      Max Frankow The clunky way they have Clark struggling with giving himself up while a picture of Jesus in the garden the night before the crucifixion is over his shoulder is a little much. I know Goyer thought he was a genius by making Clark 33 (same age as Jesus) and making anything but subtle allusions like this one, but it’s too obvious and in your face to be considered anything but clunky, weak and sloppy.

      George Tanner I was speaking to the terrible writing that Goyer churned out for this film. Subtle allusion is one thing but beating us over the head that Superman is an allegory for Jesus is something we’d expect out of a 9th grade essay. It was my rebuttal to the post about this scene being beautiful. It was ham-fisted, clunky and sloppy, 3 things that are decidedly NOT beautiful.

    • @jeffn4836
      @jeffn4836 6 лет назад +1

      George Tanner Really?
      Clark is 33 years old in Man of Steel. That’s the same age Jesus was when he was crucified. Goyer said he did this purposely.
      The scene in which Clark is contemplating giving himself up for the sake of humanity? It happens to be framed in a shot in which Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane is depicted in the stained glass window behind Clark. That’s the garden in which Jesus was contemplating giving himself up for the sake of humanity the night before the crucifixion.
      Then there are the little things like Superman striking a Christ pose when exiting the ship before battling Zod and company in Smallville or the same pose in the water where he is floating after the platform explodes towards the beginning of the film. This movie is littered with this stuff and it isn’t done subtly. You can almost hear Goyer screaming “Look at how clever I am!”

It added depth and realism to a situation that is strange and scary especially to a young, growing, confused man. Even the scene Diane Lane had when she had to pacify him in school for getting too scared of his abilities. It brought the familiarity of wise parenting through love and communication in addressing something that is beyond comprehension.

      At first, I didn’t understand what this meant, because it was wrapped in metaphorical rhetoric, that it wasn’t clear. But now I understand. Clark had no idea what was happening to him, he could see people’s skeletons and muscle fibers, and hear everything for miles around him, and even heat up a door knob from three feet away. Imagine the amount of stress and pain that can put on the mind and body of a child. He closed himself off from the world, because he was scared of what was happening. But Martha, she came in, giving Clark a way to focus his senses by giving his ears and eyes something focus on, and in this case, it was the soothing voice of his mother. She helped him to drop his guard and not be afraid, but to open himself up, and allow the multiple stimuli to become a part of him, to allow his senses to adapt, to focus on just what he wanted to see and hear. So brilliant.

    I watched this movie when my son was then 4 or so months old. I remember really loving the flashbacks, the exploration of his past, both his true and adoptive parents nurturing his being - both the scenes with Russell Crowe's watchful father and mentor as well as Constner's, both sacrificing themselves in their own way protecting their greatest pride. Even now I feel silly that I choke up whenever I watch or think about these scenes from the movie. And of course Diane Lane plays such a great part in showing her patience and grit having to see her son as Superman or not, deal with everything in the present. Also Amy Adams - I really like her more slower paced roles and performance in the recent movies I've watched (Arrival as well) and this one is just as great. Instead of the 80s Louis mouthing off 100 mph she's got this quiet, inquisitive almost calculating personality as she traces back this mysterious person. And then rather than sell him out or act all fan girly it seemed to me she cared about and even admired Clark for his works, with a healthy amount of respect I take it.
    Dunno, I'm just rambling now. The movie -- especially the slower paced first half and the soundtrack were really what hooked me in. All these little back story scenes and those exchanges between Clark and another person 1 on 1 were great.

    Never tripped off of Pete's face after he helps Clark up and saw the bent pole. He gave the "Man look...they don't really want smoke" look. It's quick but it happens lol

      Perhaps but what then. You acted on instinct but not self control. You allowed someone else to benefit from your insecurities. That’s why the joker exists because he has no self control and acts purely on his own instincts. Superman and Batman are the opposite for that. Sure they beat people up but only where necessary to achieve a peaceful outcome and to protect others but also having concern for those they attack.

      Why is it funny? I think it's even a bit deep. A man of god who sticks to his faith even though he's talking to an alien.

      Alexander Mercer yeah it’s one of my favorites. Btw I would absolutely love it if you watched a film I made on my channel. It’s a fantasy film about defeating fear and doubt. Called The Kings World:Battle of the Soul.

      Because a lot of the nay-sayers just wanted a rehash of the Christopher Reeves Superman films despite the fact that Zack Synder said time and time again they were going their own way and despite the fact that the tone, scale, and a more stoic Superman is more in line with recent comics and despite the fact that the nay-sayers got the Reeves rehash with Superman Returns and they pretty much didn't like that one either.

    Shoutout to the most chill priest out there. It's not every day that a super cute alien walks into your church for some insight.
    Also, unrelated: do flat earthers enjoy Superman or do they view the whole thing as heresy?

    How many bullies did clark faced. Good thing for every incident jonathan was there heal and give comfort that clark will carry throughout his life because a child will keep it to himself. Remember injuries of the mind is much harder to heal than injuries on the flesh.

  • @EricGraham94
    @EricGraham94 3 года назад +8

    A common criticism of the church scene is the forced symbolism with Jesus in the shot; people tend to forget that symbolism - especially when presented visually - is just icing on the cake. What makes Clark human in this scene is that he's willing to ask another human - a priest, no less - for guidance on what he should do. But at its core, the "symbolism" or philosophy that haters hate on is part of the human experience. Art, philosophy, psychology, history and mythology are all cornerstones of the human experience.
