Shaun: this video and your work here were what roped me into Snarky Puppy. You touched my heart, you touched my life, you will always live on in the people you reached. Thank you. Rest in peace.
RIP Shaun Martin, one of my favorite keyboard players 😭Thing of Gold was the song that drew me to Shaun and his music, I listen to this song at least once a week 😥
RIP Shaun. Saw Snarky back in 2017 and this was the first song they played. It changed my life and im forever grateful to Shaun and the others. This is a sad day.
This is the first song I let my son hear of snarky puppy. He was 4 at the time and Shaun’s part in this song brought him so much happiness. so much so, it brought him to tears of joy. My son is 12 now, an incredible drummer and loves playing synthesizers. Snarky Puppy has been one of our favorite bands ever since we discovered this song years ago. The power of music is amazing. We were so saddened by the news of his passing but we want to Thank you Shaun for your gift and influence. Rest in Heaven sir. 🤍
I've seen this video a million times, but for some reason today, I started crying when I got to the end. I can't explain how or why music touches me the way it does, but I'm always incredibly moved by how musicians pour their souls into their craft. They give their all just to give us 6 minutes of auditory pleasure. It's incredible to me!
For me, it is realizing the audience "gets it" at the end that I always get misty eyed over... the possibility that they actually understand how groundbreaking and remarkable this music is.
I agree man! At around 5:34 is when I think the audience finally understands. That lady gleaming in the corner, the guys smiling to each other, most of everyone is bobbing to the beat....and at 5:46, those long notes....all of it coming together.....man. This band really is incredible.
@@ShawnTheDriver dude I just realized... that lady in the corner is actually Magda Giannikou, she did a song w/ them on Family Dinner Vol 1, Amor t'es La
Joao Carvalho Thank you, I'm glad to hear that! I feel you, I was lucky we had a guitar at home and my dad knew just enough to teach me the basics, allthough he always told me I shouldn't get my hopes up on getting good. I would do anything to encourage my daughter to make music if she wants to. Listening Snarky Puppy is a good start!
+Graafmachine dude that is so amazing. i read this and got a little misty eyed because sometimes i forget how much music impacts people and how much it does for humanity
@@slowpokeproductions hah! yeah I didnt notice that before. - But shoyarite - and I was wondering, not that its relavant, it looks like the kid from breaking bad is in the audience.
Just knew today (like 15 mins ago) that Shaun has passed away and this song was mentioned by many although I knew him most for "The Yellow Jacket". What a loss... 💔
A friend of mine who’s now late introduced me to the band via this song. I miss him every time I hear it but I’m never sad because this song brings me so much joy.
Kenya Airways plays this on board now as welcoming and before-landing BGM. We traveled from Hong Kong to Ghana this summer with a couple of stops. It was always nice to listen to this tune "Thing of Gold", especially when flying over the old 'Gold Coast' (now called Ghana). My 12 yr old daughter told me about the title and the band!! Snarky Puppy is reaching out to the young generations!! WOOHOO.
Sharing this in light of the recent sad news: This was the first song I’d ever heard by snarky puppy and my attention was undoubtedly grabbed due to Shaun Martins playing and solo. I remember it so vividly. It was a weekend before a marching band contest in 2012 and we were doing our stretches before our rehearsal on our high school football field. We always had music playing during this time on a radio or speaker of some sort and this day my band director just happened to be playing this song. I remember hearing the keys and turning around to my best friend to give him the look of “are you hearing this right now?” And of course he was already looking at me laughing because clearly we were thinking the same thing. As soon as stretches were over we both went up to our director to ask what song and group that was and that’s how we discovered one of our absolute favorite bands together. We saw them live in Dallas at least three times together after that. Unfortunately my friend is also no longer here but it gives me more peace knowing now he can jam with Shaun Martin up above. ❤️ R.I.P. Shaun Martin
The drop at 5:31 gives me goosebumps every damn time man. The key change, the way the winds come back in with Shaun's rapid solo, the whole vibe, it's just awesome!
One of the most important songs ive ever heard - havent listened in years, but came back to send Shaun off. Thank you for givinf us so much music. RIP Shaun.
One of the most simple yet complex compositions I've heard from snarky puppy and now hearing the passing of Shaun Martin it makes this performance ever more special may he rest in peace 🕊🖤
These guys talked about the writing of this song at a workshop they did near me a while back. They said that the original groove for the chorus was a standard 4/4 beat with the snare on 2 and 4, and actually played it that way for us... crazy how something as simple as a snare on the downbeat can completely take a song from 'pretty good' to 'sweet, decadent ear candy.'
Man, some people are so special their time with us is limited before they're called home. Like so many others, this song - this solo instantly connected with my musical soul and I was forever a Snarky Puppy & Shaun Martin fan. It's so great that anyone who watches this video gets to see a glimpse of his greatness. Rest in peace.
This is what music should be. So many different people with so many different lives and skill sets coming together and creating a masterpiece far greater than the sum of their parts. Godspeed, y'all.
if there is any fusion/jazz/modern ultra jazz that can bring tears to my eyes every single time I listen to, and make me see this life more colorful, more magical, that could only be Snarky Puppy.
RIP Shaun. You will be missed. Your lines here have always been an inspiration to me; it gives me this sense of hope that I actually never felt before listening to this track. The world has lost a beautiful soul.
Snarky Puppy plays such a big amount of different types of jazz Its incredible As a child from these days one normally doesnt hear to jazz music But Snarky Puppy beats all other bands with songs I really like This tune is so beautiful The part in the beginning when Shaun starts playing the moog with the violins makes me nearly cry always Sorry for my english Im from Germany and 17
Totally awesome, tears of joy streaming down my face at the amazing beauty of this piece, arms waving around playing imaginary everything, speakers so loud they're almost distorting!!! Thank god I'm alone or I'd look like a goose:-) For everyone's sake Snarky Puppy but especially mine, keep doing what you're doing.
That bassist is none other than, Michael League himself, the mastermind behind Snarky Puppy and this amazing musical feeling you are experiencing so he can do whatever the hell he wants! Don't be hatin! XD
This is one of my all-time favourite tracks. So inspiring. That is such a beautiful melody on the Moog - really lyrical. Love the way they take the tune through several key changes.

This is the most beautiful piece of art that I ever had the privilege to experience. Tears of joy are still running at the 100th play. Truly wonderful what music can make to our minds, without a doubt, music is the lingua franca of humanity, capable of fusing all of us into one true-self.
