unfortunately, i am uneducated and consequently the question i have to ask may seem confusing! im interested in block and tackle and its components specifically the system of "slowing" down a rope. their is a device known as "Rope Ratchet" which "locks" but when you release the rope it must be "controlled" or slowed down. their is a "spindle?" or "pipe?" or "steel rod?" that rope is wrapped around several times and consonantly it slows it down. the more times you wrap it around the "pipe?" the slower it pulls off of it? this is used with block and tackle systems but what is the name of the component that the rope goes around.

What's the point of connecting 2 ropes, if the join is not intended to take any load or tension? Sounds entirely useless?
