- theukulelesite.... Corey Fujimoto shows us how to play the Jake Shimabukuro version of the George Harrison classic as composed by Hawaii's own Jake Shimabukuro, a prolific artist that influenced a new generation of ukulele masters. This is part 1 of three in this lesson.
I believe Corey had just tuned to Jake in his video at Central Park which is what Corey was listening to before teaching this. So it's a bit flat of 440. Also I just asked Corey to teach it. He's not a "teacher" but you'll get it if you want. This was early in our video days and I apologize if it is not as thorough as you need. If it wasn't free and useful for some I would just remove it, but it is what it is.
Thanks to those that are cool and willing to work. In Hawaiian old tradition the teachers told the students to watch and listen. Make it your own.
Aloha!
You play so fast is because that you’re afraid that I learn from it?
HAHAHHAHAH .
LMAO
I SCREAMEEED LMAO
i wish he would remake this tutorial with some better explaining on the picking hand.
maybe some tabs?
great player; bad teacher. He says one thing, does something else. Changes chord shapes. Add is bits without explaining. Still, I'm getting there. He changes the G-chord shape to something: what is it??
A little late, sorry. What he does is basically bar the instead of placing the index and middle finger on the respective strings. I was having trouble too.
Inversions... same chord just a different shape
If you want to teach to the end of the process of teaching, add the tabs, It could be really helpful for us the students, 'cause we follow you and also have the tab confirmation. I just want to take also some time in this comment to tell you that you are so talented and an inspiration to us, the herd that uses this as a hobby or a therapy, we thank you so much! you inspire... lovely
is it me or is he teaching it one way and playing it another?
He states at the beginning that he's just going to teach us a simple version.
You play beautiful, I love your videos and I've learn a lot with your tabs, specially Canon in D. You really play like the angels...
But you explain like shit... Sorry, I don't mean to be offensive.
so true......
Artemio Soto : are we watching the same video? Elements of this song were impossible until seeing this man’s demonstration. I don’t even play stringed instruments.
L o o k what he wrote ->
Thanks to those that are cool and willing to work. In Hawaiian old tradition the teachers told the students to watch and listen. Make it your own.
Aloha!
please make a tutorial of the intro:)
Por favor ensina a introdução. Muito Obrigado
What about all that right-hand stuff? You're going to leave me to figure that all out by myself?
James K Yeah, after follow this and practice this for a while, I feel the right hand is the hardest part!
That hammer on and hammer off with the pinky makes me shit bricks
@itsmimitime This video is a "watch and learn" kind of video. If you're looking "tabs" or any simpler way of learning this song, there are a bunch more videos on youtube with easier explanations geared toward "novice" players.
Aloha.
the way you played it kept changing, at one point there was less picking then when you played it again there was a lot of extra picking, but better than nothing.
Tune your uke dude
Squidmaster802 it was downtuned to fit one of Jakes performances
Can you PLEASE do a tutorial for the intro that you did at the beginning! I can play the whole song but really want to be able to do the intro. By the way, your videos rock.
@inf3rnox sure, it would just be a 4th lower so it would sound a little different, but the shapes are the same.
Its a great video, i just wish he'd gone over the picking too.
Yay, almost got this part down!
After an hour and a half
Seriously guys, this isn't that hard to follow. Just listen closely and you'll be able to figure it out. Thanks for the video!!
@PoliteCheese1414 It may be a little flat (still tuned to itself), but it is still the same shapes. If you are gonna play along try tune down a bit and tune it to itself. Sorry for any confusion. You should still be able to learn it from this.
That's awesome.. but now my fingers hurt.
My father showed me Jake Simabukuro playing this song, and I thought that I could never do this.... Now I feel like I am getting closer to what I thought was impossible.
Thank you! :)
I'm borrowing my RA's ukulele. I might buy one off of you guys, but am not sure what to get, or what strings to purchase... :(
@xiAresx We'll show the full version of the song soon. Corey will try to play it in the style of Jake Shimabukuro. Stay tuned.
@iyongbakla Its just the way I like to play. I like to change it up a bit. Thanks for watching.
I know you're trying but you miss out SO much of what you're doing to the point where I have to continually "rewind" and play in slow motion to see what strings you're plucking
@purposemaker909 The link is above to part 2 and their is a part 3 as well. thanks
@Yomhas35 The strings were just changed that day so it slipped a little.
@TheOrangePoet It depends on how well you want to play it. It's hard to play it perfect.
skips way too much
Chris Montoya I agree, when it got to 5:22 I got so confused he didn't really explain what to do, but I actually learned some of it already.
Anyone else confused from 5:06?? The hammer on and off?
Leaguenoob i definitely got lost there. There's not enough explanation of each note on that part and the end. I'm really frustrated because I can do the first part, but that last part is confusing as hell.
I'm not confused, but it's a really advanced skill
Yean start there beging confused
STOP! Before you learn this piece, please learn to improvise or find out some notes by ear, I learned this and added a few patterns, with some ghost notes.
That is a beautiful Ukulele. The Ko'olau CS Tenor? Would love to get my hands on one some day. It took me some time, but I converted most of this video to paper tabs. Worth doing for those learning, it helps with memorisation etc. Much appreciate your videos!
been playing for years and this video is probably the best ive seen yet for learning how to play this song thanks for the tutorial.
Hi i know this is four years old but did you ever end up learning this?
Your a great player, you just can't do tutorials very well cuz.
@Jin24601 tenor
I love the fast pace teaching style brotha 🤙🏾 this one is not for beginners, lots of different techniques you need to learn before going after this one
Hi! I've been practicing but I was wondering if there was a way to see the chords written on a sheet. Do you have a link to the chords/tabs?
Google it.
Finally.. a tutorial worth learning..Nicely Done.
Would it be possible for you to do a quick tutorial for the intro?
Thanks.
@Dahhhnyel Both are out on our channel now!!
I'm a self taught ukulele player, and this is a very hard song to learn-- obviously it will take practice, but I'll get there!! Even if this song seems super difficult, try it! Keep practicing, because it made my skill level go up... A LOT
I got through the first little part! I had to keep rewinding, but I can do it--
SAME!!!
Jen Chal It's only difficult because the way he explains it. I'm still trying to figure it out.
So, 4years later, have you went there? lol
@jlaci We will work on that. Thank you!
there are some extra notes that you added in which you didn't teach ):
Thank you so much! I was able to learn this song with this tutorial!
@SourLemonBanana You can do it!
@Yomhas35 high g
Not a great tutorial.
Perhaps he knows soo much that he can’t forward his knowledge, seriously.
DAFUQ? what i am playing does not sound like that lol...... you've got skills brah ! gimme some of dat skill i seriously need it ._.
yes sir maganda kasi ukelele na long neck wala kasi sa mga music stores sa atin
tulad ng JB kaya mahirap talaga maghanap. pati music forum nag post nako. iba ata kasi yung guitarlele kasi 6 strings na yun e.
@magermax000 he tunes it differently for this song. unfortunately, he didn't tell us how he tuned it... |:-|

Thank you for the nice music. Any tubs or tutorials?
Thanks for this first part, great job !
Difference between a Subject Matter Expert and a Teacher. This guy plays SOO well, it's beautiful (even out of tune) but, if you are looking to learn this a SME is never your best bet-they aren't teachers. I would go see Ukulele Cheats, or someone like that to get the basic chords, and then learn to pick with those basic chords, and eventually you will be able to improvise or copy Jake, the way this player is doing. If you are new to uke then attempting this would be the equivalent of trying to eat a six foot sub in one bite.
It’s a complicated song, but you do a good job of explaining as if you were sitting with me giving me lessons. Others say your too fast. It’s the song that’s too fast not you. It’s hard at any speed. I’m an old, moderate to advanced player with arthritis. So I had to drop down from tenor to my concert to reach the stretches needed. But one suggestion. Your Ukulele is tuned flat. At least the recording sounds flat. I spent fifteen minutes trying to match your tuning. Is that because you tune it flat or do you just tune by ear? It was hard for me to play along without detuning. I doubt I will ever get this like you but I”lol try. You young guys just have a flair for playing so smoothly.
Pulled my Pono-AT out of it's case for this one. I'm assuming parts 2&3 never happened, but it would sure be welcome!
Has anyone got the tabl this particular version/tutorial? I'm having trouble determining fret finger placement because I think it is done two different ways in this video. Thank you.
@OTL726 This tutorial is more for the chords and stuff. Its a "watered down" version.
Good lesson it takes time to get this and you did a good job Mahalo Bra from a guy who lived in Hawaii for 4 years. Jake is Awesome
im pretty sure it is cuz its not tuned with mine and i tuned mine right on GCEA
You should check out their website, they have a great selection and they have guides to help you pick one. You can get a $50 Kohala mass produced uke if you want to just get started. It was my first. I've since bought from Hawaii Music Supply 3 times. But, if you arent sure if you want to commit to it, go to your local music store and grab something under $100, and check out Aaron's guides on their website to get started.
maybe its me, but i get a lil confused. im not trying to sound like an ass. but u keep on showing different ways to play it, like u say 'you can either pick or strum, however u want to do it" i say show it to us one way n when we feel a lil more confident playing it, then we will fool around and try different variations. i feel like your mind is everywhere! but good job teachn it. i learned a lil, i guess i jus gotta keep on practicing.
I went back to the beginning to watch how the song goes but I accidentally listened to the whole song =.=
Im happy you've put this tutorial on. Easy for beginners, but maybe you could stick to one way to play it for the tutorial. Im constantly playing parts over and over. And the last play at 6:55 is not the same as you've teached before in the video. However thanks for the tutorial, i have it down until 4:50, after that it gets complicated to see what is going on.
if you have played the uke for like almost a year or so then u would probably just look at what he's doing and figure out yourself because that's what I did and I completed this part. But still I think he's bad at teaching.
dude does anyone knows where to buy a long fret ukelele I only have the small one its like a toy
I still learned how to play it but it's basically like I taught myself. Guess that only makes me a better player though haha either way hope you don't take offense because I mean it as constructive criticism to make future tutorials better.
@MeetTheseIronFists What exactly are you doing on 0:55? (the G-chord moved up 3 frets?)
... I know that there is something to do with picking, strumming, and a pinky hammer... but I just cant understand.
:p
in the video corey states that jake mainly improvises the intro..... so, theres no need to make a tutorial for one...... make it to fit how you think it sounds like and add your own "feel" to it
supercool
thanks for doing that
the only tab for this isnt very good
funny accent u have
u only say shtring but rest is normal (for my french ear^^)
it s not as heavy as french polynesian
what are the strings tuned to?
to all you people that cant learn this by watching the video. its called listening carefully and try to play it when he is playing it. i learned by watching and listening carefully
thanx for making this tutorial, but i wish you'd shown the picking of the strings more clearly. Also when you do it i swear you add in extra awsome little bits !?! thankyou anyway x
Great tutorial, but is it just me or does it sound like his uke needs to be tuned? It sounds like its tuned to itself, but not the proper notes. If that makes sense.
kinda missed a step. took me a while to point out what just happend. around 2:25 you didnt explain the hammer on with middle finger. but well done tutorial ty for the help
I don't think this is the first song I should try to learn for my first time picking up a uke, but fuck it, I'm gunna get this down.
how much time did it cost you to learn it?
I'm trying to play it but I'm a little to slow :P
how did you work with learing the song?
by the way I like ur movie!
TUTORIAL FOR INTRO TO GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS. NOTE: I only found this link I am not the creator nor the person who is in the video. /watch?v=TL2GDdzkdho
You are very good, but it would help if you would say what you do with your right hand! :) But nice vid, I came with nothing and now I can play it! :D
could you maybe send me those paper tabs -if its not too much trouble?
as Im kinda lazy, I try asking people who wrote them down already =)
cheerio
He's so good (and even better now). It's like watching something in slo-mo, thinking "I want to go faster!" but my fingers and brain can't do it. I wish I was skilled enough.
it took me four hours of intense practice but..after literally raping the video scrubber to review secctions..I can finally play one note of it.
i mean....we wouldnt be on this video, trying to learn the song if we didnt think we could handle it....so why dont u show us the beginning?
I think You are playing some parts differently while doing whole song and while explaining... That confuses some people. Thanks for the video anyway
@SourLemonBanana bar the chord instead of using your index and middle to hold the note. it should be easer to hammer with the pinky now
Here are some tabs for people who like to have something to work with.
ukutabs.com/files/Jake_Shimabukuro_-_While_My_Guitar_Gently_Weeps.pdf?x33002
This vid won't play on iPad - says it's disallowed by author - please fix
Just a little hint: At the end with the hammer on/pull off chord i find it easier if you hold it propperly with all your fingers, not the barre chord he's using in the video. And do the hammer on with pinky. Than you just slide the "g" shaped chord two frets and than another fret. I think it's easier, might help you, i don't know.
Mahalo for setting out to teach one of Jakes most difficult songs. I see comments below criticizing you however the student should realize that this is not an easy song and you can't spoonfeed every finger string combination or it will take eons to teach this song. Moreover, it is not for beginning level players although they will benefit by trying to figure out finger/string combination on their own. He in fact does sprinkle in what fingers to use here and there. Give Corey credit for taking on this daunting project. As for Corey, mahalo for the tutorial, you go Hawaiian!!!
this isnt a song for begginers in my opinion. it could be easier but i like it. leaves room for figuring it out myself!
@Jeghetervictoria
Care to explain? I thought he did an amazing job. If you can do better, please show us your tutorial.
I learned most of it, just gotta practice it now. I had one issue tho and it was that your teaching was a bit fast and I didn't really understand what strings you were hitting
I'm from the Philippines. :) but that toy ukelele I bought in Hawaii
On the video it looks like Jake plays something between the high voicing and the Bb- also, where is the next video??
anyone notice that with each example he sometimes only picks the a string and sometimes he picks the g string too?
No offence...But Im pretty sure the guy from ukuleleunderground can explain this much clearer... But good job bro
fantastic lesson! I am working on it. I jumped ahead to lesson 2 , just to look and the Pono doesn't sound near as good {to my ears} as this uke. What brand is this one? thank you Steve
dude! youre fucking good!
bro what the fuck is 4:47 doesnt make fuckin sense pls explain better
@Matt3683683 its the regular GCEA tuning but he shows a simpler way while he does the advanced way
@MrFlyingPanda haha i'm glad you liked it. Sorry if i wasn't clear on some parts. Didn't get much sleep that day but I'll try my best on the next video. Stay tuned!
Relax.... If you can't figure it out by this video, odds are you wouldn't understand it anyway
great job, just a little confusing and hard to follow...maybe go a little slower next time?
