Another consideration is how much old EF glass you own and want to use with your new RF camera. If you have a lot of lenses that you like then the $100 upcharge is spread across several lenses that you now get a bonus control upgrade on without buying the similar RF lens.
Yes, and I’d add to that: EF glass is now dirt cheap. Well that’s an exaggeration of course but many people are selling it in favor of RF glass. For someone getting into serious photography there’s amazing deals. Like a second hand EF 85mm 1.2 L II that doesn’t cost much more than a new RF 85mm 2.0. Or saving a thousand bucks on a 24-70 2.8 or something. I’d say this is actually a great time to be getting INTO ef glass 😅
Adapter without the control ring. On the EOS R6 there are three dials. I use auto ISO. Shutter dial - Shutter Speed Back dial - Aperture Top dial - Exposure Compensation ISO is easily adjusted through the touch screen or M-Fn button and changed with the shutter dial.
I like the one that takes filters so that even lenses that don’t fit a filter can take them. I bought the off-brand Meike and it works great. Rather have two filters for every lens then a control ring
I'm getting the R8 upgrading from a 5d mkiii, after watching your vid I think I'll be getting that. I'm pretty sure there are less dials on the R8 compared to it's single bodied siblings.
Since I only have EF glass which I intend to keep, it was a no brainer for me to get the control ring adapter and use it with every single one of them. That’s not even the case for the cheaper RF lenses which don’t have it. I’m using it to switch between the AF zones, because that’s a setting I’m changing a lot, and it makes it very convenient. It’s also giving me that tactile feeling the old camerass used to have, but that’s just a personal preference.
Thanks so much for doing this video & explaining so clearly & concisely. I’m desperately contemplating getting the R7. I’m a newbie and have been shooting with the T6 & couldn’t figure out if I should get the control ring adapter or not. Thx for your guidance because I’d absolutely regret not getting the control ring. As you explained it would make the camera function similar to the old school non-digital camera which I originally learned on, and is exactly the functionality I’ve been missing on my T6.
Thanks for this video! I love being able to change the settings on my film camera on the lens like that, I think I might have to go with it. Making the switch from my 50D to a R6 Mark II and want to be sure my investment is worthwhile.
Thanks for your time , it works for smaller lenses , but I tried it on a 70-200 2.8 and found it too far back and out of balance , but this is only my view .
If shooting portraits or other still objects it may not be needed, but if you are doing sports or are in varying light conditions, being able to quickly make a change could mean getting the shot or not.
Just bought the one with control ring. I'm going to use it on a EOS R8. There's not dedicated iso button on EOS R8 compared to my 77d. I can use it to adjust ISO or any function. Also it's 149usd right now.
Thanks Bruce! Just the information I was looking for. I wanted to know if you could assign exposure compensation and you answered that. The rep at the camera store didn't know and Canon web site is not much help.
Great, glad it was helpful! I'm a big aperture priority guy and I like the quick turn of the ring to adjust up or down after a quick look at the histogram on the LCD panel.
I shoot manual on the R7. Control ring sits on the lens..in theory ideal for changing aperture. Then iso can go on one of the other dials. However, I often shoot long lenses where that ring is out of reach for my hand supporting the lens. I dont know. Ill stick to the normal adapter.Btw, how awesome is it to use a speedbooster adapter on the R7 or other CF body? It makes my 500 F4 be either a 800 F4 or a 550 F2.8!
Appreciate the video and I must say, paying the extra hundred for the control ring was worth it. Especially for the Tokina 11-16mm ATX lens EF mount, it was one of my favourite ultrawide lenses and you couldn't find a lens like this in the RF mount version.
I need to purchase one to; I'm going from Cannon eos T5 to Cannon R50; but is the one with manual focus better or should I get the one with auto focus?
Hi Yolanda, I'm not sure what you're asking me. The focus ring does not control manual or auto-focus, but it does keep the communication between the camera and lens for focusing.
You say "3" versions but maybe I'm misunderstanding. It seems there are only 2 (with or without control). Would you ever consider one of the alternatives like the one on Amazon that offers ND filter plugins??? Thanks

Good Point! Thanks

Thank you. After viewing this, I quickly called B&H Photo and changed my order to an adapter WITH the control ring. Only $70 more.
Glad it helped!

Shutter dial - Shutter Speed
Back dial - Aperture

Thanks for sharing your photography knowledge much appreciated

Agreed!
Thanks Bruce for the information and showing how to set up the controller adaptor. I have purchased with an R3.
Great!

Thanks for your response
Bruce thank you for this video. I purchased the adjustable ring adapter for my R7. Your video helps me understand how to use the adapter.
Glad it helped

With the ring is the way to for me. Insightful video, thanks!
Great! Thanks

Glad it will work that function for you!
I plan to do exactly this and it's the reason I found this video as I was researching what to do. Thank you both!
Thanks Bruce! Just the information I was looking for. I wanted to know if you could assign exposure compensation and you answered that. The rep at the camera store didn't know and Canon web site is not much help.

The control ring adapter is also the only one from Canon that has weather sealing.
Many photographers are probably not aware of this. Thanks
I'm getting the Canon brand one with the Polorizer adaptor. :) Not having to switch that is super handy.
Good luck with it! :-)

It's great that you can set up the way you like!
beware that R100 doesn’t support custom dial or control ring, R50 does.
Yup, not a big fan of the R100.
I guess for photographers but I never touch any part of the lens when shooting video.
That's smart!

Thanks a lot! I'm leaning towards "it's a waste of money" :)
Glad it helped
I am the kind of person who is willing to spend the extra money; but only if I know what I am getting for the extra expenditure.
That makes sense.
Hi, i have heard that the ring does NOT work while in M mode. Is that insanity true?
Looks like a no answer situation.
That's not true. I just tested that on my R5, and it works fine in M mode.
Don't know
Good to know!
Thank you, based on your video, I will spend the extra. Cheers
Glad it helped!
Hello,
I bought a Camera R100 and a Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. But the R100 does not have the ring configuration. 😢😢😢
Thanks for your comment.
thx for let me know what the ring can do
Glad it helped.

The third version is the Canon adapter with ND or CPL.
@@roofusJohnson Correct! Thanks, Christian
1-simple adapter. 2-adapter with control ring 3-adapter with slide in filter for polarizer or neutral density filter.
Do they make an adapter from a canon t7 to fit rf lens?

You're welcome!
Thankyou. |You've sold it to me,
Glad it helped. Good luck with it
