This was the last piece of music I shared with my grandpa. Unable to leave his bed let alone spend time in his room with 31 guitars, he replied, “Amazing!!!” In the weeks leading to his passing, this became my all-time favorite music performance. Now, months later listening to it again for the first time, I’m reminded of the never-ending and inexplicably positive influence, not just musically, that he had on me. I have a whole life in front of me, and I know he’d want me to keep enjoying this piece - so that’s what I’ll do. Thank you all for this incredible, incredible piece of music.
Sorry for your loss and grateful for your connection through music. It’s been almost 6 years since my sister passed and music is still one of the strongest bonds I have with her. Music is truly a universal language and it transcends time and space ❤
man, even PROFFESSIONAL drummers are fanboying this GUY. Tranparency in technique, creativity as wild as a little kid, skilled like a grown man, and a God given talent. I wanna be like him. Mr. Larnell Lewis you're amazing!
My first exposure to the otherworldly drumming capability of this man was when I stumbled upon the Snarky Puppy "Lingus" video a few years ago. My mind was blown and not only did it make me a huge Larnell Lewis fan, but it was also my first exposure to Snarky Puppy. I thank whatever Gods were looking down on me that day because I've found so much more incredible music since then that I would have never known even existed. This video is one of them, too. Had the RUclips algorithm not known I was already into Snarky Puppy and had searched other Larnell videos, this would not have been recommended to me. My only regret about this whole thing is that these Zildjian/Ghost-Note drummer showcase videos were recorded in a studio not far from where I live. I would have never made the invite list, and probably wouldn't have found a way in, but I would have like to have tried, dammit!
Okay but come on... can we just talk about how beautifully and subtly Nate Werth (percussionist) compliments Larnell here (as well as every other drummer he works with)!! Sneakily filling the space at 6:07, getting that drop with Larnell at 6:34, adding to the Latin-esque groove at 7:00, and most importantly never getting in the way or playing when he doesn't need to be!! Awesome musicianship.
That's so true! I couldn't point out what made him stand out compared to other drummers I've seen. His use of silence to add tension + the dynamics you mention are killer. And if you're the real Jonas, then holy crap man! I've known you since the Shawn Lane days, you're a monster musician!
Larnell's ability to use exactly what's needed for the desired effect is so impressive. I'm not even a drummer but his drumming is so impressive that I love specifically listening to the way he adds to the music, especially We Like It Here by Snarky Puppy. Perfection.
I just want to highlight the amount of Ego Control Larnell displays performing in a room full of other amazing drummers playing that “simple” groove from the verse, faithfully staying in the pocket letting the song/melody shine for what it is without trying to impress anyone, but enjoying the moment. Slow clap for you Sr.
Because it's an absolutely perfect composition. Larnell is equally as good as Sput and Kaz at making a phenomenal track, but what he does in the solo is breathtaking.

Every 10-20 years, someone comes along and changes the landscape. Normally that 10-20 year person is seen in sports (Jordan, Tiger Woods, Serena, etc). Mr Lewis is one of those generational folks in the drumming world.
Love the look on Larnell's face at 1:35 when he hears Xavier Taplin play those eerie notes on the synth. That must have been an impromptu, on the spot idea that Larnell noticed in the moment! Love that!
I think it’s more of the stick sliding on the edge while he opens the hi-hat slightly to create a live reverse open hi-hat sound. He showed this technique in some clinic, it’s just amazing and creative!
What blows my mind is not just how creative and music Larnell is, but how fluent he is, both technically and in terms of phrasing/time/space/melody. my two most favorites parts of this play: 1. Larnell includes Nate the percussionist on that solo part. Beautifully done. 2. The ending where he smashed the cymbals with his hands. Epic!
Some cymbal brands have certain cymbals in their line-up designed more for "auxillary percussion" players than set players that are made specifically for playing with the hands and still get a clear tone and sound great. I mean... The one Larnell smashes is not that. But those kinds of cymbals exist. So he's not the first person to do that. :D
Every single time I watch this video... and I have literally seen it over a dozen times... I am AMAZED by this drummer! He does things by instinct that most drummers wouldn't imagine... FLAWLESSLY!!!
Jojo? But larnell is like 10 times better than him! that's the only reason i'd bother to mention his name after watching one of larnell's tastiest performances ever.
Dik Beats No!! you got to get your ears checked there,fella!!....Jojo Mayer is a world class player!! You don’t know WTF your talking about there, junior!!
Been waiting for this to drop...ZILDJIAN HAS DONE IT AGAIIIIN. Zildjian owns Vic Firth so the VF Lives were produced by Zildjian as well. Great content, Larnell slays as always. Cant wait for more!!! This is why I play Zildjian...great company.
Yeah there would really be no point in getting sput and the ghost note band to do it if it wasn’t previously done with Vic Firth since all the drummers/percussionists are all meinl artists yet Vic Firth artists as well. But who knows I don’t know they might’ve still done it if the price was right. Love the production of the Vic Firth live jams and now this series. Imo my favorite productions by cymbal companies are the meinl drum videos and meinl drum festivals and now these vic Firth/zildjian live videos.
Larnell is honestly insane. The most creative drummer I've ever seen BY FAR! That thing he does @ 6:06 The way he tightens the the Tom drum to make it play a higher pitch @ 6:13 The way he plays the plays THE ACTUAL WINGNUTS on the cymbals right after @ 6:14 He's just- I- How???

From a drummer to another - He's grooving so hard, it's amazing. Not over the top, he listen to the music and emphasise parts that needs it. It's so delicate.
I agree whole heartily- and I’m not a drummer!!!! I love the look of sheer joy on his face. Such musical conviction and intention throughout his playing. I know why I keep coming back to watch this- it makes me glad to be alive.♥️♥️♥️👍🏻🔥
Larnell seems to combine so many of the amazing qualities of other drummers into a cohesive style that is all his own. The fierce groove of the best old-school funk drummers, the dead-to-rights in to pocket playing of Gadd, the effortless intensity of Colaiuta, the playfulness of Carter Beauford. You could go on and on. Definitely one of the greatest players alive right now, IMO.
Can we PLEASE give respect to the percussionist. He looked like he was doing a workout from how fast he was moving. After that performance I have new found respect for percussionists. And don't get me started on the bassist.
On a 1 - 10 scale of the stank face meter... this is like, a 12. Holy crap. Seriously. Been listening to this on repeat for the past like, 3 months. The pocket is deeper than JNCO jeans pockets. Even people who don't know what a stank face is end up having one somewhere during this beautiful masterpiece.
I simply love how these musicians translate the emotions and happines they themselves feel when playing their instruments, they can't stop bobbing their heads, smile but you can see and feel the concentration through the complexity of the track. Pure music from the soul.

Fell in love with Larnell when he played with Snarky Puppy
It's the afrobeat rhythm at 6:59. As a Nigerian I highly appreciate it
so sick how nate werth picked up on it w the cowbell too
I didn't know what it was but when he did that my mind was blown
I saw that too... It was mad. I had to replay it a couple times to listen to that part... Wow!!! His versatility is something else!!!
Isn't that samba?

Every single time I watch this video... and I have literally seen it over a dozen times... I am AMAZED by this drummer! He does things by instinct that most drummers wouldn't imagine... FLAWLESSLY!!!
I wanna cry..like wow...anybody else have tears 😂
When it's funky your eyes water bro😭
Yep
wow am speechless , especially that kick technique similar like jojo mayer technique
Jojo Mayer didn't create that technique. Steve Gadd was doing that technique in the 70's. I am not saying he created it, but Jojo devinitely didn't.
Chris Spencer how would you explain the technique?
Chris Spencer he didnt say Jojo Mayer created it. He said it was similar.
Jojo? But larnell is like 10 times better than him! that's the only reason i'd bother to mention his name after watching one of larnell's tastiest performances ever.
Dik Beats No!! you got to get your ears checked there,fella!!....Jojo
Mayer is a world class player!!
You don’t know WTF your talking about there, junior!!
You know your a great musician and person when you get that kind of love from a lot of other great musicians. Respect to Larnell Lewis!
Larnell … you are a true icon, through and through!!!
I completely forgot about that.
@@los4drum saammee
Damn Zildjian owns Vic Firth?? I thought they copied on the VF Jams lol
@@andyham6094 not ALL are Meinl artists. You had a solid amount of Zildjian artists. I would say half Meinl and half Zildjian.
Larnell is honestly insane. The most creative drummer I've ever seen BY FAR!
That thing he does @ 6:06
The way he tightens the the Tom drum to make it play a higher pitch @ 6:13
The way he plays the plays THE ACTUAL WINGNUTS on the cymbals right after @ 6:14
He's just-
I-
How???
I hate to break it to you man but all he did was put his elbow on the drum, no tuning necessary
while i agree in that this man is seriously insane, the elbow on the tom is just an old trick.. jazz greats have used that one for years (especially with timpani mallets)
@@mmro546 so ?
@@tumbler4life11 no no no... the hihat thing, man @ 6:06 ... never seen that, it sounds like reversing the tape or smtg. and how smoothly it was incorporated there, absolutely epic.
@@mmro546 oh I didn't know that lol... this is the first time I've seen it. Thanks for the heads up
Everything he did was still ridiculous... that included :D
Larnell is a BEAST! This was a joy to watch. Awesome hearing one of Larnell's originals being given some love by Searight. So good!
Me revisiting this 4 years later and Still being Impressed with this Set as well as that Solo portion by Larnell!! Don't know how many times I Rewatched that Solo Part!! lol Legendary Stuff right there!! #SaluteKing
When music is played for the love of music, with this level of skill, technique, and professionalism, there is joy.
At 0:30 is officially the best fill I have ever heard.
Larnell Lewis and Thomas Pridgens have the best Zildjian Live performances of them all
6:16 how he hits the top of the cymbal stands with that accuracy and dynamics always get me. And apparently, the crowd was blown away as me too.
The sheer level of musicality in this is mind boggling. Wow
When Larnell plays you know everyone is going to catch a smile
MonoNeon should be more recognized. Dude is literally the backbone of every performance!
Found out about him recently he is unbelievable then the dude gets on the keys and guitar too. He is a legend
*Mono* is definitely one of those fine players that *Davie504* just can't mess with.
@SonneMond102 davie is mainly a youtuber, not a full time musician, dont compare them both man
@@nipulkradmsinatagras8293 I mean who could?
who is mononeon? is it someone in the video? they should put a nametag on themselves or something XD
6:06 crazy hihat sound effect...👋👋from Argentina!!
Man these my PEOPLE... period. What a killer environment.
Can we PLEASE give respect to the percussionist. He looked like he was doing a workout from how fast he was moving. After that performance I have new found respect for percussionists. And don't get me started on the bassist.
And he has smiling the whole time too ❤ what a fuckin Chad.
That was just filthy ...He killed them drums!! Whole band is sick!
This bass player is NASTY.
Omg what a player. Some seriously deadly lines grooving through this tune.
Amazing
On a 1 - 10 scale of the stank face meter... this is like, a 12. Holy crap.
Seriously. Been listening to this on repeat for the past like, 3 months. The pocket is deeper than JNCO jeans pockets. Even people who don't know what a stank face is end up having one somewhere during this beautiful masterpiece.
4:25 where it opens up gives me chills
I simply love how these musicians translate the emotions and happines they themselves feel when playing their instruments, they can't stop bobbing their heads, smile but you can see and feel the concentration through the complexity of the track. Pure music from the soul.
this is soooooo matured. i could hear every intention not rough at all. soo clean drum displayed.
He just makes it look so effortless. Never misses the beat.
Honestly, I can't get over this video. Can't count how many times I've seen this.
