and are meant for family amd farm! Don't get a dog that has to be clipped a certain way and bathed etc etc at a groomers. --homesteaders don't have time for that!! A good old fashioned farm dog that you just brush some is what you need! And young enough to acclimate to your chickens.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  6 месяцев назад

      We can see the pine floors from the basement and they aren't salveagable. The oak floors have a slight shine which we're not thrilled with, but I'm (Brenda) fine with leaving them the way they are. It's not what we would have picked, but it's not that bad. We just started looking at labrodor retrievers. It's such a tough decision, but I do miss having a dog around. I alwyas had one when Don was working because he traveled a lot. Now he's home all of the time, but I would still enjoy the company of a special dog.

    What fruit trees that fruit quicker than seven years I have a 22-year-old pear tree that gives us a real big amount of fruit fruit like 300 pounds we butchered this winter and it is already giving us blooms so it’s it did good I thought I was gonna skip a year because we did such a hard pruning. It was way too tall so we brought it down and it’s it’s already doing great and we just planted a fig tree and a crab apple tree. I’m gonna do a pomegranate. I grew up with pomegranates when I was little so I want to bush now 🌱

    Thanks for sharing your accomplishments from 2023 and a look ahead! Best wishes for good health this year. 😊 Having a German Shepherd, I can relate to the hair shedding and old wood floors conundrum… I decided not to refinish my floors for now and instead just put down some rugs to cover the worst parts. Also invested in a Roomba vacuum to run daily to keep dust and hair at bay. It’s been a real help in between deep cleaning.
    I have fond memories of playing in my great grandpa’s hay loft on his cattle farm. No special “play structure” there - but we used our imaginations and made forts from the bales. It will be fun to see what you all end up doing!
