  • In this episode I am riding from Cuenca to Machala, on the coast of Ecuador. I chose a route straight through the mountains, so I don't have to ride the asphalt main roads. After climbing up to 4000 meters, I am descending straight into lush green jungle. That's Ecuador for you!!

    I'm so happy you were in Cuenca (my city). Had I known you were here I would have been your tour guide. The scenes through the Cajas National Park and the lakes are astonishing. The tree plantation your ask for are Teca. An exotic tree, brought from somewhere in Asia, that's been heavily planted the last 20 years for its wood. It's good since reduces the demand of native tropical woods, but on the other hand its excessive plantations reduces dramatically the biodiversity and erodes the soil. The swamps you saw in Machala are actually mangrove forests, home of rich biodiversity: clams, crabs and birds.

    • @freiheit1
      @freiheit1 2 года назад +62

      It indeed is Teca or as we know it, Teak. I'm from India and my family has a plantation here where we have teak and i recognised the broad leaves that are constantly removed from the bottom so that the tree grows straight without branches. Only it's a native plant here but for you it would be exotic/invasive species.

      @@KJ6EAD I think it was at the National Park entrance. It's managed by the local municipality and the public water service. Cuenca gets its water from those lakes and rivers and need to be properly managed and protected.

      @@aguarongo WalkTheDogs who commented below is correct. That is Paulownia Shantung aka empress, imported from China and not Tecas or teakwood. How can you tell the difference? At that age Tecas have light brown trunk and oval shaped leaves while Paulownias have green trunk and maple like leaves.

    The trees with the giant leaves at 18:08 look like Paulownia trees. They bloom a light lavender in the Spring. Extremely fast-growing and can make a lumber crop in a very short timeframe. Those were probably small 6" seedlings a few months earlier. I have them on my ranch. I feed the leaves to my alpacas.

    Another great video and in a part of Ecuador I never saw. I believe those trees are Paulownia, also called Empress. It's a very fast-growing, lumber-producing tree used mostly for furniture and lower end musical instruments. It's similar to bamboo in its uses and growth rate (up to 20 feet/year in an agreeable climate and soil). Also, one of the wild species is highly invasive like bamboo but the cultivated ones are actually pretty difficult to grow from seeds. These look cultivated and are probably non-invasive.

Many British visitors have said so, and I could witness the same thing when I saw "Brave Heart" and the "Outlander" Netflix series.
      Though the Andes is quite a young range mountain (60 million years old), the Ecuadorian Southern mountains are older than the Northern ones. That means volcanic formation stop millions of years ago, meanwhile in the north the formation still is going on. Natural erosion plus thick glaciers once covered the area are responsible for thousands of lakes and an astonishing landscape today.

    I have lived in Ecuador on the coast for 0ver 7 years. Some of the most beauiful scenery is along the coast, hills, trees, rain forrests and rock formations. You should ride the coastal roads sometime.

    17:46 Those are balsa trees. Ecuador is the world’s largest exporter of this wood to the world. The demand for balsawood has increased dramatically as the number of wind farms in China has increased. Sadly, balsawood plantations are insufficient to meet this demand, and the majority of balsa wood is illegal and comes from indigenous peoples' territories in the Amazonia, also affecting the Peruvian Amazon region 😞. Enjoy Ecuador, a wonderful country! Hope to see you in Perú soon. Ride safe! 🙌
